Trey Augustine eyeing return to MSU hockey for sophomore season

MSU goalie Trey Augustine appears to be eyeing a sophomore season in East Lansing

Trey Augustine made himself a household name for Michigan State hockey this past season. The freshman goaltender was one of the best netminders in the nation, despite being the youngest goalie in the nation. In amazing news for Spartan fans, it appears that Augustine is eyeing a return to East Lansing for his sophomore season.

Augustine was a second round pick by the Detroit Red Wings last season and would have an option to go professional if he, or the organization, wanted him to. It looks like he will be donning the green and white again next season, though.

Detroit fans are so pumped about the Lions that they’re chanting ‘Jared Goff’ at Pistons, Red Wings games

The city of Detroit is having a moment.

This is a huge weekend for Detroit sports fans, and they’re rightfully pumped about it.

For the first time since the 1991 NFL season, the Lions won not only a playoff game but also the division and are one win away from a Super Bowl appearance. They’ll face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game Sunday.

It’s an incredible moment for Detroit, and the Lions’ historic season is impacting the city’s other professional sports teams. For the second time this week, “Jared Goff” chants have broken out at Little Caesars Arena, first during the Red Wings’ 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, as The Athletic‘s Max Bultman reported.

And it happened again Saturday during the Pistons’ 118-104 loss to the Wizards.

In the third quarter as Washington power forward Marvin Bagley III was making two free throws, the crowd at the arena was chanting, “Jar-ed Goff! Jar-ed Goff!”

Following the chants during the Red Wings game, Goff said this kind of hype and excitement isn’t like what he previously experienced with the Los Angeles Rams. But a lot of that is probably because the Lions winning in the playoffs is, historically, a rarer occurrence.

“These fans are unbelievable,” Goff said in a video via ESPN’s Eric Woodyard:

Needless to say, the city of Detroit and its sports fans are ready for Sunday’s NFC championship game.

LOOK: Star Michigan football national championship players visit Detroit Red Wings

This is probably the only time you’ll see these guys wearing red! #GoBlue

It’s good being No. 1. You’re celebrated by the people that matter and reviled by those who hate you and want to be you. When you’re home, you get a lot more of the former than the latter.

Such is the case for Michigan football and some of the players who plan to return to the 2024 iteration of the Wolverines after winning the national championship.

To the victors go the spoils, and the victors valiant are taking full advantage. Michigan natives Donovan Edwards and Will Johnson joined up with Colston Loveland and Rod Moore to visit the Detroit Red Wings game on Thursday evening and were highlighted by the team’s social media all decked out in Wings gear.

This might be the only time while in college you see any Michigan players wearing the color red!

The visit was arranged by Valiant Management and the NIL outfit included more, including video:

Edwards and Moore had been expected to depart for the NFL but instead chose to return for their senior seasons. If they had left, they likely wouldn’t have been around to be celebrated as such as they would have likely been in a different city training for the NFL combine. Of course, Johnson and Loveland have another year to play before they could depart, but it’s still good to see them making the most out of their post-championship season.

The Red Wings are hosting the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday evening.

Patrick Kane signing with the Red Wings makes sense, I guess?

It’s not as big of a move as it seems. Here’s why.

Is it weird to just kind of shrug at the Patrick Kane signing to the Detroit Red Wings?

Maybe. While it makes sense for a variety of reasons, it’s got the chance to not make the impact it would have if it was, say, five years ago.

Why it makes sense, especially for the veteran former Hart Trophy winner: Kane played in Michigan before he was an NHL superstar, it’s close to his hometown of Buffalo, and the assumption is he’ll pair up with Alex DeBrincat, with whom he had some chemistry in Chicago when they were both Blackhawks. Plus, the Red Wings are off to a good start!

While it’s a low-risk move to bring in Kane, here’s why it’s meh: The forward wasn’t very good with the New York Rangers last year, including in a playoffs in which he scored just once. He’s 35 and coming off hip surgery, so who knows how effective he’ll be.

But for a young, emerging Red Wings team, it might be a move that gets them a step closer to the postseason. That’s something! It’s just not a huge, game-changing something, and maybe it would have been a bigger something for a more sure contender.

We’ll see.

Former Michigan State hockey forward Taro Hirose making move at Detroit Red Wings training camp

Taro Hirose is making headway at the Detroit Red Wings training camp:

Former Michigan State star forward Taro Hirose is making a case to play in the NHL. Hirose played and starred at MSU from 2016-19, before signing with the Detroit Red Wings.

Hirose has spent his whole professional career playing in the Red Wings organization, playing in 60 NHL games for the Red Wings, while the rest of the time has been spent with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.

Now, it appears Hirose is skating with the Red Wings third line, a promising sign thus far in training camp.

Detroit Red Wings acquire former Michigan State hockey D Jeff Petry

Former MSU defenseman Jeff Petry is heading home to play for the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have made a huge move, acquiring former Michigan State Spartan defenseman Jeff Petry from the Montreal Canadiens.

Petry spent 2007-2010 patrolling the blue line in East Lansing, being a leading player for Michigan State. Following his time in the green and white, Petry has gone on to have a 14 year career in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadians and Pittsburgh Penguins.

It now appears his 15th season in the league will be spent with his hometown Red Wings.

Michigan State goalie commit Trey Augustine selected 41st overall in NHL Draft

MSU bound goalie Trey Augustine has been selected in the 2nd round of the NHL draft

Michigan State hockey coach Adam Nightingale hit a homerun when he landed United States National Development Team u-18 goaltender Trey Augustine, flipping his commitment in favor of the Spartans over the rival Michigan Wolverines.

The significance of the Spartans netminder in 2023-24 has just been amplified, as the Detroit Red Wings have selected Augustine with the 41st overall pick in the 2nd round of the NHL entry draft.

Augustine will look to be the next great goaltender in Michigan State hockey history.

Red Wings’ David Perron adorably surprised his kids with the pucks from his hat trick

No better way to celebrate a hat trick

Detroit left winger David Perron got to play hero on Tuesday night against his former Pittsburgh Penguins club.

The Red Wings took a 3-0 lead in the first period, gave it all back in the second, watched coach Derek Lalonde get unceremoniously ejected after a ridiculous call and entered the third period on their heels.

Then Perron showed up.

He scored a natural hat trick 13 minutes with his final two goals coming just 45 seconds apart. That gave Detroit a 6-4 lead which a Dylan Larkin empty-netter stretched to 7-4 to seal the victory at Little Caesars Arena.

The eighth hat trick of Perron’s career might end up as one of the most special achievements for him. Not because of how he scored or who it was against, but because of how he got to celebrate when he got home.

Perron posted on Instagram showing he had all the pucks from his tremendous performance lined up on a counter with one for each of his three kids waiting when they wake up.

Well, that’s just the absolute best. Being a parent who is also a professional athlete certainly has its drawbacks, but this isn’t one of them.

We only wish we could’ve seen the look on the faces of Perron’s children when they woke up on Wednesday.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde’s expletive-laden reaction to goalie inference challenge was so relatable

No one knows what goaltender interference is, especially not Derek Lalonde.

Goaltender interference is a toss-up call in the NHL. Much like the NFL’s “what is a catch?” debate, no one really knows how referees will rule on goaltender interference in any given game.

Unfortunately for the Detroit Red Wings, the goaltender interference debacle hit them hard on Tuesday during their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In a crucial moment in the middle of the second period, the Penguins tied the game 3-3 on the power play after Jeff Carter redirected the puck in over the line with Jason Zucker tying up goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic in front.

Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde challenged the play for goaltender interference, but ultimately came up short as the officials ruled it a good goal. While Lalonde’s reaction wasn’t audible on the broadcast, you don’t need to be good at lip reading to understand what he was saying.

Lalonde was even tossed from the game after that expletive-laden reaction to the goaltender interference challenge!

Honestly, I get where Lalonde is coming from. I’ve seen goaltender interference called for less many times over the years and Zucker was right up in Nedeljkovic’s face digging at his pads.

MORE NHL: Wild’s Ryan Reaves wanted stronger smelling salts and he was so not ready for them.

Whether or not this was the right call, the NHL has to be more consistent in ruling on goaltender interference or we may get more reactions like Lalonde’s in the future.

Dylan Larkin absolutely caught fire during NHL All-Star Weekend with 5 goals

Dylan Larkin went OFF.

Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin treated the NHL All-Star Games like any other NHL contests on Saturday.

Catching serious fire for the Atlantic team, Larkin scored an absurd five goals during the day as his conference group won the all-star weekend.

The Atlantic team topped both the Metropolitan and Central conference teams during the NHL’s gathering of its best players, and Larkin had the best day of anyone playing. He even scored a hat trick during the weekend’s final game.

The Red Wings captain has no trouble putting up highlights, and his NHL All-Star weekend will undoubtedly help bolster his case as he tries to secure a lucrative new deal during the offseason when free agency hits.

Wow, Larkin really wasn’t messing around this weekend.

As he proved he’s easily one of the NHL’s most dangerous offensive players, Larkin put on a show for the league’s other teams if the Red Wings choose to let him walk in the offseason.

In short, somebody is going to pay Larkin handsomely this summer.
