After dropping the conference series to Auburn last weekend, LSU is now projected as the No. 2 national seed in the NCAA tournament.

According to D1baseball, the Tigers will host a regional in Baton Rouge and play against [autotag]Cal State Fullerton[/autotag], [autotag]UTSA[/autotag], and [autotag]Nicholls[/autotag]. LSU is quite familiar with Nicholls. The Tigers are 1-1 against their in-state opponent with the last game resulting in a 6-5 loss in Baton Rouge.

UTSA is one of the hottest teams in the country right now. The Roadrunners are 36-12 overall this season and 19-4 in conference play. They’re a top-25 squad and possibly a top-15 team. They will give anyone they face a run for their money.

Cal State Fullerton is a team that is historically good at college baseball. Its name always seems to pop up around the time regional play starts. The Titans are 28-16 this season and 17-4 in conference play.

LSU’s next series will start on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT against Mississippi State. This will be the last home conference series of the season.

Saints to work out former LSU, Incarnate Word QB Lindsey Scott Jr.

The Saints plan to work out Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr., a late-round draft prospect whose college career began at LSU:

This is interesting: the New Orleans Saints plan to put former Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. through a workout ahead of the 2023 NFL draft, per FOX San Antonio’s Chuck Miketinac, who reports that Scott is finishing up rehab from an offseason knee scope procedure.

Scott previously participated in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl after completing 70.9% of his pass attempts for 4,686 yards and scoring 60 touchdown passes while adding 712 rushing yards and 11 touchdown runs for UIW in the Southland Conference, though he also threw 8 interceptions and fumbled 9 times.

That was Scott’s seventh and final season of college eligibility. His college career started by being recruited out of Zachary High School to play for former LSU Tigers head coach Les Miles; when Miles left in 2017, Scott transferred to East Mississippi Community College, Missouri, and Nicholls (where he threw to former Saints undrafted free agent wideout Dai’Jean Dixon) before making his way to Incarnate Word.

Now he’s projected to be a priority free agent signing after the 2023 NFL draft, though it’s possible Scott gets picked in the sixth or seventh round if he continues to do well in the pre-draft process. Many teams like the Saints defer to their veteran scouts and respected position coaches to stump for prospects they favor in the draft’s final rounds — so if Scott can make a strong impression in his upcoming workout, maybe someone in New Orleans makes the case for him on draft day.

The Saints could use another quarterback to develop behind Derek Carr, seeing as Jameis Winston is entering the last year of his contract as Carr’s backup, and someone line Scott might be a good long-term fit. That’s how former Saints backup Trevor Siemian got his start once upon a time with the Denver Broncos.

Why Nicholls Will Win

The Colonels didn’t show it off against South Alabama, but they have the offense to give ULM all sorts of problems.

The offense got stuffed last week in the 48-7 loss, but that was an anomaly. Nicholls knows how to get the chains moving, the offensive front is going to be much, much better this year at keeping defenses out of the backfield, and the O will be closer to 500 yards per game this year than the 165 of last week.

ULM doesn’t have the defense to hold up for 60 minutes if the Nicholls passing attack gets going.

Why ULM Will Win

Is that going to be Nicholls this year?

There were some key losses and this isn’t quite the same team as the one that exploded so much last year.

ULM has a good quarterback in Chandler Rogers to give the Colonels problems. the receivers are there to stretch the field, and on the other side, the defensive front will show a whole lot more after having problems with Texas to start the season.

For all the problems in the 52-10 loss, ULM had the ball for well over 35 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

Nicholls will play better than it did last week, ULM will play better than it did last week, and the two will combine to play an interesting game.

ULM will have to work to put this away. It’ll get up, and it’ll maintain the lead, but it’ll need a few late scoring drives to finally get out alive. It’s going to be work to get the scoring punch needed to relax.

Why Nicholls Will Win

The Colonels know how to run the ball.

Their funky attack is amazing at controlling the clock, winning on third downs, and not letting anyone behind the line. There’s a passing game, too, for the offense that averaged close to 500 yards per game, and South Alabama has to figure out what it wants to slow down.

Nicholls will turn the ball over.

South Alabama is loaded with veterans on both sides of the ball and was helped in a big way from the transfer portal. Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite will crank up a decent passing game and a good balance, but the focus will be on the defense.

The pressure will come from the outside, and the secondary will come up with at least two picks.

What’s Going To Happen

Nicholls gave Louisiana a huge push last season and made a nice run over the second half of the campaign – it’ll carry over.

South Alabama will be saved by a few takeaways, but it’ll struggle to keep up the pace at times with the Colonel offense moving up and down the field in a variety of ways.

There will be a lot of bending, but the Jaguars won’t quite break in a good battle.
