Guard has been and continues to be a major need for the Raiders. And while it may not be a position they address in the first round, they probably shouldn’t wait around for scraps as they need a prospect capable of being a day one starter at right guard.

They recently signed former Bears guard Cody Whitehair, and while he adds experience and scheme familiarity, he isn’t considered the answer at the position. At least not to the extent they can call it a day and shift to addressing other positions.

So, let’s take a look at five guards who could be in play for the Raiders and where they might consider drafting them.

Report: Saints to host Boston College OL Christian Mahogany on pre-draft visit

Add another name to the list of 30 official pre-draft visits for the Saints. Get to know Boston College guard Christian Mahogany:

Add another name to the list of New Orleans Saints official visits ahead of the 2024 NFL draft. Boston College offensive guard Christian Mahogany is one of the 30 prospects meeting with the Saints at their headquarters in Metairie this spring, per NFL draft analyst Jared Tokarz.

Mahogany has been on our radar for a while — he’s someone we put on our 2024 draft watch list last summer, and who was linked to the Saints in way-too-soon mock drafts before the season started. His college career began at left guard before the Eagles asked him to move to the right side, where he’s started in 2021 and 2023 (Mahogany missed the 2022 season with a knee injury).

Mahogany has done well for himself. He weighed in beneath the Saints’ previously-established standards for a guard at 6-foot-3 and 314 pounds but that’s right in line with the thresholds Klint Kubiak valued in his previous stint as an offensive coordinator, and his impressive movement skills should serve him well as a pro; Mahogany posted a 9.63 Relative Athletic Score which ranked 58 out of 1,523 guards since 1987.

Boston College has been an offensive line factory in recent years with several high draft picks like Zion Johnson (Los Angeles Chargers in 2022) and Chris Lindstrom (Atlanta Falcons in 2019), and Mahogany could be next. He was talked up as the best player on the field at East-West Shrine Bowl practices earlier this offseason. He’s currently projected to be a second- or third-round pick, so Mahogany could be in play when the Saints are on the clock at No. 45.

Giants will host Boston College OL Christian Mahogany at local pro day

Boston College OL Christian Mahogany is among those who will be attending the New York Giants’ local pro day in East Rutherford.

The New York Giants will host several offensive linemen at their local pro day this coming Thursday. One of them will be Boston College’s Christian Mahogany, a native of Elmwood Park.

Art Staple of USA TODAY was the first to report the news.

The Giants will also have Holy Cross’ C.J. Hanson in attendance as well.

Mahogany, who is 6-foot-3 and 314 pounds, is a better blocker than a pass protector.

NFL Network draft analyst Lance Zierlein views Mahogany as an eventual NFL starter.

Big and powerful but lacking the leverage and body control needed to play a more consistent brand of football. Mahogany’s early tape was very problematic due to shoddy footwork caused by a poor stance, but he made a midseason self-correction that led to better tape later in the year. He doesn’t have the short-area movements to be a consistent pass protector against NFL sub-packages, but the hand usage and punch are good. Mahogany is a downhill mauler who needs to continue technique work but also needs to play for a team that values the big power players and allows them to do what they do best in the run game. He has a chance to be a backup with upside early in his career.

The Giants continue to tweak their offensive line, determined to get it right. General manager Joe Schoen and co-owner John Mara both said earlier this offseason the offensive line is still very much a priority.

Lions draft prospect of the day: Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College

Mahogany offers outstanding power and aggressiveness as a starting-ready guard

It’s back to the trenches for today’s Detroit Lions draft prospect of the day.

The daily prospect focus is on players who should hold some appeal to the Lions in the draft, with a focus on the more likely positions the team will be targeting. If you’re looking for quarterbacks or upper-echelon running backs, you’re probably not going to find those here. Outside cornerbacks, defensive linemen, interior offensive linemen, some wide receivers and offensive tackles figure to appear along the path to April’s draft. Not all of the players will be top-100 prospects, either.

Today’s prospect is a throwback type of interior offensive lineman with some intriguing upside.

Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College

Height: 6-foot-3

Weight: 314 pounds (measured the same at Shrine Bowl and Scouting Combine)

Mahogany spent three years as a starter at Boston College, with over 10 starts at both left guard and right guard. He initially redshirted as a three-star recruit from New Jersey, starting right away at left guard in his redshirt freshman season. Mahogany moved to the right side the next year and became one of the best blockers in the country. He missed the 2022 season with a knee injury, returning to the Eagles and their varied offensive concepts in 2023, when he also served as a team captain.

Mahogany is 23 years old.

What I like

  •  Exudes brute power throughout his big frame
  • Nasty initial punch that can jolt and stand up powerful rushers
  • Excellent anchor strength in pass protection
  • Finishes his blocks and looks for work to unleash more violence
  • Impressive short-area footwork to slide one step and quickly reset
  • Acts as a snowplow when pulling in the run game
  • Recorded the lowest blown pass block rate of any prospect in 2023 per SIS
  • Showed improvement in his hand placement and balance over the course of his career

What worries me going into the NFL

  •  Poor balance and pass protection range beyond one step in any direction
  • Can get overaggressive and overshoot his assignment
  • Lacks quickness in his feet and knees to effectively pick up stunts and second-level rushers that don’t try to bull him
  • Gets upright in space at times
  • Undersized DTs can leverage off and around him if he doesn’t win with his initial punch
  • Powerful but slow afoot and straight-linish as a run blocker in space
  • Torn ACL in 2022, though that’s his only injury of note

Best game I watched: Pittsburgh

Worst game I watched: Louisville

Overall

Mahogany is a guard whose game would have fit nicely back in the 1970s and 80s with his power-based, aggressive style. He’s wide, powerful and plays angry, capable of starting at either OG spot but projecting better on the right side. Mahogany’s lack of foot speed or twitchy movement skills makes him a better fit for a gap-based scheme like the one the Lions run. There will always be concerns about his ability to handle quickness on the interior, but Mahogany’s consistent anchor in pass pro and dominating power in the run game should hold considerable appeal for the Lions. He projects as a 3rd/4th round pick, but Mahogany is a top-50 overall talent on my board.

2024 NFL Scouting Combine: Tracking meetings with Vikings

Keep track of all the Minnesota Vikings interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine

As we get closer to the 2024 NFL Draft, these prospects hoping to hear their names called on draft day will be analyzed from head to toe. Physically, everything from their strength at the point of attack to their speed off the snap will be dissected like a frog in a high school science class.

However, what’s just as, if not more, important is the mindset and the mentality of these prospects. Figuring out what made these guys decide to dedicate their lives to playing the game of football for a living.

During the pre-draft process, front offices are given the opportunity to interview prospects and find the answer to these questions and others before they take to the field this weekend.

We devised this interview tracker so that fans can get as deep of a look as possible about who the Vikings could be interested in going into the draft.

2024 NFL draft top 150 prospects: Pre-Combine edition

2024 NFL draft top 150 prospects: Pre-Combine overall rankings from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

Weeks upon weeks of watching college game film, All-22 tape and more than a few games in person and the individual big board is finally taking some real shape. With the NFL Scouting Combine coming next week, it’s time to reveal the base rankings of the top 150 players I’ve evaluated for the 2024 NFL draft.

There likely won’t be any radical changes even after the combine and pro day workouts. Verifiable character issues and medical problems are about the only things that can swing prospects radically, though unexpected measurements or workout numbers can also create some later movement. Note that this is an overall ranking, not a prediction of draft order.

Without further ado, the top 150 prospects as graded entering the 2024 combine.

Lions full 2024 mock draft 3.0: End of the college regular season edition

Mock drafts at this place and time are about ideas and getting more familiar with players who could intrigue the Lions during the 2024 NFL draft in April in Detroit

The college football regular season has come to an end as the calendar flips to December. It’s a good time for the fresh update of the 7-

The pick order is based on the current NFL standings and playoff seeding ladder entering NFL Week 13. Detroit would pick 27th in the first round.

Shrine Bowl announces some exciting early commitments

The East-West Shrine Bowl has announced some intriguing 2024 NFL draft prospect commitments for the classic all-star game

The first few commitments for the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl are starting to get out. The postseason all-star game is attracting some exciting prospects to the week of practices and the Shrine Bowl game, which has moved to the Dallas Cowboys training complex in Frisco, Texas for the first time.

One of my personal favorites is Boston College IOL Christian Mahogany. The intense competitor is one of the best on-the-move blockers in the draft class. Mahogany is in the Wyatt Teller mold of physical guard and could be a late Day 2 pick. He’s currently my No. 63 overall player.

One of the top candidates for the fastest player in the draft has also committed. TCU safety Mark Perry, a former Pac-12 100m sprint champion at Colorado while also playing football, can absolutely fly to the point of attack. Perry is a productive tackler who aggressively attacks the run and short passes, and is generally regarded as a late-round prospect at this point.

Looking for a Day 3 sleeper at center? Kingsley Eguakun from Florida is a good one. Eguakun has NFL-ready skills in the pivot, but he’s been out of the scouting spotlight because he missed most of 2023 with an injury. He’s ready to roll in the Shrine Bowl and could be one of the biggest risers of the practice week.

Finally, South Dakota State RB Isaiah Davis figures to be one of the top FCS-level prospects in the draft. I haven’t seen Davis yet in 2023, but he made quite an impression in the 2022 FCS playoffs with his ability to run through tackles and balance after contact. At 220 pounds, Davis is a load to try and tackle in space and he’s shown he can catch the ball out of the backfield, too.

Lions full 2024 mock draft 2.0: The bye week projections

At this point, mock drafts are about ideas and getting more familiar with players who could intrigue the Lions during the 2024 NFL draft in April in Detroit.

Another quarter of the season has come and gone for the Detroit Lions. Just as they did in the first four weeks, the Lions went 3-1 in Weeks 5-8 and arrived at their bye week with a 6-2 record.

That makes it a good opportunity to produce another edition of the Lions Wire full 2024 mock draft.

The pick order is based on the current NFL standings and playoff seeding ladder. Detroit would pick 29th in the first round.

The first edition was completed prior to Week 5.
