2022 Giants training camp preview: Wide receivers

The New York Giants have a deep and talented group of wide receivers but there are still many questions and concerns.

The New York Giants wide receivers group is currently a huge question mark at the moment. Injuries, inconsistency and a poor offensive game plan plagued the unit lat season.

This year, with a new approach on offense under first-year head coach Brian Daboll and coordinator Mike Kafka, the air is said to be clear again to throw the football.

The unit has a new position coach in Mike Groh, who will try to marshal up this once promising group.

Here is a quick preview heading into training camp.

2022 Giants free agency: Contract details for new players

A breakdown of the contracts the New York Giants have handed out to free agents, as well as details of restructures and pay cuts.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen entered the new league year and free agency with very little money to spend. The idea was to clear upwards of $40 million in salary cap space while hunting for bargains on the open market.

Through a week and a half, the Giants have fared relatively well. They’ve been unable to trade either cornerback James Bradberry or running back Saquon Barkley, but they’ve found other ways to clear room.

New York has also added a number of new contracts, including multiple offensive linemen. But only one of them was a big-ish money signing.

Here’s a quick look at the basic contracts for all new signees, as well as some information on restructures and pay cuts.

Note: New details will be added as they become available.

Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents

The New York Giants have begun to assign (potentially temporary) jersey numbers to their newly signed free agents.

The first wave of free agency has officially come and gone in the NFL, and to no one’s surprise, the salary cap-crippled New York Giants were very calculated with their moves.

There were no big-splash signings, but the team did focus a lot of their early attention on quality veteran offensive linemen. They also added a few bodies to the quarterback room and signed some depth at wide receiver.

Other signings were also made, but nothing necessarily worth writing home about.

What will interest fans however, are the new jersey numbers being assigned to some of the incoming free agents. But we want to remind everyone before they rush out and buy a jersey: these numbers are potentially temporary and subject to change.

Not all jersey numbers have been assigned yet, either. We will continue to update this post as the Giants work to hand out the digits.

Giants are expected to sign WR Robert Foster

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Robert Foster, says his agent.

The New York Giants are strapped for cash and expected to shop for sales throughout free agency, so it should come as little surprise that’s how they kicked things off.

As the NFL’s pre-free agency negotiation window opened on Monday, the Giants re-signed wide receiver C.J. Board. Then they added to the depth at the position by agreeing to terms with Robert Foster.

Foster’s agent announced the news.

The Buffalo Bills, who have obvious ties to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, signed Foster as an undrafted rookie out of Alabama in 2018. After two seasons in Western New York, Foster briefly joined the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Washington Commanders.

The 27-year-old Foster spent last season with both the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys.

In 30 career games (seven starts), Foster has hauled in 32 receptions for 624 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also rushed the ball twice for 29 yards and has six special teams tackles. He earned a 72.1 Pro Football Focus grade as a rookie.

WATCH: Former Alabama WR catches first TD in a Dolphins uniform

No … it’s not who you think!

Last night, all eyes were on the stars of the Miami Dolphins, two of which are Alabama products: Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle. The two of them did play in the first half, and had amazing performances, but a third former member of the Crimson Tide made sure his name was called during yesterday’s preseason game.

Former Alabama wide receiver Robert Foster has had a bit of a difficult time adjusting to the NFL. Now on team No. 4 in just as many seasons, Foster looks for a team to call home. Also, he hasn’t caught a touchdown since his rookie season back in 2018.

That changed when last night, in the Dolphins’ Week 2 preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, Foster reeled in a touchdown in the third quarter.

The pass was not from former Alabama quarterback Tagovailoa, but rather from Miami’s backup passer, Jacoby Brissett.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Robert Foster and all other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Report: Packers losing WR Robert Foster to Washington Football Team

Foster, a member of the Packers practice squad, is reportedly signing with the Washington Football Team’s 53-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers will lose Robert Foster before the speedy wide receiver ever steps foot on the field in a green-and-gold uniform.

According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, the Washington Football Team is signing Foster off of the Packers’ practice squad.

Foster, who played his first two seasons with the Buffalo Bills, signed with the Packers practice squad on Sept. 9. He spent the first six weeks of the regular season on the practice squad in Green Bay.

Despite injuries at receiver, the Packers never elevated Foster from the practice squad to the active roster. In Washington, Foster will join the team’s 53-man roster.

Foster is an undrafted free agent from Alabama. He caught 30 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns over 26 games with the Bills in 2018 and 2019.

Once Foster departs, the Packers will have only two wide receivers on the practice squad: Reggie Begelton and Juwann Winfree. Kalija Lipscomb was released on Tuesday.

Report: Washington signs WR Robert Foster off Packers practice squad

Washington added WR Robert Foster to the roster on Tuesday night, hoping to add some depth to a depleted position group.

With their already thin wide receiver corps banged up after the Week 6 game against the New York Giants, the Washington Football Team is taking some action and adding some reinforcements to the roster.

On Tuesday night, it was reported that Washington signed WR Robert Foster off of the Green Bay Packers practice squad, giving him a chance to compete for some snaps throughout practice this week and potentially see some game time on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Foster is a third-year WR who was undrafted out of Alabama, and he has three touchdowns on 27 catches in his career, most of which as spend with the Buffalo Bills.

Packers complete 16-player practice squad, add WR Robert Foster, LB De’Jon Harris

The Packers completed their practice squad on Wednesday, signing former Bills WR Robert Foster and former Patriots LB De’Jon Harris.

The Green Bay Packers now have a full, 16-player practice squad.

The team officially announced the signings of receiver Robert Foster and linebacker De’Jon Harris on Wednesday, completing the practice squad entering Week 1.

Both players weren’t in Green Bay during training camp and needed to pass physicals and COVID-19 testing before officially joining the practice squad.

Foster, a former member of the Buffalo Bills, caught 30 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns over 26 games the last two seasons. He will wear No. 16 with the Packers.

Harris, previously of the New England Patriots, is an undrafted rookie free agent. He was a three-time All-SEC pick and a tackle machine at Arkansas. He will wear No. 59 with the Packers.

Here is the Packers’ full practice squad, as of Wednesday:

LB Krys Barnes
WR Reggie Begelton
S Henry Black
RB Damarea Crockett

The Packers will reportedly add running back Dexter Williams to the practice squad at some point, but they would have to make a move to sign him.

Robert Foster, Vincent Taylor find ways to other teams after cuts

Former Bills players Robert Foster, Vincent Taylor find new teams.

Two players who were with the Buffalo Bills during training camp have  found their ways to other rosters following a weekend filled with roster movement across the NFL.

En route to trimming their own roster to 53 players, the Bills released wide receiver Robert Foster and defensive tackle Vincent Taylor. Both players were part of deep position groups with the Bills. While Foster was a bit more popular during his time in Buffalo, Taylor was the one of the two that actually found his way to a team’s final roster.

On Sunday when the wavier wire completed, Taylor was claimed by the Cleveland Browns. The Browns sat at the No. 10 overall spot in the wavier wire order, so comparatively, he was a pretty high priority.

Foster did land on another team himself, but just on their expanded practice squad. The team snagged Foster was the Green Bay Packers. Prior to the roster cut deadline, the Bills were reportedly attempting to trade Foster and tight end Jason Croom, neither ended up being shipped out and were cut. However, Croom did end up back on Buffalo’s practice squad unlike Foster.

Foster was signed by the Bills as a UDFA of the team in 2018 and eventually found his way from the practice squad to the active roster where he impressed as a rookie. In 2019, he did not find himself on the field much, though. He only recorded three catches. Taylor was a sixth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2017 and spent his first two seasons there before he was cut after training camp prior to last season. The Bills then picked him up a few days later.

If those two stay at those respective teams for the rest of the season, they won’t see the Bills at all. Buffalo is not scheduled to play the Browns or Packers during the 2020 regular season.

REPORT: Former Alabama WR Robert Foster signs with Packers practice squad

Former alabama wr robert foster signs with the Green Bay packers practice squad after being released by the buffalo bills.

Former Alabama wide receiver Robert Foster was relatively quiet during his time with the Crimson Tide. After going undrafted in 2018, Foster had a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills, but was released as the team looks to make a run at the AFC East title in 2020.

While with the Bills, Foster appeared in 26 games over two seasons where he totaled 30 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns.

Foster did not spend too much time without a team. AL.com’s Matt Zenitz reports the Green Bay Packers have signed Foster to their practice squad.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on Robert Foster as he looks to work his way onto the active roster with the Packers in his third season in the NFL.
