2024 NFL free agency: 30 potential targets for the Eagles

We’re looking at the top 30 potential NFL free agent targets for the Philadelphia Eagles

The 2024 NFL offseason is officially underway after the Chiefs’ 25-22 win over the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII from Las Vegas.

The league will take the next month to catch its breath, but the slowdown won’t last long, as potential free agents will face the franchise tag, and all 32 teams will head to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine at the end of February.

The 2024 cap is expected to exceed $240 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, and where things currently stand, Philadelphia is expected to have roughly $20,284,984 in cap space.

The Birds are set to have 20 pending free agents, and with another likely retool schedule on defense, the organization could conjure up a scheme for more flexibility.

According to Over the Cap’s potential transaction chart, the Eagles can easily create $35.4 million in cap space by making these five moves.

With the new league year fast approaching, we’re looking at 30 potential free-agent targets for Philadelphia.

Dolphins elevate LB, CB from practice squad for matchup with the Chiefs

Miami brings up two to the active roster for Saturday.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with one player ruled out and four questionable for their wild-card matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use both of their practice squad elevations to bring up veteran linebacker Malik Reed and cornerback Ethan Bonner to the active roster for the game.

Bonner, 24, has been elevated three times this season, but he’s only played in two of Miami’s games. He’s totaled 26 special teams snaps and 11 on defense. He’s recorded one tackle and one pass defensed.

Reed, 27, was just signed to the practice squad this week. He played in four games with the Las Vegas Raiders this season, recording three tackles. He spent training camp and the preseason with Miami and spent his first three NFL seasons playing for now Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in Denver.

Dolphins sign LB Melvin Ingram to their active roster

The Dolphins moved a veteran LB to their active roster from the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins have had a number of injuries at linebacker in recent weeks, as they’ve lost Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Jerome Baker, Andrew Van Ginkel, Cameron Goode and Alexander Johnson for the season.

After signing Justin Houston and Bruce Irvin on Tuesday, the Dolphins had one open roster spot left, and they filled it by signing Melvin Ingram off of their own practice squad on Wednesday.

Ingram, 34, was elevated for Miami’s final three games of the season, recording seven tackles (one for a loss) and 1.5 sacks on 47% of the team’s defensive snaps.

The Dolphins filled Ingram’s practice squad spot with Malik Reed, who the team was reported to sign on Tuesday.

With all of the losses at the position, it wouldn’t be surprising to see all three new members of the roster and practice squad play on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dolphins signing LBs Bruce Irvin, Malik Reed

Miami adding two more on the edge.

The Miami Dolphins have had some bad luck with injuries at the linebacker position in recent weeks, losing Bradley Chubb,  Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel, Jerome Baker and Cameron Goode for the season.

After reportedly signing Justin Houston on Monday, the Dolphins are adding more talent on the edge, as they’re signing Bruce Irvin to the active roster and Malik Reed to their practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Irvin, 36, was once among the best outside linebacker in the game, recording 56.5 sacks in his career. He played just two games for the Detroit Lions this season recording just one sack.

Reed, 27, is probably a familiar name to Dolphins fans, as he spent this past offseason with Miami and was on the roster through the preseason. Since then, he’s played four games for the Las Vegas Raiders this season, recording three tackles.

Miami needs all the help they can get on the edge, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see these guys get meaningful reps on Saturday.

Raiders waive DE Malik Reed, sign C Hroniss Grasu

Raiders waive DE Malik Reed, sign C Hroniss Grasu

Thursday the Raiders made a couple roster moves. They signed center Hroniss Grasu to the active roster and waived defensive end Malik Reed to clear a spot for him.

Both players had been on the Raiders’ practice squad this season. Reed was originally added to the practice squad in late September and was elevated once. He was then signed to the active roster in early November, appearing in four games. He had three combined tackles with no sacks or QB hits.

Grasu spent the offseason with the Raiders and was placed on the practice squad to begin the season. He had been elevated three times, seeing snaps for the first time last week against the Chargers due to the injury to Andre James.

James injured his ankle two weeks ago against the Vikings and has been replaced by Dylan Parham who shifted over from left guard. Grasu’s addition to the roster could signal that James is not close to returning.

Raiders sign LB Malik Reed off practice squad, waive WR Kristian Wilkerson

For the second time since the depature of Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler, the Raiders new head coach/GM duo of Antonio Pierce and Champ Kelly have parted ways with offseason free agent additions.

Thursday the team announced they had waived cornerback David Long Jr. Saturday they said goodbye to wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson.

In both cases, the team did so in order to add a linebacker. Thursday it was signing Jaylon Smith off the Saints practice squad. And Saturday it was signing Malik Reed off their own practice squad.

Reed went undrafted out of Nevada in 2019. He played three seasons with the Broncos before being traded to the Steelers. He hit free agency this offseason, signing with the Dolphins, but was released following training camp. He has been on the Raiders practice squad much of this season.

Along with Reed’s signing, the Raiders also elevated WR DJ Turner and G Netane Muti from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Giants.

Ranking the Dolphins’ offseason additions, from least to most significant

Miami brought in nine new players this offseason.

The Miami Dolphins were quite active this offseason in acquiring new players to improve the schemes on all sides of the ball. They added nine new players through free agency and trades that include four on offense, four on defense and one on special teams.

All of these signings should help the Dolphins make a return trip to the postseason in 2023 if not make a run that the fan base can be proud of.

Before we get to the draft, we’ll rank the least to most significant additions to Miami’s roster for the second season under head coach Mike McDaniel.

Examining the terms of new Dolphins LB Malik Reed’s contract

Over half of the contract is guaranteed.

The Miami Dolphins entered the offseason with holes all over their defense, but edge rusher wasn’t necessarily a huge one.

Yes, Miami had Andrew Van Ginkel and Melvin Ingram hitting free agency, but they still had Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb to be their mainstays.

However, general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel decided to sign free-agent linebacker Malik Reed, reuniting him with Chubb and his former head coach in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

According to Over the Cap, Reed and the Dolphins agreed to a one-year deal worth roughly $1.23 million. Reed will earn $1.08 million in a base salary ($650,000 of which is guaranteed), $100,000 in a signing bonus and another $52,500 in a roster bonus. His cap hit for 2023 is set to be about $1.09.

With over half of the contract guaranteed, it seems pretty unlikely that Miami would move on from the linebacker before the season began. The Dolphins would save just $342,500 by releasing Reed while incurring a dead cap penalty of $750,000.

Reed has the best year of his career under Fangio, so Miami is hoping that he can recapture some of the magic, even if it’s in a smaller role behind Phillips and Chubb.

Malik Reed will be entering his fifth season in the NFL as a new addition to a deep linebacker room. Reed started his career with the Denver Broncos where he played three seasons. After a one-year stint in Pittsburgh, the 26-year-old aims to be a key contributor for a team on the rise in the AFC.

There are multiple reasons why fans should be excited about this addition. Here are some important things to analyze as to why Reed will be an important piece of the 2023 team.

Looking back at the LB before he joined the team.

The Miami Dolphins addressed a number of their defensive woes this offseason by trading for Jalen Ramsey, and signing a trio of defensive free agents in DeShon Elliott, David Long and Malik Reed.

Reed joins Miami after a year with the Pittsburgh Steelers and four with the Denver Broncos. During his time with Denver, he played alongside Bradley Chubb and played for Vic Fangio, both of whom are with the Dolphins.

While it’s unclear what role Reed will play this upcoming season, it’s fair to say that he’ll be a welcomed addition to a group that struggled in 2022.

However, before he steps on the field for the first time, let’s take a look at some of the best images from his previous stops.
