New York judge dismisses lawsuit seeking to overturn decision to postpone high school sports

A Nassau County Supreme Court judge dismissed a lawsuit by Massapequa’s school district that sought to play high school sports this fall.

A Nassau County Supreme Court judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by Massapequa’s school district that sought to overturn the decision to not play high school sports this fall.

According to Newsday’s Robert Rubin, Justice Jack L. Libert ruled that Section VIII, the governing body for high school sports in Nassau County, “acted within the lawful scope of its authority” when it decided against playing high school sports in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Section VIII’s plan for play compresses all three sports seasons between January and June, with fall sports being played in March and April.

On Aug. 24, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued guidance permitting lower-risk sports such as cross country, field hockey, soccer, swimming and tennis to begin practice and play on Sept. 21. Two days later, the Section VIII Superintendents’ Board unanimously voted to delay the start of fall sports “out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety” of students.

“We looked out for the health of our kids,” Section VIII executive director Pat Pizzarelli said of the decision. “We all want our kids out there competing, but it has to be done safely.”

Less than two weeks after Section VIII’s decision to postpone the fall sports season, Massapequa’s school district filed court papers on Sept. 9. On Sept. 17, the Section VIII Athletic Council approved a motion to delay the fall season by a 12-2 vote with two abstentions.

Of Massapequa’s petition, Libert said that Section VIII’s decision had to be made by the Athletic Council and that Massapequa skipped over the appeals process before bringing the suit, failing to “exhaust its administrative remedies.” Libert concluded that even if Massapequa had followed proper procedure, Section VIII’s decision to postpone fall sports “was supported by substantial evidence and was not “arbitrary and capricious,” as Massapequa had claimed.

“I wish it hadn’t come to this — doing this in court,” Pizzarelli said. “We’re still learning things about this disease. Numbers are going up in a lot of places. Protecting the health of the kids has to be the priority.”

Despite Massapequa’s lawsuit falling short, there is still hope for Section VIII’s decision to be overturned. The Island Trees school district filed an appeal of the decision with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. An appeals hearing for both sides was held last Friday and a ruling is expected before the end of this week.

Mock Draft Monday: Sam Cosmi to protect Trevor Lawrence in New York

Every Monday, LonghornsWire looks to round up top mock drafts. This week, CBS Sports has released a mock draft with one UT first-round pick.

Each and every Monday, LonghornsWire looks to round up the top mock drafts. This week, CBS Sports has released its latest mock draft with only one first-round pick for Texas. To no surprise, it is the Longhorns’ starting left tackle, Samuel Cosmi.

CBS Sports projects Cosmi to New York

When the Seattle traded for All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, the New York Jets acquired the Seahawks’ 2021 first-round pick. With Seattle being one of the top teams in the NFC, CBS Sports projects the Jets’ will make a selection in the bottom five of the first-round.

In much need of offensive line help for current starting quarterback Sam Darnold, Samuel Cosmi is mocked at No. 28. Six total offensive linemen was selected before the current Texas star, including three tackles.

CBS’ Chris Trapasso says Cosmi “glides in pass protection” and ranks him as the No. 2 tackle in the draft. Only Oregon’s Penei Sewell, the mocked No. 1 overall pick to the Cincinnati Bengals, is above the Longhorn.

After the Jets selected Mekhi Becton with the No. 11 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Becton and Cosmi would be the tackles of the future in New York. Would they be protecting Sam Darnold for the next decade? Or could the Jets move on and draft another college superstar?

With the Jets off to an 0-2 start, they are considered one of the favorites to end up with a top-three draft pick. CBS Sports projects New York ends up with the No. 2 overall pick, selecting current Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

This would leave a quarterback battle between two top-five pick quarterbacks in Lawrence and Darnold.

Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, is under contract until the after 2021 season. From there, the Jets will have to decide if they want to pick up his player option. If they do not, he could leave New York one year after Lawrence was selected.

Considered a no doubt, slam dunk quarterback prospect, Lawrence could finally turn the forever-struggling Jets around into a consistent franchise. Already starting with a strong left or right tackle such as Cosmi would fast forward the rebuild even more.

Bills vs. Jets: 3 keys to the game for both teams

Three keys for the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets ahead of Week 1, 2020 matchup.

For the 120th time in professional football history, the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets square off this Sunday, with this Week 1 matchup from Orchard Park.

The Bills lead the series between the two, 63-56, however, it’s a new year and the “any given Sunday” mentality has never gone away. That’s double the case during a divisional matchup, so both teams will have to pull the right strings in order to walk away with a victory here.

With that, let’s take a look at the keys to victory for both the Bills and Jets heading into the season opener:

Jets’ 3 keys to the game

Saved by your Bell

One thing most can agree on looking at the Jets offense is that running back Le’Veon Bell is the best weapon at quarterback Sam Darnold‘s disposal. While it was lower than expected from Bell last season, he still accumulated over 1100 yards of offense, between rushing and receiving. Bell should forever be Darnold’s safety valve.

Even Tom Brady isn’t shy about throwing short passes to running backs, such as James White during his time with the Patriots, who would turn those short passes for a big gain. Bell should be game planned in that manner every week and be available if the Bills’ pass rush gets going.

Bell still has one of the best “stop and go” techniques in the NFL, and it will come in handy if the Jets want to have a chance of winning.

Let Darnold Air the Ball Out

Looking at things from the Jets perspective, the defense leaves a lot to be desired, so Darnold may have to make this a shootout if they want a chance to win. The receiving core isn’t great, but there’s potential. Some of these players have been in the league for a long time, and there’s a reason for that.

While the Bills rush defense was weaker last season by comparison to their skill against the pass, the Jets have to still keep the Bills on their heels. Darnold should air the ball out, utilizing a mix of short to mid range passes to move the chains. No need to chance a long ball here, especially since he lost his best deep threat, Robby Anderson, to free agency. Until rookie Denzel Mims emerges, Breshad Perriman may be his best target, who had a decent outing in the last few weeks of the season last year with Tampa Bay. But also the Bills can’t sleep on Jamison Crowder. Often overlook, he smoked Buffalo’s defense a year ago. Between two games against the Bills, Crowder amassed 22 catches for 165 yards and a touchdown.

Contain and Prevent

There are some decent players on this defensive squad, although it does not have safety Jamal Adams or linebacker C.J. Mosley. This team, if scripted properly, and plays efficiently, could have the means of slowing down the Bills offense.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen can be dangerous with his feet, and jet out in an instant if he senses pressure. The Bills coaching staff has aimed to keep him the pocket moreso, but the ability to wisely and safely escape is invaluable in today’s NFL. Rush the front three, with their two inside linebackers, and have the outside LB’s keep an eye out for Allen, or potential dumps to running backs Devin Singletary or Zack Moss.

The Bills have a strange history of beating themselves in games against the Jets, and a well executed game plan on defense, will give them the opening they need to start the season 1-0. They almost pulled it off last year, and 2019 turned out to be a tire fire for Gang Green.

Quinnen Williams’ court hearing for gun charge postponed

Quinnen Williams’ court hearing on Thursday was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If it wasn’t for the COVID-19 pandemic, Quinnen Williams would have been scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. That hearing, however, did not take place, according to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta.

Williams’ hearing for criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon in Queens Criminal Court on Thursday was postponed. No new court date has been scheduled yet. Williams’ original court date was March 25, but that was also postponed due to the pandemic.

The 22-year-old was arrested on March 5 at LaGuardia Airport in Queens for carrying a handgun with an ammo clip. The gun was not loaded and there was no ammunition present, according to reports at the time.

Williams had a permit for his gun in the state of Alabama, but gun laws are much stricter in New York. You must have a New York license in order to carry a gun in the state.

Per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Williams’ attorney expects the criminal charges to be dismissed.

Williams had a disappointing rookie season in New York after being taken with the third overall pick in 2019 NFL Draft out of Alabama. In 13 games, Williams recorded 28 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and one pass defense.

After battling injuries last season, Williams should get every opportunity in training camp to solidify a starting spot on the defensive line. He could, however, miss the start of the season if the NFL decides to discipline him for the airport incident.

Fans will not be allowed to attend Oklahoma at Army with New York order

OU is currently scheduled to travel to West Point, NY, in week four to face Army. But the teams will be playing in an empty stadium.

With college football in 2020 still hanging in the balance, OU’s season has already taken a significant hit.

OU is currently scheduled to travel to West Point, NY, in week four to face Army. Should that game happen, the teams will be playing in an empty stadium.

On Tuesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned fans from attending any sporting events in New York.

Of course, this ruling will only come into effect if the game is actually played. With the Big Ten and Pac-12 recently switching to a conference-only format for the 2020 season, that is no guarantee.

Here’s a look into what a Big-12 only schedule could look like for OU.

This game is particularly challenging because there are no airports in West Point. OU was likely planning to fly into JFK or LaGuardia before traveling to West Point via ground.

New York has received 5,072 new cases in the last seven days. That mark is only slightly higher than Oklahoma’s count of 4,688.

Cuomo also announced on Tuesday that travelers from 31 different states, including Oklahoma, must quarantine for 14 days before entering New York.

Oklahoma’s matchup with Army is the second half a home-and-home which began with a game in Norman in 2018.

Report: Warriors assistant Mike Brown interviewing for New York Knicks head coaching job

The New York Knicks are interviewing Golden State Warriors associate head coach Mike Brown for their head coaching opening.

Joining the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks won’t be finishing out the remainder of the 2019-20 season in Orlando. With an early jumpstart on the offseason, the Knicks can turn their attention to their current head coaching vacancy. New Knicks President Leon Rose will be in charge of finding a replacement for David Fizdale on the sidelines.

As the Knicks’ coaching carousel heats up, a bevy of names have surfaced as potential candidates, including Golden State’s associate head coach Mike Brown. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Knicks are interviewing Brown for their head coaching vacancy. Ian Begley of SNY confirmed The Athletic’s report.

Prior to joining Golden State, Brown has head coaching experience with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. In eight seasons as a head coach, Brown has a 347-216 (.616%) record as a head coach. In 2009, Brown earned the NBA’s Coach of the Year honor. With LeBron James in his fourth season, Brown helped lead the Cavaliers to the Finals against the San Antonio Spurs in 2007.

Brown filled in as Golden State’s acting head coach when Steve Kerr missed time due to back issues. With Kerr out, Brown led the Warriors to a 12-0 run through the 2017 playoffs. Brown’s been apart of Golden State’s coaching staff for a pair of championships. Since 2015, Alvin Gentry and Luke Walton have left Kerr’s coaching staff for head coaching positions.

Brown joins a long list of reported candidates for the Knicks, including Tom Thibodeau, former Brooklyn Nets coach Kenny Atkinson, Dallas assistant Jamahl Mosley, San Antonio assistants Becky Hammon and Will Hardy, 76ers assistant Ime Udoka and others.

Oklahoma athletic director is not trying to alter non-conference games

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione joined Siruis radio to set the record straight on Oklahoma’s non-conference dealings.

With the coronavirus pandemic creating uncertainty throughout the sports world, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione joined Holly Rowe, Gabe Ikard and Chris Plank on Siruis radio to set the record straight on Oklahoma’s non-conference dealings.

The Sooners are currently set to travel to West Point, New York to play Army in 2020 before conference games begin.

New York has been the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, with over 192,394 total cases in the state according to The New York Times on May 14.

“We’re not investigating any other alternative with non-conference games,” Castiglione said. “Sure there may be some last minute adjustment, but you start trying to move one it creates a chain reaction. I don’t see that being the wisest way to go forward with football.”

College football has yet to see cancellations or postponements outside of spring practices and games.

Oklahoma’s season is currently set to begin on September 5.

New York Jets’ 2020 win total: Best bet

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Odds last updated Friday, May 8 at 2 p.m. ET.

Projected wins: 6.5 / OVER:  -130 / UNDER: +110

The success of the Jets in 2020 boils down to if head coach Adam Gase is the guy for the job and if QB Sam Darnold is a franchise quarterback. If either is untrue, then how could you bet the Jets Over 6.5 wins? Gase has failed to make the playoffs, or finish .500 or above, for the past three seasons (one at the Jets and two as head coach of the Miami Dolphins).

A Gase-coached team has never been ranked higher than 25th in yards per game and was ranked higher than 26th by Football Outsiders’ offensive DVOA once (his first season coaching the Dolphins in 2016).

New general manager Joe Douglas did a good job getting pieces to fit around Darnold with Becton and Mims but they’ll need to be good fast if the passing game is going to turn around in 2020. Pro Football Focus graded Darnold as the 31st-best quarterback last season (out of 37) and the Jets passing game ranked 27th in QB Rating, 29th in passing yards per game and gave up the fourth-most sacks.

The Jets’ schedule isn’t doing Darnold any favors either; the top-10 stingiest passing defenses they face include the Bills (twice), Patriots (twice), 49ers, Chiefs, Chargers and Browns.

TAKE the JETS UNDER 6.5 wins (+110).
