Postgame wrap-up and quotes from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss to Oklahoma State in Norman

Postgame wrap-up from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss to Oklahoma State featuring postgame quotes from Lon Kruger and De’Vion Harmon.

The No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners were back at the Lloyd Noble Center for the first time in three weeks on Saturday as they welcomed in Bedlam rival Oklahoma State to Norman. The game will likely be remembered for some time as a classic in this rivalry, but with the Sooners on the losing end of things 94-90 in an overtime thriller.

“Heck of a ballgame, I thought,” head coach Lon Kruger said after the game. “Big time battle for 45 minutes, I guess. I thought guys on both teams competed like crazy, worked hard. We just couldn’t quite get it back over the hump. Again, it was a good battle. It was what games like that are supposed to be.”

The story of the game will easily be looked at as the historic outing of Cowboys’ freshman Cade Cunningham who exploded for 40 points and was absolutely dominant down the stretch and in the overtime period of his first Bedlam game. The future NBA lottery pick was unstoppable late and was an obvious huge piece to the road upset for Oklahoma State.

“He was terrific, obviously with a stat line like that.” Kruger said of Cunningham. “I thought our guys made him work for them (the 40 points). To his credit, I thought he made some big time shots, made some tough shots. Good players are capable of doing that, and he did.”

Oklahoma attempted to match Cunningham’s offensive heroics with the reliable duo of Austin Reaves and De’Vion Harmon who both turned in solid performances of their own on Saturday afternoon. Harmon was especially good, scoring an efficient 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting.

“I thought he was terrific, I thought he did a really good job,” Kruger said of Harmon. “He made shots, he got downhill, defensively he was good. De’Vion has had a lot of good ballgames for us and I thought he had a very good one tonight.”

“I just want to win,” Harmon said postgame. “And we didn’t do that. Yeah, I played a really good game but we didn’t win. And W’s are all that matter.”

The unique aspect, of course, of this year’s Bedlam series is the fact that these two teams will get the opportunity to run it back against each other just over 48 hours from now in Stillwater after that game was postponed back from earlier in the season. This gives the Sooners a great chance to wipe away this tough loss quickly and get things back on track.

“Of course we love it,” Harmon said about getting the chance to play the Cowboys again just two days later. “I know I love it. I’m a big time competitor, I want to compete. I know my teammates love it. Like I said, we’re going to be ready.

We just got to find a way to win, that’s all that matters.”

It is still likely too early to declare this is as a late season tailspin for the Sooners, but it certainly has to be somewhat concerning to drop two consecutive games as a favorite. The team will have two more big games in the coming week to try and get things back on track heading into the Big 12 Tournament.

Quite arguably now the biggest game of Oklahoma’s season to date, Bedlam round two is set for Monday night in Stillwater at 8:00 p.m. CT.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss against Oklahoma State in Norman

Three immediate takeaways from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss against Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon in Norman.

No. 7 Oklahoma was back at the Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday for the first time in three weeks to host in-state rival Oklahoma State in the first of two consecutive matchups between the two over a three-day span.

It was a tremendous game that went back and forth all the way down to the wire, even needing five more minutes to decide a winner. But, in the end, Cade Cunningham and the Cowboys were the better team outlasting the Sooners 94-90.

De’Vion Harmon and Austin Reaves were both very solid for Lon Kruger’s group, scoring 23 and 22 points respectively and making several key plays down the stretch to keep the team hanging in despite Cunningham’s barrage of shot-making and incredible playmaking.

The loss dips Oklahoma to 14-7 on the year and looking for answers with not a lot of time to find them. Here are three immediate takeaways to this Bedlam classic in Norman:

Couldn’t stop Cade Cunningham

An obvious big story coming into the game was how Oklahoma planned to deal with potential future No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Cade Cunningham. At first, the Sooners elected to start Jalen Hill in place of Elijah Harkless, which didn’t exactly go well with the Cowboys scoring 20 points in the first eight minutes and change with Cunningham settling in quickly.

Once Harkless entered the game, the defense for Oklahoma picked up significantly, with Cunningham slowing down and Oklahoma State generally not having it come nearly as easy on the offensive end. But, that would only last for so long.

Down the stretch and in the overtime period, Cunningham flat took over this game and showed everyone why the hype around him is so large. He was absolutely tremendous scoring 40 points that his team really needed to get the road upset.

It really feels like the game boiled down largely to the simple fact of the Sooners not having any answers for him late, and now they have just over 48 hours to figure out how to adjust to dealing with him again on Monday.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 62-57 loss against Kansas State in Manhattan

Three immediate takeaways from Oklahoma’s 62-57 upset loss to Kansas State on Tuesday night in Manhattan.

The No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners were back on the road Tuesday night in another place they hadn’t won in a while when they went to Manhattan to take on Kansas State.

Similar to the Iowa State game in Ames on Saturday, the Sooners were given all they wanted from an opponent who had not had a great season – but this time they didn’t come out on the right side of the scoreboard.

It looked for all the world that Oklahoma was going to absorb the Wildcats best shot and escape the Little Apple after they took a six-point lead with just under four minutes to go. But alas, Mike McGuirl got hot and Kansas State finished the game on a 15-4 run to pull off the road stunner.

The loss drops the Sooners to 14-6 on the season and gives them what has to be considered easily their worst loss of the season. Here are three immediate takeaways from the game:

This is a bad loss, obviously

This is a pretty bad loss for Oklahoma both in terms of the opponent and also the way it unfolded. This game was not as much of an easy win as it was likely viewed by many given Kansas State’s record, as they are still a tough team playing with confidence off of a win and were on their home floor.

But, the Sooners did beat them by 26 points the first time and held a 6-point lead late in this one. This is a game they should have had.

Oklahoma has done a terrific job of taking advantage of the bottom of the conference this season, but they didn’t take care of their business this time.

Teams lose to teams they are better than all the time in all sports, but especially in college basketball. It happens. This team has done a fantastic job avoiding this kind of thing all season long.

There isn’t any evidence to think this isn’t simply an aberration, but how they respond on Saturday for Bedlam will be highly interesting.

When, where, how to watch Oklahoma basketball take on Iowa State

Everything you need to know for when Oklahoma travels to take on Iowa State in Ames on Saturday.

The No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners (13-5, 8-4) are once again set to return to action after a long layoff on Saturday when they take on last-place Iowa State (2-15, 0-12) in Ames.

It has been a weird week for the Sooners having their game with rival Texas bumped three separate times. Originally set for Tuesday, severe winter weather in the area forced the game to be pushed back to Wednesday. Then it was postponed again over to Thursday, before eventually being postponed indefinitely.

Pair all of that with the Baylor game last week being postponed due to COVID-19 issues with the Bears and today will mark just the third game Oklahoma has played in a 19-day stretch. Obviously a difficult situation to keep momentum, Lon Kruger stressed the importance of quality practices to stay in rhythm with so much time between games.

Saturday marks the 210th all-time meeting between the Sooners and the Cyclones and the second this season after Oklahoma won the first matchup in Norman two weeks ago. On that day, Iowa State hit a barrage of 3-pointers to flirt with pulling off the road upset. But, Elijah Harkless’ 19 points and Brady Manek’s astounding 15 rebounds helped the Sooners hang on late.

For the rematch on Saturday, here is everything you need to know:

WHEN:  5:00 p.m. CT

Lon Kruger named to late season watch list for Men’s Coach of the Year

Oklahoma basketball coach Lon Kruger was named to the late season watch list for Men’s Coach of the Year on Friday.

Oklahoma has been one of the surprise teams in the country this season quickly rising as a top-tier team in the Big 12 and a top-10 ranking in the country. Along with the success, head coach Lon Kruger has received heaps for praise for what he has created in Norman in a team that plays with supreme effort and utilizes their depth as a key element to their winning.

On Friday, Kruger received some recognition for the job he has done as he was named to the late season watch list for the 2021 Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year Award. He is one of 15 coaches that were announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club this morning.

The other coaches to make up the list are Casey Alexander (Belmont). Darian DeVries (Drake), Scott Drew (Baylor), Andy Enfield (USC), Mark Few (Gonzaga), Leonard Hamilton (Florida State), Chris Holtmann (Ohio State), Juwan Howard (Michigan), Bob Huggins (West Virginia), Porter Moses (Loyola-Chicago), Nate Oats (Alabama), Kelvin Sampson (Houston), Shaka Smart (Texas) and Mike Young (Virginia Tech).

It is worth noting that Kruger is 4-1 this season against coaches in that group while no other coach has more than two such wins. That might be a nice little feather in his cap when things are getting decided later on.

In his 10th season leading the Sooners, Kruger is widely respected around the country and typically considered among the most underrated coaches in the sport. Famously, he is the only coach in college basketball history to win an NCAA Tournament game with five different programs.

Oklahoma will return to action on Saturday against Iowa State in Ames at 5:00 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma-Texas postponed a second time, now set for Thursday

Oklahoma’s game with Texas has been postponed a second time, now set for Thursday after already being pushed back from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Winter weather in the region is wreaking havoc on sports on right now and Oklahoma basketball is no different. After already having their home game against Texas pushed back from Tuesday night to Wednesday, it has now been knocked back another day to Thursday.

As anyone in the region knows, the weather is extremely unkind right now and far from safe for anyone to travel — let alone the Longhorns who will be coming up all the way from Austin. The power conservation efforts currently going on in the state may play at least some part in this decision as well.

Originally set for an 8:00 p.m. CT tip on ESPN Tuesday night, the game was moved to a 5:00 p.m. CT tip on ESPN2 Wednesday evening after severe weather in the area. The conditions have been deemed to not have improved enough to move forward, so the Big 12 is now tentatively planning for the game to be played Thursday. Tip time and television broadcast information isn’t available at this time, but likely will be shortly.

Sooners Wire will provide updates when information becomes available as to when the new tip time will be and on what network the game will be aired.

Tuesday night’s Oklahoma-Texas game postponed to Wednesday

Tuesday night’s Oklahoma-Texas basketball matchup has been postponed back to Wednesday due to severe winter weather in the area.

Severe winter weather is impacting many people in the region currently and sports are understandably having their schedules altered because of it. Already on Monday, Oklahoma baseball canceled their home series this weekend in lieu of games in south Texas. Now, Oklahoma basketball has pushed back their Tuesday night game against Texas to Wednesday.

At the very least, this gives all involved more time to see how the weather plays out and what potential back-up plans are available down the road if the game still could not be played this week. At this time there is no available information regarding tip time of the game or the television broadcast of the contest.

A highly-anticipated game in the Big 12 and around the country, the matchup was originally set for a primetime 8:00 p.m. CT tip time on ESPN. The two rivals already met once this season, with Oklahoma picking up the road win in Austin a few weeks ago in late January.

Sooners Wire will provide updates on the situation as they become available. For now, the Sooners and Longhorns will shift things over a day and prepare to tee it up against one another on Wednesday.
