UCLA football drops in USA TODAY Sports college football rankings

The Bruins fall in the rankings after their Big Ten loss to Washington.

After a month of winning, the UCLA Bruins tasted defeat after their loss to the Washington Huskies. Falling 31-19 on the road, the Bruins dropped to 4-6 on the season, 3-5 in the Big Ten, and 13th in the Big Ten standings.

UCLA built momentum after their wins over Rutgers, Nebraska, and Iowa but got a dose of reality against Washington. Proving they are still far away from Big Ten contention, the Bruins head to the drawing board with rival USC on deck this weekend.

But Bruins fans were not the only ones to notice their loss to Washington. Paul Myerburg of USA Today Sports dropped the Bruins five spots in his college football re-ranking. Falling from the No. 85 spot on his ranking to the No. 89 spot, the Bruins tumbled.

With USC and Fresno State still on the schedule, the Bruins have a chance to rise in Myerburg’s rankings, close out the season with an even 6-6 record, and build momentum for 2025 with an influx of talent joining the team.

Big Ten with four top ten teams in week 11 rankings

Four Big Ten teams are ranked within the top ten of both major polls ahead of week 11.

The Big Ten will enter week 11 of the 2024 college football season with four of the top ten teams in the country in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25.

The Oregon DucksOhio State BuckeyesPenn State Nittany Lions, and Indiana Hoosiers are all ranked within the top ten in both polls.

Oregon is the consensus No. 1 team, with all 62 first-place votes in the AP Poll and 53 of 54 first-place votes in the Coaches poll. The Ohio State Buckeyes, fresh off a top-five win over then No. 3 Penn State, are the No. 3 team in both polls.

Penn State, after suffering its first loss of the season, dropped to No. 6 in the AP Poll and No. 7 in the Coaches poll, while Indiana made its top ten debut at No. 8 and No. 10 in each respective poll.

Outside of the four top-ten-ranked teams, the Big Ten has no other conference members ranked within the top 25 this week. The Washington Huskies were the only other program to receive votes in the AP Poll, while the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Illinois Fighting Illini all received votes in the Coaches Poll.

Why UCLA’s win over Rutgers can change the season

The Bruins first Big Ten win has the chance to change their fortunes.

The Bruins earned a much-need 35-32 win over Rutgers last weekend to improve to 2-5 on the season. Though UCLA’s chances at bowl eligibility look slim, the Bruins did enough to take down a gritty Big Ten program with a winning record.

In the 2024 college football season, losing has been contagious for the Bruins, which begs the question: Can the opposite be true?

The Bruins have five remaining games on their schedule this season, none of which are against a ranked opponent. Though it is unlikely that the Bruins win out in their first season in the Big Ten, the team that took the field against Rutgers showcased the best of what the Bruins are capable of.

Eric Bieniemy’s anemic offense looked both competent and explosive. The defense, save for a late touchdown drive, played a tight ballgame. But most importantly, first-year head coach DeShaun Foster looked to have his players ready for an important game on the road and they delivered.

It is easy to overreact to the Bruins win, but at the very least, UCLA put forth a framework for how the team can win each and every week.

It is a small step, but an important one for the Bruins as they play out the back half of their season looking to finish the season above .500.

UCLA football takes down Rutgers for first Big Ten win

The Bruins finally notched their first win in the Big Ten, correcting some of their past mistakes against Rutgers.

The UCLA Bruins have finally snapped their losing streak. Taking down their first Big Ten opponent of the season, head coach DeShaun Foster and UCLA topped a talented Rutgers team 35-32.

Scoring a season-high 21 points in the first half, the Bruins offense looked markedly more dynamic in the much-needed win. Starting the game strong with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, UCLA set the tone early.

In an explosive performance by quarterback Ethan Garbers, the Bruins signal-caller topped 400 total yards, finishing with 32/38 passing, 383 yards through the air, and five total touchdowns.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s struggling offense found a rhythm and created a solid framework for the Bruins going forward. Able to finally establish the run, the Bruins rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown.

UCLA’s defense played characteristically well and showcased what this Bruins team is capable of doing when firing on all cylinders.

Leading by nine heading into the fourth quarter, Foster and the Bruins closed out the game and held on for the win.

For Foster, he earns his first win in the Big Ten and breathes life back into a program in desperate need of a boost. The Bruins look to continue their win streak at Nebraska in two weeks’ time.

Rutgers loses captain Mo Toure after season-ending ACL tear

A big blow for Rutgers.

The UCLA Bruins have a lot of new opponents on the 2024 schedule with their move to the Big Ten Conference. One of them is the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in what will be a long distance traveled between the two schools.

In 2024, UCLA and Rutgers face off In Piscataway in October, which is one reason why UCLA travels more miles than any other Big Ten team this season.

The Scarlet Knights might be in for a difficult season, and things took a brutal turn with senior defensive captain Mo Toure being ruled out for the season due to a torn ACL, per Pat Lanni.

“Greg Schiano just announced that LB and senior captain Mo Toure will be out for the season with a torn ACL. It’s a significant blow for a defense that was counting on his dynamic ability. More to come.”

This is now the second ACL tear in three years for Toure, so it’s a big blow to the Rutgers defense ahead of the 2024 season.

UCLA and Rutgers face off on October 19.

Rutgers names ex-Minnesota QB as starter as Gavin Wismatt transfers to Kentucky

Rutgers QB situation gets an update.

The UCLA Bruins are headed for the Big Ten Conference, so it is worth examining some happenings that have been going on around the league.

Athan Kaliakmanis has been named the starting QB for Rutgers after spending time at Minnesota. As a result, Gavin Wismatt has entered the portal and then decided to head to Kentucky.

Wismatt had started 18 games over the past two seasons. He threw for 1,651 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2023, but now he leaves Rutgers and heads for Lexington.

Kristian Dyer of Rutgers Wire laid out five destinations for Wismatt, including Western Kentucky, Florida International, Tulane, and others, so the Wildcats are an interesting fit.

Kaliakmanis threw for 1,838 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions last year for Minnesota, so he stays in the Big Ten and is now the starter for Rutgers.

The Big Ten quarterback carousel continues to spin after the Spring transfer portal window sent many players elsewhere.

UCLA visits Rutgers and their new QB Kaliakmanis on Oct. 19 this coming season.

Badgers start season 2-0 in Big Ten

The Badgers football team hosted Rutgers at Camp Randall for a conference matchup on Saturday in Madison, defeating the Scarlet Knights 24-13. Wisconsin got out to a 10-0 lead and Rutgers was threatening to score prior to the largest defensive play of the year for the Badgers.

While the Scarlet Knights were inside the 10 yard-line, Badgers cornerback Ricardo Hallman stepped in front of a pass from Gavin Wimsatt with less than 20 seconds left, returning it all the back for a 95-yard touchdown.

After taking a 17-0 lead into halftime, Wisconsin was able to play conservatively in the second half and take home a 24-13 victory and improve to 2-0 in Big Ten play.

SEC and Big Ten lead Power Five conferences in athletic department revenue

USA TODAY Sports compiled an in-depth analysis of the Power Five’s athletic department’s revenue, and unsurprisingly, the SEC and Big Ten led the way by a sizable margin.

The saying goes that you need to spend money to make money, but in the realm of college athletics, it can work vice-versa just as easily.

When putting the landscape of college sports under a lens, the term “Power Five” gets thrown around a lot, and rightfully so. The SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Pac-12, and Big 12 conferences are home to some of the most competitive Division I programs in the country, and the revenue gap between them and other conferences is unparalleled.

But when pitting each of them against each other, just how big of a stark contrast is there when it comes to which conferences, and more granularly which schools, generate more athletic operating revenue than others?

USA TODAY Sports sought to put that answer to the test with an in-depth analysis of the Power Five’s athletic department’s revenue for the 2022 fiscal year.

As explained in the original piece, the data originates from financial reports the schools provide annually to the NCAA, which USA TODAY Sports obtained in partnership with the Knight-Newhouse Data project at Syracuse University.

The findings shed light on some distinct disparities between each of the Power Five conferences, with one’s lowest revenue-generating school nearly matching that of another conference’s average program.

The breakdown is included below, which was compiled using median values for their schools’ revenues, rather than the averages. Each conference is ranked in the order of highest to lowest:

Rutgers Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Scarlet Knights miss from the Big Ten West Division?

There aren’t any layup games for Rutgers, but missing Wisconsin and Purdue is a good thing. However, not getting Illinois or Northwestern – two teams that didn’t go bowling last year – doesn’t help.

The Scarlet Knights get Iowa and Nebraska at home, and have to go on the road to Minnesota in late October, not late November. That’s not all that bad.

In the East, they have to go on the road to face Ohio State and Michigan State, but they get Penn State and Michigan at home. The problem is November with rapid-fire big games against Michigan, at Michigan State, and Penn State.

Rutgers Football Schedule What To Know: Two non-conference games doesn’t help

There aren’t any killer games before the Big Ten season, but two of the three are on the road. If Rutgers has any dream of going bowling, it has to take down Temple on the road and enjoy the two-foot putt against Wagner.

If it can beat Boston College on the road to start the season, it should be a 3-0 start with two wins on the road to tighten the team up for what’s coming.

Rutgers Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s going to take a few road upsets to get to six wins and bowling, but it’s a manageable enough slate to get those.

The timing of the games aren’t all that bad. It would’ve been nice to start out the season with more home date instead of going to Boston College and Temple, but that’s nitpicking a bit.

There aren’t two road games in a row, and there’s a good midsection of Nebraska and Indiana at home around an open date in a make-or-break moment for the season – the Scarlet Knights have to win those two.
