Report: 49ers showed interest in Jets’ Jeff Ulbrich for defensive coordinator position

The 49ers showed interest in Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich during their search for a new DC

Jeff Ulbrich isn’t leaving New York anytime soon. But for a quick moment, there was interest from a team in bringing him across the country.

According to Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers had some interest in Ulbrich, or were at least toying with the idea of bringing him in to replace Steve Wilks as their defensive coordinator.

Of course, if the 49ers wanted to go after Ulbrich, they would have needed permission from the Jets to talk to him. In all likelihood, the Jets would have blocked the 49ers from doing so, as teams can prevent such talks with other teams if the position would not be a promotion. In this case, it would have been a lateral move.

The San Francisco 49ers hired Nick Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator, but not before doing their due diligence on other options. That included Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. There was mutual interest in exploring a marriage, according to multiple league sources, but ultimately the Jets made it clear that they were not going to let Ulbrich leave.

The 49ers never made a request to interview Ulbrich regardless. They ultimately decided to promote Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator. Sorensen spent 2023 as the defensive passing game specialist and nickels coach.

Depending on how 2024 plays out, Ulbrich could be in the head-coaching mix for 2025. For now, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Jeff Ulbrich leads shorthanded National team to 16-7 Senior Bowl win

Jeff Ulbrich is a Senior Bowl winning head coach.

Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich can now call himself a winning head coach at the Senior Bowl. Despite being very shorthanded due to juries and players opting out of the game, Ulbrich’s National team still found a way to score a 16-7 victory in Saturday’s 75th Reese’s Senior Bowl.

South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler, despite only playing two series, went 4-for-4 for 65 yards and a touchdown and was named the game’s MVP. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix also threw a touchdown pass.

Washington State cornerback Chau Smith-Wade recorded two interceptions, including one almost returned for a touchdown, being tackled at the one-yard line. The National team couldn’t punch the ball in and settled for a field goal, but their defense stepped up all game.

The National team had a host of players not play, including Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and potential Jets selection Oregon State offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga.

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman saw the bulk of the action but only completed seven of 25 passes for 69 yards and an interception.

Ulbrich’s team was so shorthanded that we saw a player switch teams for the first time ever. Florida State defensive lineman Braden Fiske was moved to the National roster after spending all week of practice with the American side. That addition paid off for Ulbrich. Fiske had four tackles, including 1.5 for a loss as well as a half-sack.

Ulbrich received rave reviews for his week and work in the game with a shorthanded roster and his practices were much more smoother than those from the American team, which featured plenty of special teams work.

Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to be head coach at Senior Bowl

Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will get a taste of being a head coach down in Mobile, Alabama.

Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been a name circling around as a potential future head coach candidate in the NFL. He’ll get a taste of running a team in Mobile, Alabama as he will be the head coach of the National Team at the 2024 Senior Bowl.

The Senior Bowl announced the full coaching staffs for both the National and American Teams for the annual college all-star game that serves as one of the big events on the road to the NFL Draft, where a number of top NFL prospects convene to get a chance to compete against each other in an NFL-like setting in the hopes of improving their draft stock.

Among the coaches that will be on Ulbrich’s staff in Mobile include Giants QBs coach Shea Tierney (offensive coordinator), Vikings passing game coordinator / defensive backs coach Daronte Jones (defensive coordinator) and Saints assistant special teams coordinator Phil Galiano (special teams coordinator).

Jeff Ulbrich: Quincy Williams playing at ‘elite’ level, ‘not a better ‘backer in the league right now’

Jeff Ulbrich: Quincy Williams playing at ‘elite’ level

Jets linebacker Quincy Williams has been one of the best players on the defensive side of the football through four weeks. His play all over the field has been nothing short of spectacular. He is already showing he was worth the 3-year, $18 million deal he signed this offseason and some may argue he could already be worth more and that contract is already a bargain for the Jets.

Williams enters Week 5 tied for 9th in the league with 39 tackles and is currently the only linebacker with four passes defended. Williams had already shown he was an excellent tackler and sideline-to-sideline player. His improvement in pass coverage has only made him an even better player for the Jets this season and gives them one of the best linebacker pairings in the league alongside C.J. Mosley.

For those reasons and more, he is playing at an “elite” level in the eyes of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

“I would challenge everyone here and elsewhere that there’s not a better backer in the NFL right now,” Ulbrich said. “He is playing at an elite level in my opinion, and it’s just so exciting to see for the young man, because he’s a guy who just works so hard at it, it’s so important to him.

“I know when he came here [in 2021], it’s always hard when you get cut, especially by the team that drafted you (Jacksonville Jaguars). You had such promise, this and that, and you can start questioning yourself. That’s just human nature. For him to come here and really just grind and put his nose down and work and proved every single day with the humility, and then to get paid what he got paid and maybe go even further with his preparation and dedication to this game, it’s really cool. All the accolades, as well as he’s playing, it’s not by accident. The kid is working his [butt] off.”

So now when people talk about the Jets’ defense, Quinnen won’t be the only Williams brother being mentioned. No. 56 has also earned his stripes.

Jets won’t have Sauce Gardner shadow opposing team’s top WR for the foreseeable future

Sauce Gardner isn’t schemed to shadow an opposing team’s WR1 for the Jets and it looks like he won’t be doing it anytime soon.

The New York Jets have had to face talented wide receivers through the first two weeks, and both No. 1 wideouts they’ve faced have produced stellar outings. Despite the success the opposing receivers have had thus far, Jeff Ulbrich doesn’t believe the Jets will make a schematical change to allow Sauce Gardner to shadow the opposing team’s No. 1 receiver.

To kick off the 2023 season, Stefon Diggs hauled in 10 of his 13 targets for 102 yards and a touchdown against the Jets. Some of those receptions came with Gardner in coverage on the veteran pass catcher, but the second-year cornerback wasn’t asked to shadow Diggs throughout the game.

After allowing Diggs to eclipse 100 yards and a score, CeeDee Lamb tallied 11 receptions for 143 yards on 13 targets against the Jets in Week 2. Lamb roamed freely out of the slot for the majority of last week’s contest and rarely saw Gardner in coverage despite the Dallas Cowboys not having veteran Brandin Cooks available.

Gardner is certainly one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and teams around the league determine whether or not their best cornerback travels with the No. 1 receiver depending on their scheme. Over the next few weeks, the Jets won’t have to worry about facing a true No. 1 wide receiver.

But when the Jets take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6, it’ll be interesting to see if Ulbrich changes his tune on Gardner shadowing receivers when the team has to gameplan for A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

They’re not saying much, but Jeff Ulbrich and the Jets are using last year’s blowout loss to Patriots as motivation

The Jets still have 54-13 in the back of their minds from last season and want revenge

Patriots 54, Jets 13.

Week 7 of the 2021 season was one of the most forgettable moments of an overall forgettable, 4-13 season for the Jets.

The Jets allowed 551 net yards of offense, including 403 net passing yards. Rookie Mac Jones threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and RB Damien Harris ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

It was also the day Zach Wilson went down with a PCL strain and would go on to miss four games.

The Jets have a chance on Sunday to erase those memories and exercise their demons in the Patriots. And while they’re not saying much about it, the Jets are definitely using that game as motivation.

“I remember the score,” defensive coordinatorJeff Ulbrich told reporters Thursday. “I remember a lot of things. I remember it being 40+ and shots still being taken on us. It is what it is, it’s our job as a defensive coaching staff and as a defense to stop that. At the end of the day, it comes down to what we can control, and we allowed way too much last year. Been looking forward to this one.”

Ulbrich said he wasn’t too fired up about how the Patriots were still throwing the ball while up by 40+ in the fourth quarter and that the Patriots were breaking an unwritten code.

“Yeah, I wasn’t fired up about it. Try not to say too much. So, I’ve been told.”

Ulbrich also added how that game and the 45-30 loss to the Indianapolis Colts last were among the low points for him and the team last season.

“Yeah, that and the Indy game were probably places where there was a level of darkness I know within my own brain and soul and it was definitely trying,” Ulbrich said. “I like to say that we’re better because of it though. We’re stronger, I think in those times, adversity, people are really revealed and some people go south and some people go sideways and some people galvanize and then come together, I felt like that happened from a coaching perspective and from a player perspective.”

2022 so far has been a fresh start and a very positive place for Ulbrich and the Jets defense, who currently rank 10th in total DVOA, per Football Outsiders. The Jets sit at 5-2 and hold the first Wild Card in the AFC and are only a half-game behind the Buffalo Bills for the top spot in the AFC East. The defense has been a huge reason for that.

That includes rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner, who Ulbrich believes is special.

“As we all know, rookies struggle and they go through these lumps,” Ulbrich said. “Even the best rookies and the guys that end up having tremendous careers typically have moments, especially in their rookie year, where they’re stumbling and they’re finding their way and their learning through some adversity. He’s exceeded expectations from that standpoint. He’s playing at a high level.”

Ulbrich also made sure to show love to the rest of the secondary, along with Gardner.

“At the same time, I’d say D.J. Reed is playing at a high level, and I think Jordan (Whitehead) and Lamarcus (Joyner) playing at such a high level behind him has helped him in a lot of ways.”

That secondary, plus the rest of his defense, doing their thing on the field has helped the Jets build their confidence heading into this Patriots matchup. They’ve provided enough bulletin-board material without having to say much. But deep down, they would love nothing more than to exact revenge for that 54-13 beatdown at the hands of Bill Belichick.

John Franklin Myers on Jets D-line: ‘We don’t have any weaknesses’

John Franklin Myers on #Jets D-line: ‘We don’t have any weaknesses’

The bar for the New York Jets defensive line was raised thanks to John Franklin-Myers.

It’s early in the offseason, but from spring practice this week, Franklin-Myers said Gang Green’s defensive front has all the tools to get things done in 2022. The list of things the Jets defensive line can’t do might be shorter in his mind.

“We don’t have any weaknesses,” Franklin-Myers said via video conference on Wednesday. “Everybody brings a different element to the table.”

But Franklin-Myers did pull the reigns back a bit. He knows his words won’t mean much without execution come September.

“On paper is one thing. You can talk about what we have on paper, but we have to go out there and we have to be that and live that. That’s what our plan is,” he said.

The real trigger word for New York’s D-line is “depth.” That’s what the team sees as an invaluable tool to any potential success next season.

“It’s exciting to think about what they can become as a group,” defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said. “We didn’t have that luxury last year because of the depth that we didn’t have, so the fact that we have some more depth now, you can get back to really the essence of this front. Let these guys just absolutely rip it.”

“A lot of depth, a lot of competition, it’ll be exciting to see who emerges from that group,” Ulbrich added.

Franklin-Myers had career-best season for New York in 2021 highlighted by his six sacks and another half-dozen tackles for loss. Other returners include Quinnen Williams and Sheldon Rankins in the middle.

Fresh faces tossed into the fire are first-round rookie Jermaine Johnson and a former No. 3 overall pick with the San Francisco 49ers in Solomon Thomas who signed during free agency.

Hard to debate the depth isn’t there, but Franklin-Myers is right: The Jets will have to prove the depth’s talent.

The Jets’ biggest winners following the 2022 NFL draft

These Jets have to be happy with the outcome of the 2022 NFL draft:

The entire Jets organization must be feeling good following the 2022 NFL draft, but some members of the franchise have to be extra excited.

New York made seven picks, including three first-rounders. While some of those rookies will threaten a handful of Gang Green incumbents for roster spots and playing time, other holdovers are sure to benefit from the influx of talent. And then there are the Jets who have reasons to be happy about what New York didn’t do in the draft.

Let’s take a look at the Jets’ biggest winners following the draft.

2022 NFL draft: 20 prospects who perfectly fit Jeff Ulbrich’s Jets defense

These 20 2022 NFL draft prospects profile as ideal fits in Jeff Ulbrich’s Jets defense:

Scheme fit always plays a key role in the way a team shapes its draft board.

Coaches seldom try to fit square pegs into round holes, making a player’s skillset and system fit paramount to the way the draft plays out. For the Jets, Jeff Ulbrich’s 4-3 defense is predicated on generating pressure in the trenches and cornerbacks who can thrive in zone coverage on the outside.

Fortunately for New York, there are a number of scheme fits in the 2022 NFL draft later this month. Here are 20 prospects who would fit Ulbrich’s defense.

Scheme fit always plays a key role in the way a team shapes its free agent big board. Coaches seldom try to fit square pegs into round holes, making a player’s skill set and system fit paramount to the way free agency plays out.

Jeff Ulbrich’s defense is in need of widespread upgrades after it allowed the most points in the NFL in 2021. The Jets struggled to defend the pass and weren’t much better against the run. Fortunately for New York, there are plenty of players set to hit the open market who can fix those problems.

Here are 10 free agents who could fit in Ulbrich’s scheme.
