PHOTOS: Wisconsin falls to Minnesota 23-16 in regular-season finale

Photos from Wisconsin football’s 23-16 loss to Minnesota in the regular-season finale:

The Wisconsin Badgers were unable to take back Paul Bunyan’s Axe in a disappointing 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Camp Randall Stadium. The Badgers played without several key starters including running back Braelon Allen, and outside linebacker Nick Herbig that missed the first half.

Wisconsin had another solid defensive performance, that was able to limit the scoring of the Golden Gophers. The Wisconsin defense got after Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, who was sacked three times on the day. They also were able to slow down the Minnesota rushing attack with eight tackles for loss.

The defensive effort was not enough to lead the Badgers to victory, as the offense struggled to move the ball throughout the game. Wisconsin went only 5-16 on third downs, and a costly interception from quarterback Graham Mertz late in the game proved too much for the Badgers to overcome.

How to watch Wisconsin football battle against Minnesota for Paul Bunyan’s Axe:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Badgers will face off against the Golden Gophers for the 132nd time to battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. Back-to-back wins would be a great way for interim head coach Jim Leonhard to end this tumultuous season and potentially put Wisconsin into a better bowl game.

It will be important for Wisconsin’s defense to stop the run against Minnesota and continue to penetrate into the backfield as they have throughout the year. The Badgers will, unfortunately, be missing outside linebacker Nick Herbig for the first half due to his ejection for targeting last week. He will be needed to help stop Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim, who has racked up over 1,500 rushing yards so far this season.

It should be an exciting game to watch as the Badgers will try to take back Paul Bunyan’s Axe after falling 23-13 to the Golden Gophers last year.

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Gophers miss from the Big Ten East Division?

The Golden Gophers don’t have to face Ohio State or Michigan. That’s good, and not having to play Maryland isn’t that bad. They miss Indiana, though, which means it’s on against Penn State and Michigan State.

Not only do that have to deal with those two – along with the home game against Rutgers – but they have to do on the road against both of those.

Combine that with a road trip to Wisconsin from the West, and there aren’t a ton of big breaks in conference play. Iowa and Purdue have to come to Minneapolis, though.

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: It’s Minnesota, so …

It’s not exactly putting its foot on the non-conference schedule gas.

It did have to go to Colorado last year – and dominated – and now it plays host after a nicely spread out start against New Mexico State and Western Illinois to tune up.

Beat Colorado, and that’s a 3-0 start before going to Michigan State. That hot start is a must because …

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a schedule built for at least seven wins, but it’s going to be sneaky-hard to make a huge push for the West with four Big Ten road games in the middle of the season.

Going to Michigan State is hard enough, but after the week off it’s at Illinois, at Penn State, Rutgers, at Nebraska in a four-week run, and there’s still the date against the Badgers to close.

The USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll top 10 for this week is Georgia(1), Alabama(2), Michigan(3), Cincinnati(4), Oklahoma State(5), Notre Dame(6), Ohio State(7), Mississippi(8), Baylor(9) and Oregon(10).

Wisconsin will rely on true freshman running back Braelon Allen against the Golden Gophers, as he will be looking to tie Jonathan Taylor’s program record of eight consecutive 100-yard rushing games. On the defensive side of the ball, Wisconsin will look to their fantastic front seven to stop the Gophers offense led by quarterback Tanner Morgan.

It will be another great battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe to watch, as the Badgers will try to close out their regular season on a high note against head coach P.J. Fleck and the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota Golden Gophers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– Minnesota has become an interesting mix of offensive styles and talents under PJ Fleck and offensive coordinators Mike Sanford and Matt Simon. The running game is there to be great, the receivers have been fantastic, and the efficiency is usually fine with a strong, balanced attack. If the 2021 version isn’t going to be as strong as the 2019 O, it at least has to be more consistent than 2020.

Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields. Those were the three quarterbacks more efficient than Tanner Morgan in 2019. Not Trevor Lawrence. Not Justin Herbert. Not Kyle Trask. Morgan got dogged for not being at that level in 2020, but he was still decent in the strange seven-game season. Now he has to get his completion level back up over 60% and hit more deep throws along the way.

The receiving corps is still fantastic even with Rashod Bateman off to the Baltimore Ravens. Chris Autman-Bell isn’t exactly the next in the line of great NFL prospects under Fleck, but he’s a fantastic deep threat averaging close to 20 yards per grab last year.

Daniel Jackson is a rising playmaker, and Dylan Wright is an interesting 6-3, 215-pound option coming in from Texas A&M.

This should be the best offensive line by far of the five-year Fleck era. It’s big, it’s experienced, and it just got a whole lot bigger and more experienced with the return of 6-9, 400-pound Daniel Faalele to right tackle after he opted out last season.

The other four starters should in some form around right guard Conner Olson and with Blaise Andries playing where needed now that Faalele is back. Both earned All-Big Ten honors, and Sam Schlueter is a good one at left tackle. This group is going to bash for the fabulous backs returning.

Mohamed Ibrahim is one of the nation’s toughest backs, handling the ball over 200 yards in seven games, and now he’s back along with Cam Riley and Treyson Potts, two 200-pound backs who each averaged over six yards per carry.

In the second quarter of Wisconsin’s game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, running back Garrett Groshek answered the first-quarter touchdown by the Golden Gophers with an explosive 39-yard touchdown run up the middle.

Although the carry from Groshek was up the middle, he was able to speed through a wide-open gap created by the Wisconsin offensive line. The run game was a big question mark going into this game with Wisconsin missing both left tackle Cole Van Lanen and starting running back Jalen Berger, but Groshek has stepped up so far in their absence. He currently has 74 yards and a touchdown early in the second quarter.

The Wisconsin defense has held up pretty well despite the first-quarter touchdown from Tanner Morgan to Cam Wiley that initially put Minnesota up by seven. The Badgers are tied with the Golden Gophers 7-7 with 8:31 left in the first half.

Stay tuned to Badgers Wire for continued updates.

What Minnesota HC P.J. Fleck is saying about Wisconsin before the game

During his game-week press conference, Minnesota football head coach P.J. Fleck talked about the Wisconsin football program and the team…

Early Signing Period in college football is nearing its end and the Wisconsin Badgers have signed all 21 commits in their impressive class of 2021.

During a normal year when the Badgers miss the conference championship this is an off week and bowl preparation begins

That is not the case this year, though, as tomorrow at 3 p.m. CST Paul Chryst and his team will take the field against rival Minnesota and close out their regular season.

The battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe was originally canceled a few weeks ago due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Gopher football program. Thanks to this “champions week” being added to the conference’s 2020 schedule, the Big Ten was able to get the game scheduled and renew one of the greatest rivalries in the country.

Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck talked about the scheduling of the Axe game during his mid-week press conference, saying that everybody involved is excited about getting the chance to play the game.

“It just made sense,” Fleck said. “There’s so much history and tradition between these two teams. And I’m just glad and thankful the Big Ten thought the same way and found a way to keep that tradition and that rivalry going.”

Related: The boat has sunk for Minnesota this year

The Gopher head coach continued to discuss the Badger team he will face on Saturday, first raving about their run defense and strength up front on defense.

“It’s going to be incredibly critical we take advantage of every play that we run or pass,” Fleck said. “The execution of those plays is going to be absolutely critical because [Wisconsin is] phenomenal up front. Probably the best defensive line and front seven we’ve played all year…They’re really good on the back end. One rushing touchdown, that just says it all…That’s what this whole week has been about, finding creative ways to be balanced, especially with the position we’re in getting some players back.”

The ground game will go a long way towards deciding who wins the contest, as the Badgers come in having allowed only one rushing touchdown while the Gophers boast nearly 200 yards-per-game on the ground and 19 rushing touchdowns.

Another factor that will decide who carries Paul Bunyan’s Axe when the clock hits zero is the Wisconsin offense and whether they can find success putting points on the board for the first time since they played Michigan.

Fleck discussed the Badger offense, saying the unit isn’t unlike what his team has seen in recent years.

“Well, the challenge is you’re playing Wisconsin. And Wisconsin is Wisconsin. When you watch their film on offense there’s not a lot that’s changed. They’re going to do what their personnel can do. And most of their personnel, what you know they can do, they do,” Fleck said. “They are still very physical, they’re going to run the football, they’re going to establish the run game, play-action pass, move the pocket, use quick game and they’re very good up front. And their tight end position who is a huge part of what they do, he’s very talented. 84 is one of the better ones in the league. We have our work cut out for us. We have to play our best game of the year.”

This contest could make-or-break the season for both teams, with the Badgers sitting at 2-3 after three straight losses and the Gophers sitting not much better at 3-3. In a season that has been challenging for everybody involved, a win against your most longstanding rival will do a lot for the departing sentiment and give a bit of momentum heading into Bowl Season and the year to come.
