Where Texas stands among Big 12 championship contenders

Looking at the five conference contenders most likely to make the Big 12 championship game.

The Big 12 championship picture got clearer on Thursday night. The West Virginia Mountaineers handed the Baylor Bears their second conference loss of the season. With that loss, Baylor fell from the ranks of conference title favorites.

No team in the conference is yet eliminated, but there’s a significant separation between the bottom and top half of the league. Oklahoma and Iowa State are both 0-3 in conference, while Baylor, Texas Tech and West Virginia have already lost twice. Barring chaos, those five likely won’t make the championship game.

Texas stands at 2-1 in conference play heading into their home game against Iowa State. The Cyclones could be the Longhorns’ least difficult remaining game, but shouldn’t be considered an easy win.

Let’s look at the five conference contenders most likely to make the Big 12 championship game.

Texas continues to trend for four-star WR DeAndre Moore Jr.

Moore is the No. 81 overall player and No. 14 WR in the On3 consensus.

The Alabama Crimson Tide dealt Texas a tough loss on the recruiting trail this week. Nick Saban won out for talented Longview wide receiver Jalen Hale.

It appears it only took the Longhorns a couple of days to get over the loss.

Steve Sarkisian and company are trending for a big time wide receiver in the 2023 class. Current Louisville commit DeAndre Moore Jr. appears to be keeping his options open, and Texas is squarely in the mix.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas entered a prediction in favor of the Longhorns on Thursday.

The elite receiver hails from St. John Bosco, a California private school you have probably heard if you follow recruiting closely. A win would be huge for Sarkisian as he tries to build a pipeline from California to Texas in recruiting.

Here is what On3 Sports had to say about Moore.

Has strong long speed, running a wind-legal 10.90 in the 100 meters as a junior. … Uses his burst to quickly get upfield after the catch. Shows good contact balance with the ability to bounce out of and break tackles at the second level.

Moore is the No. 81 overall player and No. 14 wide receiver in the On3 consensus.

UGA recruiting target 4-star Jeremiah Williams sets commitment date

Four-star 2021 defensive end recruit Jeremiah Williams will pick from the Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers, and more.

The Georgia Bulldogs made Jeremiah “Scooby” Williams’ top four schools. Williams is a member of the class of 2021 and narrowed his list to Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Oklahoma earlier this year.

Williams will have plenty of time to make his decision. He is projected to join the Auburn Tigers, but anything can happen in SEC recruiting battles. Georgia faces the Tigers before his commitment date, so maybe that will influence his decision.

It was surprising to see him trim the Crimson Tide from his top schools. Notably, he plays with another elite defensive lineman (Tim Keenan), who has committed to Alabama.

Williams is a four-star defensive, who plays at Ramsay High School and is from Birmingham, Alabama. Williams announced his upcoming commitment date of Oct. 10 via his Twitter account:

The Georgia Bulldogs have 15 commitments in the class of 2021. Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning and the Bulldog defense have one edge rusher commitment at the moment. Georgia recently lost a commitment from edge player Elijah Jeudy, who had committed to UGA in the spring.

The Georgia Bulldogs currently have 13 commitments in the class of 2021. Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, and the Bulldog defense have two edge rusher commitments at the moment. You can never have too many pass rushers, especially in the SEC! Go Dawgs!

Four-star CB Isaiah Johnson makes commitment

Georgia Bulldogs recruiting target Isaiah Johnson has committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The University of Georgia offered a scholarship to defensive back Isaiah Johnson back in September. Johnson is a lengthy defender (6-foot-2), who would excel in Dan Lanning’s defensive scheme in Athens.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Johnson has committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Johnson is a four-star recruit who is rated as a five-star on some sites.ย  He is a member of the class of 2021. Johnson played football at Bluefield High School in West Virginia, but recently transferred to St. Bernard High School in Playa Del Rey, California.

Johnson put the Georgia Bulldogs, Arizona State Sun Devils, USC Trojans, LSU Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners in his top five. Now, he’s headed to Tempe.

Johnson missed his junior season of high school with an ankle injury, but could be in for a big season in 2020 (if high school football is played). In fact, California high school football has already been pushed into the spring of 2021.

The Bulldogs recruiting class currently features 11 commitments. UGA has a five star and eight four stars in the talented class. Georgia’s latest commitment is Jared Wilson, who has had an odyssey of a recruiting journey.
