Jags Wire’s final 7-round mock draft for 2021 with trades

The Jags in all likelihood will be selecting Trevor Lawrence Thursday night, but they must add some offensive contributors around him, too.

The 2021 NFL Draft is almost here, and for Jacksonville Jaguars fans, it’s arguably the most important in franchise history. Of course, the reason for that is because they are set to acquire a player who some draft experts feel is a generational talent in quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

However, most would agree that picking Lawrence will be the easy part, and more may be riding on the additions made after him, especially with Urban Meyer aiming for the playoffs right away. With that being the case, we went over to Pro Football Focus to fire up their simulator one last time to make the final 2021 Jags Wire mock of the year. Here are the selections we came away with in an attempt to build a strong offensive and defensive group around Lawrence:

2021 NFL draft: Jets among teams to ‘hit it off’ with Penn State TE Pat Freiermuth

Could the Jets target Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth in next week’s draft?

The Jets have more pressing needs than tight end entering the 2021 NFL draft, but that does not preclude Joe Douglas from looking into upgrading at the position.

New York’s tight end duo of Chris Herndon and Ryan Griffin was underwhelming, to say the least, last season. The two — while often misused by Adam Gase and Dowell Loggains — seldom contributed, with Griffin catching just nine passes for 86 yards and Herndon suffering from a bad case of the drops throughout most of the year. The Jets inked Tyler Kroft to a one-year deal to bolster their tight end depth chart in free agency, but another addition could be on the horizon in the form of Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth.

Freiermuth, who is widely considered the second-best tight end in this year’s draft class behind Florida’s Kyle Pitts, recognized the Jets as one of the teams he has “hit it off” with throughout the pre-draft process, according to The Boston Globe’s Trevor Hass. Freiermuth is projected to go off the board at some point during Day 2 of the draft, which could play directly into the Jets’ hands.

Friermuth has a bevy of experience playing as an in-line tight end and as a receiving threat split out wide. Most importantly, he is a willing blocker who has sure hands in the passing game.

The Penn State product does not come without a red flag, though. Freiermuth underwent shoulder surgery in the middle of last season and is still working his way back to 100%. However, that likely wouldn’t be enough to scare the Jets, or any other team, away, as any qualms about the health of his shoulder can be relieved with positive medical reports.

There is a reason the Jets made a run at Jonnu Smith in free agency before he signed with the rival Patriots. Even though New York’s tight end room isn’t in bad shape, Douglas clearly is not entirely satisfied with its personnel.

If he deems that need worth addressing early in the draft, Freiermuth could ultimately be his guy.

Which Penn State players are attending the 2021 NFL Draft in person or virtually?

Two other Nittany Lions will participate in the 2021 NFL Draft through a virtual method.

The NFL draft next week will include three Penn State players attending the draft, whether in person or virtually.

It was previously confirmed that Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons will be attending the 2021 NFL Draft in person. Parsons is widely expected to be a first-round draft pick, and he could even go in the top 10 if things fall into place. Parsons will be one of 13 players attending the draft in person. Other players attending the draft in person this year include Alabama‘s Patrick Surtain II, Mac Jones, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, BYU’s Zach Wilson, Florida‘s Kyle Pitts, and LSU‘s Ja’Marr Chase.

As you can see from the list of draft invitees to attend in person, there are some obvious omissions from the list. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields are among the more notable players who will be watching the draft unfold from the comfort of home, but they will be included in the draft festivities through a virtual format.

Two Nittany Lions hoping to hear their name in the early rounds will also be a part of the draft through a virtual approach. Jayson Oweh and Pat Freiermuth will be among 45 players scheduled to virtually be a part of the draft.

That won’t be the only bit of Penn State flavor in the draft. Former Pittsburgh Steeler and Penn State standout running back Franco Harris will announce a pick for the Steelers on the second day of the draft. Harris will be among the NFL legends making picks for their respective franchises.

Could Harris be announcing a Steelers draft pick of a Nittany Lion? Tune in next week to find out!

Morning mock draft: TD Wire slots first-round TE to Bills

Buffalo Bills select TE Pat Freiermuth in 2021 NFL Draft mock.

One move that has not been considered much for the Buffalo Bills at the 2021 NFL Draft is selecting a tight end with their first-round pick. Much of the Round 1 hype at the position surrounds Kyle Pitts.

The Florida prospect is not going to be on the Bills’ radar because he might be the first non-quarterback picked at the draft. His stock is too high and he’ll be off the board way before Buffalo picks at No. 30.

Beyond Pitts, a name to potentially watch is Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth. Our friend Luke Easterling at Draft Wire put the spotlight on that on Monday, too.

In his latest mock, Buffalo takes Freiermuth with their first-round selection. Here’s the breakdown:

The Bills don’t have too many glaring needs, and I wouldn’t count out a running back, a pass rusher or a corner here. But an upgrade at tight end could be at the top of their priority list when it comes to helping out Josh Allen, and landing a well-rounded prospect like Freiermuth would be a huge boost to both the ground game and the passing attack.

In terms of those around Allen, the tight end position would certainly help the QB the most. There’s an argument that the backfield could use an upgrade, but Freiermuth would bring a playmaking to the tight end spot that the Bills simply lack with Dawson Knox.

But considering Freiermuth’s pre-draft stock, one could see Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane trading back to make this happen. If the Bills could grab an extra pick to move into the early second round in order to take Freiermuth, that might be the ideal situation.

In 2020, Freiermuth, a junior, sited up in four games and had 310 receiving yards and a touchdown. The year prior in 2019 he caught 43 passes for 507 yards with seven touchdowns in 13 games played.

2021 NFL draft profile: Penn State TE Pat Freiermuth

Everything NFL draft fans need to know about Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth

Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth is a traditional, big-frame tight end who can be a decent blocker. He can line up in the slot, or in a two-point stance in the backfield.

In high school, Pat played forward in basketball, and was a linebacker on the other side of the ball for the football team. He received over 20 scholarship offers as a four-star recruit.

He ended his college career with 69 receptions for 875 yards 15 touchdowns in 26 games. He received Second Team All-Big Ten honors in 2019, and was First Team All-Big Ten in 2020, despite playing just four games due to a shoulder injury.

2021 NFL draft: TE options for the Jets in the early, middle & late rounds

A look at three tight ends who could be options for the Jets throughout the NFL draft.

With the 2021 NFL draft now less than a month away, it’s time to dive deeper into Joe Douglas’ plans to upgrade the Jets roster with an influx of young talent.

New York is by no means in bad shape with Chris Herndon, Ryan Griffin, Trevon Wesco and free agent signing Tyler Kroft manning the tight end position. None of those players have staked their claim to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, though, meaning a rookie would have the chance to come in and make an instant impact.

Jets Wire will be taking a look at three realistic prospects at positions of need that the Jets could land, ranging from the early rounds to the later rounds. Let’s take a look at three tight ends who fit that mold.

Which Penn State players appear in CBS Sports’ complete, seven-round NFL mock draft?

CBS Sports published a full seven-round draft pick for the 2021 NFL Draft, and a handful of Penn State players made the list.

Mock draft season is coming down the final stretch of the offseason leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft in Cleveland. Penn State figures to have a handful of players having their names called during the NFL draft, including linebacker Micah Parsons as a lock for the first round and Jayson Oweh having a shot of joining his defensive teammate. But after the first round, just how many Penn State players will be getting that desired call to the NFL?

CBS Sports published a full seven-round mock draft from draft analyst Chris Trapasso to attempt mapping out just how everything will go down, and a grand total of four Penn State players made the cut. But one particular pick may be a bit surprising compared to other mock drafts that have recently been updated.

Below is a look at where the Nittany Lions land in Trapasso’s full mock draft on CBS Sports. Check out the full seven-round mock draft to see what players your favorite NFL team may be picking up along the way.

Pat Freiermuth prefers the path of most resistance

Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth prefers running over people instead of running away from them

There are plenty of athletic pass-catchers at tight end who prefer to use finesse to avoid defenders after the catch.

Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth isn’t one of them.

While he’s plenty athletic himself, Freiermuth prefers to play the game with a more physical, punishing style.
