Vanderbilt at Colorado State odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Vanderbilt at Colorado State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Vanderbilt Commodores (0-1) and Colorado State Rams (0-1) meet Saturday at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colo. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Vanderbilt at Colorado State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Commodores got off to a horrendous start to kick off the Clark Lea era, getting drummed 23-3 at home against East Tennessee State of the FCS. While the Buccaneers are no slouch, they’re still an FCS team beating an SEC opponent. It’s not a good look for Vandy.

The ‘Dores, whose saying is “Anchor Down”, looked like they were dragging an anchor on offense. They managed just 85 rushing yards, and 321 total yards overall.

The good news for Vandy, Colorado State wasn’t much better. The Rams had their doors blown off by South Dakota State, another lower-division school, although they’re ranked No. 2 in the FCS. Colorado State did not lead at any point in a rough start to its season.

Vanderbilt at Colorado State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Colorado State 29, Vanderbilt 16

Money line

A play on Colorado State (-280) will cost you nearly three times your potential return, and that’s risky business on a team that was dusted by an FCS foe, albeit a good one, last weekend.

AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

COLORADO STATE -6.5 (-120) should be able to ease past Vanderbilt +6.5 (+100) to get on track after last weekend’s debacle. The difference between these two teams last week is that the Rams looked to at least have a functional offense at times. The Commodores are a train wreck, make that a ship wreck, on offense.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

UNDER 50.5 (-112) is the play, mainly because of the ineptitude of Vanderbilt’s offense last week. They aren’t likely to find much of a safe harbor in Fort Collins if they couldn’t even manage more than a field goal on their own field against an FCS foe. The Rams might give up a little bit, but it won’t be much.

Toledo at Notre Dame odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Toledo Rockets at Notre Dame Fighting Irish odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Toledo Rockets (1-0) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0) meet Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Toledo at Notre Dame odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Toledo had no issues in its 49-10 rout of FCS Norfolk State last weekend at the Glass Bowl. The Rockets had a very balanced attack, posting 205 rushing yards and 236 yards through the air, and they were a plus-2 in turnover margin. Perhaps the only complaint is three sacks allowed.

No. 7 Notre Dame held an 18-point lead at Florida State going to the fourth quarter, but then it ran into nearly a storybook finish for FSU QB McKenzie Milton. He rallied the Seminoles and forced overtime, but the Irish slapped the storybook closed, winning in overtime with perfect “execution” on a game-winning field goal.

Toledo at Notre Dame odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Notre Dame 41, Toledo 20

Money line

Notre Dame (-800) is going to come home and push past MAC foe Toledo without much problem. But you can’t lay eight times your potential return, as that’s a terrible long-term betting strategy. Eventually, one of those will come back to bite you, washing away several wins at a time.

AVOID.

Against the spread

Play NOTRE DAME -16.5 (-115) at home as it will bounce back for the cover here. It’s surprising these two institutions, separated by less than 200 miles, have never meant on the gridiron. After this one, the Rockets are going to wonder why they didn’t continue to avoid the Irish.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

OVER 55.5 (-112) is the lean, but play it lightly. The Irish did good things against the Seminoles. QB Jack Coan looked pretty comfortable in the offense in his first game since the graduate transfer came over from Wisconsin.

Toledo also has an experienced signal caller in QB Bryant Koback. He’ll keep the Rockets afloat for a while.

Ball State at Penn State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Ball State Cardinals at Penn State Nittany Lions odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Ball State Cardinals (1-0) and Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) meet Saturday at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Ball State at Penn State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Ball State eased past FCS Western Illinois by a 31-21 count last week in Muncie, Ind., but was toasted for 367 passing yards. That’s a huge concern hitting the road for Happy Valley.

No. 13 Penn State jumped up seven spots in the AFCA Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, after visiting the Wisconsin Badgers and picking up a 16-10 win. The Nittany Lions and Badgers played a scoreless first half before someone finally hit the scoreboard. The Lions were good for 247 passing yards, and QB Sean Clifford looks to take advantage of a very giving Cardinals secondary.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Ball State +22.5 (-108) | Penn State -22.5 (-112)

Ball State at Penn State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 45, Ball State 17

Money line

Penn State (-2000) will cost you 20 times your potential return, or $5 profit for every $100 risked. You can’t do that.

AVOID.

Against the spread

Roll with PENN STATE -22.5 (-112) against undermanned Ball State. The Cardinals couldn’t contain the passing attack of Western Illinois of the FCS on their home field last weekend. They certainly are going to struggle in Happy Valley against the Nittany Lions in front of 100,000-plus fans.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

OVER 57.5 (-117) is the play as the Nittany Lions will certainly get theirs. The concern here is whether Ball State will be able to get on the ball and get its offense going. It might take a late, garbage-time touchdown to push this one Over the finish line, so don’t get too crazy with the total in this one.

Buffalo at Nebraska odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Buffalo Bulls at Nebraska Cornhuskers odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Bulls (1-0) and Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-1) meet Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Buffalo at Nebraska odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Buffalo trounced FCS Wagner 69-7 count last weekend, rolling up 312 rushing yards and passing for 257 yards while allowing a total of just 97 yards. The Bulls also recorded five sacks in the home victory, covering a 43.5-point number.

Nebraska bounced back after a 30-22 loss at Illinois in Week 0, pounding FCS Fordham by a 52-7 count. The Huskers racked up 329 rushing yards and 304 passing yards in the rout. It wasn’t all great as Nebraska lost two fumbles, but it did post three takeaways via interception.

Buffalo at Nebraska odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Nebraska 31, Buffalo 24

Money line

Nebraska (-540) will cost you more than five times your potential return, and it’s not even a guarantee that it wins this game straight up.

AVOID.

Against the spread

BUFFALO +13.5 (-112) is the play against host Nebraska. The Bulls are 4-0 ATS across the past four non-conference games, while covering 13 of the past 16 games overall.

On the flip side, the Cornhuskers are just 2-6 ATS in the past eight outside of the Big Ten, while going 8-20-2 ATS in the previous 30 games at home. They’re also just 3-7 ATS in the previous 10 when favored.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

OVER 54.5 (-112) is the lean, ever so slightly. Go very light as it will require a late score to push the Over across the finish line.

The Over is 8-1 in the past nine games in the month of September for Buffalo, while going 10-4 in the past 14 games overall. The Over is also 5-2 in the past seven at home for Nebraska.

Louisville vs. Mississippi odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Louisville vs. Mississippi odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Louisville Cardinals and Mississippi Rebels meet Monday in a neutral-site game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Louisville vs. Mississippi odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Cardinals are looking for a bounce back after a 4-7 regular season, which included an 0-5 showing on the road. Can Louisville carry the flag for the ACC after a brutal Week 1? (Miami was smoked by Alabama, Clemson dropped the week’s marquee game to Georgia, Florida State lost to Notre Dame, Duke fell to Charlotte and Georgia Tech was upset by Northern Illinois as a 19-point home favorite).

The big news for the Rebels is that they’ll be without head coach Lane Kiffin, who tested positive for COVID-19 and is away from the team. The Rebels have yet to name a fill-in coach for the game, although it’s likely offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jeff Lebby, or co-defensive coordinators D.J. Durkin or Chris Partridge could fill the void.

Louisville vs. Mississippi odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Louisville +290 (bet $100 to win $290) | Mississippi -380 (bet $380 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Louisville +9.5 (-112) | Mississippi -9.5 (-108)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 75.5 (O: -112 | U: -108)

Louisville vs. Mississippi odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Mississippi 41, Louisville 27

Money line

Mississippi (-380) will cost you 3.8 times your potential return. That’s risky business for such a small profit. It’s an especially poor bet since it could be out of sorts early with their coach back not on hand.

AVOID.

Against the spread

MISSISSIPPI -9.5 (-112) could get off to a sluggish start in this one. The Rebels make their way to Atlanta without their coach, and it might take some to get untracked. However, they have a powerful offense led by QB Matt Corral.

The Rebs racked up 384.3 total yards of offense per game last season, leading the nation. However, they need to take better care of the ball. Ole Miss turned it over 18 times last season, and that simply won’t do if it wants to be a top team in the ultra-competitive SEC West.

We’ll learn a lot about both teams in this one. The Rebels are ready for prime time, including standalone, marquee matchups. The Cardinals are simply mediocre, and will struggle just to attain bowl eligibility.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 75.5 (-108).

Under plays in college football are always dangerous, but this is a super high line. Yes, both Ole Miss and Louisville have powerful offenses, and very giving defenses. However, the Cardinals are replacing two top-notch receivers in Tutu Atwell and Dez Fitzpatrick, as well as RB Javian Hawkins. Ole Miss is trying to fill the shoes of WR Elijah Moore.

Toss in the fact Kiffin is away from the Rebs, and they could start off a little slow. Is it going to be a defensive slog? Definitely not. But a slow start will mean an uphill climb all evening for Over bettors, and they’ll come up just short.

Notre Dame at Florida State odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Notre Dame at Florida State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Florida State Seminoles meet Sunday at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Notre Dame vs. Florida State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Notre Dame heads into the season at No. 7 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Irish faced the Seminoles in October 2020, and Notre Dame came away with a 42-26 victory but failed to cover a 21-point spread.

The Irish will have a much different look, however, as QB Ian Book has graduated. Wisconsin transfer QB Jack Coan takes the reins of the offense, and he is more of a short-to-intermediate route thrower, rather than a big downfield threat.

Look for Notre Dame to run the ball with its tremendous one-two backfield punch, of RBs Chris Tyree and Kyren Williams. When they’re in the red zone, look for TE Michael Mayer to be targeted frequently.

Florida State also has a new signal-caller. Or does it? Head coach Mike Norvell isn’t expected to name a starter until game time, either redshirt sophomore Jordan Travis, or incoming transfer QB McKenzie Milton, formerly of UCF.

Notre Dame at Florida State odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:45 a.m. ET.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Notre Dame -7.5 (-102) | Florida State +7.5 (-122)

Notre Dame at Florida State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Notre Dame 30, Florida State 19

Money line

Notre Dame (-280) will cost you more than two and a half times your potential return, and that’s just too risky with a new quarterback in a road opener.

AVOID.

Against the spread

NOTRE DAME -7.5 (-102) is a slam-dunk play.

Notre Dame is the ranked and better team. Florida State has some nice pieces coming over through the transfer portal, but it’s going to take time for this team to jell.

Over/Under

UNDER 55.5 (-112) is a great play as well and I love a Notre Dame/Under parlay. We will see a transfer quarterback for the Irish, and we’re expecting to see a transfer quarterback see meaningful snaps for the home side, too. There is a lot of change going on.

In addition, Notre Dame is expected to lean heavily upon its two returning tailbacks. Running teams keep the clock running and that’s great news for Under bettors.

Portland State at Hawaii odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Portland State at Hawaii odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Portland State Vikings and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors meet Saturday at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:59 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Portland State vs. Hawaii odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Portland State played just one game in the spring and was drummed 48-7 at Montana. At least the Vikings will be used to the quiet of a smattering of fans, as they have played in front of just 4,569 total fans since the end of the 2019 season. The Ching Athletics Complex has a capacity of only 9,000.

Hawaii (0-1) plays games at its practice facility due to issues with Aloha Stadium, and the Warriors are expected to be displaced through at least the 2022 season. The fans haven’t been what has marooned teams visiting the islands, it’s the travel. That isn’t changing, so expect Hawaii to still enjoy a home-field advantage of sorts.

The Rainbow Warriors were hammered 44-10 on the road against UCLA in its opener on the mainland. Look for QB Chevan Cordeiro and the home side to be much different here.

Portland State at Hawaii odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:10 p.m. ET.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Portland State +25.5 (-112) | Hawaii -25.5 (-108)

Portland State at Hawaii odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Hawaii 45, Portland State 17

Money line

The way Hawaii (-2500) looked last week, you can’t risk 25 times your potential return. You can’t really do that, anyway. Over the long haul, it’s a losing betting strategy.

AVOID.

Against the spread

HAWAII -25.5 (-108) is back in the islands, and it gets an FCS opponent in Portland State to take out frustrations from Week 0.

The Rainbow Warriors had tremendous difficulty against UCLA last week but expect plenty of wide-open spaces and big plays in their home opener. Cordeiro and the Rainbow Warriors will get the passing offense rolling.

Over/Under

OVER 56.5 (-115) is a great play and the Rainbow Warriors have the potential to take care of a huge chunk of the Over on their own. They’ll roll up huge offensive totals against the undermanned Vikings, sending them back to the mainland with an L in a higher-scoring game.

Utah State at Washington State odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Utah State at Washington State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Utah State Aggies and Washington State Cougars meet Saturday at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Utah State vs. Washington State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Aggies tumbled to a 1-5 mark last season. Utah State made a change at the top, and head coach Blake Anderson comes over from Arkansas State to take the reins. QB Logan Bonner and WR Brandon Bowling follow Anderson from Jonesboro to Logan to give USU an immediate injection of talent.

The run-and-shoot is in effect in Pullman. After a strange 2020 campaign with little to no time to implement his system, head coach Nick Rolovich has had a full and more normal offseason to get things in place.

RB Max Borghi is a jack of all trades who should shine in Rolovich’s system, and they return top-notch WRs Renard Bell and Travell Harris. QBs Jayden de Laura and Tennessee transfer Jarrett Guarantano are likely to split work under center, at least early on.

Utah State at Washington State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Washington State 41, Utah State 31

Money line

Risking eight times your potential return on Washington State (-800) is not a recommended play. That’s just too much risk, especially for a team with some question marks under center.

AVOID.

Against the spread

UTAH STATE +17.5 (-107) should be much better this season, especially with a bona fide winner in Bonner under center. While he is new to Logan, he isn’t new to Anderson’s system. He’ll shine, regardless of the logo on the side of his helmet, due to the familiarity.

I don’t expect the Aggies to win this one outright, but I do think they’ll give Wazzu a scare. Rolovich and the Cougs are still trying to find their way after transitioning from Mike Leach and the “Air Raid” offense in 2019.

Over/Under

OVER 66.5 (-107) is the play here. Washington State has a multi-faceted back in Borghi who can do big things and several receivers who can house it every time they touch the ball. The Cougars will pass, pass and then pass more. Over bettors love teams addicted to the pass.

Utah State averaged just 15.5 points per game in 2020, but it will be much, much better with Bonner and Anderson at the helm. The Aggies are going to be much more exciting, and it will show immediately in this potential shootout.

New Mexico State at San Diego State odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s New Mexico State at San Diego State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Mexico State Aggies and San Diego State Aztecs meet Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the New Mexico State vs. San Diego State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Aggies (0-1) were worked over by UTEP last weekend in Las Cruces, falling 30-3. NMSU managed just 101 rushing yards, and 89 passing yards, while getting sacked three times and fumbling it away once. On a positive note, they were plus-1 in the turnover department.

The Aztecs, who are more like nomads, are playing games 111 miles north in the greater Los Angeles area while their new Mission Valley stadium is being constructed. Whether this game is in SoCal, or on the moon, they should be able to easily push past the Aggies.

New Mexico State at San Diego State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

San Diego State 41, New Mexico State 6

Money line

No way, no how can you bet San Diego State (-10000), risking $100 for every $1 won. That’s especially so playing in a sterile environment nearly two hours north of its usual home, so fans are likely to be very sparse.

AVOID.

Against the spread

SAN DIEGO STATE -31.5 (-105) is worth a small-unit play. The Aztecs should pounce on a New Mexico State team that was drummed by subpar UTEP. Look for RBs Chance Bell, Greg Bell, Jordan Byrd and Kaegun Williams all to see meaningful touches in the SDSU backfield. TE Daniel Bellinger is also a top red-zone target, and you can expect him to get his.

In addition, San Diego State has a monster defensive front, and the Aztecs limited the opposition to just 17.8 points per game in 2020, tops in the Mountain West. That’s not what the Aggies want to see after being held to just a field goal last weekend.

Over/Under

UNDER 50.5 (-108) is the lean here. New Mexico State looked atrocious last week, giving us a sneak peek at what to expect this weekend. The Aggies will be facing a superior defense than the one they saw in El Paso last weekend.

While San Diego State has a bevy of backs to carry the mail, its pass attack is just mediocre. The Aztecs were good for just 24.6 PPG and 5.1 yards per play last season, so they need improvements before Over bets are considered in their games.

BYU vs. Arizona odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s BYU vs. Arizona odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The BYU Cougars and Arizona Wildcats head to Las Vegas, Nev., to open their seasons Saturday in the Vegas Kickoff Classic at 10:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the BYU vs. Arizona odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Arizona’s opener is the head coaching debut for Jedd Fisch, who served as the New England Patriots’ QB coach in 2020. Fisch has a full rebuild on his hands in Tucson, as Arizona’s 0-5 season ended with an embarrassing 70-7 loss to rival Arizona State in the Territorial Cup last year.

BYU went 11-1 behind a prolific offense that led the nation with 7.9 yards per play. The problem is that most of that production is gone, as QB Zach Wilson was the second overall pick in the NFL draft and the offensive line lost its top three starters. It must also replace three starting defensive linemen, including star DT Khyiris Tonga and leading tackler LB Isaiah Kaufusi.

BYU vs. Arizona odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 31, Arizona 17

Money line

Arizona enters this contest on a 12-game losing skid and the talent cupboard is bare for its new regime. BYU is the heavy favorite, but there’s not enough payout at -500 to bet on them straight up.

PASS and target the spread instead.

Against the spread

Not only has Arizona lost 12 straight, but they’ve failed to cover in 10 of those games. Despite some promising offseason moves by Fisch – most notably hiring defensive coordinator Don Brown from Michigan – this won’t be an overnight fix.

BYU will have plenty of fresh faces as well, but most of its skill position players return and the continuity on its coaching staff should minimize that early-season learning curve. Take BYU -12.5 (-110).

Over/Under

With a bunch of turnover for both teams, and in Arizona’s case an entirely new offensive scheme, expect the defenses to be farther along than each offense this early in the season. Bet the UNDER 53.5 (-107) as both teams work out the Week One kinks.
