New Orleans Saints schedule rookie minicamp tryouts

The New Orleans Saints scheduled their rookie minicamp tryouts for May 12-14, creating opportunity for many young players competing for roster spots:

There we go: the New Orleans Saints have scheduled their rookie minicamp practices for May 12, 13, and 14. This is a good opportunity for their 2023 draft class — both players who were picked and those who signed as undrafted free agents — to get on the field, go through drills, and begin to pick up the playbook.

It’s also an opportunity for dozens of other players to try out alongside their peers. Teams usually bring in a mix of first- and second-year free agents as well as a handful of NFL veterans, all of whom will be competing for a roster spot during the summer.

New Orleans currently has five vacancies on their 90-man offseason roster, having waived reserve quarterback Jake Luton and running back Derrick Gore after selecting other players at their positions during the 2023 draft (TCU running back Kendre Miller and Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener). So it’s a safe bet that some of those open roster spots will be filled by players trying out at these minicamp practices next weekend.

Highlights from Jaguars joint practices vs. Falcons

If the #Jaguars play how they’ve been practicing against the #Falcons they could lock up their first win on Saturday.

With the last week of preseason halfway gone, the Jacksonville Jaguars flashed some serious skill with some impressive highlights against the Atlanta Falcons in joint practices on Wednesday. The teams are gaining familiarity with each other at the combined practice sessions, and from the looks of it, the Jaguars are taking full advantage of the opportunity.

Several clips of the team’s dominant play surfaced on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, showing just how exciting this Jacksonville team might be in the regular season.

Take a look at these plays, and try not to get too excited about what is to come this year:

With a few more weeks of quality practices like they had on Wednesday, the Jaguars should be in a position to play much more competitive football than they did at this point last season. They have a competent roster chock-full of rising stars on both sides of the ball, and a with a win against the Falcons could take a full head of steam into the regular season in September.

Jacksonville has managed to avoid the injury bug in the preseason, and as the old adage goes, the best ability in the NFL is availability. If they can escape the intense joint practices this week with the top-end of their roster remaining injury-free, they should have a good chance to surprise some teams who underestimate the squad they’ve put together in head coach Doug Pederson’s first season.

It’ll take time to see how the Jaguars convert on the promise of their 2022 season, but for now, especially with the excellent videos coming out of practices, the future looks as bright as ever in Duval County. Given how excellent the team has looked in these preseason opportunities to shine, fans should expect nothing less than marked improvement over their 2021 campaign this year.

These shared practices will get underway across the NFL this week, but Saints fans will be keenly focused on those taking place in Green Bay. Here are three players we’re watching during the first Saints and Packers joint practice:

Chiefs begin Week 2 of OTAs on Tuesday

The #Chiefs begin their second of three groups of OTA practices on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue Phase 3 of the offseason program this week, with their second set of three groups of OTAs beginning on Tuesday, May 31st.

The team kicked off the offseason workout program back on April 18. They’ve gone through voluntary strength and conditioning workouts, plus a reintroduction of on-field instruction and drills. The team had two OTA practices last week, kicking off Phase 3 of the offseason program which reintroduces “real” football.

Here is what Phase 3 entails, via the NFL’s offseason workout press release:

“Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Article 22 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that clubs may hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players. This minicamp, noted below, must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program”

The Chiefs will have three OTA practices this week from May 31 through June 2. They’ll conclude OTAs with four consecutive days of practice from June 7 through June 10.

OTAs serve as a good launching point ahead of the team’s Mandatory Minicamp which will take place from June 14 through June 16. There is still no live contact in this part of the offseason workout program, but the inclusion of team drills puts the team one step closer to a full return to action.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury, absence updates at OTAs

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke on a few minor injuries and absences at the first week of OTA practices.

Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to the media on Thursday for the first time since OTAs began. Reid provided some updates on injured players and also those who are simply absent from voluntary practices.

There were no significant injuries to report at this point of the offseason which is very good news, but there were a few absences related to minor injury and illness.

“We’ve got a few injuries or sicknesses,” Reid said. “A few muscle pull things, nothing that is big. It is the offseason, so I’ll just leave it at that.”

Reid would later elaborate that veteran receiver Mecole Hardman was one of the players who was dealing with a minor injury.

“Mecole (Hardman) he’s one of the ones,” Reid said. “He tweaked a hamstring early there, yesterday.”

There were some other absences not related to injuries. Orlando Brown Jr., the team’s franchise tag player, was absent as he continues to search for an agent. Once he lands an agent, Reid expects that things will progress on contract extension talks. The team has until July 15 to get a long-term deal done.

“He’s still working to get an agent,” Reid said of Brown. “He’s interviewing these different people. So once he gets that taken care of, we’ll be able to roll. I know he’s working out down in Florida. So he is getting his work in.”

Frank Clark and Chris Jones were also among the players absent from practice on Thursday.

One injured player was spotted back at practice — with TE Jody Fortson returning to action. He is coming off of a season-ending Achilles injury in 2021. There wasn’t a guarantee that Fortson would be back in action for Phase 3, but it’s a good sign that he is back out there working.

Chiefs begin padded training camp practices today

We’re one step closer to real Kansas City Chiefs football.

The Kansas City Chiefs can hold padded training camp practices for the first time this offseason beginning today.

The team has left the gradual ramp-up period and entered what is described by the NFL and NFLPA as the contact integration period of training camp.  During this period a number of things can happen, but the most significant change is the inclusion of pads and full contact. The Chiefs and the Houston Texans will be the first teams to practice in pads as they open the season on Sept. 10.

The Chiefs can hold a maximum of 14 padded practices during the 21-day contact integration period. These will be 90-minute practices with 15-minute increases each day up to 120-minute practices in total. No practice duration increase or decrease following a day off is permitted during this period.

With the lack of preseason games, these 14 padded practices will be pivotal for teams and players. They’ll be especially important for rookie players as they get acclimated to the speed of the NFL game. It’ll be important for the offensive line building chemistry. They’ll be important for defenders getting ready for contact. It’ll be important for veteran players, to get their bodies prepared for the rigors of the 2020 NFL season. With pads and live contact also comes the risk of injury, which is something we’ll have to watch closely for the next 21 days.

Chiefs fans can see a live look-in from practice with Mitch Holthus and Matt McMullen on the official team YouTube channel and Facebook page. The show is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. CT on both Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15.
