Chiefs officially announce signing of backup QB Chad Henne

Henne’s contract with the Kansas City Chiefs is official. They’ve got a backup QB for the 2020 season and beyond.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made their signing of backup QB Chad Henne official.

They’re allowed to do this now, without a physical being done, as the NFL sent out a notice to teams. Players must have reached an agreement on a contract and have it in front of them before teams are allowed to announce.

The Chiefs opted to re-sign Henne on a two-year contract, over Matt Moore, who currently has a very active free-agent market. Kansas City already had chosen Henne over Moore once before, ahead of the 2018 season, when Henne first signed with the team. Now, they’ll opt for Henne to backup Patrick Mahomes for a third season.

Henne has appeared in just one game in his two seasons with the Chiefs, throwing three passes with two completions for 29 yards. He’s never started a game in Kansas City and hasn’t started a game since 2014. At the very, least he’s as fresh as a backup quarterback could possibly be.

Henne was hurt for the majority of 2019 season after suffering an ankle injury during the preseason. He spent the majority of 2019 on injured reserve before eventually returning as one of two players designated to return from IR. Henne was active for just one game during the 2019 playoff run, while Moore was sick.

With any luck, the Chiefs won’t need Henne’s services in 2020, but it’s good to know that they at least have someone who is familiar with the system if something were to happen.

Foundation of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes donates $100K to provide meals, household items to families in need

Kansas City Chiefs players continue to do good in the surrounding community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The star players of the Kansas City Chiefs continue to do good in the community amidst panic and tensions over the COVID-19 pandemic.

First, Tyreek Hill donated 6,000 meals to the Harvesters Community Food Network in Kansas City. The food bank helps provide meals across 26 counties spanning Kansas and Missouri. Hill took to Twitter and challenged his teammates to do the same.

Travis Kelce took Hill up on that challenge, donating 12,000 meals to Harvesters. Now, Patrick Mahomes has joined in to help the Kansas City community. In addition to donating 15,000 meals for Harvesters, the 15 and the Mahomies foundation is committing $100K in aid to Kansas City Public School lunch programs and local organizations that provide household items to those in need.

Check it out:

“To help ease anxiety and tension during these uncertain times, the 15 and The Mahomies Foundation is committing $100,000 to Kansas City Public Lunch programs and local organizations that provide meals and household goods to families in need,” the foundation announced on Twitter. “15 and The Mahomies sends its prayers to all impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and looks forward to brighter days as this too shall pass.”

It’s amazing to see the players from the Chiefs come together and support the people of Kansas City during their darkest hour. During times of trial and uncertainty, supporting these types of organizations via donation makes a world of difference. It ensures that the growing number of people in need of resources like food, water, and household items has a steady supply available to them. This donation will surely help as the citizens of Kansas City continue to deal with the spread of the coronavirus.

Report: Chiefs to re-sign backup QB Chad Henne

The Kansas City Chiefs have their backup quarterback signed through 2021.

The Kansas City Chiefs have solved their backup quarterback dilemma.

Both Matt Moore and Chad Henne were scheduled to become free agents in 2020, leaving Kansas City with limited options behind star QB Patrick Mahomes. At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, I asked Chiefs general manager Brett Veach about his plans at the backup QB position.

“We’ve been blessed and fortunate to have two veteran guys that just did a tremendous job,” Veach told Chiefs Wire. “Chad (Henne) got hurt. And Matt (Moore) came out of retirement and played really good football for us in that Minnesota game that we won in the middle of the season. It was a big deal. We actually have two meetings scheduled with both their representatives this week as well. We’ll see how that goes, but I anticipate one of those guys being back and we’ll have to work through the dialogue with both their agents and see what makes sense for them and us.”

Veach has made a decision on which of the two will be back with the Chiefs for the 2020 season and beyond. According to a new report from Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, Henne will remain the backup for Kansas City with a new two-year deal.

Henne has played in just one game in his two seasons with the Chiefs, throwing three passes with two completions for 29 yards. Henne spent the majority of the 2019 season on injured reserve, which precipitated the need for signing Moore out of retirement. Henne eventually was designated as one of two players returning from injury. He was active for one game during the 2019 playoff run that resulted in Super Bowl LIV.

Now that the Chiefs have the backup QB situation solved, you can scratch quarterback off their list of needs in the 2020 NFL draft. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see them bring in an undrafted free agent or two to compete with Henne and second-year QB Kyle Shurmur.

Since Henne was under contract with Kansas City last season, he’s free to sign with the team immediately. Expect the official announcement to come from the Chiefs sometime tomorrow.

Andy Reid says Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes won’t need surgery on previously injured kneecap

Offseason surgery was something that was discussed shortly after Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ kneecap dislocation injury.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes narrowly avoided serious injury during the 2019 NFL season. Mahomes suffered a patella dislocation injury during the Week 7 win over the Denver Broncos and missed two games before returning to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 10. Mahomes would go on to lead the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV.

Initially following the injury to Mahomes there some reports that Mahomes would need offseason surgery in order to stabilize his kneecap and avoid the risk of reinjury in the future. Chiefs HC Andy Reid was asked about the possibility of surgery this offseason for Mahomes and it doesn’t appear to be something they’re considering at this time.

“Right now, he looks good,” Reid said of Mahomes. “He was out throwing with Dez (Bryant) the other day. He looked like he was slinging it around pretty good. So yeah, I think he’s fine.”

Mahomes made it through the Super Bowl without any issues and his exit physical didn’t reveal any issues that would require surgery. Remember, we learned that Mahomes’ knees are unique and essentially double-jointed. That appears to be playing a role in his health and recovery from this specific type of injury.

A healthy offseason for Mahomes without rehabilitation and injury recovery should make the goal of a repeat Super Bowl much more achievable in Kansas City.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is the face of the NFL Scouting Combine

Mahomes’ face is featured on banners advertising the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has been called the face of the NFL before. He’s very literally the face of the NFL at the combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. When travelers arrive at the Indianapolis International Airport they’re greeted by a massive banner advertising the combine that features Mahomes and Giants RB Saquon Barkley. Both are pictured in their NFL uniforms as well as their uniforms from the combine.

“The future starts here,” reads the banner.

The players set to debut at the combine this week are the future of the league and the NFL is using some of their biggest stars to remind folks of that. Here’s a look at the banner from Chiefs Wire contributing writer Ed Easton Jr:

Mahomes has quickly ascended to an elite status in the NFL, and the league is taking every opportunity to market him because of it. In his first year as a starter, Mahomes became the league MVP. In his second season as a starter, he led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl win in 50 seasons and became Super Bowl MVP.

Mahomes was among the top performers at the NFL combine in 2017, so it makes sense to market him at this event in particular. How does it feel to know that the Chiefs’ quarterback is the face of the NFL? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter.

Texas offers 2021 four star quarterback

Texas has offered 2021 QB Sawyer Robertson out of Coronado High School. Listed as a four-star QB, Robertson would join a busy QB room.

Texas has offered 2021 quarterback Sawyer Robertson out of Coronado High School in Lubbock, TX. Currently rated a four-star prospect on 247sports.com, Robertson is the tenth highest pocket passer QB in the 2021 class.

The Longhorns are his tenth offer, receiving them from Power 5 schools like Louisville, Mississippi State, Washington State, and Wisconsin. Other local Texas schools like SMU, North Texas, and Texas State have also offered Robertson.

While 2020 will be a full quarterback room with Sam Ehlinger, Casey Thompson, Roschon Johnson, and Hudson Card, 2021 will be an open battle for the role of starter.

A quarterback has already committed to Texas in the 2021 class, with Jalen Milroe verbally committing in July. If Robertson were to join Milroe in the class, it would be even busier in the quarterback room than it will be next season.

WATCH: Dan Marino jokes he could pass for 6,000 yards in a season

Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino went on FS1’s “First Things First” this week to discuss the current state of quarterbacks in the league and who has impressed him most.

Step aside, young quarterbacks of the NFL. There’s an old gunslinger back in town.

Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino went on FS1’s “First Things First” this week to discuss the current state of quarterbacks in the league and who has impressed him most.

When asked about today’s NFL and how passing numbers have skyrocketed in recent years, Marino joked that he could pass for 6,000 yards and 60 touchdowns in a season if he played now:

The passing leaders for the 2019 regular season were Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson with 36 touchdown passes and Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston with 5,109 passing yards, so that would still be quite a jump even for today’s era.

Marino clearly made the claim in jest, but wouldn’t you like to see him try anyway?

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes looking for more consistent performance vs. Raiders in Week 13

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is looking for a steady and balanced offensive attack throughout the entire four quarters of a game.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is looking for something a little different out of his offense in Week 13.

When the Chiefs first faced the Oakland Raiders in Week 2, it was a performance that saw ebbs and flows from the offense. The Chiefs started out cold in the first quarter but exploded in the second quarter scoring 28 points. Kansas City ended up defeating the Raiders 28-10 scoring all of their points in one-quarter of play. Mahomes knows that type of thing isn’t sustainable and he wants to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

“I think the biggest thing is our day to day process,” Mahomes said. “Just going about our business and handling it the same way we would every other week. The Raiders have a good team and are playing really well this whole season defensively. We had a quarter where we went off but there were times in that game where we just stalled. So, for us it’s just trying to maintain drives, keep the ball moving and keeping positive plays moving.”

The Chiefs offense stalled a few times as recently as Week 11 against the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s been a constant problem this season, one that Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy worked to correct during the bye week. They hope to lean on the fundamental approach to eliminate the mistakes and penalties that have plagued the Chiefs this season.

It’s important that they work toward eliminating those errors because this game is the difference between first place in the AFC West or settling for wild card spot in the playoffs. Kansas City isn’t taking that lightly, especially with the game coming against a bitter rival like Oakland. Mahomes, in particular, is well aware of what is at stake this week.

“Yeah, definitely. Especially, playing the Raiders. The rivalry we have here has been a good one for a long time,” Mahomes said. “Being for first place in the division and setting yourself up for the rest of the season is definitely going to be a big one. We’re excited for the opportunity to get to play at Arrowhead. We haven’t been here in a while. I haven’t played here in what seems like two months now, so I’m excited to play in front of our fans and against a great opponent.”

If the Chiefs can get back to playing a steady and balanced four quarters of football, they should be able to win this game and take a 2.5 game lead on the AFC West division as they head into the final quarter of the season.

WATCH: Alex Smith’s wife posts incredible video documenting QB’s recovery

Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been through a lot and this video shows the progress he’s made as he finally returns to football work.

Former Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith is just over a year removed from suffering a devastating broken leg with the Washington Redskins.

It’s been a long road, but Smith has made serious strides in his rehabilitation. He’s now allowed to work on some football stuff like being able to run, drop back and throw. On Monday, Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, took to Instagram to share a video documenting the yearlong recovery and rehab. Check it out:

“November 18th… 1 Year and so much to be grateful for,” Elizabeth wrote in the photo caption.

Playing in the NFL again is still the goal for her husband, and he still has a few steps to go in the process before he could return to game action. For now, he’s doing what he can and taking everything one day at a time. In the meantime, he’s helping out in the Washington QB room as best he can.

At practice recently, he was spotted snapping the ball to rookie Dwayne Haskins during individual drills.

Washington fans are hopeful that as Smith continues his recovery, he can impart every piece of wisdom to Haskins that he’s accumulated in his 13-year NFL career, just as he did in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes.
