Former Texas A&M Head coach and current Maryland assistant Kevin Sumlin was arrested on DUI charges

It has been reported that former Aggies HC and current Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested on DUI charges.

These are the type of days to put aside any bias regarding current or former coaches when dealing with personal matters, as former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, who currently serves as the co-offensive coordinator at Maryland under current head coach Mike Locksley, was reportedly arrested and charged with a DUI (Driving under the influence) last weekend.

First reported by The Diamondback sports editor Taylor Lyons, Sumlin was arrested in Florida during the Terrapins bye week, and according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the 59-year-old was apprehended on Saturday, Oct. 21 at precisely 1:00 a.m. and released on bail just hours after his arrest.

According to Lyons, Sumlin reportedly refused a breathalyzer test, resulting in a license suspension for at least one year, per the initial report. He also pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment, as this charge can result in a maximum of six months in prison.

Before joining Maryland last February, Sumlin spent one season in the USFL as the head coach of the Houston Gamblers after serving as Arizona’s head coach from 2018 to 2020. However, Sumlin’s five-year head coaching stint at Texas A&M (2012-2017) has become a resurfaced talking point among current Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher’s struggles in year six, as Sumlin’s 45-22 records have now trumped Fisher’s 43-24 career mark.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin shuts down Maryland 23-10 in the rain

Photos from Wisconsin football’s 23-10 victory in the rain over the Maryland Terrapins:

Despite the rain and strong winds, the Wisconsin Badgers decimated the Maryland Terrapins in a 23-10 victory at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

The Badgers relied heavily on their ground game and running backs Braelon Allen and Isaac Guerendo. The duo combined for 233 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Guerendo turned on the jets for an extraordinary 89-yard rushing touchdown in the first half.

The Wisconsin defense played lights out, holding the Terrapins to 5-17 on third down and under 200 total yards of offense. Outside linebacker Nick Herbig had a great first game back with three tackles for loss, as well as two sacks against Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.

It was an outstanding victory for Wisconsin against the now 6-3 Terrapins. The Badgers will head on the road next weekend to face off against Big Ten West rival Iowa.

Some of the best Twitter reactions to Wisconsin RB Isaac Guerendo’s 89-yard rushing touchdown against Maryland:

Early in the second quarter of their matchup against the Maryland Terrapins, the Wisconsin Badgers went up two scores with a spectacular 89-yard rushing touchdown from running back Isaac Guerendo.

The Badgers were able to go up 7-0 at the end of the first quarter after an impressive drive that was jumpstarted by a 36-yard jet sweep from wide receiver Skyler Bell. Guerendo’s fantastic run came on the first play of the drive, where he made an excellent cut at midfield to break away to the outside.

Guerendo is not the only Wisconsin running back having a great start in the rain, as Braelon Allen has already racked up 79 yards on the ground and a touchdown of his own. The Badgers’ dangerous running attack and stout defense have prevented any momentum from forming for the Terrapins so far in the first half.

How to watch the Wisconsin Badgers against the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Badgers will go up against the 6-2 Terrapins on Saturday, in what should be an exciting matchup in the rain. Wisconsin is coming off its bye week and will be returning several key players including outside linebacker Nick Herbig, safety Hunter Wohl and tight end Hayden Rucci.

Rucci will be extremely valuable as a blocker for the Badgers’ rushing attack this week, as they will likely be leaned on because of the poor weather that is expected. Running back Braelon Allen will also likely see a heavy workload, despite the recent successes of Wisconsin’s passing game.

The Badgers’ defense will be trying to stop quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who will be returning from a knee injury that sidelined him against Northwestern. Tagovailoa has been spectacular so far this season for the Terrapins, but hopefully, the predicted bad weather and some key returning defensive players will help the Badgers reach 5-4.

Series History: Wisconsin vs. Maryland

The short series history between the Wisconsin Badgers and Maryland Terrapins:

Despite the Maryland Terrapins being a member of the Big Ten, the Wisconsin Badgers have only played them three times since they joined the Conference in 2014. The first matchup between them was a 52-7 blowout in favor of the Badgers in October 2014.

Wisconsin has won all three matchups between the two sides including their latest game in 2017, where the Badgers beat the Terrapins 38-13 at Camp Randall Stadium. Former Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook had a solid game with 225 passing yards and two touchdowns while running back Jonathan Taylor racked up 128 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown.

Hopefully, the Badgers can keep their winning streak alive on Saturday, as they will face a tough test against this year’s Maryland team that sits at 6-2 overall this season.

Maryland Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Terrapins miss from the Big Ten West Division?

The Terps don’t get Iowa, Minnesota, or Nebraska, but missing Illinois isn’t necessarily going to help. They have to go to Wisconsin, but Purdue and Northwestern are winnable games at home.

It’s not like there are a ton of breaks against the East, but Ohio State and Michigan State have to come to College Park and closing with Rutgers at home should help the cause.

Maryland Football Schedule What To Know: The Terps are easing their way into the season

In general, a Power Five program should face at least one other Power Five team in non-conference play. Maryland, though, has built its slate to get to 3-0 with a nice base of wins – Buffalo, at Charlotte, South Alabama – before kicking off the Big Ten season at Michigan.

Maryland Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a good schedule overall with enough built in winnable games to get to at least six wins and a bowl.

Take care of home against Rutgers and Northwestern, win the three non-conference games, and pull off a victory somewhere else against a Purdue or even a Michigan State at home – or Indiana on the road – and it’ll be a good year.

With a late run of three road games in four dates, though, before dealing with Ohio State, winning early is a must.

Maryland Terrapins College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The Terp offense was freaking weird. It had moments when it couldn’t be stopped – like in the comeback win over Minnesota – and at other times it did absolutely nothing. it couldn’t run the ball a lick against Indiana, it couldn’t seem to score against Rutgers even though the O rolled, and it totally face-planted against Northwestern.

There’s experience. There’s talent. There’s a coaching staff in place with high-end assistant resumés that should know how to make this rock. Oh yes, the 2021 Terps will be a whole lot of fun, but consistent? That’s another issue …

The Terps have their quarterback. There might have been some fight for the gig if VMI transfer Reece Udinski didn’t suffer a torn ACL late in the 2021 FCS spring season, but even if he was healthy this would be Taulia Tagovailoa’s job. He threw too many picks and – like the rest of the O – he wasn’t consistent, but he’s still growing into the job.

He’s got the receivers to throw to. If this isn’t Maryland’s biggest strength, it’s No. 1A with just about everyone who matters returning. Everyone can hit the home run – the top four guys averages close to 15 yards per catch – and it’s a large group. It starts with 6-3 Dontay Demus – who led the team with 24 grabs – as the main man, but he’s not alone with more shooting guard types around the rest of the veteran receiving corps.

The running game didn’t work well enough, and now leading rusher Jake Funk is out of the mix. He ran for 516 of the team’s 725 yards and three of the five scores – Tagovailoa got the other two.

Meny Boone is a 6-1, 245-pounder and senior Tayon Fleet-Davis is 220 pounds. There might not be a ton of flash with this group, but it’ll be fine if the O line does its job.

The front five lost guard Marcus Minor to Pitt and center Johnny Jordan to Virginia Tech, but three starters return around Jaelyn Duncan, a 6-6, 315-pound left tackle who should be a lock for the All-Big Ten team. Pass protection is Job One after finishing last in the conference in sacks allowed per game.

Friday night, the Minnesota Golden Gophers lost in overtime to the Maryland Terrapins 45-44 because of a missed extra point.

The matchup was a shootout after Maryland initially got up to a 21-7 lead on the Gophers, and was lead by a 394 yard and three touchdown passing day from Terrapins’ quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa. The Maryland quarterback also racked up 59 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Golden Gophers’ running back Mohamed Ibrahim led the team with 207 rushing yards and an impressive four rushing touchdowns. Tanner Morgan continues to look like he has taken a step back from last season, and the quarterback’s numbers show this with only 189 passing yards and a touchdown in the offensive showdown.

Seth Green ran in the touchdown to bring the Golden Gophers one point behind the Terrapins in overtime, but Minnesota kicker Brock Walker swung the extra point wide right to end the game in favor of Maryland.

Minnesota sitting at 0-2 to start the season is always good to see for Wisconsin fans and will make the Badger’s path to another Big Ten Championship game a little bit easier.

An exciting Friday night matchup will be played tonight as well, as Tanner Morgan and the Minnesota Golden Gophers will look to get their season back on track against the Maryland Terrapins.

Both matchups could have huge implications on the Big Ten Championship game, and who Wisconsin could potentially be playing in it.
