Compensation, salary cap details for Panthers’ trade of WR Robbie Anderson

What are the Panthers getting in return for Robbie Anderson? And what happens with the remaining two years of his contract? Here are the details.

When Robbie Anderson was booted from Sunday’s game by interim head coach Steve Wilks, it was apparent that his time with the Carolina Panthers was coming to a close. It also seemed obvious that if the seventh-year wideout were to be traded, that the organization would be lucky to get anything back in return.

Well, that actually happened on Monday.

Following three eventful seasons in Carolina, Anderson was shipped off to the Arizona Cardinals. The initial reports on the deal, including the official release from the team itself, were vague in terms of compensation for the receiver—even classifying the return as “some future draft capital.”

But, not too long after the news, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed the details. Headed back to the Panthers will be two future pieces of draft capital—a 2024 sixth-round pick and 2025 seventh-round pick.

Luckily for Carolina, they found themselves a desperate buyer in Arizona. The Cardinals just lost a key vertical threat of their own, as Marquise Brown sustained a potentially serious injury in the Week 6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Unluckily for Carolina, however, they’ll still be on the hook for a massive amount of dead cap money thanks to Anderson’s two-year extension he inked last summer. While they do save $690,000 for 2022, the Panthers will have to take on a total hit of $19.4 million over the next two seasons.

The Arizona Cardinals made a surprising move on Monday. In the wake of Marquise Brown’s injury and the return of DeAndre Hopkins, they have traded for a wide receiver.

Reported first by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals have traded for Carolina Panthers receiver Robbie Anderson.

Anderson was sent to the locker room after halftime of the Panthers’ loss on Sunday and was going to end up released.

The Cardinals now acquire him and are on the hook for his remaining salary of roughly $700,000.

He has one year remaining on his contract. He is due $8.8 million in 2023.

The team announced the trade and is giving up “undisclosed draft compensation.”

In six games this season, the 6-3, 190-lb wideout has 13 catches for 206 yards and a touchdown.

Panthers trade WR Robbie Anderson to Cardinals

Per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have traded WR Robbie Anderson to the Cardinals.

[mm-video type=video id=01gfkghr8at777d76hhj playlist_id=01eqbxc4awx2fz2sn9 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gfkghr8at777d76hhj/01gfkghr8at777d76hhj-8bc39d8cfa292e847e5e181d599e2cd1.jpg]

On Sunday, Robbie Anderson was sent off the field and into the locker room by Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks. And now, we know he won’t be coming back.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Monday afternoon, the seventh-year wide receiver has been traded to the Arizona Cardinals. Rapoport did not, in his initial report, disclose any information on what’ll be heading back to Carolina in the deal.

Anderson played in 39 games for the organization over the past three years. In that span, he reeled in 161 catches for 1,821 yards and nine touchdowns.

His best season with the Panthers, without a doubt, came in 2020—when he posted career-highs in targets (136), receptions (95), receiving yards (1,096), first downs (49) and catch rate (69.9 percent).

That campaign helped him earn a two-year, $29.5 million extension back on Aug. 24, 2021. Since signing that pact, Anderson has totaled 66 grabs, 725 yards and six scores in 23 outings.

Carolina will now have to absorb $19.4 million in dead money over the remaining two years of Anderson’s contract.

Update (1:27 p.m. ET): Per an official release from the Panthers, they will receive undisclosed draft compensation for Anderson.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

QB Skylar Thompson (MIA) – Hand
QB Kenny Pickett (PIT) – Concussion
QB P.J. Walker (CAR) – Neck
RB J.K. Dobbins (BAL) – Knee
RB Deon Jackson (IND) – Quad
WR Kendrick Bourne (NE) – Toe
WR Randall Cobb (GB) – High Ankle
WR Jamal Agnew (JAC) – Knee
WR Jaylen Waddle (MIA) – shoulder
WR Marquise Brown (ARI) – Foot
WR Robbie Anderson (CAR) – Benched
TE Cameron Brate – Neck

Chasing Ambulances

QB Skylar Thompson (MIA) – Injured his hand when it hit a helmet after he passed. Teddy Bridgewater finished the game. Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return for Week 7, which makes this inconsequential.

QB Kenny Pickett (PIT) – Suffered a concussion after a hard hit in the third quarter and did not return. Mitchell Trubisky finished the winning effort against the Buccaneers and would start again in Miami this week if needed.

QB P.J. Walker (CAR) – Injured his neck and gave way to Jacob Eason. Walker later said he would be fine for Week 7 hosting the Buccaneers, but everything in Carolina is murky right now with running backs, wideouts, and quarterbacks.

RB J.K. Dobbins (BAL) – His knee tightened and was held out from the second half. He seemed to be back to form in Week 4 but now has struggled in the last two weeks. His status for this week will be determined later in the week but he’ll likely play, the question is how much if he is active?

RB Deon Jackson (IND) – The third-string back that turned into a stud against the Jaguars left the game for most of the fourth quarter with a quad injury. Jonathan Taylor went through limited practices last week, so he’s likely to return. Jackson was a great as a replacement and makes a prudent hold for the Taylor owner.

WR Randall Cobb (GB) – Was carted off the field and was reported to have a high-ankle sprain. The early speculation is that he’ll miss  multiple weeks.  Amari Rodgers is the next man up, but the entire receiving corps for the Packers has disappointed and digging through the depth chart will not likely improve anything.

WR Jaylen Waddle (MIA) – Hurt his shoulder late in the game but had 129 yards before he left. Waddle later said that he would be okay for this week’s matchup with the Steelers, plus Tua Tagovailoa should be back as well. Barring negative practice reports, Waddle should be fine.

WR Marquise Brown (ARI) – He was injured near the end of the loss to the Seahawks when a defender fell on his foot. He wore a walking boot after the game and was limping. The Cards host the Saints on Thursday night, so there isn’t much time to heal up.

WR Robbie Anderson (CAR) – He argued with his position coach on the sideline about never getting a pass thrown to him and he was sent to the locker room in the fourth quarter. Anderson is rumored to be on the trading block and it appears that the Panthers may not want too much just to get rid of an obviously unhappy player.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

TE George Kittle (SF) – The 49ers star tight end still has not scored this season, but he led the team with eight catches for 83 yards when they fell behind and needed to abandon the run. It’s encouraging to see him return to high-volume usage, and hosting the Chiefs this week should spark the need to throw more.

TE Kyle Pitts (ATL) – He finally scored a touchdown this season but still was held to only three catches for 19 yards in the win over the 49ers. It was nice to see but cannot be considered more than just a single-play event and not a growing trend. So long as Marcus Mariota is the quarterback, there is no reason to expect Pitts to be used up to his potential.

WR Tyquan Thornton (NE) – The speedy rookie debuted in Week 5 with just two catches for seven yards. Versus the Browns, he turned in a fantasy breakout with four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown, plus three rushes for 16 yards and a second score. The lower volume of passing in New England will make him a risky start no matter how much confidence he builds, but his addition as a rusher will help him to offer more consistent stats if they continue his dual role.

TE Robert Tonyan (GB) – He’s had minimal use this year, but against the Jets, Tonyan led the Packers with ten catches for 90 yards. That may be more than just a one-week blip. The Packers lost Randall Cobb to a high-ankle sprain, so the tight end may continue to see more targets as Aaron Rodgers contends with a marginal set of receivers.

RB JaMychal Hasty (JAC) – Because two running backs just were not enough, the Jags are now using three. Travis Etienne had 12 touches, James Robinson had 13 touches, and Hasty is getting playing time. His second of three runs went for a 61-yard touchdown in the second quarter. His other two touches lost four yards. But the Jaguars are leaning toward being more of a rushing team than a passing team. Hasty adds to the committee but takes away from the other two backs.

RB Deon Jackson (IND) – The Colts missed Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, but Jackson stepped in to great effect. He ran twelve times for 42 yards and a touchdown, plus caught ten passes for 79 yards as the top fantasy running back for the week. Taylor is likely back this week for the game in Tennessee, but Jackson could potentially cut into Hines’ role as a receiving back.

WR Rashid Shaheed (NO) – The undrafted free agent wideout was called up from the practice squad to help fill in for the three starting wideouts who were out. The Weber State product failed to catch his one pass but ran for a 44-yard touchdown on his only rush.  He’ll likely head back to the practice squad when the starters return, but the 4.4/40-time speedster looked sharp for his score.

RB Kenyan Drake (BAL) – J.K. Dobbins had his knee “stiffened up” and sat out of the second half of the loss to the Giants. Drake was limited to ten carries but gained 119 yards and a touchdown. And it wasn’t just one long run that spiked the total. He turned in runs of 30, 30, 20, and 15 yards. He stopped running in the fourth quarter when the Ravens went to a pass-heavy script. Depending on Dobbins’ health, Drake could see more use on Sunday when the Browns visit.

WR Wan’Dale Robinson (NYG) – The rookie returned from his four weeks off with a knee injury and  caught three passes for 37 yards and one touchdown. His four targets were second only to Daniel Bellinger (5). The Giants are not a good passing team, but Robinson was a second-round pick that runs a 4.4 40-time and is expected to become a starter. The Giants’ wide receiver depth chart may be the most open one in the league, so Robinson deserves a spot on a roster.

WR Allen Robinson (LAR) – After a three-game stretch that saw Robinson total seven catches for 42 yards combined, it was safe enough to give up on Robinson. Not so fast. Versus the Panthers, Robinson turned in a season-best five catches for 63 yards and one score. His six targets were second only to Cooper Kupp (8). It can’t be considered more than a one-week blip, but it also means that you cannot dump him on the waiver wire.

RB Kenneth Walker (SEA) – The second running back taken in the 2022 NFL draft ran for 97 yards and one score on 21 carries. He added two catches for 13 yards in his debut in the wake of Rashaad Penny’s season-ending leg injury. DeeJay Dallas only ran twice for one net yard, so Walker is likely to maintain his heavy workload if his success continues.

WR DeAndre Hopkins (ARI) – Returns to the Cardinals after a six-week suspension and maybe just in time since Marquise Brown injured his foot and the Cardinals play the Saints on Thursday night.

Huddle player of the week

Joe Burrow  –  The Bengals haven’t seen the same success that they had in 2021 when they went to the Super Bowl, but he just turned in his best effort of the season and the best of anyone in Week 6. Burrow threw for exactly 300 yards and three scores, plus ran for 25 yards and a fourth touchdown. His play lifted the Bengals to a win at the Saints.

Studs and duds from Panthers’ Week 6 loss to Rams

On Sunday, Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey accounted for 74.5 percent of his offense’s yards from scrimmage—the second-highest share of the past two decades.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”FICds7QRai-2303759-7498″]

A change at head coach and a different starting quarterback wasn’t enough to spark an immediate change for the Carolina Panthers—as they lost, 24-10, to the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Here are our studs and duds from Sunday’s Week 6 defeat.

Biggest takeaways from Panthers’ Week 6 loss to Rams

Steve Wilks’ first game as Panthers interim HC was, uh, interesting to say the least.

So, uh, that was something, wasn’t it?

Although it didn’t result in a win, the Carolina Panthers’ Week 6 outing against the Los Angeles Rams produced some intriguing “results” to say the least. Let’s dig into it.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson on being kicked out of game: ‘I was confused’

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson wasn’t okay with about being taken out on third down during Sunday’s game. He was also confused as to why he was sent to the locker room.

[mm-video type=video id=01gfhggn324scb7p2wah playlist_id=01eqbxc4awx2fz2sn9 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gfhggn324scb7p2wah/01gfhggn324scb7p2wah-f45b2239e0789c75e1e17fbaff4a2fff.jpg]

Robbie Anderson just wants to help the Carolina Panthers win. But he can’t do that if he’s not on the field.

The seventh-year wideout, who got into a shouting match with receivers coach Joe Dailey and was eventually sent to the locker room by interim head coach Steve Wilks on Sunday, made that argument following the team’s 24-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. When asked why he was so openly frustrated during the Week 6 outing, Anderson said he wasn’t expecting to be taken out on third down attempts.

“I’m here to do all I can to help us win,” he said. “It’s third down, I’m being taken out the game. I don’t think I should be okay with that, you know what I’m sayin’? So, I made a comment. It’s money down. Why am I being taken out? And that’s that.”

Anderson, in a game where Carolina amassed all of 110 passing yards, finished the contest with zero targets. Now, through six games, he’s totaled just 13 receptions for 206 yards and one touchdown.

In his postgame presser, Wilks referred to Anderson’s unofficial ejection as a “sideline-type situation,” one the pass catcher was admittedly puzzled about.

“I was confused, honestly,” Anderson added when asked of his emotions at the time. “I was honestly confused ’cause I wanna be in the game. I’ve never been told in X amount of years to get out the game, in the fourth quarter. I was honestly confused and upset by it as I should be.”

Well, that confusion could soon lead to a transition for Anderson, who may very well be on the outs by the end of the month.

Robbie Anderson got sent to the locker room after a sideline tantrum and NFL fans couldn’t believe it

Yeah, he’s GONE.

The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule this week and introduced Steve Wilks as interim head coach ahead of Sunday’s game against the Rams. Well, Wilks didn’t have to wait long to make his first dramatic move as interim head coach.

For months, it had been evident that wide receiver Robbie Anderson was unhappy in Carolina. He reacted publicly (and negatively) to the Panthers’ interest in Baker Mayfield, and the situation hadn’t improved as his targets have been down thus far in 2022. It’s gotten to the point where Anderson could be a trade candidate this season.

So, of course, the scene from Sunday’s game might actually speed up his departure from Carolina. Because, yeah, this cannot continue…

Cameras caught Anderson getting into an argument with wide receivers coach Joe Dailey. And later in the second half, Wilks had seen and heard enough from the disgruntled receiver.

He told Anderson to head to the locker room and stay there to the absolute dismay of Anderson.

You almost never see an NFL player get kicked off the field by his own team, which probably indicated how distracting Anderson’s sideline antics were for the rest of the team.

NFL fans also had thoughts on the dramatic sequence in Los Angeles.

Steve Wilks sends Panthers WR Robbie Anderson to locker room

After shouting in the face of WR coach Joe Dailey and isolating himself on the sideline, Robbie Anderson was kicked out of Sunday’s game by interim HC Steve Wilks.

[mm-video type=video id=01gfhggn324scb7p2wah playlist_id=01eqbxc4awx2fz2sn9 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gfhggn324scb7p2wah/01gfhggn324scb7p2wah-f45b2239e0789c75e1e17fbaff4a2fff.jpg]

We may have just seen the last game from Robbie Anderson in a Carolina Panthers uniform.

And that game ended after he was sent off the field during the team’s Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Interim head coach Steve Wilks booted the seventh-year wideout, who openly exhibited his frustrations throughout the afternoon, to the locker room.

Earlier in the contest, Anderson got into it with wide receivers coach Joe Dailey—with FOX cameras catching the two engaging in a face-to-face shouting match prior to halftime. He then proceeded to isolate himself from the rest of the team on the sideline.

Anderson, who was thrown to zero times on Sunday, hasn’t had the 2022 he probably envisioned—as he’s been targeted just 27 times over six games. He’s amassed 13 catches, 206 receiving yards and one touchdown.

A dismal 2021 has likely contributed to those emotions as well. Last year saw Anderson post career-lows in receiving yards (519), yards per reception (9.8) and catch rate (48.2 percent).

The 29-year-old has also been the subject of some recent trade rumors—something that might come to fruition sooner rather than later.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson shouts at coach Joe Dailey on sideline

Cameras caught Robbie Anderson getting heated in the face of Panthers WR coach Joe Dailey.

[mm-video type=video id=01gfhggn324scb7p2wah playlist_id=01eqbxc4awx2fz2sn9 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gfhggn324scb7p2wah/01gfhggn324scb7p2wah-f45b2239e0789c75e1e17fbaff4a2fff.jpg]

Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson is starting to feel the frustration . . . again. And he’s starting to show it on the sideline . . . again.

Late in the second half of the team’s Week 6 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams, the seventh-year veteran got into the face of receivers coach Joe Dailey. FOX cameras caught the heated shouting match:

Through five games entering the day, Anderson totaled 13 catches, 206 receiving yards and one touchdown off 27 targets. Now, with two more quarters under his belt to this point, he stands at *checks box score* 13 catches, 206 receiving yards and one touchdown off 27 targets.

Anderson is no stranger to venting his frustrations on the sideline. In fact, it happened twice during the 2021 campaign—with his first coming in the Week 5 game against the Philadelphia Eagles and the second less than a month later against the New England Patriots.

This latest outburst may not bode well for Anderson’s future in Carolina, which is already in question following recent reports of his availability via trade.
