What would an all-Alabama NFL defense look like?

Roll Tide Wire decided to dive in to see what an all-Alabama defense would look like in the NFL. Could they compete for a Super Bowl?

[jwplayer SLQwiHRi-er0jUifI]

There aren’t a lot of college football programs who could say they would be able to build an entire roster just based on former players who are currently playing in the NFL.

Alabama, on the other hand, would not only be able to field an entire roster, it’s team could compete for a playoff spot — and maybe even more. As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire decided to look at what the all-Alabama NFL team would look like.

The rules are simple: 1) the player has to currently be on an NFL roster and 2) it has to make sense from a roster management standpoint. For example, there’s no point in having seven running backs, which is how many Alabama has in the league, on the roster.

The last rule is that the number has to come out to 25 players on each side of the football. That, on top of the three specialists — kicker, punter and long-snapper, would add up 53 players, which is exactly the number that final NFL rosters come to.

Note: This is the all-Alabama NFL roster on the defensive side of the football. For the offensive roster, click here.

So, let’s get this all-Alabama NFL roster underway, shall we?

First up… defensive line

Watch: Jets’ lineman Quinnen Williams pushes SUV to stay in shape

New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams is working out by pushing an SUV.

The NFL just held its “virtual” draft and New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams has taken on a virtually impossible task to stay ready for the 2020 season. Gives a new meaning to “Roll Tide” for the former Alabama star.

Check out the 2019 No. 1 pick as he pushes an SUV for a workout.

The SUV seems a safer way to travel for the 6-foot-3, 303-pounder who found himself in trouble with the law in March. The No. 3 overall pick in 2019 was arrested on a weapons possession charge while trying to board a flight at La Guardia Airport.

The case has been delayed due to scaled-back court operations amid the coronavirus outbreak. Williams was scheduled to be arraigned March 25 on a desk appearance ticket, but the city has halted all non-urgent court proceedings due to the pandemic.

Instant Analysis: Jabari Zuniga should give Jets massive pass-rush boost

The Jets got a productive edge rusher in Florida defensive end Jabari Zuniga.

The Jets needed help rushing the passer, and Florida defensive Jabari Zuniga should deliver that to Gregg Williams’ defense from the edge.

The 6-foot-4, 246-pound Zuniga had three sacks in 2019 after missing all but five games due to an ankle injury. For his career, he tallied 18.5 sacks, 116 combined tackles and 33 tackles for a loss. He’s fast off the snap and can get the jump on a lineman before pouncing on the quarterback.

Zuniga is a great addition to the Jets’ defensive front because he can line up all over the line like the rest of the members of that unit. Though he typically lined up as a defensive end for the Gators, he can play in B-gap packages between the offensive guards and tackles and also outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. Gregg Williams should have a lot of fun shifting around Zuniga, 2019 first-round pick Quinnen Williams and the rest of the defensive line to confuse opposing offensive lineman.

The issue with Zuniga is his aggressiveness when engaged with blockers. He also appears predictable with his rushes at times. His usage might be capped early on with the Jets, especially considering the depth in front of him.

Expect Zuniga to play sparingly to start for the Jets but see time in certain sub-packages where he’ll easily win matchups. He’s incredibly athletic and productive, so the potential and opportunity is certainly there for Zuniga to excel for the Jets.

Breaking down the Tide’s 29 first-round NFL picks: Quinnen Williams

This time, we will be focusing on another former Alabama football star, Quinnen Williams .

Draft history shows using 3rd pick at DT is a bad decision

Even very good defensive tackles have a difficult time impacting the overall defensive success, and even less success impacting the win column

Derrick Brown is one of the primary potential targets for the Detroit Lions with the 3rd pick in next week’s NFL Draft. Nothing against the Auburn defensive tackle, but history says taking anyone at his position at that spot is a poor decision.

The No. 3 overall pick has been used four times on a defensive tackle since 2000. Two of the players selected even earned All-Pro berths on their rookie contracts, but it ultimately did not help their respective teams enough.

Quinnen Williams, 2019

Too early to evaluate the returns on Williams, the 3rd pick in 2019. The Jets tabbed Williams third overall and he was an instant starter. Williams bagged 2.5 sacks as a rookie after notching eight in his final season with the Crimson Tide.

Williams looks like a solid player after one season. But his impact on the Jets’ success was negligible. New York was 29th in 2018 in both scoring defense and yards allowed. In 2019 with Williams, they improved to 25th and 27th, respectively. The Jets improved from 4-12 to 7-9 but it came from the offense, which rocketed from 29th in scoring to 7th from 2018 to 2019.

Jets DE Quinnen Williams donates $25,000 in meals to medical professionals

Jets defensive end Quinnen Williams donated $25,000 worth of meals to medical professionals dealing with the coronavirus in New Jersey.

With the United States in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, NFL players and other athletes across the country have done their part to support medical professionals on the frontlines.

On Monday, Quinnen Williams became the latest to lend a helping hand.

New York’s second-year defensive lineman teamed up with private celebrity chef service Brianna’s Nutrition Kitchen to donate $25,000 worth of healthy meals to medical professionals dealing with the coronavirus in New Jersey, according to The Daily News. Williams also personalized his donations with a picture of himself and a brief blurb stating, “Thank you for your service. Love, Quinnen Williams — NY Jets.”

Williams is the second Jets player to make a major donation during the pandemic, joining new cornerback Pierre Desir, who donated more than 20,000 meals to struggling families in his hometown of St. Louis in March.

“For me, I understand that most of the kids in the poverty-stricken areas of St. Louis, the meals that they get at school are very important to them,” Desir said. “I just wanted to do my part. I reached out to the St. Louis Food Bank to see what I could do to help.”

It has been a rough offseason for Williams. The Alabama product was arrested at LaGuardia Airport for carrying a Glock 19 handgun without a New York license in his check-in bag last month and is awaiting a court date. Despite the self-inflicted turmoil he has endured this offseason, the 22-year-old found a way to help those in need.

Following a rookie season in which he was plagued by injuries, Williams is primed to take a major step forward in year two with the Jets. Regardless of whether or not that happens, though, it’s safe to assume he just earned himself some new supporters and the gratitude of those who received his donation.

Coronavirus pandemic delays Jets DT Quinnen Williams’ court date

Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will not appear on court to face a weapons charge on Wednesday as originally expected.

Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is going to have to wait a little bit longer to have his day in court.

With the coronavirus pandemic in full swing, Williams will not appear in court on Wednesday at Queens County Criminal Court as originally scheduled, according to NJ.com.

A Queens County Criminal Court spokesperson said the court is operating under adjusted guidelines in response to the pandemic. Cases for people currently in jail are being pushed back 30 days, while cases for people not currently in jail are being delayed 90 days. That means Williams is facing a late June court date at the earliest.

Williams was arrested on March 5 for illegally possessing a handgun at LaGuardia Airport. Gang Green’s second-year defensive lineman was carrying a Glock 19 handgun without a New York license in his check-in bag. The gun, registered in his home state of Alabama, was unloaded and Williams was not in possession of any ammunition.

According to reports citing Port Authority officials, Williams had the gun in his bag when he arrived at the Delta Airlines check-in counter. When the Delta employee responsible for Williams found out about the gun, a license check was made with the Port Authority police. Since Williams’ permit was valid in Alabama, but not New York, he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

The 22-year-old was scheduled to be formally charged during his first court appearance on Wednesday. Since he did not have ammunition on him when he was arrested, he cannot be charged with unlawfully possessing a loaded weapon — the same charge that sent former Giants and Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress to prison for 20 months following an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Manhattan nightclub in 2008.

The Jets selected Williams third overall out of Alabama in the 2019 NFL draft, making him the highest-drafted defensive player in franchise history. The defensive lineman’s rookie season wound up being somewhat of a disappointment, though, as he battled injuries and stretches of inconsistent play throughout 2019. In 13 games, Williams recorded only 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Williams is subject to punishment under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Quinnen Williams’ attorney expects gun charge to be ‘resolved shortly’

Quinnen Williams’ legal counsel expects a quick resolution to his weapons charge.

Quinnen Williams’ legal counsel is confident his handgun incident at LaGuardia Airport earlier this week will be resolved sooner rather than later.

Williams was arrested on Thursday night for carrying a Glock 19 handgun without a New York license in his check-in bag. The gun, registered in his home state of Alabama, was unloaded and Williams was not in possession of any ammunition.

On Friday, Williams’ attorney issued a statement regarding the incident and a possible timeout for its resolution.

“Mr. Williams respects and follows the law,” Alex Spiro said. “There was allegedly a technical issue with the manner in which the lawfully owned firearm was stored — and we expect the matter to be resolved shortly.”

According to reports citing Port Authority officials, Williams had the gun in his bag when he arrived at the Delta Airlines check-in counter. When the Delta employee responsible for Williams’ found out about the gun, a license check was made with the Port Authority police. Since Williams’ permit was valid in Alabama, but not New York, he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

The 21-year-old was processed, released and is scheduled for arraignment in Queens County Criminal Court on March 25, when he is to be formally charged.

The Jets also responded to Williams’ arrest on Friday, stating “We have been in contact with Quinnen Williams and are fully aware of the situation. We will have no additional comment as this is a pending legal manner.”

AFC East offseason: Jets’ Quinnen Williams arrested at airport

Buffalo Bills’ AFC East rival, New York Jets, DT Quinnen Williams arrested.

The New York Jets offseason is not off to a hot start. With free agency just around the corner, the team has to worry about their 2019 first-round pick, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

On Thursday evening, Williams was arrested LaGuardia Airport in New York, Jets Wire reports. Williams was charged with illegal possession of a handgun.

Williams was boarding a flight with a Glock 19 handgun when he was arrested. Williams had a permit for the gun in his home state of Alabama. It is illegal to carry a handgun in New York City without a city license.

Williams was the third-overall pick in last year’s draft and was on the only defensive tackle selected ahead of the Bills’ Ed Oliver at No. 9 overall.

The Jets acknowledged they were aware of the situation but had no further comment.

The 22-year-old’s arrest comes after an underwhelming rookie season.  In 13 games, Williams recorded only 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He battled injuries during the first pro season as well.
