Eagles first-round rookie CB Quinyon Mitchell has locked down the competition through his first six NFL games

It was a bit of a surprise during the 2024 NFL Draft when Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell fell all the way down to the 22nd overall pick to the Philadelphia Eagles as he was projected to go as high as within the first 10 picks. So far however it has been a match made in heaven for Mitchell and the Eagles as the rookie has been one of the top rated corners within the league.

Through Mitchell’s first 6 games of the season he has been impressive, shutting down top receivers–including fellow rookie star Malik Nabers. Quarterbacks have thrown Mitchell’s way 29 times but he has only allowed 14 completions for just 197 yards through the air. When targeting Mitchell, quarterbacks on the season average an abysmal 70.6 rating and have yet to find a touchdown against him.

Mitchell has played a large part in the secondary resurgence in Philadelphia and has quickly established himself as one of, if not the best defensive back on the team. Mitchell’s physical play style, length, and instincts are going to serve him well as he develops further and it’s scary to think what he could become behind a ferocious Eagles’ defensive line.

Jalen Hurts was sacked six times on the afternoon, and the star quarterback committed another turnover (fumble), as Philadelphia could not sustain any offensive consistency without the big three in the lineup.

Saquon Barkley had ten carries for 84 yards (8.4 avg). Still, with the Eagles playing from behind all afternoon, the running back was unable to get the Philadelphia offense over the hump against a motivated Tampa defense.

An Eagles defense that shut New Orleans down in Week 3 was gashed to 445 total yards for the Buccaneers offense, including 111 rushing yards and a twelve-minute advantage in time of possession.

Baker Mayfield was on fire early, and even after an inefficient second half, he still was 30-40 passing for 347 yards, two touchdowns, and a 100.2 rating.

Philadelphia (2-2) will now have a week off, during which questions about Sirianni’s job security and the Eagles’ playoff hopes will dominate the airwaves.

Not including the New England Patriots who have played three games, the Philadelphia Eagles have allowed the fifth most passing yards in the NFL.

If you boil down those yards strictly to catches made by receivers, the Eagles allow the third most yards wide receivers despite having Darius Slay and Quinyon Mitchell at cornerback.

For Shaheed, this could mean more of the same. He’s been Derek Carr’s favorite target and team leader in yards against both the Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers. A large percentage of of his yardage came on the touchdown in this game. You could see him receive more targets and become more involved beyond the deep shot.

Olave still feels like he hasn’t been completely unlocked. He was more productive in the second game. His 81 receiving yards is solid, but it still feels like there’s another level. This could be completely be because the Saints are putting up so many points that it feels like your top receiver should be putting up monster numbers.

This could be the game where Olave goes over the century mark, or gets into the touchdown. If the Saints really feel dangerous, Olave may achieve both for the first time this week.

With the second half set to begin, here are takeaways and observations from the first half.

Primarily a punt returner, Covey joined DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson for the second snap, lined up as an outside receiver. Covey had two catches in the first half, for six yards on two targets.

Monday saw a matchup of two similar running backs with the veteran Saquon Barkley, and second year running back Bijan Robinson. Through two quarters, Robinson has the lead. The Falcons star has 10 carries for 72 yards, and one catch for 72 yards. Barkley has eight carries for 37 yards rushing in the first half.

Whether it was a punishment or by some design, Eagles star defensive tackle Jalen Carter didn’t see a snap in the game’s first series. He was back in the lineup for the second series. CArter finished the first half with one tackle.

At this rate the Eagles best offensive play is Jalen Hurts running. Hurts has 47 yards rushing on the Eagles final drive of the half. Hurts was 9-13 passing for 70 yards and one touchdown. He had six carries for 51 yards rushing.

Smith was going to be the focal point of the Eagles offense with A.J. Brown out and the Heisman Trophy winner rose to the occasion. Smith had three catches for 30 yards and a touchdown on the Eagles four possessions.
