Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke highly of WR Nikko Remigio’s preseason performance

The Kansas City Chiefs opened the preseason on Sunday with a shocking loss. Exhibition results rarely impact a team’s mindset before the regular season starts, the miscues become teachable moments throughout the rest of training camp.

The first-team offense wasn’t its usual sharp self in the brief time they were on the field. The defense wasn’t much better, surrendering seventeen unanswered points in the first half leading to some concerns over the unit’s effectiveness without Chris Jones. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid did discuss a positive from the game with the standout play of undrafted rookie Nikko Remigio during Tuesday’s press conference.

“He had a really nice game,” said Reid. “He Did some really good things both special teams-wise and in the throw game part of it, you know, the catching part, so we’ll see how this thing goes. You know, the shoulders back in and all that, but we just have to see how he does.”

Remingo had four catches for 71 yards but suffered a shoulder injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Reid has another preseason game this Saturday night to correct some issues back in Arizona, where the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII. Remigio may not be available after injury, but his performance has turned heads.

Nikko Remigio clarifies pronunciation of his surname on Twitter

#Chiefs receiver Nikko Remigio took to Twitter to clarify the pronunciation of his surname, which fans may have been saying incorrectly.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Nikko Remigio has been a standout at training camp, rising to relevance as an undrafted rookie in St. Joseph. His talent is evident in nearly every repetition he takes at Missouri Western State University, but less clear is the proper pronunciation of his last name, which he clarified in a post on Twitter.

The lack of any “G” sound in his last name was surprising to many fans who had been pronouncing his surname “ruh-me-GEE-oh” during the preseason. The Philippine flag in his Twitter bio is a good indication that this name may be of Spanish origin, which would account for the difference in perceived pronunciation.

Ancestry.com states that the name Remigio is of Spanish origin as well, stemming from the Latin name Remigius, which may be shortened to Remy.

Chiefs Kingdom is sure to pronounce his surname correctly moving forward as he continues to work toward securing a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster.

Two Chiefs WRs carted off field at Tuesday training camp practice

Two #Chiefs receivers were carted off the field at Tuesday’s practice session. The nature and severity of their injuries is unknown.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ depth at the wide receiver position may have taken a hit on Tuesday after preseason Week 1 standout Justyn Ross and Nikko Remigio were carted off the field at the team’s Tuesday practice session. The exact nature of their injuries is unknown.

Ross’ injury is particularly concerning because of his growing role in Kansas City’s offense. He caught a touchdown on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals and looked to be developing well at training camp.

Remigio was another standout at Chiefs training camp and led Kansas City in receiving yards on Sunday. His loss would be a crushing blow for the Chiefs’ coaching staff, who seemed keen to keep giving Remigio playing time in the preseason to prove that he is worthy of a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster.

Fans will have to wait until Andy Reid’s post-practice press conference to learn more details about the extent and nature of these untimely injuries.

WATCH: Chiefs rookie Nikko Remigio makes impressive diving catch

Watch Chiefs rookie Nikko Remigio lay out to secure this incredible diving catch. | from: @WesleyRoesch

Kansas City Chiefs rookie receiver Nikko Remigio is beginning to earn a reputation as a human highlight reel for his catches in training camp.

One week removed from a crazy fade-away catch that saw Remigio land straight on his back and pop up as if nothing happened (against the team’s top cornerback, no less), Remigio reeled in yet another insane catch in practice — this time a full-stretch dive.

Take a look:

This slightly-overthrown pass was expertly caught by the 5-foot-9, 187-pound Fresno State product despite landing hard on his abdomen. The tenacity it takes to make a catch like that — and make it look relatively easy — is outstanding.

With highlight-reel clips like these, Remigio may earn himself a spot on the Chiefs’ roster if he keeps up the spectacular work during practice and preseason. It also helps that Remigio is an adept punt and kick returner — he earned over 1,600 total return yards and three total return touchdowns in college.

If Remigio continues to play well and catch the eye of both coach Andy Reid and special teams coordinator Dave Toub, the team may have no choice but to find a way to keep him around.

Matt Nagy on developing Chiefs’ young receivers: ‘There are going to be mistakes’

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy shared his gameplan for developing the #Chiefs’ young talent at the receiver position. | from: @LazarczykLogan

Despite being fresh off a Super Bowl LVII victory, the Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of a youth movement on their offense. Coordinator Matt Nagy is no stranger to developing young talent and should be up to the task of getting Kansas City’s promising prospects up to speed ahead of the regular season.

Nagy described what he wants to see from some of these young players, particularly at the receiver position, in training camp during the Chiefs’ post-practice press conference on Thursday.

“What you want to look for is guys [who] do not repeat the same mistakes,” he explained. “There are going to be mistakes learning the offense, there are going to be mistakes when you are going up against the defense, but don’t repeat them. That’s really what we look for. Then the guys that don’t make mistakes – you kind of combine that, then you obviously have to have traits as well.”

Kansas City’s receiving corps will be a group to watch as Nagy assesses his options to this end ahead of the regular season given their relative inexperience.

Led by veterans like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson, who have only been in the system for one whole season, their younger pass catchers — Justyn Ross, Rashee Rice, Nikko Remigio, and Skyy Moore — will all have to continue learning on the fly as they look to cement their roles in the Chiefs’ offense ahead of the 2023 season.
