Oklahoma pitcher Jordy Bahl expected to play in WCWS

2022 Freshman of the Year Jordy Bahl will be back for the WCWS, according to Head Coach Patty Gasso.

The already stacked Oklahoma Softball pitching staff will be getting some additional firepower for the Women’s College World Series, which begins this week.

Coach Patty Gasso said on Wednesday that Bahl will pitch at some point this week, but didn’t give up much more than that.

Bahl was recently named the National Freshman of the Year. Gasso has had the young flamethrower on ice since early May due to what was called “soreness.” Bahl has not pitched since May 6 against Oklahoma State.

The former No. 1 recruit in the nation has been as advertised since coming to Norman, rocking a 0.95 ERA, and 199 strikeouts in 132 innings pitched.

We don’t know exactly when Gasso will give Bahl the nod to get back in the circle, but we definitely should see her at somepoint this week.

In the first part of the WCWS, the Sooners will be in a bracket with No. 5 UCLA, No. 9 Northwestern and a familiar foe in Texas. The Longhorns handed the Sooners one of their two losses in the regular season which ended OU’s winning streak dating back to last season.

Florida, Oregon State, Oklahoma State and Arizona make up the remaining four teams in the WCWS. The Big 12 and Pac-12 both sent three teams to the WCWS with the Big 10 and SEC both sending one.

Two playoffs, one round: Wild finishes highlights third round of the women’s NCAA Championship

The PGA Championship wasn’t the only golf tournament to end in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The three-hole playoff that earned Justin Thomas his second PGA Championship win was entertaining, but did you know there was another golf tournament happening on Sunday that featured not one, but two playoffs?

Welcome to the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship.

After the completion of Sunday’s third round at Grayhawk Golf Club, Wake Forest and South Carolina were tied for the 15th and final spot in Monday’s final round of stroke play, setting up a five-player playoff to decide who advances. Each player played a different hole, and it was Louise Rydqvist’s birdie that was the deciding factor in the Gamecocks’ one-shot playoff victory. Following Monday’s final round, the top eight teams will advance to match play, starting Tuesday.

But that’s not all. The top nine players not on an advancing team get a shot at the final round, and after 54 holes a 5-for-2 playoff was needed to decide the advancing individuals, as well. Michigan’s Hailey Borja was the first to punch her final round ticket with a par on the tricky 10th hole – the most-difficult hole of the day and second most-challenging of the week – leaving a 4-for-1 playoff for the final spot. Oklahoma State’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard then made birdie on the 18th hole to end the long day in the desert.

Leaderboards: Team | Individual

At the top of the leaderboard, Stanford increased its lead to nine shots after shooting the low round of the day a tournament, a 5-under 283.

“I think we’re just really patient. I mean most of the birdies came right there in the last couple of holes,” said head coach Anne Walker, who praised the way her star players Rose Zhang and Rachel Heck have played this week. Zhang leads in the race for individual medalist honors at 9 under following a 3-under 69 aided by birdies on her final three holes.

“And then Sadie Engelmann, that’s probably one of the best rounds of golf I’ve since at play in her time here at Stanford,” Walker continued. “She looked like a total boss lady out there and no matter what her outcome was going to be, the fact that she handled herself like an absolute boss lady was so cool.”

Cool indeed, seeing as its rare when the player in the fifth spot ties for the second-best team score of the day, a 2 under 70 to tie Heck.

“I don’t consider any of them fifth-spot players, quite frankly. We don’t look at any of them from a fifth spot, third spot, first spot situation,” explained Walker. “We just look at everyone like everyone’s going out there with the same golf course. These are all super experienced players, so it doesn’t surprise me that when I see a Sadie Engelmann pop up with a 2 under.”

The performance of the day came from Georgia’s Jenny Bae, who fired the low round of the tournament thus far with a 5-under 67. Bae was bogey-free the entire round before her lone blemish came on her final hole of the day.

“My confidence is definitely up there,” said Bae, who after starting 6-over through six holes on Friday is 8 under over her last 48 at Grayhawk. “I think I’m just gonna use whatever I felt today and the momentum and carry it on to tomorrow.”

Oklahoma Sooners awarded No. 1 seed in NCAA Regionals

Oklahoma Softball was awarded the no. 1 seed in the NCAA Softball tournament and will open up with a game against the SWAC Champion PVAMU Panthers

The Oklahoma Sooners were selected as the number one seed in the NCAA Softball tournament and will host Regionals in Norman at Marita Hynes Field. Their first opponent in the tournament will be the Southwestern Athletic Conference Champion, the Prairie View A&M Panthers.

The other two teams in the Norman Regional will be the Big Ten’s Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Texas A&M Aggies of the SEC.

On the other side of the bracket, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, coming off of a Big 12 Championship, were awarded the no. 7 seed and will also host their Regional in Stillwater. They will open against Fordham with North Texas facing Nebraska in the other matchup of round one.

As of now, Big 12 Freshman of the Year Jordy Bahl is “day to day” according to Coach Patty Gasso. Bahl missed the entire Big 12 tournament due to arm soreness. This isn’t something to panic over but is still a cause for concern for the best pitching staff in the nation.

Oklahoma celebrates following the Big 12 Softball tournament game between the Oklahoma and Iowa State at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Friday, May 13, 2022.

The first pitch for OU vs. PVAMU will happen at 6:30 CST on May 20. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on the local radio station 107.7 “The Franchise.”

It will be interesting to see how the Sooners rebound after losing the Big 12 Championship in extra innings.

Oklahoma Sooners lose 4-3 to Oklahoma State Cowgirls in Big 12 championship game

Oklahoma State won their first Big 12 title by knocking off the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners 4-3 in extra innings.

One of the greatest regular seasons in NCAA Softball seasons will not include a conference championship win.

The Oklahoma Sooners were defeated in the Big 12 Championship Game 4-3 by the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in extra innings.

The Sooners got on the board first with two runs in the third inning. Oklahoma State wouldn’t waste time answering. They’d put two on the board to tie the game and displayed incredible patience all afternoon, making the Sooners pitching staff work.

Nicole May got the start and was solid to begin the game. While walking three, she struck out three and allowed a pair of runs in 4.2 innings of work. Hope Trautwein came in for relief in the fifth and struggled.

Trailing in the bottom of the fifth, Jocelyn Alo hit a solo shot to tie the game and give the Sooners a bit of life. Oklahoma State’s pitching and defense kept the Sooners from getting on the scoreboard over the final three innings to win their first Big 12 softball championship.

Trautwein walked three and allowed two runs over 3.1 innings and allowed two runs, including what would be the game-winner, a bunt with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth.

Jordy Bahl was notably absent during the Big 12 tournament. Coach Patty Gasso says it’s due to “arm soreness” and didn’t seem overly concerned, but no timetable has been given for Bahl’s return. Gasso took this as an opportunity to rest her true freshman starter and give Hope Trautwein and Nicole May an opportunity to lead for the Sooners.

Oklahoma State is a top 10 team in the nation for a reason and like the Sooners were at the end of the regular season, the Cowgirls were the better team in the title game.

Despite the loss, this season is far from over for the no. 1 team in the nation.

Selections for NCAA Regionals will happen tomorrow. Even without the Conference Championship in hand, should still go into the tournament as the No. 1 seed.

The No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners play No. 7 Oklahoma State in the championship game of the Big 12 tournament on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Oklahoma Sooners got a fantastic start from Hope Trautwein in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament, throwing a complete game shutout where she struck out 14 Iowa State Cyclones on the afternoon. Lynnsie Elam provided the offense with a grand slam to send the Sooners to the championship game to face off against Bedlam rival Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State dispatched the only team to hand the Oklahoma Sooners a loss, the Texas Longhorns. The Cowgirls picked up the 6-1 win with Morgan Day leading the way with a complete game to finish the Longhorns’ Big 12 season. Oklahoma State went 4-0 against Texas this season and improve to 40-12 on the year.

With Jordy Bahl doubtful for Saturday’s matchup, it’s Bedlam for the Big 12 that will likely feature Nicole May in the circle for the Sooners and USA Softball National Player of the Year Finalist Kelly Maxwell pitching for the Cowgirls.

Oklahoma completed the three-game sweep of Oklahoma State to win the Big 12 regular season title for the 10th straight season. The Sooners outscored the Cowgirls 18-4 last weekend.

Jocelyn Alo named Big 12 Player of the Week after powerful Bedlam performance

For her efforts against Oklahoma State, including a go-ahead grand slam to complete the sweep, Jocelyn Alo won Big 12 player of the week.

The Oklahoma Sooners closed the regular season in dramatic fashion in the final game of their series with rivals Oklahoma State.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Sooners were struggling to get anything consistent going against Cowgirls ace Kelly Maxwell. But that all changed in the fifth frame.

Maxwell struggled with control issues with the top of the lineup coming to bat. She hit two batters and walked another to load the bases for the reigning, defending, national player of the year and [autotag]Jocelyn Alo[/autotag] made her pay with the fifth grand slam of her career. That’s all the Sooners pitching staff would need the rest of the way as they kept Oklahoma State scoreless the rest of the way.

In her final regular season game at Marita Hynes Field in Norman, Alo came through in the clutch like she has so many times in her Sooners career. For her efforts, Alo was named Big 12 player of the week. It’s the seventh time in her career that she’s won the honor.

Alo hit .444 in the series with one home run, six RBIs, and three runs scored. She was walked twice and held a .545 on-base percentage and slugged .778, totaling seven bases.

Alo was a top 10 finalist for the USA Softball National Player of the Year award and is the favorite to take home the honor once again in 2022.

The Sooners head into the Big 12 tournament the No. 1 seed and await the winner of Baylor vs. Iowa State Friday at 1 p.m. CST.

Oklahoma Softball beats Kansas in 19-0 win, picks up another Big 12 series

Oklahoma Softball picked up a 19-0 win over Kansas led by three home runs and 4 shutout innings from Hope Trautwein.

It’s been a busy day for University of Oklahoma Athletics. Of course, I’m referring to the absolute domination of a victory that happened in Lawrence on Saturday.

Oklahoma Softball smoked the Kansas Jayhawks on the road in a run-rule 19-0 win. OU scored 12 runs in the fifth and final inning of the game.

Throw another win on the pile for redshirt senior Hope Trautwein as she is now 13-0 on the season. After four innings, sophomore Nicole May came in for the fifth and finished the job.

Jocelyn Alo simply cannot be stopped.

The Jayhawks walked her four times, and Alo still collected a hit and four runs. The one hit? A two-run homer.

The Sooners continue to show that they not only have the best pitching in the country, but also the best bats. The Crimson and Cream smashed another three home runs today. Lynnsie Elam and Tiare Jennings also went yard.

After dropping their first game of the season to Texas, OU has rattled off six straight wins. Three of their last four have been by run-rule and four straight have been shutouts. It feels like we’ve typed that a lot this season.

Oklahoma has one more game against Kansas on Sunday before coming home for Bedlam against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls starting on May 5 with the Big 12 regular season title on the line.

Oklahoma State is coming off of back-to-back losses against Florida State in Tallahassee. Before that, they swept the Longhorns in Stillwater.

How to Watch, listen to Oklahoma Women’s basketball vs Oklahoma State on Wednesday

The Sooners look to finish off a very strong regular season with a top 4 finish in the Big 12 starting with a rematch of a rivalry game.

While they are all but a guaranteed lock for the NCAA Tournament, The Oklahoma women’s basketball team is chasing much more than just a tournament berth. They want meaningful results in the tournament and they can start by pushing forward the last week of the regular season.

They are already slotted in as one of the 16 best seeds if the tournament started today according to the official March Madness account.

That shouldn’t matter to the women in Crimson and Cream as they are still fighting for seeding in the Big 12 tournament and trying to raise their stock to for their eventual NCAA Tournament seeding. They take the court fresh off of a major win against a scrappy Kansas State team that pushed the Sooners to the brink this past Sunday.

Senior guard Taylor Robertson was the hero with a buzzer-beating corner three and the Sooners picked up their second straight win. They head to Stillwater for a Bedlam rematch and look to complete a series sweep of their in-state rivals.

Oklahoma State enters as the 9th place team in the Big 12 and looks to salvage a part of their season with an upset win against their rivals. Lauren Fields leads the Cowgirls in points at 16.3 points per game.
