Detroit Lions GM explains selecting RB Jahmyr Gibbs No. 12 overall

The Detroit Lions selected Jahmyr Gibbs a lot earlier than expected, but the GM strongly defends the move.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was expected to be the second running back off the board in the first round. While that was the case, no one expects Gibbs to be selected within the first 15 picks of the draft.

Gibbs was drafted by the Detroit Lions at No. 12 overall, following a series of trades that took place inside the top 10.

While Gibbs is an immediate starter for the franchise that will boost the Detroit offense, most believed that he would be available later on in the first round. The decision to draft him earlier than expected angered some fans and puzzled many.

The General Manager for the Lions, Brad Holmes, hosted a press conference last night where he defended the pick.

He explains that his motto has always been to draft guys that are the right fit for the team at the time. He mentions that he first saw Gibbs in action when he attended the Alabama vs. Texas matchup early on in the 2022 college football season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gibbs and other former Alabama players beginning their professional careers in the NFL.

Mixed reactions from fans on Jahmyr Gibbs selected No. 12 to Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions shocked the NFL by selecting Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 12 and fans aren’t sure how to feel about it.

The Detroit Lions left football fans scratching their heads after selecting former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs No. 12 overall in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Gibbs was the second running back selected in the first round, which many expected. However, what caught fans and analysts by surprise is how early he was picked.

Most mock drafts projected Gibbs to be selected in the late 20s, some even had him in the early part of the second round. Instead, Gibbs is drafted in the top-15 picks.

Fans of the Lions and football fans in general quickly took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Gibbs at No. 12.

WATCH: Jahmyr Gibbs talks about his time at Alabama

Jahmyr Gibbs could be a first-round pick after just one season at Alabama, he talks about his time with Saban and the Tide.

Former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs spent only one season with the Crimson Tide after transferring in from Georgia Tech during the 2022 offseason. His impact on the offense was huge and he is now a potential first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Gibbs led the team in rushing with 926 yards and seven touchdowns on 151 attempts. He also had a team-high 44 receptions for 444 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

He is now projected to be the second running back selected in the draft, after Texas‘ Bijan Robinson. Though many running backs aren’t selected in the first round nowadays, Gibbs is projected to land in the latter half of Day 1.

In a recent interview with NFL Network’s Good Morning Football, Gibbs spoke about his time at Alabama, what he learned from head coach Nick Saban and what No. 1 on his jersey means to him.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gibbs and other former Alabama players preparing to begin their professional careers in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins may be interested in trading up for Jahmyr Gibbs

Peter King of ProFootball talk claims the Miami Dolphins may be interested in trading up for the Alabama RB.

The Miami Dolphins front office has done its best to put together a Super Bowl-contending team in Miami Gardens. It has also not been shy when it comes to drafting former Alabama players. On Thursday, the franchise could better the team while adding another member of the Crimson Tide.

Jahmyr Gibbs may have only been at Alabama for one season after transferring in for Georgia Tech, but his impact on Bill O’Brien’s pro-style offense was great.

He ran for 926 yards and seven touchdowns, while also reeling in a team-high 44 receptions for 444 yards and three touchdowns.

Peter King of Pro Football Talk revealed that the Dolphins could try to trade up into the first round to select Gibbs.

“The Dolphins don’t pick till 51st overall, but if there was some way to climb into the twenties to nab explosive back Jahmyr Gibbs, coach Mike McDaniel would love to do it,” writes King.

If this does happen, Gibbs would join an offense headlined by former Alabama stars Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle.

There’s no telling what the Dolphins will do on Thursday, but the general expectation is that they aren’t involved in the first-round festivities.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gibbs and other former Alabama players preparing for the 2023 NFL draft.

Buffalo Bills could double down on Alabama RBs in 2023 NFL draft

In a recent mock draft, the Buffalo Bills select Jahmyr Gibbs. This would make for an all-Alabama backfield.

Jahmyr Gibbs may have only spent one season as a member of the Crimson Tide, but his impact on the offense will be something fans remember for a very long time. Gibbs was the leading rusher for the Alabama offense and also led the team in receptions. His versatility and ability to excel as a ball carrier or pass catcher will make him a successful player in the NFL.

With the 2023 NFL draft just days away, mock drafts are beginning to get a clearer picture as to who will be drafted where.

In the latest mock done by Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire, Gibbs is off the board at pick No. 27 to the Buffalo Bills.

“Our second running back comes off the board to the Buffalo Bills, who are looking to give Josh Allen some help on offense. He provides an impact in three phases of the game as a returner, runner, and receiver out of the backfield.”

What makes this pick interesting is that the Bills recently signed a running back in free agency. Damien Harris made the intra-division move from New England to Buffalo. Harris, like Gibbs, was drafted out of Alabama.

The running game has been a big thorn in the side of a very talented offense in Buffalo. Harris is a strong back that can easily work his way into the end zone or to the first down marker.

Gibbs would be a perfect pairing with Harris, as he is an agile speed back that can also run routes and catch passes out of the backfield, a safe, last-resort option for Josh Allen if you will.

There’s no telling what Buffalo will do with the pick come Thursday, April 27, when the 2023 NFL draft gets underway.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gibbs and other former Alabama players as draft day approaches.

NFL analyst: Jahmyr Gibbs deserves to be drafted in the first round

Jahmyr Gibbs may not be drafted in the first round, but he deserves to be, argues one NFL analyst.

Jahmyr Gibbs spent only one season at Alabama after transferring in from Georgia Tech ahead of the 2022 season. His impact on the Crimson Tide offense was immense and he has worked his way into being a potential first-round pick.

The 2023 NFL draft is set to begin in less than a week, and multiple former Crimson Tide stars are expected to hear their names called. However, others will have to wait for the second or third day for their NFL careers to begin.

Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network recently argued Gibbs shouldn’t have to wait. He deserves to be selected in the first round.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gibbs and other former Alabama players preparing for the 2023 NFL draft.

Perfect mid/late-round RB fits for the Eagles in 2023 NFL draft

We’re looking at the perfect mid/late-round running back fits for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 NFL draft

The Eagles will look somewhat different at running back in 2023, with Rashaad Penny replacing former Penn State star Miles Sanders.

Penny, Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott, and Trey Sermon give Philadelphia the potential for a solid committee of rushers. However, could Howie Roseman look to find the perfect fit during this month’s draft?

The Eagles have eyes for Bijan Robinson and Jahymr Gibbs, but we have the perfect fits if GM Howie Roseman decides to move in the mid to late rounds.

Breaking down Eagles picks in seven-round mock draft from ESPN’s Jordan Reid

We’re breaking down the latest seven-round 2023 NFL mock draft from ESPN’s Jason Reid that landed Philadelphia Nolan Smith and three other defenders

The 2023 NFL draft is fast approaching, and as all 32 teams across the league increase their focus, scouts within the organization are doing their due diligence on all prospects.

Thanks to some draft night wizardry from Howie Roseman, the Eagles traded the No. 16 overall pick, No. 19 overall pick, and a 2022 sixth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the No. 18 overall pick, a 2022 third-round pick, a 2022 seventh-round pick, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick.

Philadelphia has a Super Bowl-caliber offense and needs to reload on defense.

ESPN’s Jason Reid released his latest seven-round mock draft, and we break down all six picks.

Jahmyr Gibbs falls to second round, lands with Miami Dolphins in latest mock

In the latest ESPN 2023 NFL mock draft, Jahmyr Gibbs falls out of the first round, but lands with a team in need of a RB

Former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs only spent one season with the Crimson Tide after transferring in from Georgia Tech, but his impact was greatly felt. Now, his sights are set on beginning his professional career. The first step is being selected in the 2023 NFL draft.

Texas‘ Bijan Robinson is expected to be the first running back off the board, but Gibbs is a close RB2.

Jordan Reid of ESPN recently revealed his latest 2023 NFL mock draft and Gibbs slides out of the first round and well into the second. He’s ultimately selected by the Miami Dolphins with pick No. 51.

“Gibbs could be drafted well before this spot, but running backs are tricky to project. He’d be an ideal fit in coach Mike McDaniel’s outside zone scheme, though. Adding Gibbs to an offense with wideouts Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle would be even more explosive. Gibbs averaged 6.1 yards per carry for the Crimson Tide last season; he also caught 44 passes.”

The Dolphins re-signed the 2022 contributing cast and currently have Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson. Fans, however, were expecting the front office to sign a headline-worthy name to serve as the team’s reliable ball carrier. Instead, it’s looking like Miami will try to go through the draft rather than free agency.

Gibbs was Alabama’s leading rusher and receiver in 2022. Such a versatile player would bode well in Mike McDaniel’s unique offensive scheme.

This may end up being the best possible landing spot for Gibbs, but there would have to be 50 players selected before him in order for the Dolphins to have the opportunity to pick him up.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gibbs and other former Alabama layers preparing for the 2023 NFL draft.

Top 5 landing spots for RB Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023 NFL draft

Best fits for Jahmyr Gibbs style in the NFL

Despite spending only one season in Tuscaloosa, Jahmyr Gibbs solidified himself as one of the most well-rounded running backs in the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program. Gibbs was not only the Tide’s leading rusher on the ground in 2022, but he also led the offense in receptions.

In recent years, the NFL game has transitioned to more RPO style and getting the ball out of the quarterback’s hands quickly. The premise is to get athletes the ball in space and let them do their work, which is exactly what Gibbs does.

He is a great safety valve for a quarterback under pressure because of his great hands and shiftiness in the open field. His ability to pick up the Alabama offensive scheme in only one year tells teams everything they need to know about his football knowledge as well.

It is pretty rare that running backs are selected in the first round of the NFL draft anymore, but Gibbs has been repeatedly projected in mock drafts as a first-round running back. Here are the top-five locations for Gibbs to land in the draft.
