Greg Schiano impressed with BC’s Phil Jurkovec: ‘He’s an NFL quarterback’

Greg Schiano is impressed with BC’s quarterback Phil Jurkovec.

For Rutgers football, Saturday’s opener at Boston College is already a difficult challenge. Against a Power Five opponent, and one that has been bowl eligible the past two years under head coach Jeff Hafley, it is far from a gimme game to start the season.

Factor in that Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano sees Boston College quarterback Phil Jorkovec as a future NFL quarterback, and a young Scarlet Knights defense is certainly in for a huge test.

Last season, in a campaign cut short due to injury, Jurkovec threw 914 passing yards, completing 54 percent of his passes. He had seven touchdowns and four interceptions. He has a big arm and at 6-foot-5, 214 pounds has prototypical size.

“Very talented quarterback. He’s an NFL quarterback, which, when you say that, that means a lot to me,” Schiano told reporters on Monday.

“He’s got a big arm. He’s very mobile, very athletic. So when things break down, he extends plays. He doesn’t just run to run. He extends. He extends — has a really good feel for the pocket. A very good presence in the pocket. I know John (Boston College offensive coordinator John McNulty), having worked with John. John is really a good quarterback coach and a guy who makes a quarterback very aware of rush patterns, escapability, how to extend plays. So I’m sure that there will be improvement there as well.”

McNulty, referenced in the above comments about Jurkovec, spent five years under Schiano as part of the Rutgers offensive staff.

In 2020, Jurkovec threw for 2,558 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. Schiano was asked about the quarterback his program will face on Saturday afternoon.

For Rutgers, the hope is that Boston College’s offensive line, which comes into the season opener untested and a bit green, will allow for the Scarlet Knights to dial up the pressure a bit.

Rutgers also returns a secondary that is arguably the strength of the team.

Is any Notre Dame quarterback on Pro Football Focus’ top 50 list?

Which quarterback would you choose?

Heading into the 2022 season, the biggest question mark for the Fighting Irish is who will be the starting quarterback. Gone from last year’s team is graduate transfer [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag], who toward the end of the year really found his stride and made the Irish offense look much more capable.

During the season, both of his backups, [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] and [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag], had considerable looks behind center. Each had bright moments. Although [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has not yet named his starter for the season opener against Ohio State, the presumption is Buchner will take the first snaps against the Buckeyes.

Although this doesn’t confirm the fact that Buchner is the most likely candidate, Pro Football Focus named its top 50 quarterbacks heading into the season and the rising sophomore was ranked 46th.

Buchner is ranked behind former Irish quarterback [autotag]Phil Jurkovec[/autotag], who transferred to Boston College, making everyone wonder what if he had stuck around for his opportunity this season. Either way, Buchner has plenty of room to rise on this list by season end. He was a top-100 prospect coming out of high school.

A big part of Notre Dame’s season will hinge on his play, or potentially Pyne’s or even true freshman [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag], depending on injuries and effectiveness. The most important position in football, and arguably all of sports, will need to step up for the Irish this fall.

Giants land another edge rusher in Tankathon’s 2023 mock draft

In a 2023 NFL mock draft conducted by Tankathon, the New York Giants select edge rusher Myles Murphy and QB Phil Jurkovec.

Mock drafts for the 2023 NFL Draft, anyone? That’s right, they exist, even without a single team reporting for training camp for the 2022 season yet.

The folks at Tankathon already have their early mock in place and the New York Giants are — brace yourselves — selecting in the Top 10 again meaning their in for another losing season in 2022.

Tankathon predicts Big Blue will be selecting ninth overall and taking Clemson’s Myles Murphy, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound prospect who they have ranked as their No. 2 edge rusher.

Unlike this season, when they had two Top 10 picks, the Giants have just one first rounder in 2023.

Other notables taken in the first round of this draft are Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, taken first overall by Atlanta, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, taken third overall by Detroit, and LSU linebacker B.J. Ojulari, the younger brother of Giants’ linebacker Azeez Ojulari. He is projected to be taken by New England at No. 16.

Finally, in Round 2, the Giants select Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec. And interesting and odd pair of projected picks for Big Blue.

Colts grab QB Phil Jurkovec in Touchdown Wire’s 2023 mock draft

Colts grab a QB in Touchdown Wire’s latest 2023 mock draft.

The 2023 NFL draft is still very far away, but our friends over at Touchdown Wire are hard at work preparing for the upcoming offseason and which potential prospects may fit with certain teams.

Even though the Colts are hoping to get multiple years out of Matt Ryan, a quarterback selection in 2023 is still very possible for Indy. Having that player groomed under Ryan is an enticing notion, and Mark Schofield felt that’s the direction the Colts will go in a year from now.

With No. 22 overall pick in the mock draft, the Colts went with Boston College QB Phil Jurkovec. Here’s what Schofield said about the selection:

With the acquisition of Matt Ryan via trade, the Indianapolis Colts are in a position to wait on adding a potential quarterback of the future.

But that does not mean they have to wait.

Before he was sidelined with a wrist injury that required surgery, Phil Jurkovec looked like he would enjoy a draft-season rise of his own last year. But that injury derailed those plans, and when he returned from the injury in November, he struggled in losses to Florida State and Wake Forest. During 2020, however, Jurokvec looked like a potential early-round pick at the position.

The bet here is that he looks much more like the quarterback we saw in 2020, and that the Colts agree and bring him in as their successor to Ryan.

Jurkovec only has one season in college with more than six games played. During that 2020 season, he completed 61% of his passes for 2,558 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of 10 games.

It will be interesting to see how the 2022 season unfolds, but it would be no shock to see the Colts target a quarterback in the next draft.

5 quarterbacks (C.J. Stroud!) worth tanking for in next year’s 2023 NFL Draft

Next year’s QB class is worth all the hype.

The 2022 NFL Draft is finally over.

And while there’s a bunch of analysis to sort through soon, it’s never too early to look ahead. Yes, I’m already talking about the 2023 NFL Draft. Bear with me because one part of next spring’s draft might be especially notable.

Next year will undoubtedly feature another stellar overall class where the many bad teams can sand over their many flaws. But it’s the treasure trove of exceptional quarterbacks who stand out. I would never directly advocate for tanking for a better draft pick (wink, wink), but these guys might change my mind. They could turn an also-ran into a contender overnight.

Something had to balance out the universe after the fall the 2022 QBs endured, right?

From an Alabama star to a Florida project, let’s dive into a few of the bigger names who could comprise next year’s top-tier group of franchise-changing quarterbacks.

13 reasons why Eagles GM will look to trade a 2022 first-round pick for more draft assets in 2023

After hearing his end of the year press conference, here are 13 reasons why #Eagles GM Howie #Roseman will look to trade a 2022 first-round pick for more #NFLDraft assets in 2023

During the 2021 NFL offseason, Howie Roseman was able to trade Carson Wentz and land a pre-draft deal with the Dolphins, resulting in three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, but after listening to his end of the season press conference, Philadelphia’s top decision-maker could have something even more brazen up his sleeves.

The Eagles are technically still in the midst of a rebuild and although they made the postseason, last year was still supposed to be about seeing what they had at quarterback and other key positions.

That press conference, coupled with a lack of star power in the upcoming draft is why the evaluation will continue,  giving Hurts another year as the starter,  but could Roseman move one of his coveted 2022 assets in hopes of greener pastures in 2023?

If Roseman still has dreams of a more conventional superstar passer or a once-in-a-lifetime pass rusher, the 2023 draft could offer at minimum, seven quarterbacks for Philadelphia and other teams to start targeting.

If Philadelphia dreams of an all-world pass-rusher or stud wide receiver, an extra first-round pick would be gold.

Here are some of the top 2023 signal-callers, a star running back, and one all-world edge rusher that could have Roseman waiting patiently for that greener pasture.

Bad news for the Boston College football team, which Clemson will play on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Death Valley.

BC announced on Monday that redshirt junior quarterback Phil Jurkovec will likely miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery today for a right hand injury.

Jurkovec suffered the injury in Boston College’s win over UMass on Saturday.

Last season, he completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,558 yards and 17 touchdowns with five interceptions.

With Jurkovec out, the starting quarterback role figures to fall to redshirt senior Dennis Grosel.

Stock Watch: Mixed quarterback performances mark Week 1 of the college football season

Mark Schofield looks at how some of the top quarterback draft prospects fared in the first full weekend of college football action.

Fans and analysts alike love nothing more than to overreact to the opening slate of games during football season.

Thankfully, the first full weekend of college football action provided ample ammunition for such an exercise.

After a long, and sometimes tedious summer of scouting, fans and analysts got to see the players they spent hours arguing about over the past few month in action over the weekend. As one might expect, that led to a lot of reaction across the football spectrum. Each week here at Touchdown Wire we’ll dive into the play from quarterbacks at the college level and see who helped themselves, and who might need to seek out extra credit opportunities.

Summer Scouting: Boston College QB Phil Jurokvec

Diving into the play of Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec, who could surprise next draft season.

With the 2021 college football season fast approaching the race is on to find the next Joe Burrow. The next Zach Wilson. The next “quarterback riser” to come from virtually nowhere and shock the football world as they rise to the top of the draft board.

Allow me to nominate Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec.

The Notre Dame transfer took over as the starting quarterback for the Eagles and flashed some NFL traits in his first year as a starter. In ten games Jurkovec completed 61% of his passes for 2,558 yards and 17 touchdowns against just five interceptions, but beyond the numbers are the traits he showed on film. We’ll dive into those in this video examining plays against Pittsburgh and Clemson:

https://youtu.be/M1vccTXnkBQ

Now, it might not be time to go “all in” on Jurkovec as that QB riser, especially with other talented quarterbacks in this class such as Malik Willis, Carson Strong and more. But on that betting board it might be wise to at least put a chip or two on that maroon “5” on the board. Jurkovec’s pocket management and competitive toughness are two traits that will serve him well next year…and beyond.

Reload or rebuild for Notre Dame in 2021?

Will Notre Dame have a season where they struggle like in 2016 or will it be a prosperous season like this past season?

The list keeps growing with Notre Dame players making their intentions for next year known, many of them opting to move on instead of come back. Quarterback Ian Book, tackles Liam Eichenberg and Robert Hainsey, guards Tommy Kraemer and Aaron Banks, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, tight end Tommy Tremble, defensive lineman Ade Ogundeji, cornerback Houston Griffith transferring are just a few of the players on the move.

Recently, ESPN took a look at which schools have recruited the best (insider) to have success in 2021 due to their recruiting. Although Brian Kelly’s efforts have been great, they didn’t make the main portion of the article, the Irish were mentioned in the second group of teams.

Being on the list alone is a good omen for Notre Dame, as the list of players moving on that were major contributors from this past season is significant. Luckily, Kelly has done a great job accumulating talent in South Bend, giving hope that 2021 won’t have a similar result as the 2016 season did.

Per the ESPN article, the Irish will have 38 players returning to the 2021 roster at the current moment that were ranked inside their top 300. So what does that mean for the ‘21 season?

There will be some bumps in the road with many of the younger players getting their first significant amount of playing time, but that doesn’t mean it will be all bad. This past year saw multiple freshman (cornerback Clarence Lewis, tight end Michael Mayer, running back Chris Tyree, defensive end Rylie Mills and linebacker Jordan Botelho) each show flashes of their futures. The first three really shined and you can add Jordan Johnson to the list as well.

Second-year players like safety Kyle Hamilton, interior lineman Zeke Correll, defensive lineman Isaiah Foskey, running back Kyren Williams, linebacker Marist Liufau, and punter Jay Bramblett were major contributors. This group will need to continue to grow.

As for the 2018 class which was ranked in as the 10th best class nationally, they have struggled to make a significant mark. Griffith transferring along with quarterback Phil Jurkovec already leaving and wide receiver Kevin Austin unable to stay healthy has hurt the classes outlook. Those three were the top ranked players in the class. There, however, have been contributors from that class, with include linebacker Jack Lamb, wide receiver Braden Lenzy and tight end George Takacs, linebacker Bo Bauer and center Jarrett Patterson. This class needs to step up in a big way for the Irish to be successful this coming season.

I haven’t even touched on the potential incoming-freshman contributors, which include tackle Blake Fisher, wide receiver Deion Colzie, guard Rocco Spindler, quarterback Tyler Buchner, linebacker Prince Kollie and other talented players.

The schedule isn’t quite daunting, the first three games should give Kelly plenty of time to get the pups feet wet before their big contest against Wisconsin in Chicago.

In my opinion the Irish are not rebuilding, but they aren’t quite reloading. Having a regular spring schedule will be extremely important for this team. The reps and practice time will further develop the players who don’t have as much experience. We should not see another year like 2016.
