Notre Dame defensive back finds new home

All the best to him going forward!

Passionate Notre Dame fans are familiar with [autotag]Litchfield Ajavon[/autotag] not so much because of his memorable moments on the football field but because he was the personality behind much of Notre Dame football’s social media presence in recent years.

Ajavon played in parts of five games in 2021 and had been with Notre Dame since signing in the 2019 recruiting class.  Litchfield graduated from Notre Dame this past weekend after announcing he was entering the transfer portal on December 9 of last year.  Now we know that Ajavon’s next stop on his educational and football journey will be at Rice after he shared that information on Wednesday.

All the best to Litchfield in his next step!

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

A former Kansas City Chiefs receiver has taken a step to further his coaching career.

After spending time as a recruiting assistant at Washington State University in 2021, former Chiefs WR Samie Parker is set to join the Rice University coaching staff as an offensive quality control coach. Parker announced the new job on Twitter on Friday, April 8.

A fourth-round pick out of Oregon in the 2004 NFL draft, Parker was a member of the Chiefs from 2004 to 2007. He started 31 games for the Chiefs, catching passes from Trent Green, Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle during his career. In those four seasons, Parker caught 110 passes of 180 targets for over 1,500 yards and seven touchdowns.

After his time in Kansas City ended, Parker bounced around with four different teams in 2008. After failing to catch on with the Raiders in 2009, Parker shifted focus from the NFL and started playing Arena Football. His last ride as a player came in 2012 with the Toronto Argonauts.

Parker has been coaching since 2015, getting his first opportunity at Fort Valley State as a WRs and coordinating special teams. He’s twice interned with the Chiefs under Andy Reid in 2016 and 2018. He’s also spent time at Whittier College as a WRs coach and passing game coordinator. In 2020, he was a coach with The Spring League, working with WRs, TEs and return specialists.

Parker isn’t the only former Chiefs player on the Rice coaching staff. Earlier this offseason. Former K.C. third-round draft pick Philip Gaines, who is a Rice alumnus, also joined the coaching staff as a cornerbacks coach.

Chiefs draft pick Phillip Gaines now coaching cornerbacks at Rice

Former #Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines has returned to his alma mater to assist as a cornerbacks coach after a seven-year NFL career.

A former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick has returned to his alma mater to potentially begin a career in coaching.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the team’s first spring practice, Rice University head coach Mike Bloomgren announced a pair of additions to his coaching staff. One of those additions was former Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines, who will be serving as a defensive assistant working with cornerbacks under CBs coach Gerard Wilcher.

“A couple of new additions that you’ll see out here today,” Bloomgren told media members ahead of practice. “One returning to Rice is Phillip Gaines, after his seven-year career in the NFL. He’ll be out here assisting with our corners.”

Gaines was drafted by Kansas City in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft under then-General Manager John Dorsey. He primarily played slot corner for the Chiefs in Bob Sutton’s defense, but he battled injuries during his time in Kansas City. They really disrupted his development and ability to be a long-term contributor to the team.

Gaines appeared in 41 games over four seasons with the Chiefs, making 16 starts and recording 100 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, 14 passes defended and one interception. He also spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns in 2018. He made his last NFL stop with the Houston Texans from 2019 through 2020.

The other addition announced for the Rice coaching staff was former Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson, who has been hired as the team’s RBs coach.

WATCH: Four Texas running backs record a touchdown against Rice

It was a touchdown party for the Texas running backs on Saturday night.

Stan Drayton is somewhere smiling at the fact that he may have assembled the best running back room in the nation.

There was an exclusive party in the end zone on Saturday evening, and four of Texas’ running backs were in attendance.

The Longhorns unleashed a deadly rushing attack against Rice that saw seemingly every running back that touched the ball tearing up the opposing defense. Starting running back Bijan Robinson led the team with three touchdowns and 127 yards rushing, the Texas running back room as a whole combined for six touchdowns and amassed over 400 yards rushing.

Bijan Robinson also made history in Week 3, as he became the fastest running back at Texas to reach 1,000 career rushing yards since the legendary Jamaal Charles.

Even with the change at quarterback, it was evident that the game plan was to feed the running backs as much as possible. The 38 rushes was the most of the season for Texas, and it is evident that Sarkisian should consider utilizing all of the backs as much as possible.

On every touch, it seemed as if one of the running backs could have gone the distance. Take a look at five of the six that did:

Throwback Thursday: The last 10 Texas-Rice matchups

Rice has only defeated Texas one time since 1966.

As Texas prepares to face Rice in Week 3 of the 2021 college football season, let’s take a look at their most recent matchups.

As is the case for the last few decades, the Longhorns are expected to blow out the Owls in convincing fashion this year. The all-time series sits at 73-21-1 in favor of Texas.

Since 1966, Rice has only defeated Texas one time. It came in 1994, when the Longhorns traveled to Houston and fell to the Owls 19-17.

From 1930-1960, which was the only time rice was considered to have the slight edge over the Longhorns, the Owls recorded 17 of their 21 total wins over Texas.

The largest win between the two programs came in 1915, when Texas defeated Rice 59-0.

The Longhorns are currently on a win-streak dating back to 1995 and the two schools have faced off 95 times. It’s unlikely that Rice will break that streak this week.

Take a look at the last 10 matchups between the two programs:

Everything Steve Sarkisian said to the media on Thursday ahead of Rice matchup

The Longhorns had a lot to address this week in practice.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the media on Thursday to discuss the upcoming matchup against Rice.

After announcing at the beginning of the week that he was making a change at the quarterback position, giving Casey Thompson the nod over Hudson Card, Sarkisian is hoping the rest of the team will perform as well as he expects.

Many concerns emerged after the loss or Arkansas, primarily the offensive line struggles. In the case of the defense, they gave up over 300 yards rushing, and looked like the Texas of old that could not tackle anyone.

The offensive line had troubles blocking, which resulted in the quarterbacks being under pressure every play. It was almost as if the defense for Arkansas was starting in the backfield every play.

There were no bright spots from the game except for Thompson leading the offense to a couple touchdowns when the game was out of reach, and B.J. Foster’s great interception in the third quarter.

Sarkisian was being peppered with many questions about personnel changes, and what his plans are moving forward. Let’s take a look at everything the first-year head coach had to say ahead of the Week 3 matchup against Rice.
