5-star safety Trey McNutt commits to Oregon Ducks

Dan Lanning lands another top prospect for the Ducks.

Since taking over at Oregon in late 2021, Dan Lanning has cast a net over the country. That net landed another one of the nation’s top prospects on Saturday.

Cleveland (Ohio) Shaker Heights five-star safety Trey McNutt announced his commitment to Lanning and the Ducks. He chose Oregon over Florida, Ohio State, Texas A&M and USC.

The 247Sports Composite Rankings list McNutt as the country’s No. 19 overall prospect, the No. 1 safety, and the No. 2 player in Ohio.

A track standout as well, McNutt is coming off a junior season where he excelled on both sides of the ball.

On defense, he totaled 61 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles. At wide receiver, he finished the season with 611 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Ducks remain hot on the recruiting trail

McNutt’s commitment gives Oregon its second five-star commitment so far this cycle. Five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore, a former LSU pledge, committed to the Ducks on Independence Day.

Prior to McNutt’s commitment, the Ducks’ class ranked just outside the top 10. They now have 15 pledges and a class that currently ranks No. 3 nationally.

The last two cycles have seen Oregon finish with a top 10 class. Their last cycle was the best so far of Lanning’s tenure, finishing No. 4 nationally.

4-star running back Jordon Davison commits to Oregon

A major recruiting win for the Ducks’ class of 2025

Jordon Davison, the prolific running back for the Mater Dei Monarchs (San Ana, Calif.), is headed to Eugene, Oregon.

The four-star talent chose the Ducks over several top-tier programs, including Ohio State, Michigan and Alabama, making his announcement on Friday in San Ana.

It’s another major recruiting victory for head coach Dan Lanning, who is preparing for the Ducks’ first run in the new-look Big Ten. And the praise Lanning received from his newest recruit only brightens the spotlight for the possible commits who are still undecided.

“[Dan Lanning] is probably the coolest head coach I have met so far,” said Davison to On3. “He is for sure gonna win the national championship and he for sure is going to have the players and the coaches to do it.”

In a conference historically known for running the football, adding Davison to the roster is a step in the right direction.

As part of the Monarch offense, the class of 2025 ball carrier has been a shining star among a roster of stars, helping the perennial Super 25 contender stay atop not only a difficult CIF-SS Trinity League but also take on national powerhouses across the country.

The 6-foot Davison has been praised as much for his power running and, when needed, shifty outside breaks as his catching ability. And though his numbers dipped a bit from his sophomore to junior campaigns—mainly on the account of an injury issue in 2023—the overall results have made him one of the more sought-after talents in the class.

While things can always change in the recruiting game, for now, the news only creates more excitement for the future of Duck football — something that Davsion considered in this selection.

“They’re a team on rise. And I have a chance to play early over there and contribute to a national championship.”

Dan Lanning believes California is critical to Oregon’s recruiting success

Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning continues to find success recruiting in the state of California, and that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

The end of the 2023 recruiting cycle saw the Oregon Ducks make one more big move, landing 4-star CB Rodrick Pleasant out from under the nose of Lincoln Riley and USC.

Pleasant is from the Los Angeles area, another big win for Lanning in the state of California – a place he made it quite clear he plans to heavily recruit in while he’s leading the Ducks.

“We’re always gonna play games in California,” Lanning told assembled media on Wednesday. “I think that’s important for us and we always want to find the best players from the West Coast. You know, ultimately, we want to find the best players everywhere, right? But if you can win in your footprint and our footprint, certainly, you know, California is part of that. We want to have success there. And I think this year, we’ve proved that we were able to do that.”

Pleasant is not the first big-time recruit Lanning has landed from California, with 4-star corner Jahlil Florence (San Diego) joining the Ducks in 2022 and 4-star EDGE Matayo Uiagalelei (Los Angeles) coming in 2023 – both picking Oregon over USC.

Lanning’s footprint in California is a huge bonus for the Oregon Ducks and their ability to land high level talent, and continued success on the football field will only help this program’s recruiting going forward under Lanning and his staff.

Dan Lanning explains what he’s learned at Oregon over the past year

Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning learned a lot about recruiting for the Oregon Ducks this year, including what makes the program so special.

Dan Lanning’s first year as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks was an overwhelming success. The team not only contended for a spot in the College Football Playoff for most of the season, their prowess on the recruiting trail will pay off in Eugene for many years.

Lanning admitted he learned a lot in his first season, including what it takes to be a head coach at a program like Oregon and how it’s not always easy to make the right decisions.

“I think you learn lessons every every year,” Lanning told assembled media on Wednesday. “It takes the right person, you know, to come here and be in Oregon, right? This is a prideful program that provides a lot of opportunity and resources for people to be great. But sometimes you have to step on a limb you know, to make that happen. It’s not always going to be the closest most convenient option but a lot of times it’s going to be the best option.”

Lanning continued Oregon’s string of recruiting the best class in the Pac-12, making it five straight years after securing a top ten class in 2023.

The head coach wasn’t shy about expressing how dynamic his program can be, and his belief that this team can sell anyone on the opportunity to come to Eugene and don the green and yellow at Autzen Stadium.

“Oregon is an opportunity that a lot of people want to be a part of,” Lanning continued. “And they see the innovation they see what exists here and makes this place so great. And that’s what excites me. I feel like we can go anywhere in the nation and go get the best players when people see this for the right thing.”

So far so good for Lanning, who will get a chance to run it back with Heisman Trophy candidate Bo Nix as well as an extremely talented recruiting class for the 2023 season.

2022 JUCO Player of the Year Sean East considers transfer to Oregon Ducks

Oregon joins Kentucky, BYU, Missouri, Clemson, and South Florida inside the top-6 for Junior College Player of the Year Sean East.

[jwplayer JZZV0Gyb]

On April 1, point guard Sean East was named the 2021-2022 NJCAA-Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, an award given annually to the top Junior College player in the country.

That same day, East revealed his top-6 schools, which included Oregon, Kentucky, Clemson, Missouri, South Florida, and BYU.

East is working on scheduling a visit to Eugene, according to a report from Matt Prehm at 247Sports, having previously visited BYU and Missouri with a trip to South Florida already on the calendar.

East averaged 20.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists last season at John A. Logan Junior College in Texas. He dropped 43 points in John A. Logan’s only game in the National tournament.

East is a 6’3 point guard from Kentucky. He signed with UMass as part of the 2019 recruiting class and averaged 9.3 points and 4.9 assists for the Minutemen as a freshman before transferring to Bradley for the 2020-21 season. There, he averaged a similar 9.0 points and 3.2 assists before settling at the junior college ranks last season.

Now, he could potentially join an Oregon recruiting class that is top-15 in the country and includes two other elite junior college talents in Tyrell Williams and Brennan Rigsby.

On April 30, two-dozen of the biggest high school basketball stars will gather in Memphis to participate in the Iverson Classic – a prominent showcase event put together by NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson.

A pair of players from Oregon’s 2022 recruiting class are set to participate in the event – guard Dior Johnson and center Kel’el Ware.

[lawrence-related id=17395]

Johnson (4) and Ware (10) are both five-star recruits rated inside the top 10 in their class according to 247Sports, giving Dana Altman some incredible reinforcements as soon as next season.

Johnson has drawn comparisons to Sacramento’s De’Aron Fox for his instincts, athleticism, and finishing ability around the rim. He committed to Oregon out of Southern California, fending off offers from big-name schools like Syracuse, Arizona State, and Alabama.

Ware is from Little Rock, Arkansas and was wooed heavily by Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Kansas, Memphis, and many others before deciding to head to Eugene.

While Johnson and Ware will be teammates for at least one season starting next year, they will be facing each other in the Iverson Classic – with Johnson on Team Loyalty against Ware and the rest of Team Honor.
