Former Alabama LB preparing for NFL comeback, earns tryout with the Seahawks

Former Alabama LB Reuben Foster worked out for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Alabama football fans all remember [autotag]Reuben Foster[/autotag] for his tenacity on the football field. The first glimpse that fans caught of Foster was against LSU in Death Valley. The Tide kicked off to the Tigers, and Foster came out of nowhere to blindside one of the nation’s top running backs at the time, Leonard Fournette. After that, everyone knew the type of player that he was going to be.

Foster would go on to spend four seasons in Tuscaloosa. He would accumulate an astounding 223 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. During his senior season, he won the Butkus Award and was a unanimous first-team All-American. He would leave Alabama as one of the best linebackers to ever play in Bryant-Denny Stadium. After his senior season, he was drafted with the No. 31 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers.

He would spend two seasons in California before being released for off-the-field issues. In the two seasons that he was in San Francisco, he recorded 84 tackles in 16 games. Soon after, he was signed by Washington. During his first practice with the team, Foster tore his ACL landing him on the injured reserve list. He didn’t see the field in Washington in his three seasons with the team.

Now, he is looking to make a comeback. On Sunday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted that Foster was set to have a workout with the Seattle Seahawks.

Previously, Foster worked out for the Miami Dolphins in May. The Seahawks have had several elite linebackers in the past like Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright. If Foster is signed by the organization, it will be interesting to see how he develops in Seattle. After all, he hasn’t played since 2018. Alabama fans would love to see a former fan favorite on the gridiron again.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Foster’s professional career as well as other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Seahawks working out former 49ers LB Reuben Foster today

The Seahawks are working out former 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster today, according to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network.

The Seahawks are working out former 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster today, according to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network.

Foster played his college football at Alabama and was a first-round pick by San Francisco in the 2017 NFL draft. He appeared in 10 games his rookie year and then six more the following season before a major knee injury cut his career short. Foster suffered tears to his ACL, MCL and LCL joints.

The Commanders claimed Foster off waivers later that year but he was back on their injured reserve list a few months later. He has not appeared in a game since the 2018 season.

Foster will have to compete for one of the team’s remaining off-ball linebacker spots. Seattle is a bit short at this position right now with Jon Rhattigan on the PUP list and Ben Burr-Kirven on IR with the knee injury he suffered last preseason.

Former Alabama LB Reuben Foster lands workout with Miami Dolphins

Could the former first-round pick soon be back in the league?

Former Alabama star linebacker [autotag]Reuben Foster[/autotag] last appeared on a roster for the then-Washington Football Team in 2020. Following Injuries that sidelined him, Foster was released by Washington before playing an in-game snap for the franchise and has not played since. Yesterday, Foster reportedly worked out with a team familiar with former Crimson Tide players, the Miami Dolphins.

The news was first reported by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald

Foster was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft.

The 49ers decided to release Foster in the middle of the 2018 season following arrests and a subsequent suspension by the NFL.

He played two seasons with the 49ers, where he tallied a total of 101 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits and two passes defended in only 16 games.

Though he has not been on the field for a regular season game since 2018, Foster seems to have stayed in shape and is ready to make a comeback.

New Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has seen Foster play first-hand, as the two shared time within the 49ers organization – McDaniel’s latest stop before becoming the Dolphins’ coach.

Linebacker is a need for the Dolphins and Foster is looking for a comeback, the two parties could help each other out.

Miami is no stranger to having former Alabama players on the roster. In back-to-back drafts over the last two years, the Dolphins selected their starting quarterback [autotag]Tua Tagovailoa[/autotag] and star wide receiver [autotag]Jaylen Waddle[/autotag]. They also selected defensive tackle [autotag]Raekwon Davis[/autotag] in 2020.

As of right now, there has not been an offer made to Foster. He did, however, post to his Instagram stating that he felt support coming from the Miami fanbase.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Reuben Foster as he looks to return to the football field by the 2022 NFL season.

Chris Grier has more decisions to make this offseason

Extensions, signings and draft picks are on the horizon.

Chris Grier and the Miami Dolphins front office continue to grind it out and fill the 2022 roster for Mike McDaniel and staff. Veteran punter, Thomas Morstead was signed on Friday to a one-year deal that closes the book on two things – the Michael Palardy era and the fanbase’s hope of Miami drafting collegiate “Punt God,” Matt Araiza.

In addition to Morstead, the Dolphins may be addressing the linebacker need by working out Reuben Foster. While it’s unclear whether or not the Dolphins will sign the former Alabama star, this could be a no-risk, high-reward move.

At this point, after the DeVante Parker trade to the New England Patriots and the Xavien Howard contract restructure, Miami has roughly $20 million in space. This leaves a multitude of options for Grier and could help in all facets of the rest of the offseason.

Veterans can still be signed, and with a light draft class following the Tyreek Hill trade, the cap is set up nicely for future business within the roster.

What does that business look like?

Defensive linemen Christian Wilkins could not only have his rookie contract picked up for the fifth year but he could be signed long-term as well. Andrew Van Ginkel is in a contract year, and while the restricted free agent tender was placed on cornerback Nik Needham last month, his future in Miami is a multi-year deal away, which could very well be in the cards with the pot of chips Grier still has at his disposal.

Being a few weeks from the NFL Draft, it’s hard to believe Grier is finished on the transaction side of things. With the punter gap now filled by Morstead, there truly are a limited number of holes on this team.

Depth is always something any football team needs, and with the Dolphins having a bit of a wait until they’re scheduled to make a pick in the upcoming draft, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Grier dip into the stack of checks. He very well could move up should he see a blue-chip player he covets, while, in typical Grier fashion, not breaking the bank in the process.

At this point, he’s earned the trust.

Report: Dolphins working out LB Reuben Foster

He hasn’t played a game since 2018.

What the Miami Dolphins have done on defense this offseason has been pretty impressive. They’ve addressed their two biggest questions by re-signing Emmanuel Ogbah and restructuring/extending Xavien Howard’s contract to keep them happy.

On top of those moves, they’ve brought back most of their free agents on that side of the ball, including nearly all of their linebackers. With that being said, they should still be looking to add more.

According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins are working out former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster. While that name would’ve caused a much bigger stir a few years back, now, it’s not as impactful.

Foster, 27, was the No. 31 pick of the 2017 draft, as he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers. There, he overlapped with Mike McDaniel and Jon Embree.

In his first season with the 49ers, he started only 10 games due to an ankle injury, recording 72 total tackles and five quarterback hits. He looked like he could’ve been a solid starter in this league if he could stay healthy. However, in 2018, after numerous legal issues, including domestic violence charges that were eventually dropped, he was released by San Francisco.

He was claimed by Washington but didn’t play during the rest of the 2018 season, and, in his first practice of 2019, he tore his ACL. This cost him the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

In 2021, Foster worked out for multiple teams but was never signed.

At this point, signing Foster would be a lottery ticket, on the field. If Miami brought him in on a minimum deal with no guaranteed money they could see how the summer and training camp goes without much risk. If it doesn’t work, they can just cut him and move on.

LB Reuben Foster working out for Browns

While the team is working him out tomorrow, Foster’s history is checkered:

While the Cleveland Browns revamped their defense this offseason, it wasn’t enough to stop the Kansas City Chiefs. Then again, it is really hard to stop the Chiefs with the mistakes made by the offense and special teams. Even a near-perfect game could have been good enough to get the victory in Week 1.

With Week 2 looming, the team continues to look for upgrades to the defense. Today that included bringing in a former first-round pick at the linebacker spot. With Anthony Walker and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah joining that position group, many are surprised the team would look to add another player.

In Reuben Foster, the Browns worked out a talented player but far from just “another player.” First, the initial report on the Foster workout:

Second, it is important to note what has led Foster to be out of the NFL for some time. Foster has had numerous legal issues including two charges of domestic violence (later dismissed) and charges related to a weapon and marijuana possession. The NFL suspended him for two games under the substance abuse policy.

Foster was waived by the San Fransisco 49ers in 2018 but claimed by the Washington Football Team. The linebacker then tore his ACL, among other injuries, for Washington in 2019.

Third, since being drafted in 2017, Foster has only played in 16 games, ten as a rookie and then six before being waived in 2018. He compiled 101 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits and two pass deflections during that time.

After the success of Malik McDowell, who had a similarly troubled past and injury concerns, and extending the contract of Kareem Hunt, general manager Andrew Berry has shown a willingness to take low-cost risks if he feels the player has changed his ways.

Foster has mostly stayed out of the spotlight over the past few years but started working out for NFL teams recently. It is possible that Cleveland looks to sign him after the workout or could wait until after Week 2 concludes, if interested, while Foster could continue his workout rounds around the league.

Jags worked out veteran LB Reuben Foster

In addition to looking into Duke Johnson (who they signed) the Jags also brought in former first-round linebacker Reuben Foster for a work out Monday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a busy Monday as they continued their preparations for the regular season. Not only did they sign running back Duke Johnson to their practice squad, but they also worked out veteran linebacker and former first-round selection Reuben Foster.

Foster, who was selected 31st overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, started 16 games for Kyle Shanahan and company in his first two seasons and was able to accumulate 101 tackles for them. However, they waived him in his second season due to various legal incidents.

The first incident occurred in early 2018 after Foster was arrested in Alabama for marijuana possession. Almost a month later, he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence charges and charges for threats and possession of an assault weapon.

Then later in April, the then second-year player was charged with various counts of domestic violence in regards to the April incident. Those charges were connected to claims by his girlfriend that he inflicted bodily harm to her and tried to forcefully prevent her from reporting a crime. The assault weapons charge was also connected to this incident. However, later that month, Foster’s girlfriend told her attorney that her story was fabricated and that her injuries came from a fight with another woman.

In November of 2018, Foster was arrested for suspicion of domestic violence in Tampa. This was the final charge that led to him being waived by the 49ers, although those charges were eventually dropped in January of 2019. Since that moment, the veteran player hasn’t had any other run-ins with the law.

The Washington Football Team claimed Foster off waivers when the 49ers cut ties with him, but he wasn’t able to return to the field for them after suffering a torn ACL and LCL in May of 2019. That said, it appears any team that wants to take a chance on Foster will have to heavily evaluate his medical history and they will also look into his history with the law although his major incidents were dismissed.

The Jags depth at interior linebacker seems fine at the moment with Shaq Quarterman, Chapelle Russell, and Dakota Allen all behind starters Myles Jack and Damien Wilson, but maybe the Jags wanted to see if Foster looked like the explosive player he was as a rookie. That said, his name might be one to keep in mind for Jacksonville in the coming weeks.

Former Washington linebacker Reuben Foster worked out with the New York Jets on Thursday

Reuben Foster spent over two years on Washington’s roster and never played in one game.

The Washington Football Team claimed former first-round pick Reuben Foster off waivers on Nov. 27, 2018.

Foster was on Washington’s roster until the end of the 2020 season. However, Foster never played a game for Washington.

On Thursday, the 27-year-old Foster worked out for the New York Jets.

Foster, a first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, was released late in the 2018 season after being arrested on a domestic violence charge. Ex-Washington president Bruce Allen took considerable heat for claiming Foster off waivers at the time.

However, the charges were later dropped against Foster, and he was looking to continue his NFL career for Washington in 2019. He wouldn’t get that chance as Foster suffered a devastating knee injury in OTAs that spring and would spend the next two seasons on injured reserve.

Washington opted not to bring Foster back in 2021, and he was suddenly a free agent.

After New York’s practice on Thursday, head coach Robert Saleh was asked about bringing Foster in for a workout.

It’s unclear how the workout went for Foster, or if the Jets plan to sign him at this time.

Former 49ers LB Reuben Foster working out for Jets

The Jets are looking at Reuben Foster. The ex-49er has been arrested for domestic violence in the past & hasn’t played since 2018 due to knee surgery.

The Jets are working out Reuben Foster on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The 31st overall pick by the 49ers in 2017 – the first year Robert Saleh coached in San Francisco – Foster only played in 16 games over two seasons from 2017-2018. The linebacker was suspended, faced legal trouble and dealt with a serious injury.

Foster received a two-game suspension in 2018 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy over a weapons offense and a misdemeanor drug offense. The 49ers released him on Nov. 25, 2018, after his second suspicion of domestic violence arrest in one year.

Foster’s first suspicion of domestic violence arrest came on Feb. 11, 2018, following an incident with his girlfriend. The woman eventually recanted her original accusations. Foster was arrested again on domestic violence suspicion nine months later on Nov. 24, 2018, which prompted the 49ers to release him immediately.

The Washington Football team claimed Foster three days after his arrest despite the NFL putting him on the commissioner’s exempt list. Charges were eventually dropped by the State Attorney’s Office in Florida in January 2019. Foster was taken off the commissioner’s exempt list in April.

Foster never suited up for Washington, though. He tore his ACL during his first practice with the team and missed the rest of the 2019 season. Foster didn’t play in 2020, either, while he continued to rehab from his knee injury and the subsequent surgery.

He has totaled just 101 tackles in 890 snaps over two seasons.

Former Alabama LB Reuben Foster looks to make NFL comeback

Reuben Foster is back training on the field and is looking for an opportunity.

Former Alabama football star linebacker Reuben Foster has had a difficult time in the NFL. He’s been riddled with injuries and off-the-field issues that have kept him from playing.

He was drafted in 2017 by the San Francisco 49er’s but was released after the 2018 season due to allegations off the field and then picked up by Washington, where he got injured in one of his first practices with the team.

His agent, Malki Kawa recently posted a video to Twitter showing Foster training on a field, showing that he’s ready to get back into the game and sign with a team.

Foster is a free agent, and with the season quickly approaching, is looking for an opportunity.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Reuben Foster as he looks to find his way back onto an NFL team roster for the 2021 season.
