Patrick Mahomes explains the Chiefs’ bounce-back mindset following losses

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes explains Kansas City’s bounce-back mindset following losses

The ups and downs of an NFL season can challenge a team’s growth and plans for success. The Kansas City Chiefs have dropped a few games over the last few weeks, garnering concern surrounding the team’s mindset as the playoffs quickly approach.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is constantly open to criticism to improve as a player and team. He spoke with reporters on Wednesday during his weekly press conference about the team’s mindset in trying to bounce back from challenging moments or losses.

“Yeah, I think I learned from Coach (Andy) Reid. I mean, you always see him; he’s never too high, never too low,” Mahomes explained. “He’s focused on the task at hand. How can we get into the best position to play the best football we can on that day?

“So that’s how my mindset is: no matter if we win, and everybody loves us, or if we lose, and everybody’s kind of down on us, you just got to focus on how can I get myself better and prepare for that next game. I think if you do that, that puts everything where you can kind of in perspective where you can go out there and just be the best you; you can be.”

The mentality has led to many successful seasons since Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback. Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills is a must-win regarding positioning in the AFC post-season race.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes believes a penalty should’ve been called on hail mary vs. Packers

The Kansas City Chiefs fell short last Sunday against the Green Bay Packers with plenty of controversy at the night’s end. The penalties that weren’t called on multiple offensive possessions are still too obvious to ignore days later.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has usually kept a short memory after a loss as the focus is to prepare for the next team during practice. During his Wednesday press conference, the reigning league Most Valuable Player addressed his feelings on the controversial no-penalty call on his Hail Mary attempt to tight end Travis Kelce.

“Yeah, it’s tough because there’s so many guys that are all in the same area,” Mahomes said. “We talked about [it], and we say, they’re not gonna throw flags, they’re gonna let the guys go out there and play. The one on Trav (was) a little aggressive because the guy [fully] pushed him out of the way. That’s the kind of guy that we want to be in the middle of going up and get the ball. So at some point, there’s got to be a flag, but at the same time, we tell the guys they’re not gonna throw a lot of flags in that situation.”

The Chiefs are moving forward from last Sunday night’s defeat and are focusing on the battle with the Buffalo Bills this Sunday. The sour taste of the loss will be extra motivation at home in front of the many fans of Chiefs Kingdom at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid praised LB Jack Cochrane’s performance vs. Packers

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised linebacker Jack Cochrane’s performance against the Green Bay #Packers in Week 13.

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered multiple injuries throughout Sunday night’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. One of the significant positions affected by the injury hug was the linebacker position, as the team lost another middle linebacker at the start of the night.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared his thoughts on linebacker Drue Tranquill’s injury and the play of backup Jack Cochrane in reliefs during Monday’s weekly Zoom press conference.

“He rotates in during the practice week and will spot Drue (Tranquill); that’s part of what we do,” Reid explained. “He’s very smart, and I thought he did a decent job in there. He made a couple of nice plays for us. I know everybody’s got confidence in Jack (Cochrane), so it’s too bad about Drue.

“He’s been doing a phenomenal job for us and just took a knee to the side of the head. A fast recovery for (Drue Tranquill), we hope. It was a good experience for Jack to get in there and get some extensive playtime. Jack is not just a throw-in there; he does a pretty good job.”

Cochrane finished Sunday night’s game second on the team in tackles with seven tackles in relief of Tranquill. The looming expectation of Nick Bolton returning soon from injured reserve and Tranquill’s process through concussion protocol could affect the team’s plan heading into Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Watch: Pete Carroll still believes Seahawks are a playoff caliber team

Things are looking pretty bleak right now for these Seattle Seahawks.

Things are looking pretty bleak right now for these Seattle Seahawks. If the 2023 NFL Playoffs were to begin today, they would be watching from home rather than participating. Their heartbreaking loss last week to the Dallas Cowboys, combined with their 0-2 record against the Los Angeles Rams and the Green Bay Packers’ recent hot streak has them ranked No. 9 in the NFC. There’s also no relief in sight on the schedule either, as they still have two more games to go in their gauntlet against Super Bowl contenders.

If you’re seeking some positivity, check out head coach Pete Carroll, who told reporters on Friday that he thinks his team is still playoff caliber group. Watch.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid takes accountability for losing time of possession battle vs. Packers

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid took accountability for losing the time of possession battle against the #Packers in Week 13.

Sunday night’s loss to the Green Bay Packers stings more than other defeats for the Kansas City Chiefs because of the missed opportunities, injuries, and no calls on penalties. The home team took full advantage of the Lambeau Field atmosphere, with the offense efficiently moving the ball during critical moments in the game.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid focused on another essential part of the game that may have tilted the Packers’ favor, contributing to the victory. The franchise’s wins leader pointed at Green Bay’s ability to control the game’s pace by winning the time of possession battle. He detailed this thought during the post-game press conference with reporters.

“Yeah, listen, they made plays over there. They [used] the clock,” Reid explained. They were letting it run down to that five seconds and below, and they’re getting first downs. So that becomes part of it; you gotta get off the field on defense, stay on the field on offense, and not shoot ourselves.

“Listen, that’s my responsibility. I mean, for that, we got to be better prepared to take care of that stuff right there, and if you do that, you can win a game. In this league, there’s too much parity; they’re well coached, they have good players, you come out and self-destruct like that in certain areas, then you have a problem.”

The time of possession battle was 30:32 – 29:28, barely in favor of Green Bay, but it was still enough for Reid to emphasize it strongly during his press conference. The Packers’ offense chewed essential minutes on their final drive as the Chiefs attempted a comeback under two minutes and no timeouts.

NFL Power Rankings Week 14: 49ers retake No. 1, Steelers, Chiefs drop off

Here’s how we rank all 32 NFL teams heading into Week 14.

As the man said, to be the man you gotta beat the man – and the San Francisco 49ers just did it with their chest in a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship game. All season the Philadelphia Eagles had been winning close, come-from-behind games – incredibly going 5-0 while trailing at halftime heading into Sunday’s matchup.

However, that run of good fortune came to a definitive end on their home field yesterday when they were totally decimated by the 49ers by a score of 42-19. Naturally, the Niners are once again the No. 1 team in our power rankings. Meanwhile, the Eagles have dropped four spots to No. 5.

At the bottom of our power rankings, the Carolina Panthers still have a very strong case to make for being the worst team in the NFL right now. Then again, at least they were able to score a point this week – which is more than we can say for the New England Patriots, who lost 6-0 to the Los Angeles Chargers. They are now ranked No. 32 on our list.

The team that made the biggest jump this week was once again the Green Bay Packers, who took down the Kansas City Chiefs and have now won four of their last five games, with the last two coming against top-10 teams. As such, the Packers are now in the top-10 themselves. Other teams that took significant steps forward include the Houston Texans, the Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals.

The team that fell off the most this week is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who not only get upset by Arizona, but also lost starting quarterback Kenny Pickett to an ankle injury that may require surgery and will definitely sideline him at least a few weeks. The Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs also suffered serious dropoffs.

As for the Seattle Seahawks, their heartbreaking loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night dropped them to a 6-6 record. That combined with LA’s victory over Cleveland has pushed them out of the NFC Playoff picture for now. However, Geno Smith playing the way he did against a top-five defense inspires some hope after a run of awful offensive performances. So, we only dropped them a couple of spots in our rankings this week.

Here’s how we rank all 32 NFL teams heading into Week 14.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes supports Isiah Pacheco’s fiery energy after ejection vs. Packers

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes supported Isiah Pacheco after his ejection against the #Packers in Week 13

The Kansas City Chiefs’ loss Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers featured plenty of drama and suspense in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The bizarre scene involving running back Isiah Pacheco receiving a crucial penalty for punching a Green Bay player affected the team’s comeback attempt.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes witnessed firsthand the altercation while trying to protect against a potential fumble recovery from Green Bay. After the replay review overturned the Rashee Rice fumble, referees tacked a 15-yard penalty after Pacheco’s punch. During his postgame press conference, Mahomes stood by his starting running back and his passionate responses in games.

“I love the fire from Pop (Isiah Pacheco), man, that gets us going as an offense,” Mahomes said. “Obviously (he) got a flag in this situation. But I mean, we were already in a bad situation. So I never want to take the passion away from the guy. He’ll learn from it. I’m sure he won’t make that mistake again. But that’s the stuff that we need on this team in order to have the success that we want to have.”

Pacheco was ejected from the game’s final minute because of the personal foul penalty, but the infraction didn’t hurt the team’s morale. The second-year running back secured his third career 100-plus-yard rushing game and a touchdown on Sunday night.

5 results Jaguars fans should be rooting for in Week 13

With the Jaguars not playing until Monday, there are a few games that Jacksonville fans should keep an eye on Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will try to improve to 9-3 on Monday night when they play against the Cincinnati Bengals in a Week 13 game.

Before that primetime contest kicks off, most of the rest of the NFL will be in action Sunday. And for a Jaguars team that is in the thick of the battle for top seeding in the AFC playoff picture, there are plenty of games that could impact Jacksonville’s future.

The Jaguars’ spot at the top of the AFC South standings isn’t in jeopardy after they took a two-game lead with a 24-21 win against the Houston Texans last week. Instead, it’s the race for the No. 1 spot in the conference that has Jacksonville’s attention. That seed currently belongs to the Baltimore Ravens, who are on bye in Week 13.

With the Jaguars sitting at home, here are the five results that Jacksonville fans should hope to see Sunday:

Chiefs RB Deneric Prince elevated from practice squad after Jerick McKinnon is ruled out vs. Packers

Chiefs RB Deneric Prince elevated from practice squad after Jerick McKinnon is ruled out vs. Packers

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a late update to their roster ahead of Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers. After trending towards playing this Sunday following yesterday’s practice, running back Jerick McKinnon has been officially ruled out ahead of the team’s travel to Green Bay.

The team reported the update on Saturday as McKinnon continues to deal with a groin injury that held him out of last week’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The veteran running back has typically served as the third down running back on offense this season. He affects the passing game as an essential red zone weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, becoming one of the premier pass-catching running backs in the league during last season’s Super Bowl run.

The Chiefs are elevating undrafted rookie running back Deneric Prince to the active roster from the practice squad to serve as McKinnon’s replacement tomorrow night. The move will likely be for depth as Clyde Edwards Helaire is expected to resume the role as third down running back in McKinnon’s absence.

During the preseason, Prince tallied 89 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries while displaying an ability to return kicks and make tackles on special teams, showing plenty of versatility.
