LSU, Ole Miss seek to stay in SEC race during Week 5 matchup

Ole Miss and LSU both suffered an early loss, and now the two meet in Oxford with SEC title hopes in the balance. The matchup highlights our Week 5 games to watch in the SEC.

As the 2023 college football season matures, so does our understanding of the pecking order in the SEC. Week 4 offered up a few narratives, but it was more notable for the ones it crushed.

Is Alabama truly on the decline? Well, Nick Saban’s program may not be as staunch a title contender as yesteryears, but the Crimson Tide clearly aren’t about to roll over and surrender the SEC West after a resounding home win over Ole Miss.

Is LSU the second-best team in the conference? Maybe still, but not as emphatically as they were a week ago after they needed a field goal in the final seconds to stave off Arkansas.

What games in Week 5 could change how we see the SEC? Here are the most likely candidates.

College Football Week 4 Winners and Losers: Nick Saban puts Lane Kiffin in his place, Notre Dame misses colossal opportunity

Though it wasn’t quite as compelling a slate as we though coming in, there’s still plenty we can glean from Week 4 in college football.

Everyone from college football casuals to hard-core fans had Week 4 circled as a can’t-miss slate of games.

With six matchups between ranked opponents on tap, we certainly got our fair share of excitement. Unfortunately, most of those games didn’t prove to be particularly compelling, and we don’t seem to have many more answers about the sport’s balance of power following the week’s conclusion.

Still, as we do every week here at For The Win, we’ll do our best to contextualize the weekend, from the top-10 matchups to lower-level wackiness. Here are the winners and losers from Week 4 of the college football season.

Former Ole Miss WR A.J. Brown loses bet to Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith

With Alabama’s win over Ole Miss, Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith made former Rebels WR A.J. Brown rep some Crimson Tide gear.

The Philadelphia Eagles have never been shy about their affinity for the Crimson Tide. The franchise has stocked up on some of the program’s brightest stars through multiple drafts.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver DeVonta Smith were both drafted to the Eagles out of Alabama and made a bet with their fellow Philadelphia teammates and Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown.

With the Rebels losing, Brown had to sport an Alabama Crimson Tide hoodie, which he did not seem too happy about. The Eagles shared a video with the final score of the SEC contest on their social media.

Throwback Thursday: DeVonta Smith’s incredible performance vs. Ole Miss in 2019

Who remembers this record-breaking performance?

[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide are now just a couple of days away from their 2023 SEC opener inside Bryant-Denny Stadium against [autotag]Lane Kiffin[/autotag] and the Ole Miss Rebels.

Alabama and Ole Miss has annually been an exciting matchup, but with Kiffin now in Oxford, a little extra flavor has been added to the series.

On this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday, we look back at one of Alabama’s greatest single-game performances and we don’t have to dig too deep to find it.

In 2019, wide receiver [autotag]DeVonta Smith[/autotag] put together a recording-breaking performance against the Rebels, hauling in 11 catches for 274 yards and five touchdowns in Alabama’s 59-31 victory over Ole Miss.

Below are Smith’s highlights from his epic display of talent!

Alabama will host Ole Miss this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS. Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for continuous coverage leading up to the crucial SEC West matchup.

What Alabama football fans need to know about the Ole Miss Rebels

What Alabama football fans need to know about the Ole Miss Rebels

One of the more intriguing matchups in Week 4 of the 2023 college football season will take place inside Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa as [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide play host to Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels.

To help Tide fans get to know the Ole Miss program a little more, I reached out to Steven Willis of the “Locked On Ole Miss Podcast” for a deep dive into Lane Kiffin, and the 2023 Rebels football team.

Steven would touch on a variety of topics including quarterback Jaxson Dart, Pete Golding’s defense, and even the Ole Miss specialists.

Alabama football held players-only meeting to address issues

After an ugly win against USF, Alabama had a players-only meeting to discuss the team’s problems.

Alabama football ranks No. 13 in the nation with a 2-1 record. The hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff have dwindled significantly and it seems like any changes to the team are done in the interest of damage control. Unless something drastic changes, like the mentality of the team.

Well, Crimson Tide offensive lineman Tyler Booker revealed on Next Round Live that the team held a players-only meeting to address the issues the team is having.

Former USC QB Jaxson Dart takes a forward step in Ole Miss win at Tulane

Ole Miss has a few high-profile transfer QBs. Dart clearly leads the pack after this game.

Former USC Trojan Jaxson Dart is trying to catapult his career to a higher plane. The Ole Miss quarterback accounted for 308 yards and passed for two touchdowns on Saturday, as No. 20 Ole Miss pulled away to beat No. 24 Tulane 37-20. This game could improve his confidence this season.

Third-year sophomore Kai Horton was the surprise starter for Tulane. Horton made his second career start in Michael Pratt’s place with a knee injury. Pratt was a surprising scratch just before kickoff. Horton completed 15 of 37 passes for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Former USC head coach Lane Kiffin, now at Ole Miss, moved up a few spots in the polls after a solid road victory over a good Tulane team which beat USC in the Cotton Bowl last January.

The Rebels will take on Georgia Tech (1-1) at home next week in a trap game.

It is safe to say that Jaxson Dart is clearly the starter at Ole Miss over transfers Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard this season. That debate has been put to bed.

Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss puts up huge numbers in 2023 season opener

The former USC QB was smooth in his season opener, but that was a cupcake game. We’ll learn a lot more on Sept. 9 vs Tulane.

Former USC Trojan quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 22 Ole Miss routed FCS visitor Mercer 73-7 in the Rebels’ season opener Saturday in Oxford, Miss.

Tre Harris, in his first game at Ole Miss, set a single-game program record with four receiving touchdowns. The Louisiana Tech transfer finished with six catches and 133 yards. He formed a very potent and effective tandem with Dart, who looked comfortable in the first game of a prove-it season for himself and the Rebels.

Ole Miss (1-0) racked up 667 yards of total offense and scored on all but two possessions.

Mercer (1-1), ranked No. 22 in the AFCA poll of FCS schools, scored on its first offensive snap, a 75-yard run by quarterback Carter Peevy. The Bears finished with 237 yards of total offense, including 138 from Peevy on 16 of 29 passing.

Jaxson Dart is a Utah native and a former National Gatorade Player of The Year. Dart has his work cut out for him next week in a tough matchup.

The No. 22 Rebels visit No. 24 Tulane on Sept. 9 in a nonconference top-25 headliner. We will know more about Dart and Ole Miss after this coming weekend.

Lane Kiffin’s very good dog Juice retrieved the kickoff tee during Ole Miss’ home opener

Juice Kiffin the dog is a very, very good boy.

On a day full of outstanding football plays, none stood out more than a very good boy going to retrieve a kickoff tee during Ole Miss’ 73-7 home victory against Mercer on Saturday.

Yes, it would be Juice Kiffin the yellow Labrador Retriever, a wonderful dog that just so happens to belong to Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, that retrieved the tee at midfield and brought it back to the sideline like the bestest boy he is.

This is the kind of performance that should get him in pads and on the field like Buddy the dog in the film Air Bud: Golden Receiver, where the dog gets to play little league football with humans because why not.

To make this even cooler, Juice Kiffin comes from the prestigious Wildrose Kennels in Mississippi, which makes the good boy very adept to retrieve things.

This is A+ dog fetching, and hopefully Juice Kiffin got plenty of cookies on the sideline for being such an amazingly good boy.

Like, seriously, what a great dog. Good Juice! Good Juice!
