Virginia at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Virginia at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers (10-2, 2-1 ACC) visit the Pittsburgh Panthers (10-4, 3-0) Tuesday for a 9 p.m. ET tipoff at Petersen Events Center (ACC Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Virginia vs. Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Virginia beat Georgia Tech 74-56 Saturday to cover as a 9-point road favorite. It was the 1st time the Cavaliers covered a spread in their previous 8 games. On the season, they are 4-8 against the spread (ATS). Virginia’s strength is its defense, which ranks 11th in the nation in points allowed per game (58.3).

Pittsburgh beat North Carolina 76-74 Friday, covering as a 6.5-point home underdog. The Panthers have covered the spread 9 straight times. Overall, they are 10-3-1 ATS. Pittsburgh ranks 31st in rebounds per game (39.9) and 28th defensive rebounds per game (28.3).

Virginia at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

Virginia 63, Pittsburgh 59

Moneyline

PASS.

Virginia (-280) doesn’t present enough value in risk vs. return (2.8 for 1).

Against the spread

BET PITTSBURGH +5.5 (-105).

The Panthers have been on an ATS tear recently, covering in their last 9 games. Coming off a big win against UNC, they are trying to make a push into the Top 25. They have to feel slighted as they didn’t receive any votes in the recent Coaches or AP Polls.

The Cavaliers rank 185th in free-throw percentage (70.5%) and 297th in rebounds per game (33.1). Until they find a way to improve on these metrics, they will continue leaving crucial points off the board, which will allow for a PITTSBURGH +5.5 (-105) cover Tuesday night.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 127.5 (-115).

Virginia ranks 120th field-goal percentage (45.8%), while Pittsburgh ranks 147 (45.2%). In a highly touted ACC matchup, the energy combined with the competitiveness will impact each teams’ ability to score.

In their previous 10 head-to-head meetings, the O/U line has only been above 127.5 once and the Under hit in that game. In the 10-game span, they have only put up more than 127 points 3 times — and one was an overtime game.

North Carolina at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s North Carolina at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The North Carolina Tar Heels (9-4, 1-1 ACC) visit the Pittsburgh Panthers (9-4, 2-0) Friday. Tip from Petersen Events Center is set for noon ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the North Carolina vs. Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

North Carolina beat Michigan 80-76 on a neutral court Dec. 21 but failed to cover as 5-point favorites. The Tar Heels are 4-8-1 against the spread (ATS) but have covered 3 of their last 4 games. Returning many players from their championship-winning roster a season ago, the expectations have not met the reality. North Carolina is 0-2 straight up in true road games.

Pittsburgh is 6-1 straight up at home. The Panthers are coming off an 84-82 win over Syracuse, covering as 3.5-point road underdogs. The Panthers have an impressive 9-3-1 ATS record and have covered 8 games in a row. Pittsburgh has seen success behind a defense that ranks 73rd in opponents’ field goal percentage (40.5%) and 43rd in opponents’ three-point field goal percentage (29.1%).

  • Moneyline (ML): North Carolina -290 (bet $290 to win $100) | Pittsburgh +210 (bet $100 to win $210)
  • Against the spread (ATS): North Carolina -6.5 (-110) | Pittsburgh +6.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 149.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

North Carolina at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

North Carolina 79, Pittsburgh 73

Moneyline

PASS.

There’s no value betting on North Carolina (-290) here. However, while I do like Pittsburgh (+210) to cover I wouldn’t play their moneyline despite that the payout for a team that is 6-1 straight up at home is enticing.

Against the spread

LEAN PITTSBURGH +6.5 (-110).

Pittsburgh is 6-1 straight up at home while UNC is 0-2 straight up on the road. The season-long ATS records point to Pitt as well with it being 9-3-1 which compares favorably to UNC’s 4-8-1.

UNC lost to Virginia Tech and Indiana on the road in its last 6 games, so I wouldn’t trust the Tar Heels to get things done as they haven’t proven they can away from the Dean Smith Center.

Over/Under

BET OVER 149.5 (-110).

UNC has gone Over in 3 straight games and scored 75 or more in 5 straight, including 80 or more in its last 3. It is 7-6 O/U this season and ranks 30th in points per game (81.5).

Pittsburgh has gone Over in 3 of its last 4 games and is 8-5 O/U this season. They have also scored at least 80 in their last 3 games.

This should be a high-tempo game with plenty of talented scorers taking the court. Back the OVER 149.5 (-110).

Michigan vs. Pitt odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Michigan vs. Pitt odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 21 Michigan Wolverines (2-0) travel to Brooklyn to take on the Pitts Panthers (1-1) in the Barclay Center Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan vs. Pitt odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Michigan comes into the rare early-season Power 5 matchup after beating Eastern Michigan and highly-touted Emony Bates 88-83 Friday in Detroit. The Wolverines were 17.5-point favorites and the teams hit the over by 26 points. C Hunter Dickinson is averaging 26.5 points after the 1st 2 games.

Pittsburgh comes in after losing by 25 (as a 2.5-point underdog) to rival West Virginia 81-56 at home on Friday. Pitt has not been the same since coach Jamie Dixon left and it looks to be another down season ahead for the Panthers.

Michigan vs. Pitt picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan 76, Pitt 61

Moneyline

PASS.

The ML in this game is too high to make a reasonable play on.

Against the spread

BET MICHIGAN -8.5 (-112).

Michigan is coming off a high scoring game against Eastern Michigan will continue its hot shooting in this game against an overmatched Pitt team.

Pitt was only able to put up 56 against West Virginia at home on Friday and an offensive explosion in this game is not in the cards.

The Wolverines will use the 3-point game as well as dominance under the net to beat up and go around the Panthers. Michigan -8.5 (-112) is my favorite paly.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 138.5 (-112).

Michigan has averaged 81.5 points in its first 2 game s of the season. Pitt has averaged 68, but that is only due to putting up 80 against an outclassed UT-Martin team in its opener. When it faced an opponent of equal talent in West Virginia, it only managed 56. Michigan is better than Pitt. It is better than West Virginia. And the result will be the same. A low-scoring Pitt output. Michigan will do its part. Pitt will not. Give me the Under 138.5 (-112).

Syracuse at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Syracuse Orange at Pittsburgh Panthers odds and lines, with college football expert picks and predictions.

The No. 22 Syracuse Orange (6-2, 3-1 ACC) visit the Pittsburgh Panthers (4-4, 1-3 ACC) Saturday at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (ACC Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Rankings courtesy of the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Syracuse lost at home 41-24 to Notre Dame last Saturday, its 2nd-straight setback after starting the season 6-0. The 20th-ranked squad in the College Football Playoff rankings was crushed in the running game 246 yards to 61, leading to a 37:40 time of possession for the Fighting Irish. SU has coughed up 539 rushing yards in the last 2 weeks; the Orange allowed 293 in a 27-21 loss to No. 5 Clemson on Oct. 22.

The Panthers dropped a 42-24 decision Saturday at now-No. 15 North Carolina. Pitt led 24-21 heading into the 4th quarter, but could not hang on and lost for the 3rd time in its last 4 games. Junior RB Israel Abanikanda ran the ball 26 times for 127 yards and he has tallied 576 yards and 10 TDs in his last 3 games.

Syracuse at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

Syracuse 24, Pittsburgh 21

Moneyline

A tough slate for both sides continues, but the recent schedule has been especially tough for Syracuse. Last week SU was undone by some factors that indicate some bad luck more than bad play. The Orange were a combined 4-of-15 on 3rd and 4th downs, and they were hurt by multiple short-field drives. They also struggled on 3rd downs in their road loss at Clemson 2 weeks back.

This game against against the Panthers pits a solid SU offensive line against a solid UP defensive line. But look for Syracuse — a team that showed a lot of guts in the way it played in a tough road environment at Clemson — to have more success on 1st and 2nd downs and for havoc plays to be plentiful on both sides in a close exchange down to the wire.

A combined play — perhaps 25% on the ML and 75% ATS — on the Orange makes sense here. BACK SYRACUSE (+155).

Against the spread

The road team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 series meetings.

TAKE SYRACUSE +3.5 (-110).

Over/Under

No room to quibble with this total. PASS.

Pittsburgh at North Carolina odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Pittsburgh Panthers at North Carolina Tar Heels odds and lines, with college football expert picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Panthers (4-3, 1-2 ACC) face the North Carolina Tar Heels (6-1, 3-0) in an ACC Coastal clash on Saturday night. Kickoff at  Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill is 8 p.m. ET (ACC Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Pittsburgh has had an uneven season that has thus far been highlighted by a great performance against current-No. 3 Tennessee (34-27 loss Sept. 10) and low-lighted by recent setbacks against Georgia Tech (26-21 on Oct. 1) and Louisville (24-10 on Oct. 22). The Panthers were a 1-point underdog in last week’s game at UL but were undone by a minus-3 in turnovers, and a 10-7 lead fell apart in the 4th quarter.

The Tar Heels have won back-to-back games by a 1-score margin and have won 4 such games this season. They defeated Duke 38-35 on Oct. 15 leading into a bye week. UNC is averaging 506.0 total yards per game, which ranks 1st in the ACC and 8th in the country.

North Carolina is No. 21 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Pittsburgh at North Carolina picks and predictions

Prediction

North Carolina 35, Pittsburgh 34

Moneyline

In its last 2 games, North Carolina lost one statistical match-up (vs. Miami) and tied the other (vs. Duke), but the Tar Heels managed a pair of 1-score victories.

Pitt is a lean in this game, but the Panthers are worth more of a look against the number. PASS.

Against the spread

The Tar Heels are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a bye week. The Panthers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight-up loss.

The UNC pass offense (326.7 YPG, 9th FBS) figures as the best sector of this contest. But the Pitt defense and running game are not too far behind. Both play into the Panthers being a leverage play Saturday night.

The Pitt defense — especially the backfield — is adept at causing havoc. The Panthers are a middle-of-the-pack team in interceptions, but they rank 3rd in the nation in pass break-ups and 17th in sacks. They are, perhaps, turnover-due in hanging around at their minus-2 margin through 7 games. Pittsburgh is decent in defending the red zone; that will be key against a UNC offense that thrives in closing out drives with 6.

The North Carolina defense struggles in its own end of the field. They have allowed too much 1st- and 2nd-down success this season, and that has led to the Tar Heels allowing 476.3 YPG (125th).

TAKE PITTSBURGH +3.5 (-125).

Over/Under

Good weather, UNC’s expected success and issues on both sides of the ball, a close game late, and a balanced Pitt offense, mix with a short field or 2 and make for solid leverage on the OVER 65.5 (-110).

Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3, 1-1 ACC) will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers (3-2, 0-1 ACC) Saturday at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Virginia Tech vs. Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Hokies began the season with a 2-1 record, but they’ve lost to North Carolina and West Virginia in the last 2 weeks by a combined score of 74-20. QB Grant Wells has struggled for Tech with 983 passing yards, 5 TDs and 6 INTs.

This isn’t a typical Pat Narduzzi-coached team for the Panthers as they’ve gotten into quite a few shootouts this season. RB Israel Abanikanda has been the engine to Pittsburgh’s offense with 510 rushing yards and 6 TDs.

Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

Pittsburgh 34, Virginia Tech 17

Moneyline

I’m going to PASS on taking the moneyline in this contest with Pittsburgh expected to win by double-digits at home. Even with the Panthers being heavy favorites at home, betting on them to win straight up won’t net much of a return at their current odds.

Against the spread

The Panthers at least have some positives from their offense, which is why I’ll take PITTSBURGH -14.5 (-120) at home. The Hokies make too many mistakes on offense and the Panthers are capable of scoring points in bunches when they have their passing game and running game flowing together.

Pittsburgh is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games following a straight-up loss. On the other side of things, Virginia Tech is 0-7 ATS in its last 7 road meetings against Pittsburgh and 2-12 ATS in the last 14 overall meetings.

Over/Under

The OVER 41.5 (-115) is where I’m leaning despite Virginia Tech struggling to put up points in recent weeks. Pittsburgh can score enough points to nearly reach the Over as they’ve scored 34-plus points in each of its 3 wins this season.

The Panthers have achieved the Over in 8 of their 9 games following a straight-up loss. Plus, the Over has hit in 5 of the last 6 meetings between the Hokies and the Panthers when the game takes place in Pittsburgh.

Georgia Tech at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Georgia Tech at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1 ACC) and the Pittsburgh Panthers (3-1, 0-0) meet Saturday at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ACC Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Georgia Tech vs. Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Yellow Jackets have had a power outage on offense, at least against FBS teams, totaling just 20 points scored in 3 games. It did record a 35-17 win over Western Carolina Sept. 10, but the Catamounts are an FCS program. The Under has cashed in all 4 games for the Ramblin’ Wreck so far.

The defending ACC champion Panthers have rebounded with a pair of wins over Western Michigan and Rhode Island after an OT loss to Tennessee Sept. 10. Unlike the Jackets, Pitt has 27 or more points in all 4 games so far, and the Over has hit in 3 of those outings.

Georgia Tech at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

Pittsburgh 34, Georgia Tech 13

Money line

Pittsburgh (-1800) is a heavy favorite here, and it should easily win its ACC opener. However, you can’t risk 18 times your potential return, as that’s just not a sound long-term betting strategy.

PASS.

Against the spread

GEORGIA TECH +21.5 (-115) is worth playing catching more than 3 touchdowns in this one. Pittsburgh will win and will come close to covering, but the Panthers’ defense can be had. Even the Yellow Jackets might be able to cobble together a little bit of offense to at least keep Pitt within hailing distance.

Over/Under

The UNDER 47.5 (-108) is the best play on the board.

Georgia Tech has a total of 20 points in 3 games vs. FBS opponents. While Pitt doesn’t have a tremendous defense, it’s still hard to see the Jackets rolling up big numbers. The Under is 4-1 in the past 5 meetings in this series, and this one will come in just Under the number, too.

Tennessee at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Tennessee at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Tennessee Volunteers (1-0) and Pittsburgh Panthers (1-0) meet Saturday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Tennessee at Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Volunteers paddled Ball State by a 59-10 count at Neyland Stadium last weekend. Tennessee built a 38-0 lead by halftime, and finished with 218 rushing yards while and 351 passing yards. Tennessee was also plus-2 in the turnover department.

The Panthers received a much sterner test, eventually easing by visiting West Virginia 38-31 in the renewal of “The Backyard Brawl” rivalry. Pitt trailed 31-24 with 10:37 to go, but scored a 24-yard TD pass to tie it with 3:41 remaining, then a pick-6 by DB Marlin Devonshire for 56 yards with 2:58 left.

Pittsburgh has won all 3 meetings in this series, including 41-34 last season in Knoxville. This is the first time Pitt is the home team in this series.

Tennessee at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

Pittsburgh 41, Tennessee 38

Money line

PITTSBURGH (+170) found a way to get it done after trailing late in last week’s opener. The defending ACC champions were tested in a close game, and grabbed a victory.

Tennessee is a road favorite against a ranked team it has never beaten and lost to at home last season. It’s a curious line to say the least. The Vols had an easy time last week with Ball State, and it remains to be seen how they will fare in a close game.

Pitt is being underrated because it struggled against a West Virginia team picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Big 12. But the Panthers are home, and will ease by the Vols just like it eased by the Mountaineers.

Against the spread

PITTSBURGH +5.5 (-108) is a good play at home catching 5½ points. Truth be told, I like the money line much better. But if you don’t trust QB Kedon Slovis – who transferred in from USC – to be as effective as he was last week, take the points, as it is a safer play.

Tennessee is just 2-6 ATS in the past eight tries against ACC teams, and 0-3 straight up all-time vs. Pitt.

Over/Under

OVER 64.5 (-117) seems like a rather high number, but both of these teams have the potential to make this a track meet.

Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker was outstanding last week, albeit against an inferior opponent. He passed for 221 yards and 2 TDs, while running for 2 more scores. That wasn’t an anomaly, though, as he was very special last season as well.

Slovis and the Panthers posted 38 points in their win, and this is setting up to be a rather high-scoring affair with the team holding the ball last getting the video game-like victory.

West Virginia at Pittsburgh odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s West Virginia at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The West Virginia Mountaineers and Pittsburgh Panthers open the 2022 season at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the West Virginia at Pittsburgh odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The “Backyard Brawl” is back, as these 2 schools meet on the gridiron for the 105th time, but the 1st meeting since Nov. 25, 2011, a 21-20 West Virginia win in Morgantown. The last time these schools met in Pittsburgh, the Mountaineers routed the Panthers 35-10 in November 2010.

The Panthers won the ACC Championship Game last season, but lost QB Kenny Pickett, who was a 1st-round draft of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pitt hopes incoming transfer QB Kedon Slovis from Southern California will keep the Panthers on the championship path without skipping a beat.

Pittsburgh is ranked No. 16 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

West Virginia at Pittsburgh picks and predictions

Prediction

Pittsburgh 27, West Virginia 20

Money line

Pittsburgh (-320) is a rather high number, costing you 3 times your potential return. That’s a lot, especially in a much-anticipated return of a rivalry game.

West Virginia (+250) is breaking in a new signal caller, as former USC and Georgia QB JT Daniels takes over. He has the potential to help this offense be much, much better, and the Mountaineers D could give Slovis fits. There is a lot of risk just playing the favorite straight up.

AVOID.

Against the spread

WEST VIRGINIA +7.5 (-112) is the play here, and the 7 with a hook is key. I think Pitt -7.5 (-108) gets it done, but it could be a sloppy game with both teams breaking in a transfer quarterback. Continuity in the 1st game will just not be there, and that’s life in the era of the transfer portal.

Over/Under

UNDER 51.5 (-107) is the play here.

These teams haven’t played in a while, so you can avoid the trend of Under going 4-1 in the last 5 meetings. However, pay attention to the fact West Virginia is 5-1-1 in the last 7 tries against ACC foes.

In addition, Pittsburgh cashed the Under in 4 of its final 5 games last season, and lost its dynamic QB to the NFL’s Steelers. Slovis and the offense could take some time to jell, especially early in this game.

Duke at Pittsburgh odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Duke at Pittsburgh odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 2 Duke Blue Devils (25-4, 15-3 ACC) and Pittsburgh Panthers (11-18, 6-12) tangle 8 p.m. ET Tuesday at Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh. Below, we look at the Duke vs. Pittsburgh odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Duke has lost just once (Feb. 7 vs. Virginia) since falling at Florida State in overtime Jan. 18. The Blue Devils are 11-1 overall and 7-0 on the road over that stretch.

DU is coming off a 97-point performance at Syracuse Saturday where three starters scored 20 or more points for the highest-scoring team in the ACC (80.1 points per game).

The Panthers rank last in the circuit in scoring (62.5 PPG) and have not played since losing 85-64 to Miami (Fla.) last Tuesday. They are 3-6 since Jan. 30.

Pittsburgh snapped a five-game losing skid against Duke the last time these programs met. On Jan. 19, 2021, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Pitt downed Duke 79-73. The Panthers outscored the Devils 24-11 at the free-throw that day.

Duke at Pittsburgh odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Duke 75, Pittsburgh 64

Money line

PASS.

Against the spread

The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a straight-up loss of more than 20 points, and they’re in a likable spot here.

With Duke playing its third straight game away from Cameron Indoor Stadium, peg this contest against mercurial Pitt as having enough of a chance for landing somewhere in the Devils by 10-or-12 range.

TAKE PITTSBURGH +14.5 (-108).

Over/Under

Three out of the last four Pitt home games have hit the Over. Duke has been a solid Over play the last few weeks, and Over tickets have cashed in six of its last eight.

BACK THE OVER 137.5 (-115) on a strong lean.
