Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 4

Today’s installment focuses on the 30 players who wore No. 4 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history or interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 30 players who wore No. 4 over the years as of September 2023.

Former Boston big man Noah Vonleh reportedly signs with CBA’s Shanghai Sharks

Vonleh has become the next Celtics alum to find themselves a new home playing overseas.

Former Boston Celtics big man Noah Vonleh has become the latest former Celtic to find himself a new home playing overseas. Per Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype, Vonleh signed a new deal with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Shanghai Sharks, with whom the onetime Indiana Hoosier also played for during the 2021-22 season.

For the 2022-23 season, Vonleh played with Boston as a depth big man. He played in 23 games for the Celtics. He put up 1.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 45.8% from the field overall and 25% from beyond the 3-point line.

Vonleh was dealt from the Celtics to the San Antonio Spurs with cash to cover his remaining salary for a protected second-round pick and a traded exception. The Spurs subsequently waived the Salem native.

Will the Noah Vonleh trade lead to more moves for the Boston Celtics?

The deal will reportedly save the Celtics about $7 million in salary and tax while also opening up a roster spot the ball club has a variety of options to fill — or leave vacant.

The Boston Celtics made a move ahead of the guarantee date on veteran big man Noah Vonleh’s contract, trading the former Indiana player to the San Antonio Spurs this month.

The deal will reportedly save the Celtics about $7 million in salary and tax while opening a roster spot.

From signing players to minimum deals, using the disabled player exception to sign a player or absorbing the contract of a player who can fit into Boston’s cap restrictions via a traded player exception, the Celtics have a number of options available to tweak the team as they feel necessary heading into the last month before the 2023 trade deadline in February.

The host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast was recently joined by NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg to talk all of this over.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the pair had to say.

Report: Celtics sending Noah Vonleh to San Antonio for cash considerations

The Noah Vonleh era is over in Boston.

The Boston Celtics are trading veteran big man Noah Vonleh to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for cash considerations according to multiple reports.

The Massachusetts native signed with the Celtics in September before earning a roster spot with the club in October. Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, he will be waived by San Antonio.

Vonleh appeared in 23 games for Boston, including a start early in the year. The former Indiana University player averaged 7 minutes of floor time per contest, though his usage has notably declined as the season matured. With Robert Williams III’s recent return from injury, Boston’s frontcourt rotation became a little bit deeper, though it is possible the team looks to add another big following this trade.

What the Celtics do next is certainly intriguing. They have traded player exceptions that could be used to bring in a player earning somewhat more than the minimum deal Vonleh was earning. They also have a disabled player exception from the Danilo Gallinari injury. If nothing else, the move will save the team about $7 million in salary and taxes, per Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith.

Boston could also use the roster spot to nab a player off of the buyout market to help add some size or perhaps wing depth, both of which could prove useful in stabilizing the team’s bench.

The NBA’s trade deadline is Feb. 9.

Five Boston Celtics become trade-eligible today

These players are now available to be dealt if the need arises.

An important day on the NBA calendar has arrived with December 15; many of the players who signed new contracts over the summer at the start of the free agency period are now eligible to be traded with the lifting of the moratorium against it on this date.

That means ball clubs will now have a significantly larger pool of players to choose from when constructing trades both on the sending side of the bargain, and among potential targets. At present, there is little chatter of significance involving the Boston Celtics in any potential trades, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking for ways to make their roster better.

Let’s take a look at the five players on the team who are now eligible to be traded and what they are making for cap management purposes, even if it’s looking like most if not all will be with the team come April.

Boston Celtics get solid grade in reassessment of 2022 NBA offseason

After Gallo’s ACL injury, the view of Boston’s offseason suffered a bit but has since improved with evidence.

The Boston Celtics had themselves one of the best offseasons in the NBA by most accounts until the injury to veteran forward Danilo Gallinari knocked the Celtics down a peg in the estimation of some with an ACL tear that should have him out until at least the postseason if not longer.

But now that the same doubters have had a shot at seeing the other major addition to the roster — former Indiana Pacers point guard Malcolm Brogdon — as well as big men Blake Griffin and Noah Vonleh, the assessment of the team’s offseason has trended back up.

One such assessment seeing the Celtics’ offseason additions in a positive light is Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz, who grades the Celtics a solid “B” for the players they picked up.

Boston native Shabazz Napier on the Celtics, friendship with Kemba Walker, Noah Vonleh

The UConn champ opened up about his fandom for Boston sports while making a return bid with the Mexico City Capitanes.

Roxbury native Shabazz Napier is a New England sports fan, growing up rooting for the Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, and of course the Boston Celtics while growing up in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood.

And while he stayed relatively local when he elected to play his college ball for the University of Connecticut Huskies in Storrs roughly two hours to the south where he helped win two NCAA titles, his pro career has taken him quite literally around the world if not back to Boston — at least yet. As is the case now, the team has usually been flush with guards, and his floor generalship has instead taken him to other teams.

Now playing for the G League’s Mexico City Capitanes along former No. 3 pick Jahlil Okafor and Celtics camp invitee Bruno Caboclo, Napier is following an increasingly popular path for players looking to get back in the league.

Celtics sign Noah Vonleh to opening night roster

The Celtics have added MA native Noah Vonleh to the club’s official opening night roster.

The Boston Celtics will reportedly add forward Noah Vonleh to the club’s opening night roster. With Robert Williams sidelined for the foreseeable future, adding front court depth was deemed a top priority for the Celtics in recent weeks. Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Haverhill, MA native earned the role after an impressive preseason performance.

Vonleh was selected ninth overall in the 2014 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets. In the years since, Vonleh has bounced around the league, and actually spent last season with the Shanghai Sharks in China. On Aug. 2 of this year, he signed a non-guaranteed deal with Boston. Now, however, it appears Vonleh will be with the Celtics headed into the ’22-23 campaign.

When he first got the call from the team, Vonleh was thrilled. “I was very excited,” Vonleh said, “especially as a hometown kid from the area.”

Vonleh has a chance to reestablish himself in the NBA. A solid rebounder with a good outside shot, Boston could call on Vonleh to be a featured piece in a re-vamped second unit. The Celtics open the season Tuesday night at home against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Why Celtics camp invitee Noah Vonleh should be the favorite to make Boston’s 2022-23 roster

Is the Indiana alumnus the right fit for the Celtics?

With the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reporting veteran big man and Haverhill native Noah Vonleh is the camp invitee “best positioned” to make the team’s 2022-23 regular-season roster, the question for some fans and analysts is if the Indiana alumnus is the right fit for the Celtics.

He has been the best of the Celtics’ unsigned camp invitees battling for the Celtics’ two remaining roster spots. On the other hand, there is an opportunity cost involved in Vonleh gaining the roster spot unless his deal contains guarantees he might not accept.

Host of the “How about them Celtics” podcast Jack Simone recently made his case on why Vonleh should indeed be in the lead to land a regular-season roster spot.

Celtics reportedly plan to use all 15 roster spots, look internally with Noah Vonleh ‘best positioned’

The team will monitor cut players around the league as well, per reports.

According to recent reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the Boston Celtics plan to use all 15 roster spots — and expect to fill them internally barring an unexpected player shaking free ahead of the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

While Boston will “continue to keep tabs on cuts” around the NBA, big man Noah Vonleh ” is best positioned to secure one of the final two open spots.” That leaves Justin Jackson, Jake Layman and Mfiondu Kabengele in the running for the other. Kabegele is the least likely to make the full roster given he is already under contract as a two-way player.

Boston could maintain flexibility here and get an extended look at players by using partially guaranteed deals that would allow the team to keep them up to the January league-wide deadline to guarantee contracts.
