Thus far, the trade market has been quiet and the Bengals are even considering keeping Dalton as a veteran backup and mentor for their quarterback selection, which is expected to be Burrow.

It would be similar to when they selected Carson Palmer first overall in 2003 and had Jon Kitna as a mentor. The difference would be Burrow would play as a rookie while Palmer did not.

Recent reports suggest teams don’t want to trade for Dalton in the final year of his contract and pay him $17 million in 2020.

The Jaguars seem content with Gardner Minshew and just unloaded a less reliable starter in Nick Foles in a trade with the Chicago Bears. They already carry more than $18 million in dead money for Foles.

The Patriots make a ton of sense because they have Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham at quarterback after losing Tom Brady to free agency. They could draft one but if they don’t, Dalton would be the perfect fit. He is reliable and takes care of the ball. He could keep the Patriots competitive in a wide open AFC East division.

The Chargers already have a veteran in Tyrod Taylor, and are expected to select a quarterback in the draft to develop, so acquiring Dalton doesn’t make much sense.

If there are two best bets, it would be that either he stays in Cincinnati (+250) or lands with the Patriots after the draft (+750).

Yannick Ngakoue says Jalen Ramsey wasn’t crazy for his stance against Jags organization

Jacksonville Jaguars pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue is seemingly growing frustrated with his current situation as he remains on the team’s roster under the non-exclusive franchise tag. After expressing that he didn’t want a long-term deal earlier in the month, he reiterated those statements Tuesday by saying the organization was preventing him from taking care of his family and suggesting that both sides move on.

The 25 year old pass-rusher didn’t stop there, however, and took to Instagram to back his former teammate, Jalen Ramsey, who was traded last October. With Ramsey having issues with the organization, too, Ngakoue stated that Ramsey’s stance against the Jags organization was justified because he knew the truth about their front office.

As many can recall, Ramsey’s saga with the Jags started after a verbal altercation with Doug Marrone Week 2 when the Jags were playing the Houston Texans. That led to an interaction with then front office leader Tom Coughlin in which Ramsey says he was disrespected. Long story short, things got nasty and Ramsey demanded a trade, which resulted in the Los Angeles Rams picking him up for two first-round picks.

The Jags made an attempt to extend Ngakoue in July through a short-term deal, but according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, those negotiations ended abruptly. That led to Ngakoue taking a similar stance to Ramsey towards the organization, so it appears his mind might be set on sitting out if he isn’t traded.

With the draft coming up late next month, interest in Ngakoue should intensify and the Jags may be able to get another first-round pick for this year of next. In the meantime, it appears they will continue to take offers as none of them have seemingly wowed the Jags.

Watch: TE Hayden Hurst discusses trade to Atlanta

While unproven after just two NFL seasons, Hurst has the kind of skill-set to become a big part of Dirk Koetter’s offense.

The Atlanta Falcons traded a second-round pick to the Ravens for tight end Hayden Hurst shortly after Austin Hooper signed a monster deal with the Browns. While still unproven after just two NFL seasons, Hurst has the kind of skill-set to become a big part of Dirk Koetter’s offense.

Hooper thrived last year and Hurst should have every opportunity to show he can play in 2020. It’s also not the worst situation for the 2018 first-round pick, as gets to play on the same field as Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley and Todd Gurley.

Speaking with Falcons reporter Kelsey Conway, Hurst discussed the trade and what he thinks he can bring to Atlanta. Check the video out below, as shared by the team’s Twitter account:

Jags free agents:

  • The Jags have 20 free agents at the moment, per Over the Cap

Report: Jags trade Nick Foles to Bears for a compensatory fourth-round pick

A year after signing him, the Jags have moved on from veteran QB Nick Foles and traded him to the Chicago Bears.

Under Tom Coughlin’s leadership, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Nick Foles to the biggest free-agent contract in team history (a four-year deal worth $88 million) in hopes that he’d be a franchise quarterback. Now, a year later, they’ve decided to move on from the veteran.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jags will be trading Foles to the Chicago Bears and will receive a fourth-round compensatory pick for him. For the 2020 season, the Jags will save a projected amount of over three million towards the cap.

The Jags pranced on Foles last spring after he came off a run in which he replaced Carson Wentz late in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2017 season. He was able to propel them to and through the playoffs and was named the MVP of Super Bowl LII. That seemingly impressed Coughlin and company enough to take a swing on him last March and the rest is history.

Foles’ luck wasn’t as fortunate with the Jags as he sustained a broken collarbone Week 1 of the regular season against the Kansas City Chiefs. As a result, sixth-round rookie Gardner Minshew II had to step in until Week 11. When Foles was able to return from injury, he wasn’t able to find his groove, which resulted in Minshew being renamed the starter Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

By the end of the season, Minshew’s success outweighed that of Foles as the rookie finished the season 285-of-470 (60.6%) for 3,271 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, six picks, and was 6-6 as a starter. He was also named Pepsi Rookie of the Week seven times and was Snicker’s Hungriest Player of the Year for 2019.

Foles, on the other hand, was 77-of-117 (65.8%) for 736 yards, three touchdowns, and two picks. While under center he, unfortunately, wasn’t able to register a win with the Jags and was 0-4 as a starter in 2019.
Foles will now join his former offensive coordinator from the Eagles, Frank Reich, in Indy. It was expected that the Colts would be on the quarterback market, so many felt Foles could be an option for them from the jump.

Foles will now head to Chicago to join former Jags offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, who was also his positions coach in Philadelphia. He’ll likely be replacing current Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who hasn’t met expectations since he was drafted in the first-round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Best bets to acquire Cam Newton

Chicago Bears +140

The Bears have been very public about their interests in acquiring a veteran free agent to challenge incumbent starter Mitchell Trubisky in 2020. They had been loosely tied to Bridgewater, but now seem focused on either Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton or Jacksonville Jaguars QB Nick Foles.

Newton is a significant upgrade over both of those veterans, and in all likelihood over Trubisky, as well. Signed for just the 2020 season, he could allow the Bears to give Trubisky a much need refresh on the bench, before trying again with the former second overall pick in 2021.

Los Angeles Chargers +165

The Chargers allowed Philip Rivers to walk away in free agency and are now one of three teams picking at the top of the 2020 NFL Draft with a clear need at quarterback. With Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa likely to go to the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins, respectively, they may be fine settling for Jordan Love or Justin Herbert, or may choose to address another position of need.

Acquiring Newton allows the Chargers to address one of those other positions, while potentially targeting a rookie in the second or third round. If Newton flames out or proves to be not fully healthy, they could find themselves picking at the top of the 2021 draft in what’s expected to be a strong QB class, led by Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.

New England Patriots +450

The Patriots are the fourth team without a clear starting option for the 2020 season already on the roster. They’re unlikely to turn from Brady to 2019 backup Jarrett Stidham.

Fitting Newton into head coach Bill Belichick’s ball-control system seems the biggest challenge, but the Pats are quickly running out of viable options.

Jacksonville Jaguars +2000

Already looking to unload Foles after just one year and left largely unimpressed with Gardner Minshew following his rookie season, the Jaguars could use a positive splash to help change the franchise trajectory. Newton immediately injects some star power into the roster and finally inspires some confidence at the most important position.

Fantasy football reaction: Stefon Diggs traded to the Buffalo Bills

Disgruntled receiver Stefon Diggs was granted his trade wish, heading to the Buffalo Bills.

After voicing frustration with his role in 2019, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs posted a cryptic message on social media during the opening hours of free agency, and he eventually was indeed dealt to the Buffalo Bills for draft picks.

We will investigate the prospects of Minnesota’s fantasy football receivers in a future article. Today’s focus is on Diggs’ role with the Bills. Buffalo clearly has shown dedication to improve the talent around quarterback Josh Allen dating back to last offseason. WRs John Brown and Cole Beasley were free-agent additions to the Bills a year ago, and both played well throughout the year. Brown turns 30 this year, and Beasley’s game is rather one-dimensional. While serviceable, neither player has that coveted x-factor.

Entering 2019, Diggs was more of a glorified possession guy than anything, although he displayed the ability to shake free as the New Orleans Saints can attest. Last season, however, the Maryland product landed only 63 balls in 15 games but went for 17.9 yards per grab. His game in Minnesota has proven to be inconsistently productive, and most of his body of work points to him profiling as a WR2 in need of a standout opposite Diggs. Buffalo doesn’t have that going for them, so he’s going to be tasked with stepping up his game.

[lawrence-related id=449273]

The Bills have a talented running back in Devin Singletary, and the offensive line is sound. Young tight end Dawson Knox displayed potential as a rookie and has plenty of upside. The defense is among the best in the business, and the run-first system suggests Diggs doesn’t have sheer target volume on his side. Unlike 2018’s heavily utilized season (102-1,021-9), Diggs showed that doesn’t matter to sustain success. He posted career-best yardage in ’19 under a run-oriented offensive command from head coach Mike Zimmer.

Fantasy football takeaway

Diggs, 26, is prone to spurts of elite play and then disappearing. He has done it several times with Minnesota in multiple offenses. In Buffalo, he won’t have a roof over his head in the winter months, but he’s used to cold climates in general. The outlook is somewhere in the No. 2 PPR receiver territory as a ceiling and a consistently playable flex in any format.

Some fantasy footballers are bound to overvalue Diggs. While he does have a reasonable degree of potential to exceed expectations, Diggs comes with nearly as much of a chance to disappoint.

The sports world reacts on Twitter to the DeAndre Hopkins-David Johnson trade

The NFL’s offseason wheeling and dealing is in full force, and the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals have jumped out in front of the current pigskin musings with a trade that involved wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and running back David Johnson.

What would have been a head-scratcher of a deal had the sports world not been locked in a room with the entire family fighting over the mobile devices and television remote has now intensified from a ‘topical depression’ into a social media hurricane.

It began with the Cardinals’ Patrick Peterson crafting a near-perfect tweet, summarizing the magnitude of the deal without going over the 140-character limit:

From there, the good, the bad, and the insightful thoughts and reactions (the memes) from around the sports world landed in the Twitter cosmos.

Of course, there is this guy…

And this guy…

The best Faux Account take goes to:

Was this 2017 snippet from NFL Films a precursor to today’s news?

How will this deal play out? That remains to been, as usual. But this tweet from SportsCenter does paint (or, probably burn into the minds of the Texans fan base) what was lost and gained:

What could the Ravens realistically trade Matthew Judon for this offseason?

Given the trades of last season, we have a pretty good idea what the Baltimore Ravens could get if they wanted to trade OLB Matthew Judon

The Baltimore Ravens announced they have officially used the franchise tag to retain outside linebacker Matthew Judon for the 2020 NFL season. However, that doesn’t mean he’ll actually be playing for Baltimore come Week 1.

All offseason, I’ve speculated that tagging and trading Judon might be in the Ravens’ best interests. If Baltimore feels they won’t be able to get a deal done at a value they like, trading Judon for draft capital would make a ton of sense as they look to rebuild their depth chart at the position. But just what would the going rate for Judon actually be?

Of course, everything depends on the final market for pass rushers and the level of interest the rest of the league would show. A single team inquiring about Judon likely wouldn’t return a ton of value whereas if a handful of teams are interested in pulling off a trade, the Ravens could drive up the asking price. The fewer premier pass rushers available will likely dictate all of this and with several expected to get the franchise tag this offseason as well, it could lead to Judon being the big prize of free agency.

To figure out the floor and ceiling for Judon, we have to look to previous trades for pass rushers. Luckily for us, last season saw a bevy of deals pulled off, so we have a pretty good indication of what to expect here.

2019 pass rusher trades:

  • New England Patriots Michael Bennett to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2021 seventh-round pick (midseason before trade deadline)
  • Miami Dolphins Robert Quinn to the Cowboys for a 2020 sixth-round pick
  • Cleveland Browns Emmanuel Ogbah to the Kansas City Chiefs for safety Eric Murray
  • Philadelphia Eagles Michael Bennett and a 2020 seventh-round pick to Patriots for a 2020 fifth-round pick
  • Chiefs Dee Ford to San Francisco 49ers for a 2020 second-round pick
  • Seattle Seahawks Frank Clark and a 2019 third-round pick to Kansas City for a 2019 first- and a third-round pick, as well as a 2020 second-round pick
  • Houston Texans Jadeveon Clowney to Seahawks for Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo and a 2020 third-round pick

Of that group, Ford, Clark and Clowney are the ones that most clearly mirror the Ravens’ and Judon’s situation now. All three had been franchise tagged because a long-term deal couldn’t be figured out. For Clark and Ford, they ended up being traded to teams that were willing to pony up the cash to lock them up.

For the Chiefs, they jettisoned Ford, who ended up getting a five-year contract worth $85 million ($17 million a year average) from the 49ers, according to Over The Cap. Kansas City ended up trading for Clark, giving him a five-year deal worth $104 million ($20.8 million a year average), according to OTC. Clowney ended up being a one-year rental that will likely be worth a third-round compensatory pick if he signs elsewhere this offseason as a free agent.

Let’s better break down what the floor, ceiling and realistic trade values are for Judon given that history and what the Ravens should do in those situations.
