New to the OU-Nebraska rivalry? Study these flashcards before Saturday.

A whole generation of college football fans has emerged since Nebraska and Oklahoma last faced off. So if you’re unfamiliar with the rivalry, here are some flashcards to study before Saturday.

The last time Oklahoma and Nebraska played each other, “Tik Tok” by Kesha was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Drew Brees led the New Orleans Saints to a 31-17 Super Bowl win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Those 2010 Cornhuskers went 10-4 in the regular season before earning a trip to the Capital One Bowl. Nebraska has had just one 10 win season since.

Oklahoma, however, won 12 games that season and would defeat Connecticut, 48-20 in the Fiesta Bowl. Since then, the Crimson and Cream have posted nine seasons with double-digit wins.

The Sooners and the Cornhuskers have been trending in opposite directions over the last decade. Expectations for these two programs could not be further apart as the anniversary of a once competitive rivalry is forecasted to become a blowout win for Oklahoma on Saturday.

An entire generation of college football fans has found love for the sport since the last time Oklahoma-Nebraska was a genuine rivalry. If you are one of those fans, fear not! Here are a few flashcards to use at the water cooler (or in arguments on Twitter.)

Up Next: How many times have they met?

Threat Assessment: 3 Cornhuskers who could be game-changers vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma and Nebraska will play each other for the first time in a decade. Here are 3 Cornhuskers the Sooners need to beware of in the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century.”

The Oklahoma Sooners and Nebraska Cornhuskers will meet for the 87th time on Saturday. The Cornhuskers roll into town to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century,” as the teams will meet for the first time in over a decade.

But much of the preseason excitement about this matchup fizzled out when Nebraska fell to Illinois 30-22 in week 0. After the loss, our very own John Williams broke down the playoff implications of an irrelevant Nebraska team.

With a nonconference schedule considered one of the weakest in the Big 12, the Sooners needed a relevant Nebraska team to bolster their strength of schedule… Fans will be hyped for the Sooners’ matchup with the Cornhuskers. When Nebraska comes to Norman, there will be a lot of energy and excitement to renew the storied rivalry. However, after an upset loss to one of the lower-tier teams in the Big 10, the matchup has lost some of its intrigue.

However, the fact remains that Nebraska is (or at least it’s supposed to be) the most formidable opponent Oklahoma has faced during nonconference play. That means it’s time for another threat assessment.

Here’s who you and the Sooners need to keep an eye on this weekend.

Up Next: A Nebraska Wide Receiver to watch out for.

How does Lincoln Riley feel about these Sooners through week 2?

Lincoln Riley spoke with the media on Tuesday afternoon. The #Sooners head coach provided insight on numerous Sooners through two weeks of action.

Tuesday afternoon, Lincoln Riley sat down with the media to provide his final thoughts on the 76-0 win over WCU and discuss Saturday’s matchup against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

While there is much we still don’t know about the 2021 rendition of the Oklahoma Sooners (for example, how they will play against real competition), Riley did discuss the progression of numerous Sooners through the first two weeks – and how he views their impact moving forward.

On the progression of Perrion Winfrey

After missing some time during preseason camp, the 2020 All-Big 12 selection is returning to form. In response to Sooner Scoops’ Bob Przyblo, Riley believes defensive lineman Perrion Winfrey has “improved significantly from week 1 to week 2.” The senior pressured WCU quarterback Rogan Wells on multiple occasions, earning 1.5 sacks for a Sooners defense that held the Catamounts to 178 total yards.

Winfrey’s production is sure to increase alongside his snap count. As Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch are likely to give their starting defense a longer leash against Nebraska.

Cornhuskers’ quarterback Adrian Martinez was sacked five times by an Illinois team that ranks 120th in the FBS in total defense. That’s a green light for Winfrey and the defensive front to bring the pressure early and often.

On his confidence in Jaden Knowles and Todd Hudson

Due to last-minute ineligibilities and sudden changes of heart, the Sooners entered the 2021 campaign top-heavy in the running back room. Eric Gray and Kennedy Brooks are both capable of being RB1, and each has led the Sooners in rushing through the first two weeks. But the depth behind them has been the primary storyline in OU’s backfield.

Walk-on running backs Jaden Knowles and Todd Hudson carried the ball 13 times against WCU. Knowles rushed just four times but was highly productive with 37 yards and two touchdowns. While Hudson also found the endzone twice in just nine attempts.

The sample size may be small, but both running backs appear to have impressed Lincoln Riley.

If Knowles and Hudson can continue to make the most of their opportunities, however, limited they may be, then OU’s running back worries could become a distant memory.

Nebraska Cornhuskers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

This isn’t how it’s supposed to work. By Year Three under Scott Frost, the Nebraska offense was expected to be a dangerous, fast-paced, high-octane attack that screwed up everything in its path.

The Huskers cranked up the yards – averaging 391 per game – but a whole lot of turnovers, no downfield passing game, and too many inconsistencies stalled the progress. Eight starters are expected back for new offensive coordinator Matt Lubick to work with, and a slew of players are coming in through the transfer portal.

The quarterback situation is set. There’s no hinting that Luke McCaffrey could take over – he’s a Louisville Cardinal now. There’s no suggesting that someone else could rise up and take the gig. It’s Adrian Martinez, and that’s it.

The junior shows just enough flash to think he’s about to turn into the superstar he was expected to be as Frost’s guy from the start, and he was hardly bad last season with a team high 521 rushing yards and completing 71% of his throws. Now he has to make more downfield plays and turn more good drives into points.

Leading receiver Wan’Dale Robinson is a Kentucky Wildcat now, leaving Levi Falck and his 13 catches for 122 yards and one score as the leading returning wide receiver.

The tight ends are terrific – Austin Allen and Travis Vokolek can both catch – but the offense needs former Iowa transfer Oliver Martin and 6-4, 225-pound JUCO transfer Omar Manning to be fantastic.

The running game that finished second in the Big Ten will be strong again, but it would be nice to get more from the backs – Martinez shouldn’t be the No. 1 rusher again. The guys are there. They’re young, but they’re talented in what might just be the best rotation yet under Frost – at least that’s the hope.

USC transfer Markese Stepp got hurt in spring ball, but he should be one of the main men to go along with Marvin Scott and Gabe Ervin two good-looking backs to work around. Now the line has to do its job, and without the two top blockers from last year -Brenden Jaimes and Matt Farniok.

Cameron Jurgens is a good, sound center and Bryce Benhart is a 6-9, 330-pound mountain of a right tackle. The starting five will be just fine around those two.

Three Nebraska players enter the transfer portal including four-star 2019 QB

The Huskers lose a trio of players to the transfer portal

As transfer portal season goes into full gear, there has been a ton of turnover in Lincoln, Nebraska. After landing Wisconsin target and USC transfer RB Markese Stepp, Scott Frost and the Huskers have now lost a few key offensive pieces.

WR Kade Warner and OL Will Farniok were expected to see limited playing time with the Huskers, while Luke McCaffrey was heading into another year playing behind Adrian Martinez at QB.

McCaffrey saw the field in 2020, as the Huskers went 1-1 in his two starts. The former four-star recruit in 2019 is likely looking for a place where he can take the reigns under center.

Since the Badgers game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this Saturday has been canceled because of a rise in positive COVID-19 cases among Wisconsin players and staff, many Wisconsin fans will have some free time to be able to watch other games around the Big Ten.

There will be several exciting matchups around the Big Ten for Wisconsin fans to keep an eye on, especially the game between the number third-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and the 18th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. An exciting Friday night matchup will be played tonight as well, as Tanner Morgan and the Minnesota Golden Gophers will look to get their season back on track against the Maryland Terrapins.

Both matchups could have huge implications on the Big Ten Championship game, and who Wisconsin could potentially be playing in it.

With great anticipation, Ohio State took the field for the first time in 2020. Outside of quarterback Justin Fields, the Buckeyes are off to a slow start.

Nebraska took the opening drive to the house in under two minutes to take an early lead. Ohio State and Fields would answer on their first possession as well.

Fields as looked as good as advertised going 12 for 13, completing his first 11 passes, with 187 yards passing and a beautiful touchdown toss, while leading the Buckeyes in rushing with 46 yards. Garrett Wilson has also hauled in 5 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Unfortunately, the rest of the team isn’t doing much. The offensive line isn’t getting much of a push at the line of scrimmage opening few holes for the running backs. On the other side of the ball, the defense isn’t getting in the kind of pressure we’ve come to expect from the Buckeye front four.

Thanks to great field position and some questionable calls against Nebraska, Master Teague was able to scamper for a TD before the half. Heading into the locker room, the Buckeyes lead 24-14.

Here’s hoping the rust and opening game jitters are gone and the Buckeyes come out with some adjustments and a sense of urgency.
