A former Spartans wide receiver has been named to Action Network’s preseason All-American team.

UNLV wide receiver Ricky White was a first team selection on the Action Network’s preseason All-American team released earlier this week. White started his career at Michigan State where he had a solid freshman season in 2020.

White is entering his third season with the Rebels this year. In his two seasons at UNLV, White has recorded 139 receptions for 2,102 yards and 12 touchdowns.

UNLV wide receiver Ricky White has been named to the preseason Biletnikoff Award watchlist. The Biletnikoff Award is handed out to the top wide receiver in college football at the end of the season.

White is entering his third season with the Rebels after transferring from Michigan State to UNLV in 2021. White starred for the Spartans in 2020, notably recording eight receptions for 196 yards and one touchdown in the upset win of Michigan.

Since transferring to UNLV, White has recorded 139 receptions for 2,102 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last season, White nearly had 1,500 receiving yards for the Rebels.

SP+ PROJECTION: UNLV by 1.0

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: UNLV 53.87% win probability (29.92-19.79)

On Saturday, the UNLV Rebels will take on the Boise State Broncos in the Mountain West Conference (MWC Championship game. It should be an exciting game and highly contested. Both teams have a good chance of winning.

Pass to set up the run

The Rebels like to run the ball, but the Broncos feature the second-best run defense in the MWC, giving up 127.2 yards per game. This game was where UNLV could use the pass to set up the run. Boise State gives up 254.8 passing yards per game, which is last in the MWC.

Rebels quarterback Jayden Maiava has thrown for 2,628 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. Receiver Ricky White leads the Rebels with 75 receptions, 1,300 yards, and seven touchdowns. Look for UNLV to use quick passing and get the ball to White early so it can loosen the Broncos’ defense, then the Rebels can run.

Stop the run

UNLV must be successful in slowing down the Boise State rushing attack. The Broncos average 207.7 yards per game. They are led by Ashton Jeanty, the Mountain West offensive player of the year who averaged 164.6 all-purpose yards per game and scored 18 touchdowns, though George Holani contributed when healthy with 534 yards and five touchdowns in six games and freshman Jambres Dubar flashed his potential with 335 yards on 62 attempts.

UNLV gives up 144.6 rushing yards per game and 4.2 yards per rush, so they must tackle well and play in the correct gaps to slow down the Broncos’ rushing attack. If UNLV can slow down the Boise State running game and force them to pass, they will have a great chance of winning. UNLV’s leading tackler, Jackson Woodard, must be all over the field for the Rebels.

Special teams

The Rebels have an excellent kicker, Jose Pizano, who was recently named a Lou Groza Award finalist, has made all 50 of his extra points, and has connected on 23-of-25 field goals, the longest coming from 52 yards. Returner Jacob DeJesus averages 26.4 yards on kickoff and 16.8 yards on punt returns, both of which led the Mountain West. In close games, field position and field goals can be crucial, and the Rebels have players who can be game-changers on special teams.

Prediction

The Rebels will win  27-24 with a Pizano last-second field goal. I think UNLV will slow down the Broncos rushing attack and make plays in the passing game.

Players to Watch For UNLV Rebels Offense

Barry Odom hired Brennan Marion to be the UNLV Rebels, offensive coordinator. Marion is installing his “Go-Go Offense,”

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g8ggatak2kacq2ps player_id=none image=]

New UNLV Rebels head football coach Barry Odom first hired Bobby Petrino to be Rebels offensive coordinator. After just 20 days at UNLV, Petrino took the Texas A&M offensive coordinator job.

Odom then pivoted to hire Brennan Marion to be the Rebels new offensive coordinator. Marion is installing his “Go-GO Offense,” built around a no-huddle running game and a vertical passing attack.

Quarterback Doug Brumfield

The Rebels have quarterback Doug Brumfield back from injury to run the offense. He has a strong arm and can make plays with his legs; Brumfield is the perfect quarterback for the go-go system; he needs to stay healthy.

Last season in ten games, Brumfield threw for 1,898 yards, with ten touchdowns and five interceptions on 64.6% passing. He also rushed for 261 yards and six touchdowns.

Brumfield led the Rebels to a 4-1 start last year before injuries derailed their season.

UNLV’s Offense Under Brennan Marion’s Leadership

Receiver Rickey White

All-conference receiver Ricky White returns; he caught 52 passes for 6222 yards and four touchdowns in his first season at UNLV. In Marion’s offense, White’s numbers should increase with many down-the-field targets.

White wants to stretch the field more and have more explosive plays. He averaged 12.5 yards per reception last year and said his YAC – yards after the catch – must improve.

Running Backs

With leading running back Aidan Robbins transferring to BYU, senior Courtney Reese returns. Reese averaged 7.3 yards per carry last year and ran four 370 yards.

At 5’8 165 pounds, he is unlikely to be the every down back. The Rebels hit the transfer portal and brought in junior Donavyn Lester from William & Mary and senior Vincent Davis from Pittsburgh.

Last year Lester ran for 533 yards and eight touchdowns, while Davis rushed for 274 yards and one touchdown. We will probably see a running back by committee in Las Vegas this year.

If Brumfield can remain healthy, the UNLV offense could be fun to watch because they have talent on offense. It just will take time to come together, but if it clicks, the fast pace could be killer to opposing defense.

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. Ricky White

Not lopsided either way.

Notre Dame needs to find production wherever it can right now, and [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] is about as reliable as it gets. In fact, you could go so far as to say that [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] is relying on Mayer to a fault. Still, you can’t argue with the fact that the Irish are getting production from any of their offensive skills players that seems very hard to come by at the moment. Sometimes, you can’t afford to be picky.

UNLV’s representative in this matchup is Ricky White, a transfer from Michigan State. While he doesn’t quite have the same number of touchdowns or as high of a receiving yards average as Mayer, he has been more efficient at getting yards in general. Really though, there isn’t a whole lot to separate these two from each other, at least on the stats sheet. It will be very interesting to see if either can stand out in this game.

Former Michigan State football WR Ricky White has huge game in opener

Ricky White put on a show in his first game with UNLV

Ricky White will forever be known to Spartan fans for his monster performance in MSU’s 2020 victory over rival Michigan. Things looked promising for White in East Lansing after that performance as a true freshman, but an off the field issue resulted in White having to transfer out of the program.

White made the move to transfer to UNLV of the Mountain West. In UNLV’s first game of the 2022 season against Idaho State, and White’s first with the program, White had a Michigan game esq performance. White finished with 8 catches for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns.

You can watch one of his touchdowns here:

Former Michigan State football wide receiver transferring to UNLV

Ricky White had one of the most memorable games of any Michigan State football freshman I have seen in quite some time when he had 196 yards and a touchdown in Mel Tucker’s first win over Michigan in 2020, and now he will take that big play ability to UNLV.

White announced his decision on Friday night after entering the NCAA transfer portal back in early December.

Check out how the transfer portal is shaking out for MSU in 2022

As many know, the transfer portal is set to be a huge part of Mel Tucker’s tenure at Michigan State. The new era of college football is centered around the use of the transfer portal. Tucker used the portal to flip a roster from a 2-5 season in his first year to an 11-2 season in year two, mainly in part to the additions through the transfer portal.

The transfer portal should be viewed as another form of recruiting, as a team will have two ‘recruiting classes’ per year, the traditional high school class and a transfer class.

Transfers do work both ways, while the team will add multiple players through the portal, losing players to the portal will also become a reality every season.

Take a look at how Michigan State’s 2022 transfer portal, both incoming and outgoing, looks like:

Michigan State football loses WR Ricky White to the transfer portal

Michigan State sophomore WR Ricky White has entered the transfer portal

Another defection from the Michigan State football program has been made public this afternoon. Wide receiver Ricky White has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

White busted onto the scene as a true freshman when he had 196 yards and a touchdown in a game against Michigan.

Due to an off-the-field incident prior to the 2021 season, White was away from the team for the duration of the season.

Michigan State will look to replace White through their 2022 recruiting class.

Michigan State confirms that Ricky White and Michael Gravely are still enrolled in fall courses

While they haven’t been participating with team activities, Ricky White and Michael Gravely are still enrolled at MSU for fall courses

[mm-video type=video id=01fcc2vd6714p24wt3zq playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fcc2vd6714p24wt3zq/01fcc2vd6714p24wt3zq-80e2f65f9ce0b71b19999cff0a7ca696.jpg]

Last week, Michigan State football head coach Mel Tucker confirmed rumors that sophomore wide receiver Ricky White and freshman defensive back Michael Gravely are not currently participating in team activities.

On Tuesday, Detroit Free Press reporter Chris Solari confirmed with the university that, while the two players are not with the team right now, they are still enrolled in fall classes at MSU.

Not much is known publicly outside of rumors for what the situation is there, but it will be an interesting story to follow this fall as Ricky White was one of the more promising offensive players last season.
