PFF: Chargers ‘can’t afford to lose’ this free agent

PFF named one pending free agent that each team in the NFL “can’t afford” to lose.

Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger revealed one free agent for every team they couldn’t afford to lose and tight end Gerald Everett was their submission for the Chargers.

Here is what Spielberger had to say on why Los Angeles shouldn’t let Everett walk.

The Chargers and their new regime are in for an offseason of major contraction, with so many potential cut or trade candidates. But we’ll get to that later. For now, retaining a solid tight end who has good chemistry with Justin Herbert makes sense.

Everett’s 28 forced missed tackles over the past two seasons are the second most among tight ends, and Herbert was never afraid to look his way in high-leverage moments down in the red zone and on third downs.

Signed two offseasons ago, Everett was a vital piece in the passing game. Everett proved to be reliable with his yards-after-the-catch ability and clutchness on money downs.

Everett finished with career-highs in receptions (55) and receiving yards (555) in his first season with the Chargers. This past season, he still managed to surpass the 50-catch mark.

Everett and Justin Herbert had a solid connection the past two seasons, and it’s worth noting that new offensive coordinator Greg Roman uses a heavy dose of tight ends in his scheme.

The only thing that Everett has going against him is that he doesn’t offer much as a blocker, which Roman likes to have in his tight ends.

If the Chargers elect to let Everett walk, they could upgrade the positional room in the draft with someone like Brock Bowers with the No. 5 overall selection and a later pick.

Jets players set to become free agents this offseason

Jets players set to become free agents this offseason

The Jets have entered their offseason and things could look quite different in New York for the 2024 season. Plenty of contributors from this past season are set to hit the open market and the Jets will have plenty of tough decisions to make regarding whether to bring those players back.

For now, we’ll simply run down the players set to become free agents this offseason. These players include multiple starters from this past season as well as the Jets’ team leader in sacks.

49ers to sign veteran DB Logan Ryan

The #49ers are adding a veteran DB to their secondary with injuries piling up at safety:

The 49ers are adding some veteran depth in their secondary. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday reported San Francisco is set to sign veteran defensive back Logan Ryan.

Ryan, 32, played cornerback early in his career, but moved to safety over the last three seasons. He spent four years in New England and three with the Titans as a CB before moving to safety in his two years with the Giants and one year with the Buccaneers last year.

It’s unclear whether the 49ers plan to add Ryan to their practice squad or active roster. Sunday in Philadelphia they only had rookie Ji’Ayir Brown and veteran Tashaun Gipson at safety with newly-signed Erik Harris working as a backup and special teams option. It would make sense if Ryan was an addition to the active roster since Talanoa Hufanga and George Odum are both likely out for the season.

Ryan would give San Francisco a veteran defender to take over if one of Gipson or Brown gets hurt.

In 10 seasons Ryan has played in 149 games with 121 starts. He has 742 tackles, 13.0 sacks, 19 interceptions and 98 pass breakups.

6 free agents available who could help 49ers

6 free agents who could help the 49ers on both sides of the ball.

The 49ers’ major spending is likely done for the offseason, and their quest for additional roster reinforcements will come in large part via the NFL draft. They hold 11 selections in this year’s draft, but there are a handful of players still available in free agency who can help San Francisco.

We went through a few defensive ends they could sign to address one of their needs, but there are free agents all over the positional spectrum who could still help the 49ers check some offseason boxes.

Chargers not tendering Donald Parham, will be free agent

One of the Chargers’ more vital restricted free agents will be hitting the market.

One of the Chargers’ more vital restricted free agents will be hitting the market.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Monday that Los Angeles was unable to come to terms with tight end Donald Parham Jr. on a new contract, meaning that Parham will become a free agent. The Bolts had elected not to tender Parham in pursuit of a contract extension, but it appears the two sides were too far apart on what such a deal would look like.

LA now enters the 2023 league year with Gerald Everett and Tre’ McKitty under contract after speculation that Everett could be released for cap savings. Instead, the Chargers kept Everett as negotiations with Parham continued, perhaps a sign that negotiations never advanced toward a new deal.

Parham’s free agency now also enlarges the likelihood that the Chargers select a tight end early on in this year’s draft.

6 underrated free agents worth targeting for the Seahawks

Here are six from the list that make sense for Seattle.

The NFL’s legal tampering window opens today at 9 a.m. west coast time, allowing teams to negotiate with agents for players that are about to hit the market. Teams and players can agree to deals but nothing is official until the new league year begins on Wedensday afternoon.

As for the Seattle Seahawks, they pulled off a remarkable heist last week, re-signing veteran quarterback Geno Smith to a super team-friendly deal with only a $10.1 million cap hit for the 2023 season. Now Seattle has about $20.2 million leftover to sign other free agents and pay their draft class. With the rookies taking about half that amount, they are firmly out of the market for acquiring any big-name veterans.

However, there are an unusual number of underrated options out there that could be had for a discount this year. This morning Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire listed underrated free agents at every position. Here are six from the list that make sense for Seattle.

1 pending free agent Chargers could target from each NFL team

Here’s a look at one pending free agent from each NFL team that could interest the Chargers.

The Chargers won’t be as aggressive as they have been in recent years regarding signing free agents.

Even after making moves to get cap compliant before the new league year begins on Wednesday, Los Angeles’ priorities will be to re-sign some of their players and extend Justin Herbert.

After that, they should have some spendings available to sign some low-cost players.

That said, here is one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: NFC East Edition

Listing one free agent from the Cowboys, Giants, Commanders and Eagles who could be a fit for the Chargers.

The Chargers won’t be as aggressive as they have been in recent years when it comes to signing free agents.

While they’re cash-strapped, general manager Tom Telesco will likely make some moves to have some spendings available to them so they can sign some low-cost players.

That said, I will list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A.

Next up is the NFC East.

The NFL’s top 151 upcoming free agents, Nos. 1-75

The NFL’s new league year is just around the corner, so Doug Farrar put together his list of the top 151 free agents. Here’s 1-75, from Javon Hargrave to Linval Joseph.

Before Derek Carr moved to New Orleans, Geno Smith stayed in Seattle, Daniel Jones got a big new deal, and Lamar Jackson led a list of franchise-tagged players that also included Commanders defensive lineman Daron Payne, Cowboys running back Tony Pollard, Giants running back Saquon Barkley, Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, and Jaguars tight end Evan Engram, the upcoming 2023 class of free agents was packed with marquee names.

Now that those names are off the board, this class is less exceptional in a headline sense — but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t still all kinds of players that could positively alter the course of any team. This class is now wider than it is tall, but it’s very wide. Which is to say, there is impressive talent soon to be available when the new league year begins at 4:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday March 15. And a lot of that talent will be more available to the teams that have really done their homework.

With that in mind, we have done our homework here at Touchdown Wire. This list of the top 151 players who will be free agents when the new league year starts is based on comprehensive tape study, and scouring all kinds of metrics to make sure everything matches up as much as possible in the inexact science of player evaluation. The guys up top are (or should be) still marquee names, though most of them are not offensive skill players.

As you go down the list, you’ll see players who may have tried their best in the wrong systems, players who may have failed to live up to their potential at this time, players who are just getting the hang of things, and players who might just need the right circumstance and opportunity.

Here, without further ado, is our list of the top 151 free agents for the 2023 league year, starting with Nos. 1-75.
