Watch: Jake Evans’ game-winning goal in 2018 Frozen Four

Remember this?

Not long ago, Notre Dame was a regular contender for national championships. Perhaps that’s why quite a few NHL players today once played in South Bend. Among those is [autotag]Jake Evans[/autotag], who has done pretty well for himself with the Montreal Canadiens. But whatever he does the rest of his career, few feelings will compare to the game-winning goal in the 2018 Frozen Four against Michigan:

As of this writing, it’s been six years and one day since Evans etched himself into Irish lore forever. The Irish ended up losing to Minnesota-Duluth in the national championship game, but Evans contributed to the Irish’s cause in that game with the secondary assist on their lone goal by [autotag]Andrew Oglevie[/autotag].

Perhaps someday, there will be a moment that surpasses this one and ends with the Irish as the last team standing. For the moment though, there is an established precedent that they can get as close as possible without actually winning it all. Most programs would take that in a heartbeat.

‘Chicago’s college hockey team’ at barbecue and country music festival

Wonder if anyone noticed them.

It’s summer, and while Notre Dame’s hockey team surely is preparing for the 2023-24 season, that’s doesn’t mean a little fun isn’t in order. And that also doesn’t mean the fun has to stay in South Bend. Chicago is the closest big city to the Notre Dame campus, and it’s where many Irish fans live. Add the fact that the Irish have five players from the area, and it only made sense to head out that way:

Specifically, the Irish were at the United Center for the Windy City Smokeout, a festival in which attendees can enjoy a heavy selection of barbecue food and some of the top country music artists around. The festival is taking place over four days, and one of them clearly worked out for the Irish. Here’s hoping everyone there had their fill of food and music. After all, summer comes around only once a year, so it’s best to make the most of it.

Concessions returning to Notre Dame basketball, hockey games

Come to the games ready to eat and drink again.

If you’ve been avoiding Notre Dame basketball and hockey games because of the lack of concessions available, you no longer have that excuse. Beginning with the men’s basketball game Wednesday against Boston College, food and beverages will be offered once again at Purcell Pavilion and Compton Family Ice Arena:

While we don’t know if this will provide a boost in attendance at these events, the men’s basketball team in particular could use it. Much has been made about the Irish having a team that could end the program’s NCAA Tournament drought but not attracting a lot of fans besides the students. It’s unknown if no concessions played a part in keeping people away, but all that matters is that it no longer is an issue. Folks attending basketball and hockey games now can eat and drink as their hearts desire.

One thing that hasn’t changed is that masks still are required for attendees of these games, so remember to wear yours.

Bischel And Galajda Named To Richter Award Watch List

Notre Dame’s goaltenders have been key in the team’s success this year and were recognized nationally this week.

The following is courtesy of Notre Dame Athletics:

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  – The Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) announced Fighting Irish goaltenders Ryan Bischel and Matthew Galajda have been named to the Watch List for the 2022 Mike Richter Award, which has been given annually to the top goalie in NCAA Division I men’s hockey since 2014.

Bischel, a junior, and Galajda, a graduate student, are two of 28 goalies who have been named to the Watch List and are the only set of teammates to make the list. They also represent two of the six Big Ten players up for the award.

Bischel has started 11 games this season, posting a 7-4-0 record to go along with a .923 save percentage and a 2.05 goals against average. He posted his first career shutout in Notre Dame’s 5-0 win over Niagara, stopping all 19 shots he faced (Jan. 2). He then made a career-high 38 saves in Notre Dame’s 4-2 win at Penn State (Jan. 7).

Galajda has gone 10-3-0 in 13 starts this season while posting a .929 save percentage and 1.93 goals against average. He posted shutouts against RIT (Oct. 22) and Wisconsin (Nov. 13) to move into a tie for third in NCAA Division I men’s hockey history with 21. He posted a career high 40 saves in Notre Dame’s recent 8-2 victory over Boston College (Jan. 19).

Former Notre Dame goaltender Cale Morris was the 2018 recipient of the Mike Richter award, while Galajda, playing for Cornell, was a finalist in both 2018 and 2020.

A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare this list down to approximately 15 names within the next two weeks and then ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four.

Next Up For Notre Dame

  • Notre Dame has the Big Ten bye this weekend and will then play host to 11th-ranked Minnesota on Jan. 28-29 at Compton Family Ice Arena to open the stretch run (tickets).
  • Both the Friday (7:30 p.m. ET) and Saturday (6 p.m. ET) games against the Gophers will be on Peacock.

Notre Dame hockey upset by Niagara

Tough loss to open 2022

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The 10th-ranked Fighting Irish returned from winter break but dropped a 3-1 decision to Niagara on Saturday evening at Compton Family Ice Arena (3,374).

Spencer Stastney scored for the Irish to make it a 2-1 game in the second but the Irish could not find a tying goal and Niagara added an empty net tally late in the third.

“We just weren’t as ready to play as they were, that’s what it boils down to,” head coach Jeff Jackson said after the game. “It was disappointing, we wanted to get off to a good start in the second half … give them their due, they played well. We have to execute better.”

The Notre Dame power play was 0-for-3 on the night, while the Purple Eagles were 0-for-4.

In net Matthew Galajda totaled 25 saves, while Chad Veltri finished with 27 saves to earn the win.

How It Happened

The teams traded early power-play chances in the first but neither squad could get on the board with the man advantage.

Niagara then took a 1-0 lead at 14:44 of the first on Jason Pineo’s first of the year, which he scored from the low slot.

Notre Dame went back on the power play with 2:53 left in the first. Solag Bakich had the best look, but his snapshot from in front flashed wide and the Irish trailed 1-0 after the first.

Spencer Stastney got the Irish on the board early in the second, with his first career shorthanded goal coming on a breakaway at the 3:52 mark.

The Irish had several more chances right after tying it up, including a Hunter Strand shot that hit the post.

But Niagara was able to take the lead back, 2-1, at 13:38 on an Albin Nilsson goal.

The Purple Eagles got another power play early in the third, but the Irish killed it off including a big stop by Galajda on Josef Mysak.

Notre Dame got a power play midway through the third, but Veltri made saves on Graham Slaggert and Grant Silianoff to keep the Purple Eagles in front.

Nilsson then sealed it with an empty net tally from center ice at the 18:35 mark of the third.

Notes

  • Spencer Stastney scored his first career shorthanded goal, which was Notre Dame’s third shorthanded tally of the season.
  • Stastney now has three goals in the last three games.

Next Up

  • The Fighting Irish and Purple Eagles will close out their series tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 2) with another 5 p.m. ET game at the Compton Family Ice Arena (tickets).
  • For those attending games, the University has updated its COVID-19 health and safety protocols (masks required, no concessions available): https://covid.nd.edu/news/spring-semester-covid-19-protocols-update/
  • The game will also be available on Peacock.

MSU Hockey earns all three Big Ten stars of the week

Michigan State hockey came away with three big points against Notre Dame this past weekend. Three members of the team earned Big Ten honors.

Michigan State hockey is off and running with their 2020-21 season. Head Coach Danton Cole is entering his fourth season at the helm with the hopes to continue building the Spartans into a Big Ten contender.

A crucial series with Notre Dame this past weekend was a great point to start turning the season back in the right direction. Michigan State went into South Bend and came away with three points after a 1-1 tie (the team lost the shootout for the extra point), and a 4-3 overtime victory.

Three Spartans, goalie Drew DeRidder, defenseman Tommy Miller and center Tommy Apap were recognized for their performances this past weekend, earning the Big Ten’s first, second and third star honors.

Michigan State came into the weekend series against the no. 16 ranked Fighting Irish with a 2-3-1 record, splitting their two opening series against Arizona State and Ohio State and getting swept by Minnesota, who is currently ranked no. 1 in the nation.

This series is the last of Michigan State hockey for 2020, ending the first portion of the season with a 3-3-2 record. Typical to the Danton Cole era at MSU, the Spartans have been competitive in every game they have played in and will be a tough contender as the season unfolds in the new year.

The Spartans look to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in the Danton Cole era, as well as a strong finish in pursuing a Big Ten Championship.

The Spartans are back on the ice on January 3rd and 4th for a series against Penn State at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.

Partial 2020-21 Notre Dame Hockey Schedule Released

Lost in the hoopla of Saturday’s football game is that there will be a 2020-21 season for Notre Dame hockey.

Lost in the hoopla of Saturday’s football game is that there will be a 2020-21 season for Notre Dame hockey. On Thursday, the Big Ten announced its schedule running up to its pre-winter break. The Irish will begin their season next weekend with two home games against Wisconsin. Starting with Thanksgiving weekend, they will play two-game series on four consecutive weekends against Michigan, Arizona State, Ohio State and Michigan State in that order.

The rest of the schedule will be announced at a late date. All Big Ten teams will play 24 conference games, plus four additional homes games against the Sun Devils. Every team will qualify for the conference tournament, which will revert to single-elimination, one-weekend format it had during the Big Ten’s initial four years in hockey.

We’re very fortunate to see college hockey come back when it, like many other sports, was uncertain about its immediate future. Anything that makes it feel like normal times, we’re all for. It gives us peace of mind in this tumultuous moment.
