Jets vs. Texans: Quincy Williams will need to mix it up with Joe Mixon

Jets vs. Texans: Quincy Williams will need to mix it up with Joe Mixon

Ranking No. 17 in opponent rush yards per game wasn’t the ideal plan for linebacker Quincy Williams and the New York Jets (2-6)  in 2024.

Still, Williams must help to nullify Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night in Week 9

Mixon had 102 yards on 25 carries versus the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but on a short week notice, he’ll be challenged by a physical Jets defense.

With linebacker C.J Mosley still a question mark, Williams is the man needed to make an impact on defense versus the run.

Williams had eight tackles in a 25-22 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 8, working a heavy load versus a total of 31 running plays. Williams and the defensive unit should expect a similar offensive attack from the Texans (6-2) who are without star wide receivers Stefon Diggs (knee) and Nico Collins (hamstring) on Thursday.

Expect Mixon and quarterback C.J Stroud to be highly operative in play-action. Williams must be able to diagnose the Houston offense pre-snap to be effective. If not, Stroud may shred the Jets with passing targets to tight end Dalton Schultz.

Ultimately, if Williams and the New York defense can force enough punts in a low scoring affair, they might be able to ride their home crowd into victory land to stop this never ending losing streak.

Week 7 matchups to watch: Najee Harris vs C.J. Mosley, Quincy Williams

Steelers’ RB Najee Harris versus NY Jets’ linebackers C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams is a matchup that will not disappoint in Week 7.

Pittsburgh faces a tough Week 7 defensive unit in the New York Jets.  A major component of what makes the New York Jets’ defense elite is their pair of do-it-all linebackers, C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams.  However, the Steelers offer one of the best rushing attacks in the league, showcased by Najee Harris’ amazing statistical production in Week 6.

Mosley and Williams make an unstoppable run-stopping and tackling machine for the New York Jets.  Both are playing at elite levels against the run in 2024, with the polarizing PFF giving these players grades of 75.4 for Mosley, and 75.6 for Williams.

Harris is coming off the best game of his 2024 campaign.  On a measly 14 carries, Harris produced an outstanding 104 yards of rushing and one touchdown. It would only be fair to the Steelers’ running back to compare his own elite PFF grade against the New York linebackers—an amazing 90.7 in Week 6.

Fans can look forward to Harris’ physical brand of football versus the run stopping abilities of Mosley and Williams in matchup that epitomizes the ‘unstoppable force’ meeting the ‘immovable object’, on October 20th, at 8:20 PM EST in Week 7.

Jets’ Quincy Williams has stern response to loss against the Vikings

Jets’ Quincy Williams has stern response to loss against the Vikings

No excuses came from the New York Jets defense following their loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.

The London clash ended 23-17 final in disappointing circumstances… for the offense. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ third and final interception sealed the defeat.

Linebacker Quincy Williams was quick to hold his team to a high standard after the final whistle.

“I’m going to be honest, people get tired of hearing the same [expletive],” Williams told SNY. “People got to take accountability.”

With such a stern response, it feels like Williams wasn’t exactly pointing fingers, but it would be understandable as to why he felt the way he did.

After allowing some early points, the New York’s defense slammed the door shut on a high-flying Vikings offense. Even so, the Jets’ offense could not close the gap.

In a bit of a separate way, cornerback Sauce Gardner was not in the mood to make any excuses either. He specifically spoke to penalties being called against the Jets.

“We did pretty good. Obviously, got quite a few calls, quite a few pass interferences, never called on us. It’s our job to play, the refs make calls. Ain’t nobody perfect,” Gardner said in the locker room. “I think we did a pretty good job.”

In the outing, Williams recovered a fumble to go along with the six tackles. Gardner had two tackles, a pass defended and a nearly an interception in the end zone. He was also flagged for a few penalties as he pointed out.

New York Jets’ LB Quincy Williams is the ultimate playmaker

New York Jets’ LB Quincy Williams is the ultimate playmaker

New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams leads his team in tackles and is the ultimate playmaker for defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

Williams will be a huge disruption to the Denver Broncos ground attack if their offensive line cannot climb to the second level on run plays. Also, the Broncos will want to avoid down and long distance situations, if not they’ll see Williams and safety Chuck Clark deployed in Ulbrich’s blitz scheme.

With linebacker C.J Mosley healing from a toe injury, Williams has taken a leadership role on defense. Williams’ impact has been contagious for teammate linebacker Jamien Sherwood who contributed four tackles in the teams week three victory.

Though criticized after their week 1 loss, Williams and the Jets’ defense have allowed just 1.3 touchdowns per game this season. The Broncos seemed to have found some success in the passing game in week 3, but Williams and the Jets’ defense is an entirely different monster.

Jets’ fans can expect exceptional efforts from Williams as long as he remains healthy. Hopefully his comrade Mosley will return from injury soon.

Sauce Gardner continues to stand on business in Jets’ 24-3 Patriots win

Sauce Gardner continues to stand on business in Jets’ 24-3 Patriots win

New York Jets defensive back Sauce Gardner intimidates opposing NFL quarterbacks by playing terrific man coverage. Gardner’s impact singlehandedly allows defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to blitz at will.

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett only attempted 18 passes versus the Jets and he didn’t target the wide receiver covered by Gardner often. Brissett’s reluctance, a factor influenced by Gardner, helped lead to sacks by Will McDonald IV, safety Chuck Clark, and Quinnen Williams.

Wide receivers are hardly ever open when Gardner is in coverage and quarterbacks simply aren’t willing to take the risk of throwing in his vicinity.

When Gardner isn’t in coverage, he’s mixing it up, preventing first-downs by making physical open-field tackles, another facet of his defensive prowess.

For Gardner, it isn’t always about making the highlight reel, but about making it difficult for the opposing offense to move the ball, and more importantly, getting off the field on third-downs.

Quincy Williams & CJ Mosley must cover TE George Kittle in Week 1: Jets vs. 49ers

The New York Jets will rely on LB Quincy Williams and CJ Mosley to slow down San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle in week 1.

The New York Jets will rely on linebackers Quincy Williams and CJ Mosley to slow down San Francisco 49ers tight-end George Kittle in week 1.

Williams and Mosley will need to work collaboratively to neutralize Kittle on intermediate and underneath pass routes. With the aid of defensive end Jermaine Johnson and a tenacious pass rush, the Jets should have success halting the 49ers pass attack.

At six-foot two-inches and 231-pounds, Mosley has the size needed to be physical with Kittle at the line of scrimmage.  Williams on the other hand, possesses agility and quickness. which can interchangeably agitate 49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Debo Samuel out of the backfield.

On paper, the Jets matchup exceptionally well with the 49ers. When Jets’ defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will opts for the blitz, it will be interesting to see if 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy remains composed and accurate.  The tenacity of the Jets defense may yield some crucial turnovers in this matchup.

Williams and Mosley will be key components if the Jets are to prevail on  Monday Night Football in week 1.

New York Jets DB Jarrick Bernard-Converse looks impressive

New York Jets DB Jerrick Bernard-Converse had an impressive showing in NFL Preseason Week 1.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jaylen Daniels and his reserves enjoyed challenging New York Jets defensive back Jarrick Bernard Converse this past weekend.

The Commanders likely thought they would have an offensive field day with the Jets’ reserves. Instead, Washington discovered that Jets’ defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has addition personnel to wreak havoc on opposing offenses this upcoming season.

Moreover, Bernard-Converse was actually lining up versus the Commanders No. 1 quarterback, and top wide receivers in their week 1 preseason match-up. Perhaps Bernard-Converse might occupy the No. 3 slot of the Jets’ defensive back depth chart this fall. If so, he may recieve more target throws with opposing quarterbacks fearful of Sauce Gardner and D.J Reed.

Fans should keep a close eye on Bernard-Congress throughout training camp, he may be destined to secure a spot as the slot corner in nickel personnel. Ultimately, Benrard-Converse showed a multifaceted skill set including closing-speed, open field tackling, and durability in NFL Preseason Week 1.

New York Jets DT Quinnen Williams may increase sack total in 2024

If the New York Jets are able establish scoring leads, DT Quinnen Williams may have more chances to let loose in the pass rush in 2024.

New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams totaled just 5.5 sacks last season. However, a dynamic change in the Jets’ offensive play style may lead to an increase in sack opportunities for Williams in 2024.

The Jets ranked No. 7 in the NFL with 48 sacks last season and Williams wasn’t even the reckoned force leading the team in such category. Defensive end Bryce Huff and linebacker Jermaine Johnson were the catalyst behind the Jets’ pass rush. Williams, often faced with a double team, has however been pivotal setting picks in defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s blitz scheme.

Moreover, with a third-down conversion rate of 25%, the Jets offense practically left its defense out on a limb last season. With an inability to sustain offensive drives, Williams’ and the Jets’ defense spent more time defending the run as last year, as opponents sought to salt games away and dictate time of possession.

Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will be intentional about fixing offensive woes and this may yield an increase in points per game for the Jets. Thus, ff the Jets are able to sustain scoring leads this season, this may force opponents into more passing situations, giving Williams a chance to let loose in the pass rush.

New York Jets All-Pro LB Quincy Williams is destined for greatness

New York Jets LB Quincy Williams ranked an impressive No. 5 in solo tackles with 95 through 17 games played last season.

New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams ranked an impressive No. 5 in solo tackles totaling 95 through 17 games played last season.

Williams has shown versatility in defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s system, operating as a run-stuffer, coverage guy, and pass-rusher.

The Jets finished near the bottom of the NFL in time of possession last season (No. 25), meaning Williams was forced to play a lot of snaps. 2023 was a test of Williams’ mental and physical endurance, yet he displayed a consistent tenacity every week.

The leadership of Jets head coach Robert Saleh and teammate linebacker C.J Mosley are solid points of reference for Williams’ and his increased intuitiveness. Williams’ instincts have been impactful versus the run, an asset to a Jets’ defense primed for a big season in 2024.

As Williams and the Jets’ defense condition under Ulbrich during training camp, they’ll get a fair share of quality reps against quarterback Aaron Rodgers, running back Breece Hall, and emerging rookie running back Braelon Allen.

Jets LB Quincy Williams explained why Brock Purdy is the NFL’s most unfairly criticized QB

He makes a good point.

When the San Francisco 49ers take the field on Sunday for Super Bowl 58 on Sunday in Las Vegas, they’ll be doing so with the first Mr. Irrelevant to ever start at quarterback in a Super Bowl. And with that, many still haven’t gotten on board with Brock Purdy as a legitimate star quarterback.

Purdy has undeniably heard the criticism of his performance this season despite spending months in the MVP race and leading the Niners to the NFC’s top seed.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

But that criticism isn’t echoed by one of the league’s best linebackers in Jets All-Pro Quincy Williams.

For The Win caught up with Williams at Radio Row in Las Vegas alongside running back Breece Hall (Purdy’s former Iowa State teammate) and explained why Purdy has been so unfairly criticized.

Williams said:

“Listen, the dude we’re gonna see on Sunday for the 49ers, man, I don’t care what y’all say: He’s clutch. He’s clutch. For real, though. I’ve seen quarterbacks with weapons around them that didn’t know how to use them. But you got a quarterback who — quote, unquote — everybody be like, ‘He’s average, he’s a game manager.’ But he’s getting the job done.”

It’s tough to argue those results.
