Eagles roster: Predicting the 16-man practice squad for 2021 as the roster cutdown deadline approaches

The Eagles are a little over 24-hours away from having to cut their roster down to 53 players before the 4:00 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.

Following the final round of cuts, GM Howie Roseman will start the process of assembling his 16-player practice squad, which can now include up to six players with more than two accrued seasons.

Here’s our prediction for the Eagles practice squad ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

For the final time during the 2020 NFL season, the Eagles have protected four practice squad players in advance of Sunday’s matchup against Washington.

Smith originally signed with the Bears following the 2020 NFL Draft and was cut at the end of Training Camp. Smith was eventually signed to the Cowboys’ active roster. He did not appear in a game before he was waived on October 26 and signed to the Eagles practice squad shortly after.

Jordan Howard was called up for the Week 13 matchup with the Packers and racked up 19 yards on four carries. Rashad Smith played seven special team’s snaps against the Saints, while Prince Tega Wanogho, a 2020 sixth-round pick, has yet to see action this season.

Hakeem Butler is back in Philadelphia, signing to the Eagles practice squad along with free-agent linebacker Rashad Smith. Philadelphia waived WR Marcus Green and LB Dante Olson in the process.

With Dallas Goedert and Jalen Reagor returning to the roster, Butler was the odd man out and will be remembered most for his failed attempt at a fade route with the Eagles trailing the Giants 14-10.

The Eagles are on a bye week but the franchise made a roster move on Monday, signing free-agent linebacker Rashad Smith to the team’s practice squad per the NFL’s Transaction wire. Dante Olson was subsequently released off the practice squad in a subsequent move.

Smith was previously signed by the Dallas Cowboys off of the Bears practice squad before being released last week and working out with for the Eagles last week.

As a senior in 2019 at Florida Atlantic, he appeared in 14 games, posting 109 tackles (11.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, 4 quarterback hurries, 3 interceptions, 2 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and 5 fumble recoveries (led the nation). Smith posted an 11 tackle and one fumble recovery performance against Ohio State.

Smith was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears after the 2020 NFL Draft and waived during the team’s final cuts.

Roster Churn: Cowboys look for buttery blend after injuries creamed Week 1 chances

The Cowboys saw 3 players go on the IR and brought in four new faces.

It’s bad enough the Dallas Cowboys suffered a tough 20-17 loss in the season-opener vs the Los Angeles Rams but they also got hit with a plethora of injuries. Tight end Blake Jarwin suffered a torn ACL, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch broke his collarbone, and backup offensive tackle Cam Erving sprained his MCL.

With all three heading to injured reserve, this created spots on the Cowboys 53-man roster. The first spot was filled by veteran defensive back Brandon Carr. The team then filled two of those holes with outside resources, signing linebacker Rashad Smith and offensive tackle Alex Light from the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals practice squads.

Carr rejoined the team just before the season-opener and was in uniform Week 1 after being promoted from the practice squad but never saw the field. Now that he’s on the active roster, his role should increase to the point where he could challenge current starter Darian Thompson to play opposite Xavier Woods.

Smith, an undrafted free agent out of Florida Atlantic, adds depth to fellow linebackers Joe Thomas and Luke Gifford who look to not only step up in Vander Esch’s absent but now Sean Lee, who is headed to injured reserve and will be out for six weeks after having sports hernia surgery.

Light, also an undrafted free agent, played for the Green Bay Packers for his first two seasons in the NFL. However, he only played in 16 games with no starts. He was waived by the Packers on September 5 and signed to their practice a day later, only to be released on September 10. On September 14 he was signed to the Arizona Cardinals practice squad before signing with the Cowboys a day later.

The Cowboys are thin at tackle with La’el Collins and Erving on injured reserve. Light gives them depth behind Terence Steele who started Week 1 opposite veteran Tyron Smith.

With injuries galore, the Cowboys have done some nice patchwork to fill out the roster as they look for their first victory of 2020 vs the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.

In addition, the Cowboys backfilled their practice squad with corner Rashard Robinson and strong safety Steven Parker.

Rashad Smith, Jamon Brown signed off Bears’ practice squad

While there are some new wrinkles when it comes to the practice squad in 2020, there are some rules that remain the same.

While there are some new wrinkles when it comes to the practice squad in 2020, there are some rules that remain the same.

One of those is that players — aside from the four players that are protected on a weekly basis this season — are allowed to be signed off practice squads and placed on another team’s 53-man roster.

The Chicago Bears just lost two of their practice squad players. The Dallas Cowboys have signed undrafted rookie inside linebacker Rashad Smith, and the Philadelphia Eagles have signed offensive guard Jamon Brown to their respective active rosters.

The Cowboys decided against promoting linebacker Francis Bernard from their practice squad and signed Smith instead. Meanwhile, the Eagles added depth on the offensive line in bringing in Brown.

Earlier this week, the Bears released defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson and re-signed Khalil Mack’s younger brother Ledarius Mack to the practice squad in his place.

The Bears now have two available spots on their practice squad to fill.
