Derek Carr sits outside of NFL analyst’s top-20 in final QB rankings

Derek Carr’s late-season surge gave confidence for 2024, but it wasn’t enough for this NFL analyst to consider him a top-20 quarterback in 2023:

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has arguably been the most discussed player on the team in 2023. The expectations were high and unmet. Your opinion on Carr’s debut season depends on if his flashes hold more weight than the majority of the season in your mind. They don’t in the mind of NFL.com analyst Nick Shook .

Carr ranks as Shook’s 22nd best quarterback out of 66 passers who started last season. That’s a one spot better than he ranked in 2022. Shook suggests Carr’s inconsistencies are representative of the team’s similar struggles, writing:

Carr was supposed to finally answer the Saints’ long-running problem under center, one that has persisted since the moment Drew Brees retired. He may have done so, but it took him nearly an entire season to get there. The Saints were an incredibly frustrating operation in 2023 because they didn’t know who they wanted to be until the final month, and that included Carr, a quarterback who frequently checked down and inexplicably struggled to establish a connection with 2022 first-round pick Chris Olave until, well, the last couple of weeks. Dennis Allen nearly lost his job because of these issues (and a defense that didn’t live up to expectation), but the Saints are entering 2024 with all of the good vibes because of how they finished. Carr finally found a consistent rhythm and pushed the ball down the field, giving New Orleans reason to believe he could be worth the four-year, $150 million deal he signed in last March. And as always, he proved his toughness, starting in every game despite suffering multiple injuries through the course of 2023.

Shook is right to say that Carr’s most consistent performances came at the end of the year, but it wasn’t against strong competition. New Orleans won four of their last five games but only beat one team with a winning record, the 9-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That low quality of competition is likely what kept Carr outside of the top 20 despite a late surge. He needs to start 2024 hot and carry that success over against another weak schedule.

Chiefs Patrick Mahomes ranks second on Nick Shook’s list of top NFL QBs

Patrick Mahomes ranked second on Nick Shook’s list of top NFL QBs after the #Chiefs’ Week 9 win over the #Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.

Though many pundits have noted that the 2023 season has been a difficult affair for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the reigning MVP still managed to take second place in NFL.com writer Nick Shook’s position rankings this week.

Every week brings a new challenge for the Chiefs, who have had a target on their backs during the 2023 season as the defending Super Bowl champions.
Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense faltered early in their 2023 campaign, but have recently shown flashes of the same dominance that came to define the unit’s herculean efforts in previous seasons.
A Week 11 win against the Philadelphia Eagles would almost certainly earn Mahomes the top spot on Shook’s rankings. Expect the reigning MVP to do his part to earn the Chiefs their eighth win of the season in the highly-anticipated Super Bowl LVII matchup on Monday Night Football in Kansas City’s next game on November 20 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Geno Smith tops list of NFL’s best deep throwers, Russell Wilson still top 10

The Seahawks traded away one of the greatest deep passers in NFL history last year and they somehow wound up with an upgrade in this part of the game.

The Seahawks traded away one of the greatest deep passers in NFL history last year and they somehow wound up with an upgrade in this part of the game. While he wasn’t perfect, Geno Smith did a lot of things well on the field in 2022. At the top of the list was his aggressiveness and high accuracy throwing the deep ball (passes of 20 air-yards or more).

Recently Nick Shook at NFL.com, made a list of the top 10 deep throwers in the league last year and Smith came in at No. 1. Some of the names on Shook’s list were expected – such as top-three superstars Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen – but there are also several surprises, including an appearance by the painfully boring Kirk Cousins and former Seattle starter Russell Wilson, who bombed in general his first year in Denver, but apparently is still thriving in this department.

Here’s how Shook’s complete top-10 deep-thrower list stacks up.

What’s the burning question for Seahawks ahead of the NFL draft?

Around the NFL writer Nick Shook answers one burning question for the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Seattle Seahawks had a successful first wave of free agency and are now looking ahead to the NFL draft, which is less than a month away.

Ahead of the big event, Around the NFL writer Nick Shook took a gander at all NFC rosters to answer one burning question for each team. Can the Seahawks ride their momentum from 2022 toward greater heights? he asked of Seattle.

“Pete Carroll did one heck of a job with his team last season, leading the Seahawks to the playoffs despite almost everyone (myself included) picking them to finish last in the NFC West,” Shook writes. “Much of the credit is due to veteran QB Geno Smith, who was paid accordingly this offseason and is facing heightened expectations for the first time since he was a youngster with the Jets.”

“Fresh off their 2022 success, a handful of notable additions were enticed to head to the Pacific Northwest and will be expected to contribute instantly,” Shook continues. “Count Devin Bush, Dre’Mont Jones, Julian Love, Jarran Reed and Bobby Wagner (with the latter two making homecomings) among that group. Seattle has the framework of a team that can seriously contend for the division and beyond — as long as Smith performs as he did in 2022.

“All they need to do is stay healthy and harness the same energy that landed them in Super Wild Card Weekend last season.”

Ravens’ 2022 rookie class earns high marks from NFL.com

The Ravens 2022 Draft class earned high marks from NFL.com

The Baltimore Ravens’ 2022 Draft could shape up to be one of the best in franchise history. Baltimore drafted 11 players and out of those selections, only one didn’t play a game for the Ravens, and that was six-round pick Tyler Badie who was released from the practice squad.

Nick Shook of NFL.com  graded each AFC North team’s 2022 draft class after the season. Baltimore received the highest grade out of the other AFC North teams with a B+ grade. The Pittsburgh Steelers also received a B+ grade, followed by the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns with C+ grades.

If the Ravens hit on at least five of the players drafted in 2022, it just shows how great of a scouting department general manager Eric DeCosta has in the organization.  With only five current selections in the 2023 draft, the team will need to hit on all of them this year or make some moves to acquire more during the draft.

Eagles DT Javon Hargrave lands behind Aaron Donald in ranking of NFL’s top-10 disruptors of 2021

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave lands behind Aaron Donald in a ranking of NFL’s top-10 disruptors of 2021

Javon Hargrave’s production improved drastically in year two with the Eagles and 2022 could be a career-defining season for a defensive tackle looking for another huge payday.

Philadelphia has a decision to make on Hargrave, who is entering the final year of a three-year, $39 million contract he signed as a free agent in 2020 after coming over from Pittsburgh.

Hargrave started 2021 off on a scorching pace, registering six sacks in the Eagles’ first five games before doubles teams and schemes slowed the talented defensive tackle down. Hargrave was a disruptor all year, and he landed high in an NFL.com ranking of the top-10 in the league, coming in at No. 9 on the list behind the Rams’ all-world defender, Aaron Donald.

Hargrave shined in his second season playing alongside Fletcher Cox, earning his first Pro Bowl nod. He posted a career-high 7.5 sacks and three turnovers caused via pressure. Cox capitalized on one of those turnovers, recovering a fumble forced by Hargrave for a touchdown against Dallas in Week 3.

Leonard Floyd came in at No. 10 on the list followed by Hargrave, Donald, Nick Bosa (7), Myles Garrett (6), and Yannick Ngakoue rounding out the top-10.

Micah Parsons (4), Maxx Crosby (3), T.J. Watt (2), and the Bengals’ Troy Hendrickson (1) rounded out the top-5.

Hargrave recorded 63 tackles (27 solo), 7.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass defense during 16 games last season and he could be even more impactful after the addition of Haason Reddick and Jordan Davis.

Seahawks guard Damien Lewis makes Shook’s All-Under-25 Team

Seattle Seahawks guard Damien Lewis joins wide receiver DK Metcalf on Nick Shook’s NFL All-Under-25 Team heading into the 2021 season.

Wide receiver DK Metcalf wasn’t the only Seattle Seahawk to land on Around The NFL writer Nick Shook’s All-Under-25 Team last week, offensive guard Damien Lewis also made the list.

Here’s what Shook had to say of the rising young star.

“Like Michael Onwenu, Lewis was a bit of a revelation in his first season,” Shook writes. “He started all 16 games, becoming one of two rookie O-linemen to play 500 or more pass-blocking snaps and allow three or fewer sacks in 2020 (joining fellow All-Under-25 Team member Tristan Wirfs).”

“Lewis was excellent as a road grader, earning the fifth-best run-blocking grade (83.5) among guards in 2020, per PFF,” Shook continues. “Lewis’ strong debut drew praise from the Pro Football Writers of America, who selected him as a member of their All-Rookie Team.”

Seahawks running back Chris Carson is NFL’s 10th-most explosive runner

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson ranks as the NFL’s 10th-most explosive runner for his performance in the 2019 regular season.

Fans and analysts are now looking ahead to the start of the regular season and guessing what to expect from their favorite players based on last year’s performances.

NFL.com’s Nick Shook recently put together his list of the top 10 most explosive runners in the league and it was Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson who earned the top honor.

Seahawks starting running back Chris Carson earned himself the No. 10 spot based on the following statistics:

Runs of 10-plus yards: 32.  10-plus run pct: 11.5.  15-plus mph pct: 18.

“Here’s a fun one,” Shook begins. “Carson is a bigger back who’s often overlooked because, unlike his beloved predecessor, he doesn’t eat Skittles or wear No. 24 in Seattle, but he was incredibly important to the Seahawks’ success in 2019 because of his ability to break tackles and consistently churn up yards.”

“His 50 15-plus mph runs and average of 4.3 yards gained after a defender closed within 1 yard proved how his explosiveness lasts just beyond the first burst, and it’s a big reason why he was able to gain 1,230 yards on the ground in less than a full season,” Shook continues. “A healthy Carson should return to again power the Seahawks’ rushing attack with more explosion, and more success should be expected.”

We should know sooner than later whether or not Carson is 100% coming off his season-ending hip injury in 2019.

Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett ranked 2nd-best pass catcher in 2019

Using Next Gen Stats, NFL writer Nick Shook determined Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett was the second-best pass catcher in 2019.

While fans around the country wait to find out whether or not there will be a 2020 NFL regular season, analysts are busy pumping out the stories to keep them engaged.

Around the NFL writer Nick Shook recently took a look at all the wide receivers from last year to put together his list of the 10 best pass catchers of 2019.

Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett landed in the No. 2 spot just behind Saints wideout Michael Thomas.

“Lockett’s catch-rate difference is nearly equal to Thomas’, but he achieved it via a much different method,” Shook explains. “Lockett enjoyed an average cushion of more than a yard above Thomas’ rate (6.1 to 4.8), and as a result, his targets came with over 4 more air yards on average. Interestingly, Lockett’s opponents rarely pressed him, doing so just 15.5 percent of the time, likely fearful of his potential to beat them deep after winning the jam at the line. That produced a lower yards-per-target average of 9.6, which is similar to Thomas’ (9.3) despite facing much different coverage at the snap.”

Here are the numbers he found for Lockett per Next Gen Stats: Catch rate: 74.5%. Expected catch rate: 61.9%. Difference: 12.6%.

“Lockett has a flair for making the tough catch, though, so it should come as little surprise that he tied Thomas atop the catch-rate difference leaderboard,” Shook continues. “Defenses should probably stop leaving him wide open, though; he owned the highest wide-open rate of this group (22.7%).”
