Ex-Broncos offensive lineman gets another chance with Lions

Netane Muti’s injury-riddled career will continue after the Lions re-signed him this week.

Netane Muti’s injury-riddled career will continue.

After spending the 2024 season on injured reserve, the 25-year-old guard re-signed with the Detroit Lions earlier this week, the team announced.

Muti (6-3, 315 pounds) fell to the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft due in large part to injury concerns. The Denver Broncos picked the Fresno State product in the second-to-last round of the draft, betting on his high upside.

He spent the first three years of his career with the Broncos, starting four games. Denver cut him ahead of the 2022 season and Muti went on to spend the next two years with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Muti signed a reserve/future contract with the Lions after the 2023 season and he was competing for a 2024 starting role before suffering a shoulder injury that landed him on IR.

Muti’s football career has been hindered by injuries including a torn knee ligament, a torn Achilles, a Lisfranc injury and the aforementioned shoulder injury. He will now aim to stay healthy and bounce back in Detroit next season.

Lions re-sign a largely forgotten offensive guard with high-end potential

Lions re-sign a largely forgotten offensive guard with high-end potential in oft-injured Netane Muti

Back in the early days of Detroit Lions training camp last summer, a newcomer to the offensive line quickly made waves with his strong play. Netane Muti worked his way into some first-team reps at guard and was clearly outplaying any of the rest of the interior offensive line competition on the second-team offense.

Unfortunately, a serious shoulder injury ended the season for Muti. And just like that, No. 52 fell largely out of the collective consciousness of nearly everyone–myself included.

The Lions did not forget how well the former Broncos guard played. On Wednesday, the team re-signed Muti for the 2025 season. If he’s able to stay healthy, Muti absolutely has the skills and the grit fit to compete for a gameday active roster spot next fall.

Injuries will be the determining factor. Since he began his college career at Fresno State, Muti has torn a knee ligament, torn an Achilles and suffered a Lisfranc injury in addition to the shoulder surgery that ended his first year in Detroit.

Dan Campbell confirms ‘long-term’ injuries for John Cominsky and Netane Muti

Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirms ‘long-term’ injuries for John Cominsky and Netane Muti

The Detroit Lions suffered their first serious injuries of the summer during Tuesday’s practice session. Defensive lineman John Cominsky and offensive lineman Netane Muti each went down during the practice with injuries that required them to leave practice.

It’s not good news for either Muti or Cominsky, Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed.

“Both of them have injuries that will knock them out for a while,” Campbell said at the start of his press conference. “Both will need surgery.”

Cominsky suffered a torn knee ligament in his right leg, while Muti suffered a left shoulder injury.

When asked about injured reserve and the potential for Cominsky to return late in the year, Campbell didn’t rule it out, stating that he and GM Brad Holmes have discussed it but not made any decisions yet.

The latest in the series of Detroit Lions positional breakdowns is now available to watch and stream. Recorded via the Detroit Lions Podcast, this edition goes over the offensive line room as it stands heading into training camp.

From the excellent starting five, which many feel is the best in the league, through the veteran depth and the rookies, this one covers coach Hank Fraley’s unit. What is in line for rookies Christian Mahogany and Giovanni Manu? Can a newcomer like Netane Muti seize a reserve spot over a holdover like Kayode Awosika? What’s the backup plan behind All-Pro center Frank Ragnow?

All that and more in this video, which I recorded during the week.

Lions sign another OL for the offseason

Lions sign OL Netane Muti to a reserve/future contract

The Detroit Lions added another free agent offensive lineman to the offseason player list. On Tuesday, the Lions announced they have signed OL Netane Muti to a reserve/future contract.

Muti, 24, played in two games for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 but only on special teams. He was a guard for three seasons with the Denver Broncos after being selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft by Denver. He’s got NFL experience playing both guard spots.

During his early career in Denver, he played alongside and often backed up Graham Glasgow, who is now a free agent after being the starting RG for the Lions in 2023.

Muti comes with a rugby background and scant college football experience. He tore his Achilles twice while at Fresno State but has remained healthy in his NFL career.

5 big questions on offense as Raiders wrap up minicamp

Raiders have a lot of pretty big questions facing them as they enter the heart of the offseason. Here are 5 facing the offense.

Every offseason brings questions that need answers. For this Raiders team, they may have more questions than answers. Some of these questions are no small thing.

Last week the Raiders wrapped up their offseason practices with their three-day mandatory minicamp. That means they have now entered the longest and final portion of the offseason. The next time these players convene will be training camp at the end of July.

They enter this six weeks with many things unsettled. Most of which will still be unsettled when camp begins, giving them a lot to think about over the next six weeks.

Raiders bring back G Netane Muti

Netane Muti re-signed by Raiders who nabbed him off Broncos practice squad late last season.

These days the Raiders can’t afford to be losing interior offensive linemen. They need all the competition and insurance they can get. In the interest of that, they have re-signed fourth-year guard Netane Muti.

Muti was signed late last season off the Broncos’ practice squad. The Raiders have suffered several injuries at guard and instead of starting John Simpson, they cut Simpson and signed Muti.

Though Muti didn’t see the field, it was clear the team has plans for the former sixth round pick that was more than just chilling on the bench for a month.

Muti appeared in 20 games with four starts over three seasons in Denver. The Raiders must have seen something from him they liked last season, because days after his only appearance, they nabbed him off the practice squad.

The 6-3, 315-pounder attended Fresno State for college and was drafted despite just five college games due to several season-ending injuries.

Broncos made several roster moves on Tuesday

After placing RB Mike Boone on IR, the Broncos are adding WR Freddie Swain.

The Denver Broncos made several changes to their roster on Tuesday.

First, the Broncos placed running back Mike Boone on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Because there are only four games left this year, Boone’s season is now over.

To fill Boone’s former spot on the 53-man roster, Denver signed wide receiver Freddie Swain off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Swain played with Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson from 2020-2021, catching 38 passes for 502 yards and six touchdowns in 33 games with the Seattle Seahawks.

Additionally, Denver released defensive lineman McTelvin Agim from the practice squad. A former third-round pick in 2020, Agim never lived up to his high draft status with the Broncos.

Denver also lost backup guard Netane Muti on Tuesday — he left the team’s practice squad to join the Las Vegas Raiders’ active roster.

After cutting Agim and losing Muti, the Broncos have two open spots on the practice squad. Denver might save those two spots for players cut this week to make room for other players returning from injured reserve.

Broncos outside linebacker Randy Gregory (knee) and safety Caden Sterns (hip) are both eligible to return from IR, but the Broncos will have to make room for them on the 53-man roster.

Raiders sign G Netane Muti off Broncos practice squad after cutting G John Simpson

Raiders making moves at guard this week including signing Netane Muti off Broncos practice squad and cutting John Simpson

For the past couple months, the Raiders had been set on the offensive line. This after starting the season without the same starting five for the first month. But Sunday, the injury to Alex Bars has caused them to make several moves at the position.

The first move was cutting John Simpson.

It may seem odd that the first move upon losing your starter is to cut your backup, but when Simpson came in for Bars, he proved not up to the task. When presented with going with Simpson moving forward and whatever is behind door number two, they went with door number two.

The corresponding move with Simpson out was to sign Hroniss Grasu off the practice squad. But Grasu is a backup center/guard. Dylan Parham can also step in as the backup center, but it wouldn’t be ideal should Andre James go down to move Parham from the left guard spot he’s held down much of the season. That would mean two spots change, instead of just one.

So, today the team has signed Netane Muti off the Broncos practice squad.

Muti was a sixth round pick by the Broncos in the 2020 draft out of Fresno State. He has appeared in 20 games with the team in three seasons, starting four games. He was elevated last week for the Broncos and played 28 snaps.

So, there will be a couple new faces on the Raiders sideline Sunday in Grasu and Muti. And it’s even possible Muti could be stepping right into a starting role.

The Raiders currently have one guard on the practice squad. It’s Jordan Meredith who was with the team throughout the offseason and training camp. He is an option as well.

Broncos lose backup guard Netane Muti to a division rival

Netane Muti left the Broncos’ practice squad to join the Raiders’ active roster.

The Denver Broncos have lost one of their top backup offensive linemen to a division rival.

The Las Vegas Raiders are signing guard Netane Muti off Denver’s practice squad to their active roster, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

It’s a surprising development because Denver does not have much depth on the offensive line and the Broncos could have promoted Muti to their own 53-man roster to prevent the Raiders from signing him.

After Graham Glasgow moved from guard to center as an injury fill-in, Muti was left as one of the team’s top remaining reserve guards behind regular starters Dalton Risner and Quinn Meinerz.

Muti played 28 snaps against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in the place of an injured Risner, and he started four games during his Bronco career.

Muti (6-3, 315 pounds) fell to Denver in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Fresno State. Muti’s college film was extremely impressive, but he missed extensive time in college due to injuries, which hurt his stock. Before the draft, Muti turned heads when he bench-pressed 225 pounds 44 times.

Muti did not make the Broncos’ initial 53-man roster in September, which perhaps was an early sign that Denver’s front office does not rate the guard quite as highly as some Broncos fans.
