Top 20 Oklahoma Sooners all-time in career passing yards

A look at the top 20 passers in Oklahoma Sooners history in career passing yards.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had their fair share of quality quarterback play over the years. That play has earned numerous All-American awards and four Heisman trophies.

Oklahoma has had success with a variety of offensive styles and quarterback play. That shows up when you look at the Sooners’ all-time leaders in career passing yards. Sure you have [autotag]Landry Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag], who threw for more than 10,000 yards in their career with the Sooners. Then you have a player [autotag]Jamelle Holieway[/autotag] who is top 20 in both career passing yards and career rushing yards. Holieway and [autotag]Jack Mildren[/autotag] had more rushing touchdowns in their career than they did passing touchdowns.

There is one quarterback inside the top 10 all-time in career passing yards that didn’t play in the last 20 years and that guy is still with the Oklahoma Sooners: wide receivers coach [autotag]Cale Gundy[/autotag]. Gundy is No. 6 in career passing yards. Makes you wonder what kind of damage he could have done in a modern spread offense.

After two seasons in Norman, Dillon Gabriel was productive enough to enter the top 10 in career passing yards at the University of Oklahoma. His 55 passing touchdowns ranks fifth all-time and he finished tied for 17 in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Gabriel had a prolific career with Oklahoma and now will hope to have continued success with the Oregon Ducks.

Here’s a look at the top 20 Oklahoma Sooners in career passing yards.

Arguably the most productive position group among the five-stars that have played for the Oklahoma Sooners has been running back. Defensive tackle is the other spot that could make a case for best five-star position group with [autotag]Gerald McCoy[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommie Harris[/autotag].

Only one five-star rated player never played a snap for the Sooners, linebacker Chris Patterson. Patterson went the junior college route before playing a season with Kansas State.

Oklahoma set to square off against Oregon in the Valero Alamo Bowl

The Sooners have their bowl destination. Oklahoma will play Oregon in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29 beginning at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN.

How fitting it is. After demonstrating ultimate loyalty to Oklahoma throughout the Sooners’ head coaching transition, interim head coach Bob Stoops gets a chance to exact some revenge.

Oklahoma is officially set to play Oregon with kickoff set for 8:15 p.m. on ESPN in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29 from San Antonio, Texas.

Stoops and OU were famously robbed against the Ducks back in the 2006 season when the Sooners lost 34-33 in Eugene, Ore., after an onside kick was erroneously awarded to Oregon.

The fallout led the Pac-10 to suspend the officiating crew and the instant replay officials that worked that OU-Oregon tilt for one game.

Oklahoma fans haven’t forgotten and Stoops probably hasn’t either. It adds an intriguing storyline entering this Valero Alamo Bowl.

Oklahoma has played Oregon seven times in its history. The Sooners have won six of the seven all-time meetings, most recently in the 2005 Holiday Bowl.

The Sooners won that matchup 17-14 after OU linebacker Clint Ingram intercepted Oregon quarterback Brady Leaf at the 10-yard line with 33 seconds remaining.

Rhett Bomar was Oklahoma’s quarterback that day. Bomar completed 17-of-30 passes for 229 yards with one 17-yard touchdown pass to fullback J.D. Runnels.

OU’s leading rusher was running back Adrian Peterson who carried the football 23 times for 84 rushing yards. Fellow running back Kejuan Jones had an 8-yard rushing touchdown in the Sooners’ upset win over the Ducks.

Oklahoma also beat Oregon 31-7 in Norman during the 2004 season under Stoops.

The Sooners’ other victories over Oregon include a 6-0 win in 1958, a 17-0 win in 1966, a 68-3 win in 1972 and a 62-7 win in 1975.

This will be Oklahoma’s 55th bowl appearance overall but first in the Alamo Bowl. OU has played in San Antonio one time in its history. The Sooners beat then-No. 1 Missouri 38-17 in the 2007 Big 12 Championship game from inside the Alamodome.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford passed for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Missouri while OU running backs Allen Patrick and Chris Brown combined for three rushing scores. Patrick finished with 88 rushing yards in the 2007 Big 12 Championship game.

Oklahoma owns a 30-23-1 mark all-time in bowl games. OU beat Florida 55-20 in the 2020 Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic to end last season.

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler passed for 247 yards and three touchdowns against the Gators, while OU running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Marcus Major combined to rush for 296 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Both eclipsed the century mark. Stevenson rushed it 18 times for 186 yards and Major carried it nine times for 110 rushing yards.

Sam Bradford wasn’t highly-touted coming out of high school but he would eventually put his name in the Oklahoma record books.

Fab Four: Selecting Oklahoma football’s Mount Rushmore of all-time recruits

On the eve of early signing day, Sooners Wire recalls the most hyped commits in school history.

Oklahoma and football powerhouse are terms that go together in 2020 as much as they did in the 1970s, and it has been the case for far longer.

The Sooners’ history includes seven national championships, 49 conference championships, more than 100 All-Americans and seven Heisman Trophy winners.

But not every player who plans on playing at the University of Oklahoma pans out. The cream rises to the top, and not every Oklahoma great was the great coming out of high school.

The Sooners have welcomed a veritable who’s who of college football, starting with the Bud Wilkinson era in the 1950s and continuing through the tenures of Barry Switzer in the 1970s and 1980s and Bob Stoops in the 2000s and 2010s. Now that history and tradition are in the hands of Lincoln Riley.

However, four recruits separate themselves from the rest. This isn’t about production, awards or overall career—this is about the best recruits Oklahoma has signed.

Sooners Wire has put together the Mount Rushmore of Oklahoma recruits. Two went on to have Hall of Fame football careers while the other two had promising careers that ultimately sputtered and didn’t finish with the Sooners.

Some predate recruiting rankings that started in the early 2000s. The others come after.
