CHECK IT OUT: Best pics from Badgers 38-17 win over Purdue

Badgers extend their win streak to 17 straight over conference foe

The Badgers football team travelled to West Lafayette to face Purdue on the road for a conference matchup on Friday at Ross Ade Stadium, defeating the Boilermakers 38-17. Wisconsin bursted out to a 21-3 lead, scoring a touchdown on each of their first three possessions of the game.

Tanner Mordecai ran for a score on both of the team’s first two drives before Braelon Allen punched one in on the ground to cap off a 16-play, 75-yard possession which chewed up 8:41 off of the first half clock.

Although Purdue was able to narrow the deficit to 27-17 in the third quarter, that’s as close as the Boilermakers would get in the contest as Wisconsin’s defense forced three turnovers on the day, two of which were in the second half.

Here are some of the best pictures from the game:

WATCH: Badgers analyst catches up with Luke Fickell before Purdue game

Can Badgers continue their streak versus the Boilermakers?

The Badgers football team (2-1) is set to take on Purdue (1-2) on the road Friday night at 6 PM and color analyst Mark Tauscher caught up with head coach Luke Fickell before the contest.

Fickell has started his tenure in Madison with two home wins and a loss on the road so far this season, but Friday will be his first Big Ten game as Wisconsin’s head coach.

Tauscher asked him a few questions including one about the atmosphere and energy heading into the game. Fickell explained how these are the types of contests that he and some of his players came to Wisconsin to be a part of.

Wisconsin vs. Purdue: Prediction, point spread, odds, best bet

Will Wisconsin win a 17th straight versus Purdue?

The Badgers (2-1) play the Purdue on Friday and if you’re looking to do some last-minute betting research, you’re in luck! We’ll give you the latest point spread, money line odds and over/under number, as well as the information you’ll need to make the smartest bet.

The game starts at 6 PM and can be seen on Fox Sports 1.

Wisconsin is coming off of a 35-14 Week 3 win over Georgia Southern at Camp Randall. The defense was able to force six turnovers, snatching five interceptions while also recovering a fumble. Safety Hunter Wohler recorded 10 tackles, including a sack, while intercepting two passes in the victory, earning himself the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Purdue on the other hand, lost to Syracuse 35-20, turning the ball over four times by losing three fumbles and throwing an interception. The Boilermakers’ defense in particular, struggled to stop Syracuse’s quarterback Garrett Shrader from compiling 195 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.

Wisconsin will look to keep the good times going in Week 4 and this is how BetMGM sees the game going:

  • Point spread: Wisconsin -5.5
  • Money line: Wisconsin -225 / Purdue +180
  • Over-under: 53.5

It’s unclear exactly what injuries each team are dealing with but here’s the most recent info:

Wisconsin (Week 3 Injury Report) :

  • CB Michael Mack

  • WR Trech Kekahuna

  • WR Tommy McIntosh

  • CB Max Lofy

  • TE Riley Nowakowski

  • WR Grady O’Neill

  • TE Cam Large

  • C Jake Renfro

  • OLB Aaron Witt

  • OL Peyton Lange

  • WR Chris Brooks

  • TE Jack Pugh

  • DE Isaiah Mullens

Purdue (As of Monday Sept. 18):

  • Paul Piferi (Questionable)
  • Gus Hartwig (Questionable)
  • Salim Turner-Muhammad (Questionable)

With both quarterbacks Tanner Mordecai (Wisconsin) and Hudson Card (Purdue) making their Big Ten conference play debuts, I feel like both guys will look to prove themselves. Both defenses struggle to stop big plays and I feel like Wisconsin has more home run hitters, so they’ll be able to pull away from the Boilermakers to grab their third win of the year.

Prediction: 34-24 Wisconsin

Badger Countdown: Wisconsin has 52 all-time wins over Big Ten rival

The 2023 college football season is slowly approaching and the Badgers are now 52 days away from their opener against Buffalo on Sept. 2.

The 2023 college football season is slowly approaching and the Badgers are now 52 days away from their opener against Buffalo on Sept. 2. With Luke Fickell now in charge, many expect Wisconsin to be amongst the best in the Big Ten this year.

Heading into the 2023 campaign, the Badgers hold a very impressive streak versus a Big Ten foe, winning 16 consecutive matchups against Purdue. Overall, Wisconsin holds a 52-29-8 all-time record versus the Boilermakers.

The two squads met in October last season and the Badgers came out on top 35-24 at Camp Randall. Quarterback Graham Mertz threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns while running back Braelon Allen churned out 114 yards and a score on the ground.

On defense, John Torchio recorded two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown in the first quarter. Overall, the defense forced three interceptions and held the Boilermakers in check.

Wisconsin and Purdue will meet up again in 2023, this time on September 22 in West Lafayette, a location in which the Badgers haven’t lost at since 1997.

USC and Big Ten football history: Trojans vs Purdue head to head series

1998 was memorable for the QBs who played in the game. 1967 was a Rose Bowl. USC’s best win vs Purdue came in 1976.

The USC Trojans aren’t richly familiar with the Purdue Boilermakers. USC leads the all-time series 3-1, and the most recent matchup came in 1998 with the Trojas winning 27-17.

These two teams will face off in 2024 in West Lafayette, Ind.

There are only four games to look at in the history of this series.

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports looked at the 1998 game:

“Three reasons why the 1998 non-conference game in Los Angeles deserves to be remembered: one, it was the starting debut for Purdue quarterback Drew Brees, then a sophomore; two, it was also the debut for USC freshman and future Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer, who tossed his first career touchdown in the win; and three, temperatures at the Los Angeles Coliseum reached 110 degrees on the field, causing fans, band members and cheerleaders to wilt in the heat.”

That was no ordinary game. Neither was the 1967 Rose Bowl in which Purdue and future Super Bowl champion Bob Griese upset USC. It is Purdue’s only Rose Bowl win.

USC’s best win over Purdue was not the 1998 game, since the Trojans didn’t amount to much of anything under coach Paul Hackett that year. USC’s best win over the Boilermakers was in 1976.

“USC finished No. 2 in the country at the end of the 1976 season,” we noted. “Ricky Bell was the star tailback on that Trojan team. He and USC went into West Lafayette and beat Purdue, 31-13.”

Badgers’ September schedule all set for 2023 football season

What does the broadcast schedule look like for Badger football in September?

The Wisconsin Badgers’ football season is on the horizon and all of the broadcast times have been set for the month of September. Heading into their first season under Luke Fickell, the Badgers are ushering in a new era of football in Madison.

After a disappointing 7-6 campaign in 2022 that included the firing of head coach Paul Chryst, interim head coach and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard also walked out the door. On top of that, offensive coordinator Bobby Engram never gelled and has also moved on ahead of 2023.

Hitting the reset button, athletic director Chris McIntosh brought in Fickell from Cincinnati, who in turn, was joined in Madison by offensive coordinator Phil Longo (UNC) and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel (Cincinnati).

On top of the coaching changes, over a dozen athletes transferred to Madison, most notably former four-star quarterback Tanner Mordecai (SMU).

Here’s how their opening month shakes out:

Former USC tight end coach Seth Doege heads to Purdue, reunites with Graham Harrell

Doege and Harrell, two members of the Mike Leach coaching tree, find a common home. Lincoln Riley, of course, is part of the Leach tree and its Texas Tech roots.

The USC Trojans’ coaching tree continues to move to different parts of the country.

Former offensive coordinator Graham Harrell spent one year at West Virginia before being named the OC at Purdue once Ryan Walters was hired as the new head coach.

Now, another former USC assistant is joining the Boilermaker staff: former tight end coach Seth Doege, who will be the tight end coach for Purdue (h/t Matt Zenitz of On3).

Doege was the tight end coach at USC in 2021 and then went to Ole Miss as an analyst for the Rebels on Lane Kiffin’s staff. Kiffin is, of course, another former USC coach.

Doege was also USC’s offensive quality control coach for two years, so he and Harrell know each other from their time working with Clay Helton in Southern California.

Also, both Harrell and Doege are former Tech quarterbacks, so they have even more familiarity with one another.

Purdue watched Jeff Brohm leave for Louisville in a bit of a surprising move, and they pivoted and brought in Walters, who was an often-mentioned favorite for the Colorado Buffaloes job after the year he had with Illinois as the defensive coordinator.

Purdue is searching for an offensive transformation, and bringing in Doege and Harrell is a good way to get things started.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin bests Purdue 35-24 on Homecoming

Some of the best photos from Wisconsin football’s 35-24 Homecoming victory over the Purdue Boilermakers:

On Saturday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers bested the Purdue Boilermakers in a 35-24 Homecoming victory. This win was crucial for the Badgers’ bowl eligibility, and they played up to the challenge, controlling the game from start to finish.

The Wisconsin defense shut down quarterback Aidan O’Connell and the Boilermakers’ offense with three interceptions. Badgers’ safety John Torchio grabbed two of the interceptions, including a 31-yard pick-six that helped them to build the 21-3 halftime lead.

The Wisconsin offense thrived in a well-balanced attack and took advantage of the short fields provided by the defense. Running back Braelon Allen had another 100-yard day on the ground, while Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz finished with 203 passing yards and two touchdowns.

The Badgers will have a bye week next weekend before facing the Maryland Terrapins at Camp Randall on Nov. 5.

Twitter reacts to Wisconsin S John Torchio’s first-half pick-six against Purdue

Some of the best Twitter reactions to Wisconsin S John Torchio’s pick-six against the Purdue Boilermakers:

The Wisconsin Badgers started off hot on their opening drive against the Purdue Boilermakers and capped it off with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Skyler Bell. The Badgers’ defense immediately returned the favor with an outstanding pick-six by Wisconsin safety John Torchio.

On Purdue’s second play from scrimmage, Torchio jumped the slant from Boilermakers’ quarterback Aidan O’Connell to receiver Tyrone Tracy and took it to the endzone. This was Torchio’s fourth interception of the season, and he is now tied with Illinois defensive back Kendall Smith for the most interceptions in the Big Ten.

It is great to see the Badgers’ defense make a statement early against one of the best passing offenses in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin vs. Purdue: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

How to watch the Wisconsin Badgers against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

This will be a difficult Big Ten West matchup for the Badgers after their double-overtime loss to the Michigan State Spartans last weekend. The Wisconsin defense will need to rebound after giving up 34 points and nearly 400 total yards to the Spartans. This will be a hard task against one of the best offenses in the Big Ten in Purdue.

On offense, the Badgers will need to limit their turnovers and be efficient with their possessions to keep pace with the Boilermakers. A weakness that Wisconsin could exploit is the poor pass defense of Purdue, which has given up over 300 passing yards to several teams this season.

Hopefully, the Badgers can get back in the win column this week, and prevent themselves from falling to Purdue for the first time since 2003.
