Fab Four: Selecting Oklahoma football’s Mount Rushmore of all-time recruits

Alongside Peterson in the 2004 recruiting class was the No. 4 overall recruit in the country, Rhett Bomar.

He was the next best thing before the next best thing was ever invented in the recruiting world. Bomar was a polarizing player who brought a ton of momentum to Oklahoma, which was coming off a disappointing 7-4 regular season but a big win over No. 6 Oregon in the 2005 Holiday Bowl.

After that, Bomar’s situation went downhill quickly.

Bomar and other players were caught being paid by Big Red Sports and Imports—a car dealership in Norman, Oklahoma—for work they had not done. It led to his dismissal from the team, and that was the last the Sooners saw from their one-time next great quarterback.

He went on to play quarterback at Sam Houston State before getting a quick cup of coffee in the NFL.

It was a quick career at Oklahoma for Bomar, but the hype and the early glory cannot be denied. He remains one of the more polarizing players to ever play for the Sooners.
