UNLV Rebels Fell to Boise State 44-20 in Mountain West Championship

The UNLV Rebels hosted the Boise State Broncos in the Mountain West Conference Championship

The UNLV Rebels hosted the Boise State Broncos in the Mountain West Conference Championship. There were 31,473 fans in attendance, but that did not matter to the Broncos as they beat the Rebels 44-20.

The early part of the game was a back-and-forth, and both teams scored 14 points in the first quarter. UNLV’s touchdowns came on a five-yard rush from Vincent Davis Jr. and then a thrilling 47-yard interception return by linebacker Fred Thompkins to even things up.

However, Boise State converted two Rebel turnovers into 10 points en route to taking a 31-17 halftime lead, limiting the hosts to three points after the break, and never looking back after that, outscoring UNLV 13-3 in the second half.

Unable to Stop the Run

The Rebels’ run defense could not stop the Broncos rushing attack, as they rushed for 301 yards. Ashton Jeanty led Boise State with 153 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. George Holani added 76 yards, along with quarterback Taylen Green rushing for 90 yards and two touchdowns. One of Green’s touchdowns was a 70-yard run. It is hard to win games, giving up 301 rushing yards and 5.9 yards per carry.

Turnovers

Rebels quarterback Jayden Maiava had a tough day at the office, turning the ball over three times (two interceptions and a loss fumble). He passed for 166 yards but threw no touchdowns.

Unable to Run the Ball

It was a tough day for the Rebels as the Broncos took away their rushing attack. UNLV rushed for 81 yards on 28 rush attempts, which is suitable for 2.9 yards per carry. Vincent Davis Jr. led the team in rushing with 55 yards and a touchdown.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 tag=16543652]

Ultimately, the Broncos had an old-school football mentality: run the ball and stop the run, and they executed it well. They also had efficient quarterback play, while Green only threw 15 times; he did complete 12 of those attempts. Green also threw two touchdown passes.

SP+ PROJECTION: UNLV by 1.0

FEI PROJECTION: Even

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: UNLV 53.87% win probability (29.92-19.79)

On Saturday, the UNLV Rebels will take on the Boise State Broncos in the Mountain West Conference (MWC Championship game. It should be an exciting game and highly contested. Both teams have a good chance of winning.

Pass to set up the run

The Rebels like to run the ball, but the Broncos feature the second-best run defense in the MWC, giving up 127.2 yards per game. This game was where UNLV could use the pass to set up the run. Boise State gives up 254.8 passing yards per game, which is last in the MWC.

Rebels quarterback Jayden Maiava has thrown for 2,628 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. Receiver Ricky White leads the Rebels with 75 receptions, 1,300 yards, and seven touchdowns. Look for UNLV to use quick passing and get the ball to White early so it can loosen the Broncos’ defense, then the Rebels can run.

Stop the run

UNLV must be successful in slowing down the Boise State rushing attack. The Broncos average 207.7 yards per game. They are led by Ashton Jeanty, the Mountain West offensive player of the year who averaged 164.6 all-purpose yards per game and scored 18 touchdowns, though George Holani contributed when healthy with 534 yards and five touchdowns in six games and freshman Jambres Dubar flashed his potential with 335 yards on 62 attempts.

UNLV gives up 144.6 rushing yards per game and 4.2 yards per rush, so they must tackle well and play in the correct gaps to slow down the Broncos’ rushing attack. If UNLV can slow down the Boise State running game and force them to pass, they will have a great chance of winning. UNLV’s leading tackler, Jackson Woodard, must be all over the field for the Rebels.

Special teams

The Rebels have an excellent kicker, Jose Pizano, who was recently named a Lou Groza Award finalist, has made all 50 of his extra points, and has connected on 23-of-25 field goals, the longest coming from 52 yards. Returner Jacob DeJesus averages 26.4 yards on kickoff and 16.8 yards on punt returns, both of which led the Mountain West. In close games, field position and field goals can be crucial, and the Rebels have players who can be game-changers on special teams.

Prediction

The Rebels will win  27-24 with a Pizano last-second field goal. I think UNLV will slow down the Broncos rushing attack and make plays in the passing game.

College Football Conference Championship Games Without Divisions. What Would’ve Happened?

College football conferences without divisions? What would the championship games have been without them?

College football conferences are starting to do away with divisions. How would the conference championship games have been if there weren’t the division formats?

College Football Conference Championships Without Divisions – What Would They Have Been?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

The NCAA said it was cool for conferences to ditch the division formats when it comes to the championship games. Going forward – if conferences want to – the championships can be between the two top teams by conference winning percentage.

The Big 12 was already there, the Pac-12 jumped at the chance, and the Mountain West followed suit. Others are sure to do the same soon.

So how would college football history have been rewritten if the conference championship games didn’t have divisions?

As you’d expect – and as it’ll likely be going forward – the big winners were the powerhouse teams that had one bad day against the division rival.

Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Clemson, Florida, Alabama, Oregon – all would’ve been in a lot more conference championships, and there wouldn’t have been as many out-of-the-blue one-hit wonder teams getting in.

Here’s what would’ve happened in each conference championship had there not been divisions.

No Division Conference Championships: What Would’ve Happened?

Mountain West | Pac-12 | SEC | Sun Belt

ACC Conference Championship: What Would’ve Happened Without Divisions

Everything worked out fine lately, but there was a long stretch when just about everyone was in the ACC title hunt. It all worked in the divisional format, but it would’ve been insane for a few seasons without them. The tie-breakers would’ve been brain-melting in a few of the years.

The years when the championship would’ve been different without divisions are in bold, and the ones when the matchup would’ve been what actually happened aren’t. The records are for the regular season conference season only.

2021 Pitt 45, Wake Forest 21

2020 Clemson 34, Notre Dame 10
This was 1 vs 2 – ACC had no divisions

2019 Clemson 62, Virginia 17

2018 Clemson 42, Pitt 10

2017 Clemson 38, Miami 3

2016 Clemson 42, Virginia Tech 35
No Divisions Championship: Clemson vs Louisville
Lamar Jackson and 7-1 Louisville would’ve had another shot at 7-1 Clemson after losing the first time around in a 42-36 thriller. Virginia Tech was 6-2.

2015 Clemson 45, North Carolina 37

2014 Florida State 37, Georgia Tech 35

2013 Florida State 45, Duke 7
No Divisions Championship: Florida State vs Clemson
The Duke thing was fun – it was 6-2 – but it would’ve been a high-powered rematch of the 8-0 Seminoles and 7-1 Clemson.

2012 Florida State 21, Georgia Tech 15
No Divisions Championship: Florida State vs Clemson
Clemson’s only ACC loss was to 7-1 FSU. Georgia Tech was 5-3.

2011 Clemson 38, Virginia Tech 10

2010 Virginia Tech 44, Florida State 33

2009 Georgia Tech 39, Clemson 34
No Divisions Championship: Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech
This would’ve been debatable. 7-1 Georgia Tech was a lock, but 6-2 Clemson and 6-2 Virginia Tech didn’t play each other and both lost to the Yellow Jackets. This likely would’ve come down to overall record or ranking. The Hokies would’ve received the very questionable call.

2008 Virginia Tech 30, Boston College 12
No Divisions Championship: Boston College vs Georgia Tech
Tis would’ve been an ugly mess, but it would’ve been a fascinating race. Duke was 1-7 and Virginia was 3-5, but six teams were 4-4 and in it until late, and Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech all went 5-3. Out of the four 5-3 teams, the Yellow Jackets and Eagles each had only one loss among the group, the Hokies and Seminoles each had two.

2007 Virginia Tech 30, Boston College 16

2006 Wake Forest 9, Georgia Tech 6
No Divisions Championship: Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech
America might have been spared from the game that actually happened. Georgia Tech would’ve been in at 7-1, but 6-2 Virginia Tech beat 6-2 Wake Forest.

2005 Florida State 27, Virginia Tech 22
No Divisions Championship: Virginia Tech vs Miami
The Bobby Bowden ACC Championship narrative wouldn’t have happened. FSU was 5-3, so it would’ve been 6-2 Miami against 7-1 Virginia Tech.

Mountain West Championship: San Diego State vs Utah State Game Preview

Why Utah State Will Win

Get this offense rolling and look out.

The Aggies have been great in the first year under Blake Anderson, cranking up the offense to be second in the Mountain West behind Fresno State, doing a great job of moving the chains on third downs with a strong midrange passing attack that can open things up and work deep.

San Diego State’s defense might be amazing, but this isn’t the type of team that wants to get behind.

Everything about the Aztecs is about controlling clock and tempo. Fresno State was able to get up fast in the 30-20 win in late October, and the SDSU offense couldn’t get back into the game.

The Utah State defense is good enough at getting into the backfield to screw up the Aztec offense, and veteran QB Logan Bonner – a playmaker at Arkansas State before following Anderson over to Utah State – isn’t going to panic or buckle against everything the SDSU D brings.

College Football Expert Picks, Championship Week

Why San Diego State Will Win

Underestimate San Diego State at your own peril.

The Aztecs had to beat Boise State to get to Mountain West Championship, and they looked like they were dead.

The Broncos rolled out to a 16-3 lead midway through the second quarter and appeared to have the right formula to roll to a win like they did against Fresno State.

San Diego State flipped a switch.

Jordan Brookshire stepped in at quarterback and was brilliant, WR Jesse Matthews kept rolling through his fantastic season, and the amazing defense locked down hard.

The Aztecs are second in the nation against the run behind Wisconsin, they’re great at forcing takeaways – coming up with three against Boise State – and they’ve been able to hold up against most of the big bombers on the slate.

Jake Haener and Fresno State were able to get the job done in the win, but Nevada’s Carson Strong bombed away and UNLV threw for 372 yards, and it didn’t matter because the run defense took over.

And …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

What’s Going To Happen

San Diego State should be able to control the game with its ground attack.

It’s all slowed down a bit over the second half of the season. The Aztecs dominated on the ground in the first five games – including against Utah and Arizona – with over 200 rushing yards in each, but the offense became more balanced as defenses started to load up more to stop the deep backfield.

Utah State’s run defense is about to have a hard time.

Wyoming was able to run for 362 yards on the Aggies a few weeks ago, and while that was a bit of an anomaly, San Diego State will start to do a bit of that.

Utah State hasn’t faced a whole slew of tough ground games – it came up with the win over Air Force in a shootout – and now it will have to deal with the Aztec lines.

This won’t be scintillating. It’ll be clinical.

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Mountain West Championship

This might be one of the roughest college football seasons ever. There are a whole lot of issues, nothing seems right, and everyone just seems like they want to get through it. Meanwhile, San Jose State has become one of the season’s best stories as it goes through a historic run.

The program has had just one winning season since 2006 and just three since 1992. The 11-2 2012 season was amazing, but this is the first ever 6-0 start for the program, and now there’s a shot at the program’s first conference championship since taking a piece of the 1991 Big West title, and the first outright title since 1990. On the flip side …

Boise State is going for its fifth Mountain West title since 2012 and its 15th conference championship since 1999. This hasn’t been a normal year for a Bronco program that came into the season hoping for at least a New Year’s Six bowl spot, but it’s here, it’s unbeaten in conference play, and it’s getting a chance to hold on to its title. After battling through injures, COVID, and all the issues everyone else is, winning this title wouldn’t just be thrown on the pile – it would be a terrific achievement.

The Mountain West is here. Remember, this was one of the first conferences to tap out early on, and it came back, put together a season, had to relocate a few teams, and it got to a championship game in what turned out to be an interesting season.

The world might be paying attention to the ACC Championship while this is going on, and the second half of the Sun Belt title – maybe – but this has the potential to be one of the best games of the day. These two teams are going to bring a great fight.
