Top 20 Oklahoma Sooners all-time in career passing yards

A look at the top 20 passers in Oklahoma Sooners history in career passing yards.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had their fair share of quality quarterback play over the years. That play has earned numerous All-American awards and four Heisman trophies.

Oklahoma has had success with a variety of offensive styles and quarterback play. That shows up when you look at the Sooners’ all-time leaders in career passing yards. Sure you have [autotag]Landry Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag], who threw for more than 10,000 yards in their career with the Sooners. Then you have a player [autotag]Jamelle Holieway[/autotag] who is top 20 in both career passing yards and career rushing yards. Holieway and [autotag]Jack Mildren[/autotag] had more rushing touchdowns in their career than they did passing touchdowns.

There is one quarterback inside the top 10 all-time in career passing yards that didn’t play in the last 20 years and that guy is still with the Oklahoma Sooners: wide receivers coach [autotag]Cale Gundy[/autotag]. Gundy is No. 6 in career passing yards. Makes you wonder what kind of damage he could have done in a modern spread offense.

After two seasons in Norman, Dillon Gabriel was productive enough to enter the top 10 in career passing yards at the University of Oklahoma. His 55 passing touchdowns ranks fifth all-time and he finished tied for 17 in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Gabriel had a prolific career with Oklahoma and now will hope to have continued success with the Oregon Ducks.

Here’s a look at the top 20 Oklahoma Sooners in career passing yards.

McGee not likely candidate for WR coach position

Garrick McGee will most likely not be the next Arkansas wide receivers coach, despite his connections to Bobby Petrino and having worked here previously.

Even though Garrick McGee had a lot of traction on social media following the report that Kenny Guiton would be vacating his position, it appears he won’t be having a second Arkansas stint after all.

According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, the former Arkansas offensive coordinator and Tulsa native is not a candidate for the position and has spoken to no one with the Razorbacks regarding it.

McGee was the quarterbacks coach for all four years of Bobby Petrino’s head coaching tenure at Arkansas, and the offensive coordinator the final two years.

Since Petrino was fired in 2012, McGee has bounced around jobs in a variety of roles, including UAB, Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Purdue, and Louisville, with his second stint with the Cardinals being his current position.

Texas A&M wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig has also been linked to the opening.

Sophomore wide receiver Andison Coby entered the NCAA transfer portal Jan. 13.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Coby appeared in five games for the Vols in 2021, totaling one reception for five yards under first-year head coach Josh Heupel.

Coby has committed to play at Western Michigan.

Tim Lester enters his sixth season as Western Michigan’s head coach in 2022.

Eric Evans has served as the Broncos’ co-offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2017. He calls plays for Western Michigan during games.

Evans came to Western Michigan after serving as Dayton’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2014-16.

He was UAB’s running backs coach in 2013, reuniting with head coach Garrick McGee. McGee was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Northwestern from 2006-07, while Evans was a graduate assistant working with quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends for the Wildcats.

Trio of Oklahoma quarterbacks coaching in Tennessee-Florida rivalry

A trio of Oklahoma quarterbacks are coaching in the Tennessee-Florida rivalry game.

No. 12 Florida (2-1) will host Tennessee (2-1) Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Kickoff between the Vols and Gators is slated for 7 p.m. EDT. ESPN will televise the Southeastern Conference matchup.

Josh Heupel is in his first season as the Vols’ head coach. Heupel played collegiately at Oklahoma from 1999-2000. He guided the Sooners to the 2000 BCS national championship.

Heupel completed 615-of-972 passes for 7,066 yards, 50 touchdowns and 30 interceptions with Oklahoma. He rushed for 69 yards and 12 touchdowns on 130 attempts.

Joey Halzle is serving as Heupel’s quarterbacks coach at Tennessee.

Halzle also played quarterback at Oklahoma from 2006-08, completing 53-of-83 passes for 640 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

McGee played quarterback at Oklahoma from 1994-95. McGee completed 195-of-377 passes, totaling 2,449 yards, 11 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with the Sooners.

Florida to promote offensive analyst Garrick McGee replacing Brian Johnson

Previously an off the field analyst, McGee will likely replace departing offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson.

Not even 24 hours after Florida offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Brian Johnson left to coach quarterbacks for the Philadelphia Eagles, it appears coach Dan Mullen has already made a hire.

He will be promoting off-field analyst Garrick McGee to an on-field assistant role. Though this role hasn’t been announced, it’s assumed that he will be the quarterbacks coach.

McGee has both offensive coordinator and head coach experience. Prior to joining Florida’s staff this season, he was the wide receivers coach at Missouri in 2019. He was the offensive coordinator at Arkansas from 2010-11, coaching Ryan Mallett under Bobby Petrino.

He also had coordinator stints at Illinois, Northwestern and Louisville, coaching Heisman winner Lamar Jackson at the latter. He was the head coach at UAB from 2012-13, compiling a 5-19 record.

With the hires of assistant coaches Wesley McGriff and Jules Montinar, the promotion of McGee completes Florida’s staff. It’s unclear who will take over the offensive coordinator role, but it has been speculated that John Hevesy and/or Billy Gonzalez could return to their co-offensive coordinator roles.
