Snap count notes and observations from the Browns’ Week 4 win over the Cowboys

The Browns had 8 ironmen playing every available snap

There are some tired bodies in the Cleveland Browns training room after Sunday’s 49-38 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The snap counts and playing times for the Browns in the Week 4 win show a lot of reps for many players on both sides of the ball.

The Browns had 75 snaps on offense and 82 total on defense. That’s the most snaps the offense has played through four weeks and the second-most the defense has played, behind the 92 in the Week 2 win over Cincinnati.

Five Browns played all the offensive snaps, while three went all the way on defense. On offense, it was QB Baker Mayfield and four of the five starting offensive linemen. Right tackle Jack Conklin sat out four plays, replaced by Chris Hubbard.

Defensively, safety Andrew Sendejo and corners Denzel Ward and Terrance Mitchell were on the field for every rep. That’s an impressive showing from Ward, who was questionable for the game with a groin injury.

Olivier Vernon was also questionable and had missed two weeks in a row, but the veteran DE played 65 snaps. That’s more than fellow DE Myles Garrett (60) and Vernon’s replacement during his absence, Porter Gustin (41).

Rookie linebacker Jacob Phillips saw 17 snaps in his return to action, 10 less than Mack Wilson. B.J. Goodson (64 snaps) was the only LB on the field for more than half the game.

On offense, running back D’Ernest Johnson only played 17 reps but saw the ball on 13 of those. He played in place of Nick Chubb, who left the game after just 14 snaps with his knee injury. Kareem Hunt led the RB group with only 26, while Dontrell Hilliard chipped in 15 in a true RB-by-committee game.

Rookie tight end Harrison Bryant continues to grow, as reflected by his 52 snaps. With Austin Hooper playing 63, that’s a lot of two-TE sets. Fellow rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones made his WR debut with 33 reps, behind Odell Beckham Jr. (58) and Jarvis Landry (57).

Cowboys Inactives: Tyron Smith officially in, Browns Vernon to play

The seven-time Pro Bowler is back in action for Dallas ahead of a tough matchup.

The Dallas Cowboys will have their left tackle back in a crucial matchup with one of the game’s best pass rushers. A day after losing La’el Collins for the season, Tyron Smith will put the uniform back on for the first time since Week 1, allowing Dallas to at least have one of their stalwarts to face off against Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns.

Dallas has announced their inactives list for the week and Smith is not on it. The Cowboys will have four active tackles for the game, with Brandon Knight, Terence Steele and Eric Smith available as well. Dallas will also have promising UDFA linebacker Francis Bernard active, after he was elevated to the active roster on Friday. It will be interesting to see if the youngster from Utah will see any defensive action, or just play on special teams.

Last week, Joe Thomas and Jaylon Smith played all of the defensive snaps.

As for the Browns, most of their questionable guys will give it a go, including defenders Olivier Vernon and Denzel Ward.

Cleveland Browns inactives for Week 3 vs. Football Team

Denzel Ward and Adrian Clayborn are active

Kevin Stefanski and the Cleveland Browns have chosen their game day inactive list of players for the Week 3 matchup with the Washington Football Team. And the good news is cornerback Denzel Ward isn’t one of the six inactives.

Ward was questionable for the game with a groin injury suffered Thursday. He is active, as is DE Adrian Clayborn, who was also questionable for the game.

The Browns had ruled out Olivier Vernon, Greedy Williams and rookie LB Jacob Phillips on Friday’s final injury report. They are joined on the inactive list by three offensive players:

  • WR Rashard Higgins
  • WR Donovan Peoples-Jones
  • OL Evan Brown

Undrafted rookie CB A.J. Green was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday to help with the injuries in the secondary.

Daily Fantasy: The one Browns player you need to start in Week 3 on DraftKings

With the Washington’s pass protection not up to par, the Cleveland Browns defense and a special team is a must-start in Week 3 on DraftKings.

The Cleveland Browns are looking to build on their Week 2 success and the key to keeping the good vibes going is a Washington offense that is allowing a pressure rate of 28% on offense, something that should allow Myles Garrett and the Browns defense to feast in the Sunday matchup.

The Cleveland defense and special teams are the best Browns to start in Week 3 on DraftKings. The Washington Football team has allowed a sack on 9.9 percent of their passing plays so far this season, the third-highest mark in the NFL, and that was before losing Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff to injury.

After playing well in spurts against the vaunted Ravens offense, Cleveland will face a more inexperienced offense in Washington, that’s still working to develop continuity and an identity outside of Terry McLaurin.

For their part, the Browns have recorded a pressure on 28.6 percent of opposing dropbacks (No. 6 in the NFL), and with the Cleveland offense starting to find an identity with their two head monster at running back, the home team could find an early rhythm that forces The Football Team to turn into a one-dimensional passing offense.

That would allow Myles Garrett, Sheldon Richardson, and Larry Ogunjobi to pressure Dwayne Haskins, causing errant throws or much-needed sacks.

Browns injury update: Jack Conklin back but limited, Olivier Vernon still out

Conklin said he’ll be 100% by Sunday

There was some good news and optimistic vibes coming from the Cleveland Browns team practice in Berea on Wednesday. Starting right tackle Jack Conklin was back at practice. And while his official status for the day’s session was limited, Conklin is confident he will play Sunday against the visiting Football Team.

“(The) ankle’s feeling great,” Conklin said on his Zoom call before practice.  “I’ll be back to 100% this week, rolling.”

Conklin was among several Browns who were limited participants on Wednesday. He was joined by:

  • CB Kevin Johnson
  • C JC Tretter
  • CB Greedy Williams
  • LB Mack Wilson

Three Browns sat out completely: LB Jacob Phillips and DEs Adrian Clayborn and Olivier Vernon. Phillips and Vernon missed the Week 2 win over Cincinnati, while Clayborn left in the first half and has not returned to action since.

Remembering the Giants’ biggest training camp fights from recent years

As the New York Giants ready themselves for the first padded practice of the year, here’s a look back at some of their biggest camp fights.

The New York Giants will put on the pads for the first time on Monday, which means tempers are likely to flare and fists may begin to fly.

That may sound dramatic, but it’s just the nature of NFL training camps. And when considering the Giants will also hold intrasquad scrimmages once per week, it seems almost inevitable that a few punches will be thrown.

With that in mind, here’s a look back at some of the biggest and most memorable Giants training camp fights from recent years.

2019: Lorenzo Carter vs. Nick Gates

The Giants didn’t do much fighting in 2019, but there were a few dust-ups.

One such incident came last August when linebacker Lorenzo Carter and offensive lineman Nick Gates got into a bit of a scrap.

While neither player swung at the other, there were a few shoves before teammates swarmed and pulled the two apart.

Madden 21 ratings for the top 10 Browns leaked

The upcoming Madden 21 ratings for the 10 highest-rated Cleveland Browns have been leaked out

The newest version of Madden will be released in August. Despite game developer EA Sports never actually making the game better, they still change the ratings each season to keep us hooked. They are gradually releasing the ratings of players, but the top 10 from every team is already leaked.

Here are the top 10 Browns in initial Madden 21 ratings:

Myles Garrett- 93 overall: This is a fair rating for Garrett as he will be in the 90 club. Garrett made a 2-point jump from last year’s initial ratings. The newly-extended $125 million man has an undeniably dangerous mixture of acceleration and speed which will be no doubt high ratings as well.

Nick Chubb- 92 overall: This high of a rating was a tad shocking as Chubb was the recipient of a generous seven-point rating boost from last season’s version. This rating ties Chubb for the third-highest back with Ezekiel Elliott. Chubb is also rated higher than Dalvin Cook and Saquon Barkley.

Chubb’s rating is officially confirmed:

Odell Beckham Jr.- 91 overall: Apparently the crew at EA Sports did not like what they saw from Beckham, because they stole five points from the electric receiver’s 2019 rating. This to me is insane as Beckham is clearly an elite weapon and he’s healthy now after playing hurt last year.

Austin Hooper- 89 overall: The newly acquired Hooper received a nice bump of four rating points from last year’s version and rightfully so given his fantastic season. Hooper had excellent acceleration for the position in last year’s version and it will be interesting to see if that gets a bump as well.

Kareem Hunt- 87 overall: It feels like Madden might have screwed Hunt a bit here to make Chubb look better. They stole three points from his overall rating in last year’s version. I am not sure what Hunt could have possibly done more of in his brief showing last season to warrant a higher rating.

Denzel Ward- 86 overall: Ward is another Brown who looks to be unfairly rated as he lost two points from his last year’s version. Ward struggled early last season due to injury, but he finished the year strong and deserves more credit.

Joel Bitonio- 86 overall: Again another shocking diss, Bitonio is an All-Pro caliber performer and did nothing to warrant the loss of a rating point from his last year’s version.

Jarvis Landry- 85 overall: This is an appropriate bump. Landry was given an extra rating point from last year. The obvious number two receiver in an explosive virtual offense, Landry doesn’t have elite physical traits but is still great.

Olivier Vernon- 82 overall: This rating also feels accurate as it is the exact same rating Vernon received last season. He had a solid season before he got hurt, especially considering the added attention with the loss of Garrett.

Sheldon Richardson- 81 overall: Another Browns player screwed by the critics at EA Sports, Richardson lost three rating points compared to last season. Although he did not have the most statistically pleasing 2019, losing so many points feels unfair.

Browns rework Olivier Vernon’s contract

Vernon will now get $11 million in guaranteed money and will be a free agent in 2021

The Cleveland Browns and veteran EDGE Olivier Vernon have agreed to restructure Vernon’s contract.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, Vernon will receive $11 million in guaranteed compensation for 2020, including a $4 million signing bonus and a new salary of $6.75 million. Previously, Vernon was on the books for $15.2 million, but none of that figure was guaranteed.

The team also included a no-tag clause in the new deal that will guarantee that Vernon, 29, will become an unrestricted free agent following the season.

Vernon notched 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks in his first season with the Browns after being acquired in a trade from the New York Giants. He missed six games with injury, a recurring theme for Vernon over the last few seasons.

The move, coupled with the off-season addition of Adrian Clayborn, effectively closes the door on the Browns’ well-documented pursuit of free agent Jadeveon Clowney.
