In such a tough basketball conference as the Big Ten, it’s only a matter of time before teams go through a rough patch. That’s currently the case for Michigan and Iowa, who meet on Friday. It will mark an important game for both schools, who hope a win can get them through the grind of the conference schedule. These teams met on Dec. 6 in a high scoring affair that saw Michigan beat Iowa 103-91.

No. 19 Michigan (11-5, 2-3) would rather forget Sunday’s 75-67 loss to Minnesota on the road in which the team was outscored by nine points in the second half. Zavier Simpson led the Wolverines in scoring with 19 points, but Michigan couldn’t stop the hot shooting of Minnesota, which was close to 55 percent. Michigan ranks first in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.478), second in three-point accuracy (.363) and third in scoring offense (77.9). The team will continue to be without Isaiah Livers, who has been dealing with a groin injury since Dec. 21.

After starting off Big Ten play with a 1-3 record, the Hawkeyes have won two straight games, including their first road win, knocking off Northwestern 75-62 on Tuesday night. Now, Iowa (12-5, 3-3) can take a deep breath with three straight home games. Iowa held Northwestern to 36 percent shooting and 29 percent shooting from three-point range. Center Luke Garza was a beast, scoring a team-high 27 points. Garza was unbelievable in the first contest, scoring 44 points in the game. The same defensive intensity the team showed against Northwestern needs to happen again vs. Michigan if the Hawkeyes want a win.

No. 15 Michigan State needs to forget its road game last Sunday against Purdue. The team got killed 71-42 by the Boilermakers, marking MSU’s first conference loss of the season. Michigan State (13-4, 5-1) suffered its worst loss ever as a top-10 team. The Spartans had never lost as a top-10 team by more than 22 points. Purdue relied on its tough defense to keep MSU in check, especially Cassius Winston, who finished with 10 points, but also had nine turnovers. It marked the Spartans first loss since Dec. 3.

As for Wisconsin (11-6, 4-2), the team is coming off a nail-biting 56-54 win over No. 17 Maryland. In the closing seconds, Brad Davison drilled a three-pointer from the corner that proved to be the game-winner. It marked the Badgers’ third consecutive win over a ranked opponent, the other two coming against Penn State and Illinois. The last time Wisconsin won three consecutive games against ranked opponents was during the 2015-16 season. Wisconsin held an opponent under 60 points for the seventh time this season. Junior Nate Reuvers scored in double digits for the 13th time in 17 games, finishing with a team-high 17 points and five rebounds.

Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Wisconsin Badgers (11-6, 4-2 Big Ten) visit the Breslin Center to play the conference rival Michigan State Spartans (13-4, 5-1) at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Wisconsin-Michigan State odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Wisconsin at Michigan State: Three things you need to know

  1. Wisconsin is 3-1 versus ranked opponents this season with victories over Big Ten rivals Ohio State, Penn State and Maryland.
  2. In its last game, Michigan State suffered a 29-point loss to Purdue, 71-42, which is tied for its biggest loss since 2010 (they lost by 29 to Michigan in 2017).
  3. Since 2010-11, the Spartans have won six straight home games against the Badgers with the last five victories coming by double-digits.

Prediction

Michigan State 67, Wisconsin 61

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID a moneyline wager on either side due to Michigan State’s 33-10 record since 2014 when coming off a loss and its gross Michigan State -500 price point. I do expect the Spartans to bounce back from their 29-point trouncing at the hands of Purdue, so Wisconsin +375 is a no-go for me as well. But no way I’m laying $500 to earn a profit of a measly $100 if the Spartans win.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Wisconsin has played well against tough competition so far this season; the Badgers are 6-3-1 against the spread in games against above .500 teams. Second, they have the third-best ATS record (25-22-2) in the Big Ten against ranked opponents since 2014. Third, the Badgers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog. Finally, Michigan State -9.5 (-110) is a mountain of a spread considering the Spartans are just 3-5 ATS when laying 9.5 or more points this season.

TAKE WISCONSIN +9.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The last four Badgers-Spartans contests have gone Under, as have each of the teams’ previous two games. Each have solid defenses—the Spartans are ranked 67th in the county in opponent’s points per game compared to the Badgers’ 14th ranking in such metric. Furthermore, the combined over/under record for Wisconsin-Michigan State is 3-5 against ranked opponents. I expect this Friday night conference rivalry game to play UNDER 131 (-106).

Michigan at Iowa college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Michigan Wolverines at Iowa Hawkeyes sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and bets

The Michigan Wolverines (11-5) visit the Iowa Hawkeyes (12-5) Friday in a Big Ten showdown at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET. We analyze the Michigan-Iowa odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Michigan at Iowa: Three things you need to know

1. Michigan has lost two of its last three games overall. Both of those losses were on the road, and the Wolverines head to Iowa City with a four-game road losing streak in tow. UM has struggled in shooting the basketball over those four losses, going a combined 93-of-251 (37.1%) from the field.

2. Iowa bounced back from twin losses in early January to pick up solid straight-up and against-the-spread conquests of Maryland (Jan. 10) and Northwestern (Tuesday). The Hawkeyes field-goal defense in the back-to-back wins has been a major improvement. In four of Iowa’s five losses, opponent field-goal and 3-point accuracy rates have been so high as to peg the Hawkeyes as being somewhat unlucky in bumping up against a couple too many incredible shooting nights.

3. Over the past 10-12 games for each side, Iowa has displayed more consistency in taking and maintaining leads. Across the early-line providers, there wasn’t an avalanche of movement after the open at Iowa -4 or -4.5. But whatever flurries there were all went the way of the Hawkeyes playing on their home court.

Michigan at Iowa: Odds, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Iowa 75, Michigan 68

Moneyline (ML)

There was no moneyline posted at the time of publication.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Hawkeyes are 6-1-1 ATS over their last eight games. The Wolverines are 3-4 ATS over their last seven, and they are winless ATS in four road games. Iowa is 6-2 ATS at home. Michigan is coming off a four-day rest and the last three times UM had four-plus days off and played a road game they are 0-3 with an average ATS margin near double digits. The home team is 4-1 ATS over the last five games in this series.

One of those incredible shooting nights against Iowa was Dec. 6 against the Wolverines. UM logged a 63.8% effective field-goal mark (which levels 2- and 3-point attempts). Michigan got to the line 34 times that game. There is some value in the IOWA (-4.5, -115) line.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under is 7-0 the last seven times Iowa was favored. The Wolverines and Hawkeyes cranked out 194 total points last time around. They averaged 130 points over two meetings last season.

The UNDER 148 (-110) is a strong play.

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball: Trying Season Continues at Duke

Haley Gorecki went on an 8-0 run by herself to draw Duke within one at 42-41 before Notre Dame’s final field goal of the night came with Sam Brunelle hitting her career-high fourth three and the Irish a 45-41 lead with 6:34 to go.

On a night that the Notre Dame Women’s basketball team played their best defensive quarter and half of the season, they fell in perhaps their most-frustrating loss of the season, a 50-47 decision at Duke on Thursday night as three turnovers in the final minute did the Irish in.

“I thought we lost that game entirely on our own – the turnovers were just so costly down the stretch. We couldn’t even get shots” Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said after the game.

The Irish got off to a very fast start, going on a 14-2 run in the first quarter and not allowing a point the final 6:37 of the first frame, taking a 14-4 lead to the second quarter.

Duke’s offense came alive to the tune of 16 second quarter points but Notre Dame’s Mikki Vaughn led the Irish with eight points in the quarter herself to help aid Notre Dame to 15 themselves in the second quarter which led to a 29-20 halftime lead.

A 9-0 Duke run in the third quarter cut the Irish lead to three at 34-31, but Notre Dame responded with a run of their own to stretch the lead back to 40-33 entering the fourth.

Destinee Walker kicked off the fourth with a layup that pushed the Irish lead to nine but unfortunately that accounted for half of her made field goals on the night and Notre Dame would score just five more points on the night.

Haley Gorecki went on an 8-0 run by herself to draw Duke within one at 42-41 before Notre Dame’s final field goal of the night came with Sam Brunelle hitting her career-high fourth three and the Irish a 45-41 lead with 6:34 to go.

The Irish however would be turnover-happy down the stretch and only score again by sinking a couple of free throws as Duke rallied to win 50-47 on their home court.

The loss drops Notre Dame to just 6-12 overall and 1-5 in ACC play while Duke improved to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.

Notre Dame looks for their second conference win of the season again Sunday when they return home to take on Miami in a game that can be seen on ACC Network.

Rich Paul, Klutch Sports and other major agencies not included on certified NCAA list

Other major agencies are not represented, such as Wasserman and CAA, but it does raise questions about what it all means.

Rich Paul did not appear on a new list of agents certified by the NCAA. Nor did nor any representatives from Klutch Sports.

Paul, however, was far from alone as many big names were absent. Several other well-known agencies that did not appear on the certified NCAA list included Roc Nation, Priority Sports, CAA, Wasserman, BDA Sports and many other major players in the industry.

“Most agents feel it is a complete farce,” one NBPA agent, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports Media Group on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, told LeBron Wire. “Why would we register with them if we’ve been with the NBPA for so many years? It’s a complete insult.”

“Most underclassmen that big agencies are targeting will be all in and will not care about going back to the NCAA. Those kids don’t straddle the fence. You don’t have to be certified by the NCAA to talk with them.”

LeBron Wire also spoke to two agents who did get the certification, though both were bothered by the legislation and process — which included a full background check as well as a check to the NCAA for insurance and another for the certification.

“I’d rather be compliant than not,” explained one agent, who passed the test and also spoke to USAT SMG on the condition of anonymity. “I thought that it could give me an edge on some of the guys that decide to test the waters that I wouldn’t be able to get otherwise. I thought maybe it’d give me some connection to coaches that I wouldn’t have otherwise. For at least a year, I’d like to see how it worked and how the NCAA enforced it.”

The representative from that firm told LeBron Wire that they did not plan on renewing their certification if they did not feel that others complied with the rule moving forward.

“Ideally, as a unit, the agents could fight this because we don’t want these additional certifications,” a third agent told LeBron Wire. “But if we can’t fight it, we wanted someone to get it so we’d protected. We don’t want this to be necessary. A lot of other agencies didn’t do it in protest.”

LeBron James, Rich Paul, and Klutch Sports have made it clear that they do not like the way the NCAA handles their business and profits off of unpaid athletes.

Although LeBron himself supports Ohio State, he’s never been a fan of the structure of college sports, or amateurism in general, especially after seeing season tickets and cable subscriptions being sold to his high school games.

Over the past few years, as James and Paul have become firmly entrenched in the NBA’s power structure, they launched what could be seen by the NCAA as an attack on their power.

First, LeBron’s production company SpringHill Entertainment produced a scathing documentary called “Student-Athlete” that followed several athletes that had been wronged by oddly-enforced eligibility rules or a lack of injury compensation. James also led the charge in California for their state assembly to vote in a law that would allow amateur athletes to profit off of their name and likeness.

Then during the last college basketball season, Klutch Sports player Darius Bazley opted to de-commit from Syracuse and opt to train for the 2019 NBA Draft while also having an internship with New Balance that could pay him up to $14 million.

All of this led up to new agent certification rules proposed by the NCAA.

The first draft included a requirement for a college degree that several called “The Rich Paul Rule” — though it was shortly amended to just require a test to be taken at NCAA headquarters. But even that was a non-starter for Paul and several other agencies.

Although the winds of change for amateurism have been swirling for a while, the NCAA is attempting to control a system they’ve has rarely been challenged like it is today. And with Paul not alone in refusing to comply with what several major agencies evidently see as an outdated model, it will be interesting to see what the future of the NCAA agent certification rules become.

Oregon at Washington State college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Oregon Ducks at Washington State Cougars sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips

The Oregon Ducks (14-3, 3-1 Pac-12) and Washington State Cougars (10-7, 1-3 Pac-12) square off at Wallis Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum in Pullman at 9 p.m. ET Thursday. We analyze the Oregon-Washington State odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

The Ducks are ranked eighth in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Oregon at Washington State: Three things you need to know

1. Oregon heads into this one ranked 40th in the nation with 78.2 points per game (PPG), while ranking 12th overall in field-goal percentage (48.4). They’re also 10th in the country in 3-point shooting percentage (39.4).

2. Ducks G Payton Pritchard continues to tear it up, rolling up 19.2 PPG, 5.9 assists per game (APG) and 1.8 steals per contest to lead the team. For the Cougars, F CJ Elleby is their stud with 18.4 PPG, 6.7 rebounds per game (RPG) and 1.8 steals per game (SPG).

3. Washington State is horrible on offense, ranking 333rd in the nation in field-goal percentage (39.7) and 316th in 3-point shooting percentage (29.6).

Oregon at Washington State: Odds, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Oregon 86, Washington State 69

Moneyline (ML)

The Ducks (-500) are heavy road favorites, but there’s no sense in placing a bet here as a $10 wager on Oregon to win outright will return a profit of just $2. It’s not worth even the minimal risk. PASS and look to the spread.

Against the Spread (ATS)

OREGON (-9.5, -106) is the play on the road despite the fact they’re laying nearly double digits. The Ducks have covered the spread in 12 of their past 14 games on the road, and they’re 22-6 ATS in the past 28 games overall. The favorite has also hit in five of the past seven in this series, so the arrow points squarely at the Ducks.

On the flip side, Washington State (+9.5, -115) is 1-4 ATS in the past five games overall, and just 3-10 ATS in the past 13 as a dog. The Cougars are also 4-10 ATS in the previous 14 against teams with a winning overall mark.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 139.5 (-110) looks awfully tasty in this one. The Ducks have a high-octane offense capable of throwing up some serious points. The Cougars, they’re the concern here, as they’re pretty pathetic shooting the rock. However, in a potential blowout, they should get some garbage points late against reserves.

The Over is 12-3-1 in Oregon’s last 16 games overall, and 5-1-1 in their past seven on the road. The Over is 5-2 in Wazzu’s past seven overall, too.

Auburn at Alabama college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Auburn Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The undefeated Auburn Tigers (15-0) visit the Alabama Crimson Tide (8-7) Wednesday for a 9 p.m. ET game at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala. We analyze the Aubrn-Alabama odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Auburn at Alabama: Three things you need to know

1. The Crimson Tide are 7-2 over nine games at home; they are 5-1 against the spread in six games at Coleman Coliseum. Alabama ranks seventh in the nation in scoring 83.2 points per game; the Crimson Tide have managed 90-plus on offense in each of their last three home games.

2. Alabama junior G John Petty Jr. leads the Tide in scoring (16.7 PPG) and rebounding (7.3 rebounds per game). He is shooting a robust 49.5% from 3-point range, and he launches over six treys per contest. Petty is a key figure for a UA squad showing a great deal of in-season improvement in overall shooting, 3-point prowess and taking care of the basketball.

3. Auburn has been playing at a slower tempo than Alabama, which has a tempo figure ranked sixth in the nation. The Tigers have also played slightly lesser defenses this far. Across several key analytics, despite losing two of its last three games, Alabama has shown growth during the season and is very much playing its best basketball right now. The Tide are the superior team from distance – look for that to be a key in keeping the Tigers close.

Dating back to last March, the Tigers are 0-4 ATS the last four times they played on three-days of rest. Line-watch this one and look for Alabama to get 2.5 or 3 points of insurance. The current lean is Alabama (+2, +100).

Over/Under (O/U)

Bettors can’t catch up with the Alabama Over this season. The Over is 10-5 in its 15 games. Look for the Crimson Tide to stay close and control the pace throughout. Take the OVER 159.5 (-106).
