Odafe Oweh records two sacks on Ravens first two defensive drives vs. Raiders

Odafe Oweh’s matchup with the Raiders Kolton Miller was something to watch, and through the first quarter of Baltimore’s matchup against Las Vegas, the Ravens pass rusher has looked unstoppable.

Baltimore has played two defensive drives, and Oweh has a sack on each.

His sack on third-and-four forces the Raiders to punt. Oweh had five sacks all of last season.

Oweh’s initial sack came on the Raiders’ first offensive play at M&T Bank Stadium.

Ravens DC Zach Orr is seeing positive things from LB Odafe Oweh

Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr is seeing positive things from outside linebacker Odafe Oweh

The Baltimore Ravens selected outside linebacker Odafe Oweh with the 31st pick in the 2021 NFL draft. While he hasn’t had a true NFL breakout yet, he’s shown plenty of flashes that could indicate that 2024 is the year that he does so.

When talking about Oweh, defensive coordinator Zach Orr couldn’t contain his excitement about the fourth-year player. He said that there aren’t a lot of players in the league that can do what Oweh does off of the edge, and he’s excited to see where Oweh takes his season this year.

“It will be big, man. It will be big. I think ‘Daf’ [Odafe Oweh] has continued to get better every single year, and when you watch the film, there are a lot of people in this league who cannot do what he can do on the edge. That guy is so talented, and he made a lot of plays last year, so we expect him to make even more plays this year. The better ‘Daf’ is, the better we’re going to be as a [defense], and he knows that, and he’s been putting in the work. So, he’s looking better than he did last year so far, and I’m excited to see where he’s going to take it.”

With edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney now in Carolina with the Panthers, it’s even more important for Oweh to step up and contribute in a big way. He’s someone that will also need to step up as a leader, considering he’s the second-most experienced player in Baltimore’s outside linebacker room behind Kyle Van Noy,

Josh Johnson was 5-7 for 71 yards and one passing touchdown, while Michael Pratt led Green Bay in passing, going 8-12 for 80 yards and one touchdown. The Packers were dominant on the ground, amassing 193 rushing yards, as Ellis Merriweather led all ball carriers with 16 yards for 74 yards. The Packers held the ball for nearly ten minutes longer than the Ravens and out-gained Baltimore by 326 yards to 177 for John Harbaugh’s bunch. Ravens pass rush coach Chuck Smith believes Odafe Oweh will finally reach that pinnacle

Other than Rashod Bateman, no Ravens player has been under the “is this the year he breakout?” microscope more than Odafe Oweh.

Is this the year that Odafe Oweh will finally break out and live up to his status as a first-round NFL Draft pick?

Baltimore Ravens Pass Rush Coach Chuck Smith thinks so, as he predicts Oweh to become an “A-list rusher” in 2024.

Oweh has only started 13 games throughout his three-year career, with six coming in 2022. He’s also never topped five sacks in a single season.

Maybe this is the year that the 31st overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft starts stuffing stat sheets?

“He’s getting there,” Smith said after practice on Monday. “He’s going to be an A-list rusher. I’m excited for him.”

“He’s buying in, like he always has. He’s a good dude and no one deserves (more) to finally reach that pinnacle than Odafe, and I think he’s going to go 100% to reach that goal.”

Other than Rashod Bateman, no Ravens player has been under the “Is this the year he’s going to break through?” microscope more than Oweh.

On the Ravens depth chart, Oweh is currently listed as one of the two starting outside linebackers (Kyle Van Noy is the other).

Trenton Simpson is listed as the starting weakside inside linebacker (or “will position), while Roquan Smith is listed as the middle linebacker (or “mike” position)

The Ravens returned to the field for live game action for the first time since their heartbreaking, 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game.

Baltimore hosted Philadelphia at M&T Bank Stadium, with both teams on similar arcs, and championship paths. Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson sat out along with key starters on both sides of the football.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made a 49-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 16-13 victory after Baltimore quarterback Emory Jones — who had just entered the game — was sacked and fumbled on the next play.

The recovery by Patrick Johnson gave Elliott his final opportunity of the night.

With Baltimore set to start preparation for the Falcons in the second week of the preseason, we’re looking at the top photos from Friday night.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh hoping for breakout year from Odafe Oweh

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is hoping for a breakout year from outside linebacker Odafe Oweh

The Baltimore Ravens drafted outside linebacker Odafe Oweh in the first round of the 2021 draft. While he has shown flashes and been a solid overall player for the team over his first three seasons, he has yet to reach his full potential at the NFL level.

Head coach John Harbaugh has plenty of expectations for Oweh in 2024, especially in a year when the Ravens need him more than ever. He said that he’s hoping Oweh has a breakout year and praises his movement skills and ability to be disruptive.

“He’s looked very good. Odafe [Oweh] has looked very good, and I’m hoping that he has – I guess you’d call it a breakout year if you want to call it that [and] make those plays on the quarterback. He had a lot of pressures last year. [He] wants to take it to the next level and go ahead and get the quarterback on the ground; I’m sure he wants to do that, and then just continue to be an explosive player. [He’s] got a really unique skillset – I mean he can really move and run around and be disruptive. That’s what I’m hoping for and expecting.”

Pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney departed for the Carolina Panthers in 2024 free agency, opening up a much more significant role for Oweh this season. He will have to capitalize to help Baltimore’s defense reach its full potential, something they need if they want to compete for a Super Bowl.

Ravens DC Zach Orr discusses the importance of Odafe Oweh having a big year

The Baltimore Ravens deployed one of the league’s best defenses last season and will be looking to do so again this year despite losing defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and several important players.

One player the Ravens will need to step up this season is former first-round pick Odafe Oweh. New defensive coordinator Zach Orr talked about the importance of Oweh having a big year.

It will be big, man,Orr said. “It will be big. I think ‘Daf’ [Odafe Oweh] has continued to get better every single year, and when you watch the film, there are a lot of people in this league who cannot do what he can do on the edge. So, he’s looking better than he did last year so far, and I’m excited to see where he’s going to take it.

Baltimore picked up Oweh’s fifth-year option this offseason, keeping him with the team through the next two seasons. The uber athletic edge rusher has flashed over his first three seasons in the NFL but has yet to reach the potential that made him a first-round selection out of Penn State in 2021. Oweh finished last season with five sacks amidst an injury-riddled year.
