Chargers sign former Packers OLB Justin Hollins ahead of Week 11 showdown

The Chargers signed former Packers OLB Justin Hollins ahead of Sunday’s showdown in Green Bay.

The Los Angeles Chargers, who go to Green Bay to play the Packers on Sunday, signed former Packers outside linebacker Justin Hollins off the practice squad of the New York Giants on Wednesday.

Hollins arrived in Green Bay off of waivers in November of last season. He returned to start 2023, made the 53-man roster coming out of training camp and played in four games before being released. He signed with the Giants practice squad on Oct. 24, playing in one game for New York.

Any worry about Hollins providing the Chargers with valuable intel on the Packers, either offensively or defensively?

“I don’t know,” coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday. “I’m sure they could get something out of it. I think more than anything, they are getting a really good football player. I have a lot of respect for Justin Hollins. They added another piece to a good pass-rush already.”

Hollins produced nine tackles, 2.5 sacks and four quarterback hits over 10 games with the Packers.

In Los Angeles, Hollins will replace outside linebacker Chris Rumph II, who was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.

If active on Sunday, Hollins will be on the field wearing No. 58 for the Chargers.

Chargers sign EDGE Justin Hollins

The Chargers added an edge defender in wake of Chris Rumph’s season-ending injury.

The Chargers placed edge defender Chris Rumph II on injured reserve and signed Justin Hollins to the active roster on Wednesday.

In addition, Los Angeles signed tight end Stephen Anderson to the practice squad and released safety Mark Webb from the practice squad.

Hollins was drafted by the Broncos in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft out of the University of Oregon. He has played in 60 games and started in seven for the Broncos, Rams, Packers and Giants.

Brandon Staley was Hollins’ defensive coordinator in 2019 with the Broncos and in 2020 with the Rams. In those two seasons, Hollins combined for 20 quarterback pressures, 13 hurries and five sacks.

Hollins is a year removed from his best single season as a pro, as he finished with 15 pressures, eight hurries and four sacks.

Giants place Darren Waller, Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed TE Darren Waller and QB Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve along with several other transactions.

The New York Giants have placed tight end Darren Waller (hamstring) and quarterback Tyrod Taylor (ribs) on injured reserve (IR). The pair will miss at least the next four games.

Waller suffered a hamstring injury during a Week 8 loss to the New York Jets that he says was unrelated to the hamstring issue he dealt with earlier this year.

Taylor was injured in the same game and transported to a local hospital where he remained overnight.

Waller and Taylor join kicker Graham Gano, who was also placed on IR this week with a knee injury. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days but stopped short of saying his season is over.

“No. Nobody’s told me that,” Gano said when asked if he’s been told his season is over. “But my mindset is always if I’m dealing with some adversity, just attack it, and do what I can with it.”

In place of Gano, the Giants signed kicker Cade York off the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad. They also signed kicker Randy Bullock to the practice squad and elevated him ahead of their Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, providing them with two active kickers for the game.

Additionally, the Giants elevated linebacker Justin Hollins from the practice squad and signed tight end Lawrence Cager to their 53-man roster from the reserve unit.

Rookie Tommy DeVito will serve as the backup quarterback on Sunday.

Giants place two on IR, make other roster moves

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Tuesday, impacting both their 53-man roster and their practice squad.

The New York Giants made several roster moves on Tuesday, signing veteran kick/punt returner Gunner Olszewski and outside linebacker Justin Hollins to the practice squad.

Offensive tackle Matt Peart (shoulder) and running back Eric Gray (calf) were placed on injured reserve.

In other moves, the Giants added running back Jashuan Corbin to the roster, claiming him off the Carolina Panthers practice squad and claimed running back Deon Jackson, a high school teammate of Andrew Thomas and college teammate of Daniel Jones, off waivers from Cleveland.

The moves should give the Giants a little more stability on special teams, where they have been struggling with what should be second-nature functions.

Corbin spent last season on the Giants’ practice squad after getting cut after training camp. He was elevated to the active roster for one game during the postseason and spent all summer with the team only to get cut again.

Hollins has played in 55 NFL games in his career for the Denver Broncos, Laos Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers. He won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Rams.

Former Packers OLB Justin Hollins signs with Giants practice squad

Justin Hollins won’t be returning to the Packers. The OLB signed with the Giants practice squad.

After being released twice in the last month, outside linebacker Justin Hollins left Green Bay to sign with the practice squad of the New York Giants. The signing was announced by the Giants on Tuesday.

The Packers released Hollins on Saturday to make room for cornerback Eric Stokes, who was activated from the PUP list to the 53-man roster. Earlier in the month, Hollins was released to make room for running back Patrick Taylor before playing the Las Vegas Raiders. Now, both Hollins and Taylor (New England Patriots) are on practice squads elsewhere.

Although he made the 53-man roster coming out of training camp and was re-signed after being released for the first time in October, Hollins was clearly one of the team’s bottom-of-the-roster players and likely sought a new opportunity elsewhere. The Packers have 2022 fifth-round pick Kingsley Enagbare, 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness and developmental prospect Brenton Cox Jr. as backups at edge rusher.

Acquired via waivers in 2022, Hollins played in 10 games for the Packers over the last two seasons, tallying 2.5 sacks, nine tackles (three tackles for loss) and four quarterback hits. He was on the field for 212 defensive snaps and 28 special teams snaps.

Hollins, 27, was originally a fifth-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2019. He’s played in 59 career games.

Packers release OLB Justin Hollins for second time this month

For the second time in 12 days, the Packers released OLB Justin Hollins.

For the second time in three weeks, the Green Bay Packers released outside linebacker Justin Hollins the day before a game to make room for a new player on the 53-man roster.

On Saturday, the Packers released Hollins to make room for cornerback Eric Stokes, who was activated off the physically unable to perform list and will be available to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos. On Oct. 9, the Packers released Hollins in order to add running back Patrick Taylor to the 53-man roster ahead of facing the Raiders in Las Vegas. Taylor was released and Hollins added back to the roster a day later.

With Stokes ready to return and six outside linebackers on the roster, Hollins was the odd man out again.

A 2019 fifth-round pick of the Broncos, Hollins was on the field for 84 defensive snaps and 20 special teams snaps over the Packers’ first four games. He delivered two pressures, seven total tackles and two stops. On special teams, 15 of his 20 snaps came on punt return.

Once again off the roster, Hollins won’t get a chance to play against his former team.

It’s unclear if the Packers will have room to add Hollins back to the roster next week, or if the practice squad is an option. It’s possible this is the end of the road between the two parties. Rashan Gary is inching closer to a full-time role, rookie Lukas Van Ness and second-year edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare are dominating snaps with the second-team, and the Packers like Brenton Cox Jr. as a developmental player at the position.

Packers sign RB Patrick Taylor from practice squad, release OLB Justin Hollins

The Packers signed RB Patrick Taylor from the practice squad. To clear a roster spot, the team released OLB Justin Hollins.

In a move made necessary by the on-going injury situation at running back, the Green Bay Packers signed running back Patrick Taylor from the practice squad and released outside linebacker Justin Hollins in the hours before Monday night’s showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

The move is an obvious reaction to the unlikelihood of having running back Aaron Jones available on Monday night. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Jones is unlikely to play, and Taylor’s promotion suggests Jones — who injured his hamstring in Week 1 — won’t be available for the third time in four weeks.

Taylor was elevated from the practice squad during each of the first three weeks. Players are allowed three elevations per season, so the Packers needed to sign Taylor to the 53-man roster to have him on the field against the Raiders.

During the first three weeks, Taylor carried nine times for 29 yards and caught three passes for 23 yards. He was on the field for 49 snaps on offense and 29 snaps on special teams. The Packers like his versatility, particularly as a receiver, blocker and contributor on special teams.

Without Jones, the Packers would be down to Taylor, A.J. Dillon and Emanuel Wilson at running back. Dillon is averaging 2.7 yards per carry and Wilson is a rookie with only five career carries in the NFL.

To clear a roster spot, the Packers released Hollins, a veteran edge rusher who was on the field for 20 or more defensive snaps during each of the first three weeks. The Packers were carrying six outside linebackers on the 53-man roster prior to Hollins’ release. His departure suggests Rashan Gary is closer to being a full-time player and rookie Lukas Van Ness is ready for a bigger role. Rookie Brenton Cox Jr. now becomes the No. 5 edge rusher.

Hollins, 27, will go on waivers. The Packers originally added Hollins off waivers from the Rams last year. He played 84 snaps on defense for the Packers through the first four games of the 2023 season, tallying five tackles, two stops and two pressures. Last week, Hollins was on the field for a season-low 13 snaps vs. the Lions.

Packers re-sign edge rusher Justin Hollins with one-year deal

The Packers are re-signing edge rusher Justin Hollins with a one-year deal.

The Green Bay Packers are bringing back edge rusher Justin Hollins on a one-year deal. Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team was the first to report the re-signing.

A posting on Twitter from Hollins appeared to confirm the report.

Hollins (6-5, 248) was claimed off waivers by the Packers from the Los Angeles Rams in November of last year. The 27-year-old went on to play in six games for the Packers, producing nine pressures, 2.5 sacks, four quarterback hits and three tackles for loss over 128 snaps on defense and eight more on special teams.

Among his highlight plays were a sack of Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia and a sack of Baker Mayfield during a Monday night win at Lambeau Field. He played at least 14 snaps in all six games for the Packers in 2022.

Hollins is experienced in Joe Barry’s style of defense and will provide experienced depth behind expected starters Preston Smith and Rashan Gary in 2023. He could even play important snaps early in the year if the Packers are cautious with Gary, who tore his ACL in Week 9 last season and isn’t guaranteed to be ready for a full-time role by Week 1 in 2023.

An unrestricted free agent, Hollins visited the New York Giants on Wednesday before agreeing to return to Green Bay.

Signing Hollins to a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal should not prevent the Packers from investing a high draft pick at edge rusher, a premium position.

Hollins was originally a fifth-round pick of the Rams in 2019. He’s played in 55 career games and has 9.5 career sacks.

Giants met with free agent LB Justin Hollins

The New York Giants held a series of visits on Wednesday which included free agent linebacker Justin Hollins.

The New York Giants were quite busy on Wednesday, sending nine representatives — including Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll — to the Ohio State Pro Day while free agent visits were held back in East Rutherford.

In addition to cornerback Kris Boyd and center J.C. Hassenauer, the Giants also hosted linebacker Justin Hollins.

The 27-year-old Hollins was originally a fifth-round pick of the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL draft. He was waived after his first season with the team and went on to spend the next two-plus years with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams waived Hollins in November of last year and he was quickly claimed by the Green Bay Packers, where he played out the rest of the season.

In 55 career games (seven starts), Hollins has recorded 106 tackles (63 solo, nine for a loss), 15 QB hits, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and three passes defensed.

With Oshane Ximines still unsigned, the Giants may view Hollins as a potential replacement or depth option.

Despite the three visits, the Giants did not make any new signings on Wednesday.
