Knicks set potential return for Quentin Grimes following knee injury

Grimes was cleared to return to practice this week following a knee injury and is progressing toward a full recovery.

New York Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes was cleared to return to practice this week following a knee injury last month and is progressing toward a full recovery.

Grimes, who has missed the last nine games, suffered a dislocated kneecap on Feb. 25. He was ruled out for two weeks by the team but has not suffered any setbacks and was a full participant in practice on Tuesday, according to Steve Popper of News Day.

The 25th pick did not play on Wednesday in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers but could be available for head coach Tom Thibodeau on Friday versus the Washington Wizards.

Grimes said last week the injury was the first of its kind as the 21-year-old hadn’t ever missed more than a week of action throughout his basketball career. The injury appeared to be serious but Grimes suffered only minor ligament bruising and did not need surgery.

He is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and one assist in 40 games on 39.8% shooting from 3-point range. He played sparingly to begin the season but saw a larger role recently, averaging 13.3 points, four rebounds and 1.3 assists in four games prior to the injury.

Knicks: Quentin Grimes nearing next step in recovery from injury

Grimes could soon be cleared for full-contact practices after suffering a dislocated kneecap on Feb. 25.

New York Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes could soon be cleared for full-contact practices after suffering a dislocated kneecap on Feb. 25 versus the Miami Heat.

Grimes, who missed his sixth straight game on Wednesday, was ruled out for two weeks following the injury. The two-week timetable from the announcement by the team will be on Monday, meaning Grimes could return to practice early next week.

The 25th pick traveled with the Knicks on their current seven-game road trip and has participated in various on-court drills. He has not experienced any setbacks and is progressing toward a full recovery.

“He is moving around, getting closer and coming along nicely,” Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said, via the New York Post. “He is a phenomenal worker and you gotta give him a lot of credit. He is a fierce competitor. (Contact) will be the next step but (he is) doing everything else. So far there are no issues.”

The typical recovery time for his knee injury is 4-6 weeks. The replay of the incident appeared to be rather serious but Grimes experienced only slight ligament bruising. He did not need surgery to address it and is on pace to suit up again soon.

The injury, Grimes said on Wednesday, was the first of its kind.

It was my first injury that I’ve been sidelined for more than a week. So it was crazy when it happened but it wasn’t as bad as everybody thought it was. I think I was playing a little too hard and I just like dislocated a little bit and it went right back in and I rolled over.

Grimes is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and one assist in 40 games on 39.8% shooting from 3-point range. He played sparingly to begin the season but saw a larger role recently, averaging 13.3 points, four rebounds and 1.3 assists in four games prior to the injury.

Knicks’ Quentin Grimes put up shots with team in shootaround

Grimes was spotted doing some on-court work with the Knicks during shootaround prior to facing the Suns.

New York Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes on Friday was spotted doing some on-court work with the team during shootaround prior to facing the Phoenix Suns.

Grimes, who suffered a subluxation of his right patella on Feb. 25, was ruled out for the next two weeks. He will not require surgery to address the injury after only experiencing slight ligament bruising, a positive development considering the timetable to return is typically 4-6 weeks.

The 25th pick traveled with the Knicks on their seven-game road trip that will take them through March 13 in Brooklyn. Grimes could be cleared to play by the end of the trip but that will be dependent on how he responds to treatment.

Grimes is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and one assist in 40 games on 39.8% shooting from 3-point range. He played sparingly to begin the season but has seen a more prominent role of late and even started the last four games prior to the All-Star break.

Knicks: Quentin Grimes to miss at least 2 weeks with knee injury

Grimes initially suffered the injury on Friday in a loss to the Heat when he attempted to plant his leg to get around a screen.

New York Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes will miss at least two weeks with a subluxation of his right patella, or a partially dislocated kneecap, the team announced.

Grimes initially suffered the injury on Friday in a loss to the Miami Heat when he attempted to plant his leg to get around a screen. He will reportedly not need surgery after only experiencing some slight ligament bruising, according to Ashley Nicole Moss of Sports Illustrated.

The 25th pick is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and one assist in 40 games on 39.8% shooting from 3-point range. He played sparingly to begin the season but has seen a more prominent role of late and even started the last four games prior to the All-Star break.

The typical recovery time from a partial knee dislocation can vary, but the most common timeline is 4-6 weeks so Grimes and the Knicks appear to have caught a break. He has emerged as a key player for the team and looks to have avoided a major injury.

Knicks’ Quentin Grimes suffered a partially dislocated kneecap

Grimes on Friday suffered a knee injury versus the Heat and was eventually ruled out of returning to the contest.

New York Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes on Friday suffered a knee injury versus the Miami Heat and was eventually ruled out of returning to the 115-100 loss.

The Knicks announced that Grimes was diagnosed with a subluxation of his right patella or a partially dislocated kneecap. The injury occurred during the first quarter when he attempted to plant his leg and get around a screen. He logged just 14 seconds of action.

Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau remained hopeful the injury isn’t serious.

“He has played really well. It is unfortunate,” Thibodeau said afterward. “He has put a lot of work into it so, hopefully, when we’re updated, it is nothing serious.”

Grimes, in 40 games, is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and one assist on 39.8% shooting from 3-point range. He played sparingly to begin the season but has seen a more prominent role as of late and had even started the last four games prior to the All-Star break.

The 25th pick provided an update on the injury on Twitter.

The typical recovery time from a partial knee dislocation can vary but the most common timeline is 4-6 weeks so the Knicks could be without Grimes for the foreseeable future. The Knicks have yet to provide an official timetable.

Report: Knicks rejected Hawks’ trade offer for rookie Quentin Grimes

The Hawks reportedly wanted to acquire Grimes in the deal involving Cam Reddish on Thursday.

On Thursday, the New York Knicks reportedly agreed to acquire Cam Reddish from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kevin Knox and a protected 2022 first-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Reddish, in his third year, saw a smaller role with the Hawks this season with a crowded depth chart at the wing position. The Hawks worked to move Reddish as a result to a team that could offer him a larger role and contract extension this summer.

The Knicks also acquired Solomon Hill and a 2025 second-round pick.

Prior to settling on Kevin Knox, the Hawks had initially targeted rookie Quentin Grimes, the 25th pick. However, some within the Knicks’ front office were opposed to moving Grimes and the team ultimately decided to trade Knox instead, according to Ian Begley of SNY.

With the trade, Reddish will now have the opportunity to see a larger role and help the Knicks stay in the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. He will reunite with former Duke teammate R.J. Barrett as the two were close friends during their time in college.

The Knicks certainly believe Grimes has a bright future after opting against trading him. He had mostly played sparingly with the Knicks but recently saw a larger role due to multiple injuries and players entering the health and safety protocol.

Grimes produced a career-high 27 points on Dec. 12 in a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks but was placed into the protocol himself the following day. Since returning on Christmas Day, Grimes is averaging 6.7 points and 2.1 rebounds in 21.1 minutes across 10 appearances.

Quentin Grimes enters COVID-19 protocols after career performance

The news comes just two days after Grimes hit a Knicks rookie record seven 3-pointers en route to a career-high 27 points.

New York Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes was added to the NBA’s health and safety protocols and will not play on Tuesday versus the Golden State Warriors, the team announced.

The timeline for Grimes to return to the court is not known but players entered into the health and safety protocols could miss up to 10 days. They can be cleared to play sooner if they return two consecutive negative PCR tests taken at least 24 hours apart.

The news comes just two days after Grimes hit a Knicks franchise rookie record seven 3-pointers en route to a career-high 27 points in a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. He earned the start in that contest with the Knicks down a few players.

The breakout performance by Grimes came as the 25th overall pick had played sparingly to begin the season. He was not part of the rotation for head coach Tom Thibodeau and had totaled just 24 points across 13 appearances prior to Sunday.

With Grimes out on Tuesday, the Knicks will also be without RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin as they were entered into the health and safety protocols on Sunday.

NBA free agency: Projected lineup for Knicks with Kemba Walker

The New York Knicks made a splash with a playoff appearance this past season and have continued to make noise with an active offseason.

The New York Knicks made a splash with a playoff appearance this past season and have continued to make noise with an active offseason.

During his first year as head coach of the Knicks, head coach Tom Thibodeau got the most out of his players. Julius Randle took a huge step forward, winning the NBA’s Most Improved Player. Meanwhile, Immanuel Quickley outperformed expectations and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second-Team.

The organization built on that success by re-signing Derrick Rose and Nerlens Noel. They have also managed to sign big names such as Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker, who were actually teammates on the Boston Celtics in 2020-21.

Statistically speaking, Walker’s play was elevated quite a bit once Fournier joined the Celtics. Boston outscored opponents by an excellent 14.8 points per 100 possessions when Walker and Fournier were on the floor at the same time during regular-season action, per PBP Stats. Boston’s net rating (1.1) was much worse when Walker appeared without Fournier.

Meanwhile, Walker averaged 27.0 points per 36 minutes when he shared the court with Fournier. Compare that figure to the 22.5 points per 36 minutes in minutes he played without Fournier this past season.

The two players can add some value to the momentum that the Knicks had en route to the 2021 NBA Playoffs. especially if players like Quickley and RJ Barrett continue their development.

A roundup of NBA sleepers draft analysts are higher on than others

Who owns the most real estate on Davion Mitchell Island? Who is buying stock in Sharife Cooper?

Everyone loves Cade Cunningham. It’s not a hot take for an analyst to say that Cunningham is their favorite player in the class. That’s not particularly interesting to read, either.

But what is fascinating, however, is when an analyst deviates from the norm and ranks someone significantly higher than where the prospect falls in other rankings. What does that tell us about their individual scouting process and what they value? Further, what does that tell us about the potential draftee?

Some folks call it “buying stock” in a player. Others, like ESPN’s Zach Lowe or The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, call it owning real estate on a player’s island. I like to refer to it as a “draft crush” when I wind up higher than consensus in my evaluation of a player.

My process is ridiculously tedious but the results can be fairly useful. I’ve tracked the evolution of more than sixty unique mock drafts, big boards and draft models from trusted analysts and popular accounts on Twitter.

Each placement is assigned a value based on Kevin Pelton’s draft pick trade value chart. I do this because, as Pelton notes, the difference in relative value between the No. 5 overall pick and the No. 7 overall is much more stark than, say, that of the No. 45 pick and the No. 47 pick.

After composing an aggregate score based on each ranking, I can see where each analyst strays from the pack.

I’ll leave the conclusions drawn from these results up to the reader. But if nothing else, this can eventually be used as a bragging point if one writer was higher than consensus on a draftee who eventually ends up outperforming his draft position.
