After suffering its 1st loss of the season last week — 43-40 at TCU in double overtime — Oklahoma State returns home to battle Texas in a game which will make or break the conference championship ability for each of these teams.

Cowboys QB Spencer Sanders has been playing terrific since the 2nd half of a 37-35 Fiesta Bowl win Jan. 1 against Notre Dame. Suffering an injury in the season opener, Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers was able to return 2 weeks ago to help lead a surprising 49-0 rout at Oklahoma. In last week’s 21-17 escape against visiting Iowa State, the freshman showed why he’s considered among the best young QBs in the country. Along with star RB Bijan Robinson and WR Xavier Worthy, Texas looks like it might finally be back if not this year, in 2023.

The Oklahoma State defense has not been the top-5 unit it was last season under departed defensive coordinator Jim Knowles (now with Ohio State). But new DC Derek Mason has kept the defense in the top half of the NCAA rankings. With the offense behind Sanders reverting to the days when it was scoring to win games, the defense is good enough to win the Big 12.

This will be a fun game between 2 good offenses and 2 of the best QBs in the conference. Be ready for some fireworks.

OKLAHOMA STATE (+190) is the play.

Not only are the Cowboys coming off their first loss of the season, but they return home knowing this is it for them in terms of the Big 12 race.

While Texas struggled and should have lost against an overmatched Iowa State team, Oklahoma State and Sanders will not be outmatched.

Mason’s Oklahoma State defense will make stops in this game and Texas’ Ewers will be confused by the defenses shown to him.

I like the Cowboys to get back on track. OKLAHOMA STATE (+190) my FAVORITE BET of this game.

Against the spread

Take Oklahoma State +6.5 (-110) if you’re not confident enough or nervous playing the +190 ML. Or, you can divvy up your 2 wagers (ML and spread) to equal 1½ units.

Oklahoma State will win this game outright. But if you want some wiggle room (or if you are adding this into a parlay), Oklahoma State +6.5 (-110) is safer and should still help you win some money.

Over/Under

BET OVER 61.5 (-107).

Yes, the defense for Oklahoma State can shut down some teams. But not Texas. The Longhorns offense just has too many weapons and with Ewers behind center, they have a QB to get the ball to them.

The Cowboys are coming off a game in which they gave up 43 to TCU in a double-OT loss. This game may not go to overtime, but the Longhorns can still get to 30.

I see the Cowboys getting more than 30 and that means an OVER 61.5 (-107) will hit.

TCU (-190) is a little too expensive for my liking, as I try to limit my money line plays at -180 or less. However, I think this could be a game that comes down to the final possessions, certainly a one-score game, and one that could be a decided by a 2-point conversion.

Against the spread

OKLAHOMA STATE +4.5 (-115) is likely to come up short in this road game in a battle of unbeatens, but it won’t go down easily, or quietly.

I expect plenty of offense in this game, with the game decided in the final quarter, perhaps even on the final possession. One team will move on unbeaten, and tops in the Big 12, while one team will remain in contention for the league title with a little help. This should be a close one.

Over/Under

OVER 67.5 (-115) is the lean in this one.

The Over has connected in 5 of the past 6 overall for Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys can score plenty. The Over is also 4-1 in its past 5 games against teams with winning overall records, too.

After sneaking past rival Texas 37-34 two weeks ago, the Red Raiders fell back to earth last Saturday with a 37-28 loss to Kansas State and QB Adrian Martinez.

In the 1st season under coach Joey McGuire, Texas Tech is on a path to relevance in the Big 12. Recruiting has been heating up and the fans and alumni are getting on board with the scheme he and new offensive coordinator Zach Kittley have brought to Lubbock. The “Air Raid” has been successful for the Red Raiders, however, it may not be enough against the Cowboys this week.

OSU was able to avenge last season’s Big 12 Championship Game loss by beating then No. 14 Baylor 36-25 last Saturday. Senior QB Spencer Sanders has finally shown why coach Mike Gundy has stayed with him so long despite his many struggles in key moments for Oklahoma State. This steadfast support is now being rewarded as the Cowboys boast an undefeated record heading into this matchup at home.

Oklahoma State has scored on everyone this season. With former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles now at Ohio State, the OSU defense has also taken a bit of a downturn in scoring. With the Red Raiders’ dangerous passing attack coming in, this one will be an old-fashioned, Big 12 “no defense allowed”, type of game — and it will be fun.

Texas Tech can score and score quickly. Even in games where Oklahoma State has gotten out to an early lead, it has given up points late for the backdoor cover. It’s too risky to make this play.

The Cowboys are good, but they do not always close teams out.

Over/Under

BET OVER 69 (-107).

This will be an old-fashioned Big 12 game where there are plenty of points. The Over might hit by halftime. Even if it is not, it will be Over by the end of the game with these two offenses.

They’re led by QB Blake Shapen who has 7 TDs and only 1 INT. The real offensive weapon for the Bears is RB Richard Reese, who has 315 yards on 55 carries, a 5.7 yards-per-carry average, and 6 TDs.

Oklahoma State has been perfect this season and is nicely following up its 12-2 campaign a year ago. OSU’s most notable win is a 34-17 victory over Arizona State, so the competition hasn’t been up to par yet.

QB Spencer Sanders is once against the leader of this program. The dual-threat quarterback has 916 yards and 10 TDs wit onlly 1 INT. OSU’s 51.7 points per game rank No. 1 in the nation. Coupled with a defense allowing just 22.7 points per game, OSU is the real deal.

I like Baylor enough here to pass on the money line option and play the points.

Against the spread

BET BAYLOR -2.5 (-115).

Everyone seems to be on Oklahoma State with well over 70% of the money coming in on the Cowboys. That should be exactly what the books want as the undefeated Sooners seem like the better play getting points here.

The Bears have a competent offense that ranks in the top 25, and they have something the Cowboys don’t — a tested defense. Baylor gave up 26 points to the QB Jaren Hall-led BYU Cougars on the road, and that was in overtime. It has allowed just 225 passing yards and under 80 rushing yards per game.

The Bears turnaround since a 2-7 season in 2020 has been mainly on the offensive end where they’ve averaged over 40 points per game. Sanders is an elite option, but Sharpen and Reese have consistently gotten the job done as well.

I’ll back the home side at -2.5 here and fade where all the money is headed.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 55.5 (-110).

It’s easy to look at 2 teams both averaging over 40 points per game and think the over is the play. It very well could be as well, but the Baylor defense is no joke.

Hall is a top-tier QB threat in college, and Baylor held him to under 300 passing yards and under 30 rushing yards. The Bears didn’t allow a player in that game north of 35 rushing yards.

On the other hand, OSU has 10 sacks and over 20 tackles for a loss through 3 games this season, allowing under 25 points per game as well. While the offenses may be the focal point, the defense should also thrive.

With high expectations in the Big 12, Oklahoma State will look to stay undefeated. However, it didn’t give bettors much to back in a Week 1 shootout, beating Central Michigan 58-44.

Oklahoma State did enter the half up 44-15, so this wasn’t as close as the score indicates. OSU starting QB Spencer Sanders went for 406 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Two drastically different offensive styles will clash as the run-heavy Sun Devils come to town. Arizona State beat Northern Arizona 40-3 in its season opener, but it did it behind 116 rushing yards from starting RB Xazavian Valladay.

Three different backs took double-digit carries with the Sun Devils topping 200 yards on the ground while starting QB Emory Jones had just 152 passing yards.

Money line

PASS.

Arizona State should be able to reasonably hang with Oklahoma State, but at +350, I don’t see enough value to sprinkle on its ability to come out on top on the road.

OSU was a perfect 7-0 at home last season.

Against the spread

LEAN OKLAHOMA STATE -11.5 (-112).

Sanders accounted for a career-high 6 touchdowns in the Cowboys’ season-opening victory. He’s the real deal and should have his speed on display against the Sun Devils.

Also, Arizona State didn’t have a tough challenge in Week 1 and has many new faces, including 2 transfer defensive backs, 2 starting transfer offensive linemen, a transfer starting quarterback and running back.

While that could undoubtedly bode well for it in the long run, the Sun Devils will have Jones leading the way, and he didn’t play overly well at Florida last season. He’s difficult to trust in this situation.

Most of Central Michigan’s success against OSU came through the air, not on the ground. Jones only threw 18 attempts in a 40-3 win. OSU should be able to limit the ground attack and force Jones to win.

I’ll back that OSU is able to tame a Sun Devils group that hasn’t played a high-level game with each other so far this season. Back OKLAHOMA STATE -11.5 (-112).

Over/Under

BET OVER 58.5 (-105).

Both teams scored 40 or more points to open the season.

Although OSU should be smarter and put more in the box to stop ASU’s rush game (especially with more size than Northern Arizona), they did allow over 120 rushing yards against Central Michigan.

While the statement remains that OSU should be able to be better against the run, just at what level it can stop ASU is still in question.

On the other hand, Sanders should be able to light up an ASU secondary that has 2 new starting faces. His dominance should help push the pace of this game and inevitably the OVER 58.5 (-105) feels like the better option.

Oklahoma State (-1600) isn’t going to get bitten by the upset bug again – it shouldn’t have lost that last meeting in 2016, either.

While Central Michigan (+800) has QB Daniel Richardson back, this team lost a pair of strong wideouts, including WR/KR Kalil Pimpleton. RB Lew Nichols III returns too, but CMU is likely to abandon the run game early after falling in a first-half hole.

Still, while the 11th-ranked Pokes should win, there is little value betting such a huge favorite.

Both teams figure to be on the edge when it comes to getting an NCAA Tournament at-large berth if they don’t win a Big 12 tourney title. Iowa State certainly has the edge in that pursuit, but both fives are vying to have their seasons continue into the back half of this month.

Give Iowa State the nod as the better team and a near-two-thirds win probability for a home contest against Oklahoma State side coming off an emotional loss to Oklahoma and three overtime games in a row. Will OSU have the resiliency to bang around the paint for points in this one? That’s where any Cowboy success will come because ISU plays lockdown perimeter defense.

The Jayhawks lost a 79-76 barnburner at then-No. 21 Texas last Monday, but they responded with a hard-fought 71-69 victory over Oklahoma Saturday. Kansas shot 53.1% to overcome nine 3-pointers by the Sooners. The Jayhawks are 12-1 at Allen Fieldhouse with their one loss coming against current No. 3 Kentucky.

OSU goes quick tempo to leverage turnovers and a solid ability to get to the line while hiding some inadequacies in rebounding and distance shooting. That pace did not work on even-faster Kansas the first time around. Even with a below-average shooting performance and only 12 attempts at the stripe, the Jayhawks controlled that one by three-to-four possessions just about every second of the final 10 minutes.

After a tight game at Allen Fieldhouse Saturday, look for the Jayhawks’ best against Oklahoma State. That best is worth a moderate play on KANSAS -10.5 (-115).

Over/Under

The Over is 5-1 in OSU’s last six overall and 5-2 in the last seven series meetings.

These are the fastest two teams in the Big 12. Mix in 3s and offensive boards on the home side and a decent number of trips to the line for the visitors.

G Bryce Williams is the Cowboys’ third-leading scorer, as he has an injury concern (questionable–leg).
